The Story

Grey Ambergris
The long-cured tobacco-marine heart of whale gold
What it is
Ambergris is a waxy concretion the sperm whale forms around indigestible squid beaks, expelled at sea and cured for years to decades by sun, salt, and oxidation. Grey is the prized intermediate grade: aged far longer than fresh black but not weathered all the way to the pale, near-spent white. Artisanal houses build whole ambergris lines on grey lumps cellared for decades (a cornerstone piece may have sat in a royal patron's personal collection for some forty years), while others lean on brown-grey-white qualities to temper raw black. This is genuine beach-found ambergris, tinctured in alcohol and matured for months, never the Ambrox/Cetalox (semi-synthesised from clary sage) that stands in for it commercially.
How it smells
Marine and mineral-salty up top (wet stone, sea spray, sun-warmed driftwood), laced with a dry tobacco-leaf and hay sweetness that reads as cured rather than sugary. Underneath runs a soft animalic warmth that smells less like an animal than like clean human skin: that famous radiant glow that makes flesh smell faintly of itself. There's a velvety, almost powdery roundness here that fresh black lacks and white has nearly lost; grey is the grade where character and refinement meet.

Grey sits between two siblings worth naming: fresh black still smells of manure, stable, and barnyard and needs years more curing, while aged white is the palest and most refined (sweet, marine, almost powdery, but the faintest and least animalic). Grey keeps the marine-tobacco warmth and skin-radiance that white has surrendered to time. Because beach-found whale ambergris is rare, gathered from the tideline without harming a whale, and decades in the making, true grey at tincture strength is among the costliest materials in natural perfumery, and no synthetic captures its salty, breathing, living quality. The law does not turn on how a piece was found: in the United States and India, possession and sale are prohibited whatever its origin.
Purple Sultani Oud
Sultan Qaboos-style oud with a purple floral heart

Purple Sultani is Ensar Oud's distillation in the legendary "Sultani" style, the chord tied to Sultan Qaboos, whose passion for agarwood saw wood gathered from jungles across the range and distilled at his own royal distillery in Oman. The material is sinking-grade resin, cut from Malay and Brunei-grade slabs, so heavy with oil it drops in water, and "Purple" marks its kinship to the purple-kinam character of Ensar's prized Kinam ouds. This is genuine natural oud oil, not a synthetic "oud accord" rebuilt from Iso E and woody-ambers.

The signature is a deep purple-kinam floral heart, the plum, raspberry and molasses sweetness with an iris-toned, incense-like depth that connoisseurs say "smells of flowers" rather than wood. It opens with a dry, crystalline, almost piercing kinamic edge, then settles into a velvety, faintly animalic resinous warmth with none of the rough fecal sting of cheaper oud. Do not expect medicinal, leather-and-stable "Hindi" oud, the sour-then-incense profile of Assam, or the stewed-fruit sweetness of Cambodi distillations; Purple Sultani is the floral, kinamic antithesis of all three. Apply sparingly: it blooms and projects from the smallest touch, and the purple-floral signature grows clearer over the first half hour. Each release draws on a finite stash of vintage Sultani material, so batches are essentially unrepeatable.
Terengganu Oud
Malaysia's purple jam: berried, resinous, narcotically smooth

Terengganu oud is wild agarwood from the Aquilaria malaccensis trees of Terengganu, the resin-rich east-coast Malaysian state, distilled into pure oud oil. In its finest form it is a vintage, sinking-grade material, oil distilled from heartwood so saturated with resin it runs dark as obsidian. This is the canonical 'Malaysian jam' oud: thick, deep, and fruity rather than the medicinal screech of an Indian oil.

