Most fragrances sold as oud contain almost none of it. Ten millilitres of Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade, poured here, is $71. Ten millilitres of Ensar Oud EO2 Tonkin, a distilled agarwood oil, is $386. Same shelf, same syringe, five times the price. Neither is a fraud. Only one of them is oud.
We split every bottle here ourselves. The oils are dark, viscous, and stain their glassware; the sprays behave like water. No decanter can tell you whether the trace of natural oud a $614 bottle claims is actually in the formula. Every row below carries one of three labels, and we use the third where we mean it: real oil, oud accord, claimed and unverified.

The accord side, where saffron does the work
Four of these are built from aroma chemicals and expensive florals, with natural oud present in trace at most. That is arithmetic, not an accusation: at several hundred dollars a bottle, there is no room in the formula for a material that sells by the gram.
The best first oud, and it is an accord
Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade is the oud most people meet first, and the material doing the smoke is birch. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, sillage Enormous. Two sprays in an office is an apology you will spend the day making.
The one that survives a working day
Initio Oud for Greatness is built on saffron, not agarwood. Real saffron is priced by the gram, so perfumery reaches for safranal, and safranal over smoke reads as hot leather. Logged at 8 to 10 hours, Strong rather than Enormous, which is the entire point.
The shortcut, named out loud
Maison Crivelli Oud Maracuja prints its trick in the base: akigalawood, fermented patchouli turned peppery and woody. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Enormous. The passionfruit opening is the risk, and it is the wrong bottle for a solemn room.
Rose first, oud second
MFK Oud Satin Mood is really a rose, and it is the rose that people compliment. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Enormous. If you came for smoke, this is upholstery.
The oil side, where the price is the material
These are distilled agarwood oils, applied by wand; one millilitre is weeks of wear. Wild lots do not repeat: when a distillation is finished, that oil is finished.
The gentlest way into real oil
Ensar Oud Blue Kalbar puts two distilled ouds, Sri Lankan and East Indian, under a quiet bouquet. Logged at 8 to 10 hours, Moderate. Nobody notices this across a room.
The material with nothing in front of it
Ensar Oud EO2 Tonkin is the distilled material itself, worn close to skin. If you have never smelled distilled oud, the first fifteen minutes will read as wrong. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Strong.
The arithmetic, and the one thing it cannot settle
