The Story
EO2 is built on Tonkin musk, which runs brighter and cleaner than the Mongolian or Tibetan grades, set against Mysore sandalwood and oud. It has the structure of a modern perfume carrying the weight of a raw animalic material.
Spicy

Sichuan Pepper
Bright citrus spice with a tingling edge
What it is
The dried reddish husk of berries from Zanthoxylum trees, members of the citrus family Rutaceae, not true peppercorns. Aroma materials come from the husk via steam distillation or supercritical CO2 extraction, the latter preserving the delicate citrus-spice balance and leaving no solvent residue.
How it smells
Sparkling and pungent, opening with grapefruit-like citrus zest over warm rosy spice. Linalool and limonene give a bright floral-woody lift, with metallic, faintly vetiver undertones. The whole husk triggers tongue-tingling numbness in food, but the perfumery extract reads mainly as zesty, peppery brightness.

Good to know
The tongue-tingling buzz comes from hydroxy-alpha-sanshool, which excites the skin's light-touch RA1 nerve fibres at roughly fifty hertz, registering as a genuine vibration. Botanically the plant sits in the citrus family, sharing more lineage with lemon trees than with black pepper.
Pink Pepper
Bright rosy berries with a sparkling spice fizz
What it is
Pink pepper is the dried berry of the Peruvian pepper tree Schinus molle, native to the Andes and a member of the cashew family Anacardiaceae, not a true pepper. The rose-colored berries are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted into an oil dominated by alpha-phellandrene, limonene and pinene.
How it smells
Bright, dry and sparkling, more rosy and fruity than black pepper, with only a soft prickle of spice. Crushed-berry, juniper-like resin and faint citrus facets give a fizzy, airy lift. It flashes peppery on top, then fades quickly into a gentle warm spiciness.

Good to know
Despite the name, these berries are botanically unrelated to true pepper, Piper nigrum; the resemblance is purely aromatic. As an Anacardiaceae cousin of cashew and mango, Schinus can trigger reactions in people sensitive to that family, so culinary use of the berries is best in moderation.
Cedar
Dry sharpened pencils and sun-warmed timber
What it is
Cedar in perfumery comes mainly from the Virginia and Texas "cedars" of the Juniperus genus, with true Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) a smaller second source. Juniper chips and sawmill shavings are steam-distilled into an oil rich in cedrol and cedrene, while Atlas oil runs instead on himachalene sesquiterpenes.
How it smells
Dry, woody and resinous, recalling freshly sharpened pencils and cedar-lined closets. Atlas cedar leans warm, smoky and balsamic; Virginia cedar reads sharper and cleaner. It opens crisp and pencil-like, then settles into a soft, sawdust-warm, faintly sweet timber that holds for hours.

Good to know
Most perfumery "cedar" is not botanical cedar at all but juniper; true Cedrus and the unrelated Juniperus share a name through scent, not lineage. Cedarwood oil was burned in ancient Egyptian embalming and used to scent tombs, coffins and ships' timbers.
Coriander
Green seed warmth turning soft and woody
What it is
The dried ripe seeds of Coriandrum sativum, an annual herb in the carrot family grown across Eastern Europe, Russia and India. Crushed seeds are steam-distilled into an essential oil dominated by linalool. The fresh leaf, called cilantro, smells entirely different and is rarely used in perfume.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and softly spicy, with a peppery, woody lift and a faint citrus-floral edge from its high linalool content. It opens fresh and green-aromatic, then dries into a rounded, slightly aldehydic warmth recalling lavender, rosewood and a hint of gingerbread.