The signature is a plum-and-berry sweetness laid over dark, burgundy-glazed resin: fruity, molasses-thick, with whispers of vanilla, black pepper and clove smoldering underneath. What truly marks it is a violet-tinged, herbaceous 'purple' character (an 'ultraviolet' rather than the usual blue), creamy and floral without being jasmine-sweet. True vintage Terengganu is effectively unrepeatable: old-growth malaccensis of this grade no longer reaches the market, so genuine oils trade as collector material at collector prices and reward a pinhead dab. Don't confuse it with its Malaysian cousins: Kelantan runs darker, heavier and more jungle-woody, while neighboring Borneo (Kalimantan/Sabah) skews cool, fresh and blue. If an oud is described as fruity-plummy, purple-floral and smooth rather than smoky-medicinal, you are smelling the Terengganu signature.
King Super Oud
Ensar Oud's densest matured Malaysian Tigerwood sinker
What it is
King Super is not a region but a proprietary Ensar Oud grade designation reserved for the house's densest, most heavily resinated sinking-grade agarwood. It is the matured endpoint of Ensar's famed Tigerwood material (old-growth Malaysian agarwood named for the black resin stripes running through it), aged a further decade or three until the oleoresin saturates the wood so completely that it sinks in water and the oil turns nearly black. Ensar treats it as a benchmark, irreplaceable tier, noting this caliber 'cannot be distilled today.' This is real single-origin natural agarwood, never a synthetic oud accord.
How it smells
King Super opens dark, sooty and black-resinous, like a dense forest floor rolled in coffee grounds and bittersweet cacao, with a thin wisp of smoke and a faint Peru-balsam sweetness underneath. Beneath that sits a cool, almost minty camphoric lift and a brooding, treacle-thick resin that gives it weight without sharpness. An evergreen, medicinal classic-Malaysian core holds for hours: refined rather than raw, the rougher edges of younger oud sanded smooth by age.

Smell it next to its siblings to place it: a Cambodi is fruity, sweet and stewed; a Thai or Hindi turns barnyard, leathery and animalic-medicinal; a fresh Borneo skews green and lifted. King Super sits at the opposite extreme: maximum density, dark and treacly, with the fruit cooked out and the funk absent. Being a vintage sinker grade it is exceptionally limited and priced accordingly, and its longevity and tenacity far outlast a young oud distillation.
Blue Oud
A blue-cool oud parfum, no dye required
What it is
Blue Oud is Ensar Oud's 18-Karat Gold Bespoke pure parfum chasing one of agarwood's rarest traits: a genuinely blue-toned oud. It is built around Brunei resin (including Kyara de Kalbar distilled from Brunei Kynam shavings) and braided with Malaysian malaccensis, Sri Lankan agarwood, and a fraction of Sultan Fatih oud from New Guinea, lifted by natural aromatics of cypress, lily, sage, and chamomile. The blueness is not dye but, by the distiller's account, azulene-type pigments that can form during distillation of certain malaccensis and Sri Lankan woods. Ensar pointedly contrasts this with mass-market 'blue ouds' that are just pigmented liquids, even warning buyers up front that 'the juice won't be blue.'

Jambu Oleoresin
Electric daisy that hums on the tongue
What it is
Jambu Oleoresin is a concentrated extract of Acmella oleracea, a Brazilian flowering herb called toothache plant, buzz buttons or paracress. The resinous extract is rich in spilanthol, the alkylamide behind the plant's famous tingling, saliva-prompting kick when its yellow, red-eyed flowerheads are chewed.
How it smells
Citrus-herbal and tropical, sharp and green with a watercress-like bite and a curious musty coolness. More striking than the odour is the sensation: a faintly effervescent, numbing tingle that mimics the prickle of carbonation or a low electric buzz against skin.
In perfumery
Rare in fine fragrance, it is used in trace amounts for a tactile, trompe-le-nez effect rather than as a scent pillar, adding fizzy lift and a cooling buzz to citrus, aquatic and herbal accords. It pairs with bergamot, mint, ginger and pepper, lending sherbet-like animation to top notes.

