Oud Sultani: Kannan Koh
The Story
The Kannan Koh edition is formulated around a grade and profile of oud that the house regards as belonging to another era, one it considers unreplicable today. Each bottle carries 7.75 grams of oud in total, including 1.5 grams of Kannan Koh alongside seven additional aged ouds. That density of material is the point: the composition exists as a record of what those materials, combined, once smelled like.
Sweet

Nepalese Spikenard
High-mountain root of damp earth and old wood
What it is
Spikenard, the amber oil steam-distilled from the rhizomes of Nardostachys jatamansi, a small flowering perennial of the Himalayas growing at roughly three to five thousand metres through Nepal, Sikkim, Kumaon and Bhutan. The aromatic underground rhizomes are dug by hand, dried, then distilled.
How it smells
Heavy, rooty and musty, smelling of damp earth, old wood and moss with a faintly animalic edge. Close to its relative valerian but darker and warmer, it carries a spicy-bitter undertone that can read almost goat-like at full strength, settling into a deep, calming, soil-like base.
In perfumery

This is the biblical nard the Gospel describes being poured over Christ's feet, prized in the ancient world as costly perfume. Overharvesting has made wild Nardostachys jatamansi a protected, threatened species, so responsible sourcing and cultivation now matter greatly.
Bourbon Vanilla
The deepest, creamiest cured pod from island plantations
What it is
Bourbon vanilla is the cured seed pod of the orchid Vanilla planifolia, grown on Madagascar, Reunion, and the Comoros, and named for Reunion, formerly the Ile Bourbon. Hand-pollinated flowers yield green pods that are blanched, sweated, and slowly sun-dried for months to develop their aroma.
How it smells
Rich, dark, and creamy, with boozy rum-and-raisin warmth and a smooth balsamic sweetness deeper than ordinary vanilla. Beneath the cream sit subtle facets of tobacco, prune, and woody spice. It unfolds slowly on skin and lingers as a soft, enveloping sweetness.

Vanilla is the second-costliest spice after saffron, since each flower opens for one day and must be hand-pollinated within hours. The name signals geography, not whiskey, though cured Bourbon pods do carry a naturally boozy, slightly fermented depth from their curing.
Vintage Orris
The frostiest, most aristocratic root in perfumery
What it is
Vintage orris is the waxy, semi-solid "butter" steam-distilled from the rhizomes of Iris pallida (the pale lavender Dalmatian iris grown mainly in Tuscany), not the cheaper, earthier Iris germanica or any lab-made ionone/irone substitute. The roots spend roughly three years in the ground, are dug and dried, then aged a further three years or so while odorless iridals oxidize slowly into the fragrant alpha-, beta-, and gamma-irones that give orris its scent. "Vintage" stock is held even longer than the standard cycle, so the irones continue to round out and deepen. Combined with pallida's distinctive irone profile, it is among the costliest naturals on earth, sold by irone percentage (commonly 8-15%).

Cold and silvery on top: a powdery, buttery violet that smells less like a flower and more like the inside of a leather glove or a freshly peeled carrot. Good to know
Because it is a butter, not a free-flowing oil, vintage orris is firm or waxy at room temperature and is dosed in tiny amounts; its scent is potent and its price punishing. The "vintage"/aged distinction is real chemistry, not just marketing: longer maturation continues to mellow and deepen the irones, which is why aged pallida butter commands a premium over young stock and over germanica material. If a perfume smells powdery-violet for pennies, it is almost certainly synthetic irones; true vintage orris is rare, traceable to Italian pallida, and unmistakably creamier and cold-rooty in a way the synthetics rarely match.
Castoreum
Leather and warmth drawn from the beaver
What it is
An animal secretion from the castor sacs, paired cavities under the skin between the pelvis and tail base in both male and female beavers, whose contents blend with urine to mark territory. Trappers dry the sacs, then extract a tincture, resinoid or absolute. Most modern perfumery now relies on synthetic recreations.
How it smells
Dark, warm and leathery, with smoky, tar-like and faintly medicinal birch-tar facets. Beneath the animalic depth sit sweeter tones of dried fruit, hay and vanilla, plus a whiff of new leather and woodsmoke. Heavily diluted, it turns soft, suede-like and skin-warm.

Beavers eat willow and poplar bark rich in salicin, giving castoreum a salicylate, almost aspirin-like character. It has long been used as a flavouring material as well as a perfumery one, though falling use and ethical concerns mean genuine castoreum is now rare and mostly synthetic.
Jasmine
The heady white flower at perfumery's beating heart
What it is
Jasmine is the blossom of climbing shrubs in the olive family, chiefly Jasminum grandiflorum, grown in Egypt, India and Morocco, plus Jasminum sambac from India. The fragile flowers are picked by hand from before first light into the morning, solvent-extracted with hexane into a waxy concrete, then washed with ethanol to yield the absolute.
How it smells
A warm, lush white floral, sweet and honeyed with an animalic underside. Sambac leans green, tea-like and luminous; grandiflorum reads fruitier and creamier, with more weight. Both carry a heady, narcotic richness over a green-fruity opening, drying to a soft, skin-warm, faintly mushroomy-musky base.