Cumin

Genuine tea extracts exist from specialist naturals suppliers, but most tea notes are reconstructions because true extracts are scarce and costly. Theaspirane, identified in tea volatiles in the early 1970s, supplies a fruity blackcurrant lift over a camphoraceous green edge, while tabanone adds a warm tobacco-and-acorn nuance.
Everlasting Flower
Sun-baked hay laced with maple and curry
What it is
Immortelle is Helichrysum italicum, a small silvery Mediterranean shrub nicknamed the curry plant, growing wild on rocky scrubland in Corsica, the Balkans and southern France. Its clustered yellow flower heads, which keep their colour when dried, are steam-distilled for an essential oil or solvent-extracted into an absolute.
How it smells
The note opens warm and herbal, like sun-warmed hay and dried chamomile, with a sharp curry-leaf edge. As it settles, sweeter facets surface: burnt maple syrup, caramel, tobacco, liquorice and tree sap. The drydown turns rounder and honeyed, faintly fenugreek-spiced and slightly medicinal underneath.
In perfumery
Used in the heart and base, immortelle lends a tobacco-tea-liqueur warmth and natural depth, pairing with woods, leather, lavender and amber in fougere and oriental builds. It anchors the reference maple-immortelle scents, and elsewhere is set against lavender for a sweeter, aromatic contrast.
Good to know
The name means everlasting: cut flowers hold their shape and colour for years without water, which earned the plant a place in ancient funeral wreaths. Corsican distillation yields are tiny, so true immortelle absolute ranks among the costlier naturals on a perfumer's bench.
Georgian Rose Otto
The sunlit, honey-clear damask of the Caucasus
What it is
Georgian Rose is the otto (steam/hydro-distilled essential oil) of Rosa damascena grown in the valleys of the Caucasus, in the Republic of Georgia. In an all-natural house where rare botanicals are distilled and blended in-house, it appears as a genuine single-origin rose oil rather than a reconstituted rose accord, often set beside other true ottos so each origin keeps its own voice. Being the otto and not the solvent-extracted absolute, it carries the lighter, more crystalline top of the flower rather than the dark, jammy depth that extraction pulls out.
How it smells
Sunny, bright and glowingly warm: a clear honeyed damask laced with a musky-powdery softness and a plethora of shifting honeyed nuances. There is a green, almost rose-geranium lift up top and, in the drydown, the scent of the whole shrub, leaves, stems and petals, rather than petals alone. The honey here is luminous and fresh-jammy, never sticky, with a faint spiciness that keeps it from turning syrupy.
In perfumery
Georgian otto is prized as a transparent, radiant rose that lifts and brightens a composition without weighing it down, which is why it is layered with oud, musk and other roses to add daylight to an otherwise dark blend. In a many-rose blend it can sit among four single-origin rose oils, from Georgia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria and India, contributing the clear, musky-honeyed facet that distinguishes it from its sharper or fruitier siblings. A few drops read clean and floral-fresh; in concentration it turns velvety and powdery without losing its lit-from-within clarity.
Good to know
True Georgian rose otto is a clear, thin oil that congeals at cool room temperature (around 68°F / 20°C) and re-liquefies in the hand, a hallmark of an unadulterated otto. It is distinct from a rose absolute, which is darker, deeper and more wine-jammy, and from synthetic rose accords built on geraniol and damascones, which lack its living green, whole-plant complexity. Like all genuine damask ottos it is precious and costly, hundreds of pounds of blossoms yield a single ounce, so its presence signals real botanical content, not a rose flavoring.
Blackcurrant
Tart cassis with a wild, animalic snarl
What it is
From Ribes nigrum, a small deciduous shrub grown across Europe, notably Burgundy. Perfumery rarely uses the berry; the prized material is cassis bud absolute, hexane-extracted from the resinous leaf buds, often supplemented by sulphur-containing aroma molecules that capture the fruit's pungent tartness.
How it smells
Sharply fruity and tart, the bud absolute carries a green, leafy, almost catty pungency with a sweat-like, sulphurous bite beneath the berry sweetness. The effect is wild and unmistakable: ripe blackcurrant fruit edged with green sap and a faintly animalic growl.