Spilanthol is a mild local anaesthetic, which is why chewing the flower numbs the mouth and earned the plant the name toothache plant. The same tingling compound now appears in lip plumpers, anti-wrinkle cosmetics and effervescent oral-care products rather than mainstream perfumery.
Jasmine Sambac
The white flower of warm Eastern nights
What it is
Jasmine Sambac is a climbing shrub, Jasminum sambac, in the olive family, cultivated in India, China and the Philippines. Its small white flowers open after dusk, when their scent peaks, and the buds are hand-picked in the early morning, before they unfurl. Solvent extraction yields a waxy concrete, washed with alcohol into the absolute.
How it smells
Brighter, greener and more tea-like than grandiflorum jasmine, with less fruity heaviness. It opens crisp and slightly waxy, almost banana-tinged, then deepens into warm indolic sweetness. That indole carries an animalic, narcotic undertone that turns heady up close yet stays clear and luminous.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for lift and body, blending with rose, tuberose, sandalwood and green tea accords. It anchors white-floral bouquets and rounds sharp citrus. Some night-blooming soliflores build almost entirely on Sambac, and it threads through countless tea-floral compositions.
Good to know
Sambac is the Philippine national flower, sampaguita, strung into garlands and used to scent Chinese jasmine tea. Because the blooms are tiny and picked by hand every morning across a long season, the absolute ranks among the costliest florals in a perfumer's palette.
Georgian Rose
The sunlit, honey-clear damask of the Caucasus
What it is
Georgian Rose is the otto (steam/hydro-distilled essential oil) of Rosa damascena grown in the valleys of the Caucasus, in the Republic of Georgia. In an all-natural house where rare botanicals are distilled and blended in-house, it appears as a genuine single-origin rose oil rather than a reconstituted rose accord, often set beside other true ottos so each origin keeps its own voice. Being the otto and not the solvent-extracted absolute, it carries the lighter, more crystalline top of the flower rather than the dark, jammy depth that extraction pulls out.
How it smells
Sunny, bright and glowingly warm: a clear honeyed damask laced with a musky-powdery softness and a plethora of shifting honeyed nuances. There is a green, almost rose-geranium lift up top and, in the drydown, the scent of the whole shrub, leaves, stems and petals, rather than petals alone. The honey here is luminous and fresh-jammy, never sticky, with a faint spiciness that keeps it from turning syrupy.
In perfumery
Georgian otto is prized as a transparent, radiant rose that lifts and brightens a composition without weighing it down, which is why it is layered with oud, musk and other roses to add daylight to an otherwise dark blend. In a many-rose blend it can sit among four single-origin rose oils, from Georgia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria and India, contributing the clear, musky-honeyed facet that distinguishes it from its sharper or fruitier siblings. A few drops read clean and floral-fresh; in concentration it turns velvety and powdery without losing its lit-from-within clarity.