Rose
The queen of flowers, fresh and endlessly deep
What it is
Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery
A heart note of extraordinary range, rose adds body, freshness and natural floral richness, blending with almost anything. It anchors the chypre and floral families and pairs with oud, patchouli and violet. It is the showpiece of countless classic floral and chypre compositions.
Good to know
It takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of hand-picked blossoms to distill a single kilogram of rose otto, which helps explain why the oil can rival precious metals in price. Picking begins before sunrise and runs into the morning, while the flower still holds its oil.
Violet Leaf
Cool green leaf breathing crushed grass and cucumber
What it is
An absolute drawn from the leaves of Viola odorata, the sweet violet, grown chiefly around Grasse in France and in Egypt. Fresh leaves are washed with solvent into a waxy concrete, then alcohol-extracted into a thick, deep-green liquid. Roughly one ton of leaves yields under a kilogram.
How it smells
Crisp, green and watery rather than floral. It opens with crushed leaf and cut grass over a cold cucumber tang and a faintly metallic edge. As it settles, a dry, slightly leathery and earthy facet emerges, far drier than the candied purple flower itself.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note prized for green freshness and a transparent leathery lift. It pairs with iris, rose, cucumber and leather and cools fougeres. It is a signature note in classic green-leather compositions; many violet-leaf openings also lean on synthetic methyl octine carbonate.
Good to know
Its character is carried by a single trace molecule, (2E,6Z)-nonadienal, called violet leaf aldehyde or cucumber aldehyde, present at around one percent yet doing most of the smelling. The same compound is exactly what makes freshly cut cucumber smell green.
Tigerwood 1991 Oud
Vintage wild Malaysian tigerwood, jammy red-musk velvet
What it is
Tigerwood 1991 is a single-lot pure agarwood oil from Ensar Oud, distilled full-spectrum (no fractionation) in 1991 from wild West-Malaysian Aquilaria of the prized 'tigerwood' grade, heartwood shot through with black resin striations that resemble tiger stripes. The brothers behind it bought up all the tigerwood they could find while the material was still gettable; today the same wood runs into the thousands per kilo and the oil cannot be remade at any price. It is a heritage Malaysian oud, not a Hindi, Cambodi, or Thai distillation, and certainly nothing synthetic.
How it smells
It opens green and camphoraceous: a cool, mentholated, floral-spicy pitch that rises and falls like the sweetness lifting off a tiger chip set over heat. Beneath sits the lot's signature: a dense, jammy-fruity, almost leathery body with a dark West-Malaysian floral edge, threaded by a red-musk hum that is deep and settled. After three decades of aging it has turned velvety and creamy rather than dusty, drying down sweet, cool, and incense-grade with no trace of harsh barnyard funk.

This is a connoisseur's neat oil, applied by the dab to pulse points, not blended into a pyramid, and it performs as a complete composition on skin over many hours. Kannan Koh Oud
Vanished West-Malaysian sinking oud, a purple-plum kinam
What it is
Kannan Koh is Ensar Oud's proprietary name for an olden-days West Malaysian, sinking-grade agarwood at the heart of its Oud Sultani / Purple Kinam family. Despite the South-Indian ring of the name, the material is genuinely Malaysian heartwood so resin-saturated it sinks in water, hand-distilled from old logs of a grade no longer coming to market. It is real single-origin agarwood used as the anchor of a tiny, numbered multi-oud extrait, where Kannan Koh oil (1.5g) is welded to vintage co-distillates like Tigerwood 1991 and aged Burmese Myitkyina.
How it smells
It opens as a dense purple plume, plum-fruited and musky-sweet, closer to a sticky kyara (kinam) sherbet than to ordinary distilled oud. A wild, deep-purple floral heart unfolds: Nepalese spikenard infused into jasmine and rose with violet leaf and vintage orris, all warmed by castoreum, Bourbon vanilla and raw agarwood resin. Within Ensar's own purple-kinam lineage (Oud Sultani, Purple Kinam, Brunei Kynam), Kannan Koh is prized as a once-in-a-lifetime grade. Raw Agarwood
The wood itself on the coal, not the oil
What it is
Raw agarwood is the actual resin-impregnated heartwood of Aquilaria trees (the solid chips and splinters, unheated and undistilled), the same material burned over coal as bakhoor. Connoisseur houses grade and sell it as wood (Hindi from Aquilaria malaccensis, Thai/Trat from Aquilaria crassna), valued for resin density and slow burn rather than oil yield. Crucially, no distillation has happened: the chip gives only a faint sweet-woody scent cold, and opens fully when it meets heat, releasing the volatiles directly from the wood matrix instead of from a separated oil. This is oud in its rawest, most material form.
How it smells
Heated raw wood reads drier, woodier and smokier than oud oil: resinous incense-wood laced with cedar and a cool camphor edge, finishing on a clean, faintly honeyed smoke rather than syrup. It carries far less of the fermented barnyard funk and none of the jammy stone-fruit sweetness that distilled Hindi or Cambodi oils develop. Hindi chips push earthy, leathery and dense; Thai/Trat chips lean brighter, sweeter and more sandalwood-clean. The throw is airborne and ephemeral; it fills a room as smoke, then fades, where an oil would cling oily and tenacious to skin.