A top note delivering tart fruit and a bracing green realism that lifts a composition. It sharpens rose and adds bite to fruity-floral and chypre accords. Cassis is a classic chypre opening and a recurring jolt in modern fruity perfumes.
Good to know
The catty, sulphurous facet comes from trace thiols so potent they register at parts per trillion, the same molecule family behind the scent of cat spray and certain Sauvignon Blanc wines. A drop of cassis bud absolute goes a very long way.
Civet
Animal warmth that makes flowers bloom indecent
What it is
A glandular paste from the African civet, a nocturnal cat-like mammal secreting it from a perineal pouch, historically scraped out by hand and tinctured in alcohol. Modern perfumery instead uses synthetic civetone, a large-ring ketone whose macrocyclic structure was elucidated by Leopold Ruzicka in 1926.
How it smells
Raw and undiluted it is shockingly fecal, pungent and indolic, edged with skatole and sour butter. Diluted to traces it turns warm, honeyed and slightly leathery, with a tobacco hum and skin-like radiance. The shift from repellent to alluring happens entirely through dilution.

A base-note fixative valued for radiance and carnal warmth, lending florals a living, skin-like glow. Classic alongside jasmine and rose in animalic chypres and orientals. Trace civet shaped many vintage aldehydic florals and ambery orientals before synthetic civetone displaced the natural material.
Good to know
Civet farming confines wild-caught animals so the gland can be scraped repeatedly, and it continues on a reduced scale in Ethiopia even though synthetic civetone has displaced the natural material almost everywhere in perfumery. This perfumery civet is not the Asian palm civet behind kopi luwak coffee, a different animal in the same family.
Jasmine Sambac
The white flower of warm Eastern nights
What it is
Jasmine Sambac is a climbing shrub, Jasminum sambac, in the olive family, cultivated in India, China and the Philippines. Its small white flowers open after dusk, when their scent peaks, and the buds are hand-picked in the early morning, before they unfurl. Solvent extraction yields a waxy concrete, washed with alcohol into the absolute.
How it smells
Brighter, greener and more tea-like than grandiflorum jasmine, with less fruity heaviness. It opens crisp and slightly waxy, almost banana-tinged, then deepens into warm indolic sweetness. That indole carries an animalic, narcotic undertone that turns heady up close yet stays clear and luminous.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for lift and body, blending with rose, tuberose, sandalwood and green tea accords. It anchors white-floral bouquets and rounds sharp citrus. Some night-blooming soliflores build almost entirely on Sambac, and it threads through countless tea-floral compositions.
Good to know
Sambac is the Philippine national flower, sampaguita, strung into garlands and used to scent Chinese jasmine tea. Because the blooms are tiny and picked by hand every morning across a long season, the absolute ranks among the costliest florals in a perfumer's palette.
Tonkin Musk
The gold standard every musk is measured against
What it is
Tonkin musk is genuine deer musk taken historically from the gland of the male musk deer (Moschus) of Tonkin, the mountainous region of northern Vietnam and adjacent southern China. It is the single most legendary grade of natural musk ever traded, the benchmark against which Kashmiri, Mongolian, Tibetan and every other deer musk is judged. Today's artisanal Tonkin is sold as long-held vintage stock rather than newly taken glands, a provenance that is close to impossible to verify from outside the trade. Genuine deer musk is CITES-listed and moves across borders only under permit, which keeps authentic Tonkin among the rarest materials in all of perfumery.
How it smells
The raw material's signature is depth married to sweetness: a velvety, fuzzy, warm-blooded animalic heart wrapped in honeyed, waxy, almost chocolatey richness, with a slightly fruity glow and a powdery suede finish. It carries the unmistakable animalic 'bite' of real musk, yet stays suave and radiant rather than sharp or fecal. A single drop intoxicates and clings for days, diffusing with a luminous, skin-warming radiance no other musk matches. The grade is what gives Tonkin its near-mythic reputation among collectors.