True Georgian rose otto is a clear, thin oil that congeals at cool room temperature (around 68°F / 20°C) and re-liquefies in the hand, a hallmark of an unadulterated otto. It is distinct from a rose absolute, which is darker, deeper and more wine-jammy, and from synthetic rose accords built on geraniol and damascones, which lack its living green, whole-plant complexity. Like all genuine damask ottos it is precious and costly, hundreds of pounds of blossoms yield a single ounce, so its presence signals real botanical content, not a rose flavoring.
Frangipani
Tropical petals breathing coconut and almond cream
What it is
Frangipani is the flower of Plumeria, a small tropical tree in the Apocynaceae family grown across the Pacific, Caribbean and India. The waxy five-petalled blooms keep releasing scent after picking, so the aroma is captured by solvent extraction or CO2 into an absolute, occasionally by traditional enfleurage.
How it smells
A creamy, sweet white floral with a pronounced coconut-and-almond lactonic softness, ripe peach or apricot fruit, and a green, slightly spicy edge. Less indolic than jasmine or tuberose, it reads sunny and milky, opening fresh and petalled before settling into warm, custardy sweetness.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing solar, tropical creaminess to white-floral and beachy compositions. It blends with coconut, ylang-ylang, jasmine, sandalwood and vanilla. Soliflore and sun-warmed compositions explore its lactonic, solar character.
Good to know
Yields are brutally low, well under a tenth of a percent from flower to concrete, so true frangipani absolute is scarce and most commercial accords are reconstructions. The name is widely traced to a Renaissance Roman noble family whose almond-scented perfume was used to perfume leather gloves.
Bourbon Vanilla
The deepest, creamiest cured pod from island plantations
What it is
Bourbon vanilla is the cured seed pod of the orchid Vanilla planifolia, grown on Madagascar, Reunion, and the Comoros, and named for Reunion, formerly the Ile Bourbon. Hand-pollinated flowers yield green pods that are blanched, sweated, and slowly sun-dried for months to develop their aroma.
How it smells
Rich, dark, and creamy, with boozy rum-and-raisin warmth and a smooth balsamic sweetness deeper than ordinary vanilla. Beneath the cream sit subtle facets of tobacco, prune, and woody spice. It unfolds slowly on skin and lingers as a soft, enveloping sweetness.
In perfumery
A base note and workhorse fixative that adds warmth, body, and edible sweetness. It anchors orientals and gourmands and pairs with tonka, benzoin, and sandalwood. Vanilla forms the plush core of classic oriental compositions and the dessert-like drydown of modern gourmands.
Good to know
Vanilla is the second-costliest spice after saffron, since each flower opens for one day and must be hand-pollinated within hours. The name signals geography, not whiskey, though cured Bourbon pods do carry a naturally boozy, slightly fermented depth from their curing.
Haitian Vetiver
The brightest, most refined root of all
What it is
Haitian vetiver is the essential oil steam-distilled from the washed, sun-dried roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides grown in the limestone hills of southern Haiti, the origin that supplies roughly half the world's vetiver. Artisanal houses distill and bottle it neat as a 'Haitian Khus' and weave it into oud compositions, while others reach for true Haitian root in oud-centered work. This is single-origin natural material rather than a reconstituted vetiver accord, prized because Haiti's terroir yields what perfumers consider the cleanest, most refined grade of the root.
How it smells
It opens bright and zesty, with a grapefruit-and-green-soap lift that no other vetiver carries, then settles into a sweetish, light-bodied heart that is grassy, faintly floral and creamy. Beneath the citrus sparkle runs a smooth roasted-root warmth, a whisper of burnt wood and incense-green resin rather than heavy smoke. The overall impression is clean, airy and elegant, more polished and luminous than dark or dirty.