Raw agarwood is rarely a bottled perfume ingredient; it is a burning material, used as bakhoor and incense and as the connoisseur's reference for what 'real oud' smells like before fermentation and distillation skew it. Its profile is the template natural perfumers chase when they want oud to read as dry temple-smoke and resinous wood rather than as the heavy, animalic oil note. In a fragrance context it signals the smoky, cedar-camphor incense facet of oud, deliberately stripped of the fruity-fermented sweetness. Tasting the raw wood teaches the nose to tell a clean resinous oud from an oil-driven one.
Good to know
Because raw wood is graded on resin content and species rather than distillation house, two chips can smell worlds apart: a dense Hindi chip burns dark and leathery while a Trat chip burns sweet and bright, so origin and grade matter more than the word 'oud.' It is a heat-activated material: on a low coal it gives clean honeyed smoke, while too-hot a coal scorches it into acrid char. Agarwood chips are named in the carve-out to CITES Annotation 14, so the retail exemption that covers a finished bottle does not reach them and shipments need CITES export or re-export documents. The personal-effects allowance is one kilogram per person. Keep a coal burner dedicated to raw wood, since scented bakhoor leaves residue that taints the next burn.
Tonkin Musk
The gold standard every musk is measured against
What it is
Tonkin musk is genuine deer musk taken historically from the gland of the male musk deer (Moschus) of Tonkin, the mountainous region of northern Vietnam and adjacent southern China. It is the single most legendary grade of natural musk ever traded, the benchmark against which Kashmiri, Mongolian, Tibetan and every other deer musk is judged. Today's artisanal Tonkin is sold as long-held vintage stock rather than newly taken glands, a provenance that is close to impossible to verify from outside the trade. Genuine deer musk is CITES-listed and moves across borders only under permit, which keeps authentic Tonkin among the rarest materials in all of perfumery.
How it smells
The raw material's signature is depth married to sweetness: a velvety, fuzzy, warm-blooded animalic heart wrapped in honeyed, waxy, almost chocolatey richness, with a slightly fruity glow and a powdery suede finish. It carries the unmistakable animalic 'bite' of real musk, yet stays suave and radiant rather than sharp or fecal. Do not confuse this with the 'white musk' on most ingredient lists; that is synthetic (Galaxolide, ethylene brassylate and the like), clean and one-dimensional precisely because it lacks the depth, fruity-chocolate facets and living warmth of the real gland. Among true deer musks, Tonkin is the sweetest, deepest and most floral-friendly; Mongolian reads calmer but more sharply animalic, Kashmiri drier and more barnyard. Because authentic Tonkin can no longer be sourced new, a fragrance built on genuine vintage pods is effectively unrepeatable.
Ambergris
Sea-aged whale gold breathing warm salt air
What it is
Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the gut of the sperm whale, thought to coat the indigestible squid beaks it swallows. Produced by perhaps one percent of whales, it is expelled and drifts for years at sea, oxidizing under sun and salt before washing ashore as lumps.
How it smells
Fresh ambergris is fecal and marine; aged, it turns sweet, animalic and softly mineral. The scent is warm and skin-like, with tobacco, dry seaweed, old wood and a salty, faintly sweet musk. It reads less as a sharp odor than as warmth, diffusion and breath.

Its bulk constituent is the near-odorless triterpene ambrein, whose oxidation products ambroxide and ambrinol carry the scent. Though salvageable in some countries, ambergris is illegal to collect, possess or sell in the United States, protected as a sperm-whale product under marine-mammal and endangered-species law; India bans possession and sale as well, while Australia restricts only its commercial import and export. Single boulder-sized finds have sold elsewhere for hundreds of thousands of dollars, earning the nickname floating gold.
