A New Yorker sent east
Ensar is a New Yorker from Queens who first met oud at Sufi gatherings, where small stalls sold the oil. In 2004 he started selling oils in New York City under the name Oriscent. Early in 2005 he moved to Amman to live near his sheikh, who sent him to the Far East to find the finest oud. After trouble with copycats, the business took his own name, Ensar Oud, in 2012. Its parent company is still registered in Queens.

Perfumes built around one oil
The oils came first, and the perfumes grew out of them. Ensar builds each one around a single named oil and chooses the other materials to set it off. Kyara de Kalbar starts from an oil distilled from Bruneian kynam shavings. EO2 Tonkin draws on old Vietnamese musk from a sultan's vault, Musk Yusuf on musk pods from a royal treasury, and Jamaican Ambergris on grey ambergris kept for decades in a royal patron's collection.

Village stills and long waits
The distilling happens in villages in Thailand, Cambodia and elsewhere in Asia, where master distillers work to Ensar's detailed instructions. The wood has come from the forests of Burma, Borneo, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, and each batch is labelled on its own so the differences can be studied. Many oils then rest for five to twelve years, sometimes longer, before release. In 2011 the house began its Organic Oud project, raising cultivated trees slowly, with no chemical shortcuts, to test them against wild agarwood.