Because its sesquiterpenes are heavy and slow to evaporate, vetiver acts as a superb natural fixative, and Haitian oil in particular improves with age much like oud does. Artisanal houses favor it as a top-to-base spine in green, citrus and woody compositions, where its grapefruit edge keeps a fragrance fresh while the root anchors it to the earth. It also matures beautifully worn neat, layered and rich enough to stand alone as a soliflore of root.
Good to know
Don't confuse it with smoky Javanese vetiver, which is dense, leathery and the most intensely earthy of the three, or with Bourbon (Réunion) vetiver, which is rounder, mineral and carries nutty, caramel-licorice balsamic sweetness. Haitian is the brightest, driest and most floral of the family, with that signature citrus shimmer. When a fragrance simply lists 'vetiver,' it is most often Haitian oil, but the artisanal grade used by these houses is a world above mass-market material.
Massoia Bark
Warm coconut cream pressed from a rainforest tree
What it is
The bark of Cryptocarya massoy, an evergreen Lauraceae tree endemic to the rainforests of New Guinea. Steam-distilling the harvested bark yields an oil dominated by C-10 massoia lactone, the molecule behind its creamy character, alongside a C-12 lactone homologue.
How it smells
Intensely fatty and milky-coconut, with a buttery, lactonic sweetness verging on cloying. It opens warm and creamy, like toasted coconut and warm milk, then dries to a soft dairy skin-warmth carrying a faint dried-fruit, almost rum-like undertone.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material adding creamy, milky coconut volume and a sun-warmed-skin softness. It rounds gourmands, tropical florals and beach accords, blending with tonka, sandalwood, vanilla and ylang. The isolated lactone underpins many modern coconut-and-milk skin scents.
Good to know
Both the natural bark oil and pure massoia lactone are IFRA-prohibited as severe skin sensitisers, so strong its sensitisation test could not be completed. Perfumers now build the effect from other creamy lactones, while wild Papuan bark grows scarce because harvesting kills the tree.
Peru Balsam
Warm vanilla cinnamon bleeding from wounded bark
What it is
Peru balsam is an aromatic oleoresin from Myroxylon balsamum (pereirae variety), a legume-family tree grown almost entirely in El Salvador's Costa del Balsamo. Harvesters scorch and beat the bark, then pack the wounds with cloths that are boiled to release a thick, dark, fragrant balsam.
How it smells
A deep, sweet, balsamic warmth recalling vanilla, cinnamon and benzoin, with a smoky, slightly leathery, almost cola-like richness. It opens resinous and faintly tarry, then settles into a soft powdery sweetness with hints of clove and dried fruit.
In perfumery
A base note and fixative that lends warmth, sweetness and longevity to amber, oriental and gourmand accords. It pairs with vanilla, tonka, labdanum and tobacco. It deepens classic ambers and recurs across vanillic, balsamic and church-incense compositions.
Good to know
The name is a misnomer: the resin reached Europe through a Peruvian port, but the trees grow in Central America. Because crude balsam is a potent contact allergen, the raw exudation is barred as a fragrance ingredient and only its extracts and distillates may be used, capped at 0.4% in finished cosmetics, so houses work with purified fractions instead.
Mysore Sandalwood
The creamy gold standard of fragrant wood
What it is
Heartwood of Santalum album, a slow-growing semi-parasitic tree historically prized from the Mysore region of Karnataka, India. The dense inner wood and roots are chipped and steam-distilled. Fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood, which begins to scent the wood at around ten years and deepens with age; a tree is seldom worth taking before fifteen or twenty.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a rounded woody-sweet body and a faint sour-buttery edge that turns almost lactic. Warm rosy and balsamic facets sit underneath. It opens smooth and unfolds slowly, drying into a quiet, skin-like, persistent woodiness without sharpness or smoke.
In perfumery
A base note valued for long, smooth tenacity and its power to fix and round other materials. It pairs with rose, jasmine, violet and oud. Mysore-rich sandalwood defines the great vintage milky-woody orientals and lends a creamy woody heart to countless smooth, skin-like compositions.
Good to know
Indian sandalwood was over-harvested nearly to collapse; standing trees and trade fall under strict Indian government license and auction control. Genuine aged Mysore oil has grown rare and costly, pushing perfumers toward plantation-grown Australian Santalum album and synthetics like Javanol.
Oakmoss
The damp green soul of the forest floor
What it is
Oakmoss is not a true moss but a lichen, Evernia prunastri, growing on oak and other deciduous bark across temperate Europe and North Africa, notably the Balkans, France and Morocco. The harvested thalli are solvent-extracted into a dark, viscous concrete and absolute, the raw materials used in perfumery.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and forest-green, with damp bark, wet stone and a leathery, inky undertone. A dry, faintly bitter mossiness carries marine and tar-like facets. The effect is shadowy rather than fresh, evoking the cool floor beneath old trees after rain has soaked the ground.
In perfumery
A base note and the backbone of the chypre family, lending structure, depth and a vintage signature. It pairs classically with bergamot, labdanum and patchouli. It defines the great peach-spiced chypres and the green core of classic galbanum florals, plus countless mossy fougères and masculines.
Good to know
Oakmoss extracts contain atranol and chloroatranol, potent skin allergens the EU prohibited outright in cosmetics in 2017 (Regulation 2017/1410, applying from August 2019). IFRA separately requires low-atranol grades, each molecule below 100 ppm in the extract, and caps the extract itself at 0.1% in fine fragrance; that older ceiling, not the atranol measures, is what quietly reshaped how the classic chypre smells.
Fragrance Character