Good to know
Do not confuse this with the 'white musk' on most ingredient lists; that is synthetic (Galaxolide, ethylene brassylate and the like), clean and one-dimensional precisely because it lacks the depth, fruity-chocolate facets and living warmth of the real gland. Among true deer musks, Tonkin is the sweetest, deepest and most floral-friendly; Mongolian reads calmer but more sharply animalic, Kashmiri drier and more barnyard. Because authentic Tonkin can no longer be sourced new, a fragrance built on genuine vintage pods is effectively unrepeatable.
Beeswax
Golden honeyed wax, the warmth of the hive
What it is
Beeswax is secreted by worker honeybees (Apis mellifera) from abdominal glands to build honeycomb. For perfumery the raw wax is solvent-extracted into an absolute, a dark golden semi-solid carrying the residual honey, propolis and pollen aromatics trapped within the comb during the bees' work.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and animalic, leading with honeyed richness over a soft beeswax-candle facet. Beneath lies a hay-like, tobacco-tinged depth with floral and faintly fecal undertones from propolis. It feels golden, waxy and rounded, recalling honeycomb, freshly snuffed candles and sun-warmed wax.

Good to know
Beeswax absolute is costly because the raw wax yields under one percent absolute, so it takes roughly a hundred kilos of wax for one kilo of absolute. Bees themselves consume about eight kilos of honey to make a single kilo of wax, compounding its scarcity and price.
Sandalwood
Creamy meditative woods that breathe in slowly
What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.

Good to know
Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Plantations of Santalum album grown near Kununurra in Western Australia now sustainably recreate the original creamy profile.
Castoreum
Leather and warmth drawn from the beaver
What it is
An animal secretion from the castor sacs, paired cavities under the skin between the pelvis and tail base in both male and female beavers, whose contents blend with urine to mark territory. Trappers dry the sacs, then extract a tincture, resinoid or absolute. Most modern perfumery now relies on synthetic recreations.
How it smells
Dark, warm and leathery, with smoky, tar-like and faintly medicinal birch-tar facets. Beneath the animalic depth sit sweeter tones of dried fruit, hay and vanilla, plus a whiff of new leather and woodsmoke. Heavily diluted, it turns soft, suede-like and skin-warm.

Beavers eat willow and poplar bark rich in salicin, giving castoreum a salicylate, almost aspirin-like character. It has long been used as a flavouring material as well as a perfumery one, though falling use and ethical concerns mean genuine castoreum is now rare and mostly synthetic.
Wild Kepi Agarwood
Resinous heartwood that perfumers call liquid gold
What it is
Agarwood is the dark, resin-soaked heartwood that Aquilaria trees produce only after a wound or mould infection triggers their defence. The fungus-fighting oleoresin saturates the wood over years, and steam or hydro-distillation draws it into oud oil. Real distilled oud is among the costliest materials in perfumery, sold by the gram.
How it smells
Living and shifting rather than fixed: smoke, animal warmth, damp forest floor, leather and incense braided together. Sesquiterpenes carry an almost fermented depth while chromones lend leathery sweetness. It breathes on skin, moving from barnyard funk through balsamic resin to a quiet, meditative woodiness.

True agarwood oil is the spine of Arabian attars and the prize of all-natural artisan houses, who distill it themselves. CITES protection and ruinous cost mean most commercial perfumes labelled oud instead lean on a synthetic accord.
Good to know
Profile changes radically with origin, tree species, fungus and ageing, which is why oud is discussed like wine terroir. Grades climb from plantation oils to wild double-superior batches, peaking at kyara, the rarest and most prized grade once reserved for emperors and temple incense. Aquilaria and Gyrinops sit in CITES Appendix II under Annotation 14, which exempts finished products packaged and ready for retail trade; the exemption expressly does not reach wood chips, beads, prayer beads or carvings, which still travel on CITES documents.
