Ensar Oud
Purple Rain: Überblau
The Story
Überblau began as a reformulation of Ensar Oud's Iris Ghalia, with rose replacing the original jasmine sambac and an older iris extract brought in so the two florals could properly interweave. The Überblau edition carries roughly three times the oud load of the standard batch, anchored by a rare Yunnan oud-musk infusion that the house describes as bluer than Purple Kinam itself. Because that Yunnan material is finite and irreplaceable, production was limited to a small number of bottles.
Fruity
Ripe orchard flush of juice
The succulent sweetness of peach, pear, apple, or berry, soft and dewy with a nectar-like ripeness distinct from sharp citrus. It brings a playful, mouthwatering roundness that feels youthful, juicy, and lighthearted.
Lactonic
creamy milk and warm skin

Blueberry
A berry with no extract behind it
What it is
Blueberry carries too little volatile oil to distil or extract, so no blueberry essential oil, absolute or CO2 extract exists at commercial scale. Every blueberry note is an accord. The aroma-chemical route rests on ethyl 2-methylbutanoate, gamma-decalactone, methyl anthranilate and raspberry ketone, with a trace of beta-damascenone. Botanical houses have no berry extract either and work sideways, through osmanthus, orris and violet leaf.
How it smells
The aroma-chemical build is vivid and immediate, cool blue-purple, candied and high in definition, and it holds that shape through the opening. A botanical reconstruction reads softer and hazier, jammier and greener, closer to suggestion than to snapshot, and it moves as it dries, the fruit slipping toward flowers and powder.
In perfumery
Blueberry belongs to the top and early heart of fruity florals, gourmands and fresh compositions, where it flatters violet, soft woods and musk. It is fugitive in either build and usually needs musks or lactones underneath to register past the opening. The chemical route carries at trace dose, while the botanical route asks for more material and more balancing.
Good to know
With no bottled blueberry to measure against, a convincing berry is always a piece of construction. Aroma-chemicals repeat exactly and hold up in bases that would flatten naturals. Osmanthus, orris and violet leaf cost more, shift with harvest, and give a quieter, less literal berry that keeps changing on skin.
Orange Peel
Sun in the rind, bright and bittersweet
What it is
Orange comes from Citrus sinensis, the sweet orange tree cultivated across the Mediterranean, Brazil and Florida. The aroma material is cold-pressed from the peel, where tiny glands hold the essential oil. Bitter orange and its blossom and leaves yield separate materials such as neroli and petitgrain.
How it smells
Bright, juicy and immediately recognizable: sweet pulp over a zesty, slightly bitter rind. It opens sparkling and effervescent with a sunlit tang, then softens into a rounder, candied sweetness. Compared with lemon it is warmer and less sharp, more rounded and sugary on the skin.
In perfumery
Almost always a top note, prized for a radiant, cheerful burst that fades within an hour. It pairs with neroli, bergamot, clove and warm spices, and anchors classic colognes and gourmand openings. It sparkles in Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine and countless traditional eaux de cologne.
Good to know
Citrus oils are highly volatile and oxidize quickly, which is why orange-heavy fragrances feel brilliant but brief. Cold-pressed sweet orange peel oil carries almost none of the furocoumarins behind citrus photosensitivity, so unlike bergamot, lime or bitter orange it is not treated as phototoxic in sunlight.
White Carnation
A clove-peppered bloom with old-fashioned spice
What it is
The flower of Dianthus caryophyllus, a Mediterranean pink cultivated for centuries. True flower extraction is barely viable, so the perfumery carnation is reconstructed from eugenol and isoeugenol, the clove molecules, layered with ylang, rose and ionones to mimic the bloom's natural spicy-floral chemistry.
How it smells
Spicy and dry, dominated by warm clove and black pepper laid over a soft, slightly powdery rose-petal sweetness. It reads honeyed and peppery at once, with a green stemmy bite up top that fades to a faintly waxy, old-rose warmth as it dries.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing spice and floral structure, classic to spicy florals and carnation soliflores. It pairs with rose, ylang, clove and vetiver. It defines Caron Bellodgia and the peppery Caron Poivre, and lends spicy warmth to Roger & Gallet Oeillet Bleu.
Good to know
Carnation's spice ties straight to its botanical name: caryophyllus and the clove tree Syzygium aromaticum share eugenol, the same clove molecule. The flower's popularity faded as IFRA tightened limits on eugenol and isoeugenol over skin-sensitization concerns, making faithful carnation accords harder to dose.
Grapefruit
Bitter-bright citrus burst with a sulfurous tang
What it is
Grapefruit oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus paradisi, a large subtropical citrus that arose as a natural hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange in the Caribbean. Mechanical expression ruptures oil glands in the rind, releasing a fragrant oil rich in limonene with trace nootkatone and sulfur compounds.
How it smells
Sharp, juicy and effervescent: tart citrus with a distinctive bitter rind edge and a faintly sweaty, sulfurous tang that reads as true grapefruit. It opens with a fizzy, mouth-watering brightness, then fades quickly, leaving a clean, slightly soapy and bitter-green impression behind.
In perfumery
A top note delivering an instant burst of freshness and a modern, slightly bitter sparkle, pairing with neroli, mint, vetiver and woody-amber bases. It is the bright opening of countless citrus-forward colognes, pomelo-themed eaux and many contemporary sport and unisex scents.
Good to know
Grapefruit's signature smell comes mostly from trace molecules: nootkatone and grapefruit mercaptan (1-p-menthene-8-thiol), the latter detectable at a fraction of a part per trillion. The oil is phototoxic from furocoumarins, so it is often used in furocoumarin-free form or capped under fragrance-safety guidelines.
Cherry
A stone-fruit accord built around one aldehyde
What it is
Cherry gives no usable essential oil, so the note is always assembled. Benzaldehyde carries it either way, the bitter-almond molecule behind the Prunus stone fruits, supported by fruity esters in an aroma-chemical build. A botanical build works from rectified bitter almond oil, which runs above ninety-eight percent benzaldehyde, with davana, rose and tonka bean set around it.
How it smells
The aroma-chemical version is vivid and forward, the cherry of cordials and confectionery, with a sharp candied edge that holds one shape. A botanical reconstruction reads softer and jammier, nuttier at the pit. It shifts as it warms, davana pulling toward dried fruit and rose lending a quieter sweetness underneath.
In perfumery
Cherry sits in the opening rather than the base. Benzaldehyde is volatile and short-lived on skin, so the accord is legible early and then hands over to whatever lies beneath it, usually almond, vanilla, tonka or amber. It is dosed against that handover rather than expected to last.
Good to know
Natural and synthetic benzaldehyde are the same molecule at close to the same purity, and commercial supply is overwhelmingly synthetic. The molecule itself is not the tell. What separates the two routes is everything set around it: whole botanicals bring their own facets and vary by harvest, while a chemical build stays identical batch to batch.
Iris
Cool powdered earth from a patiently aged root
What it is
Perfumery iris comes not from the flower but the rhizome of Iris pallida and Iris germanica, grown mainly in Tuscany and Morocco. The dug rhizomes are dried and aged three to five years so aromatic irones develop, then ground and steam-distilled into waxy orris butter.
How it smells
Cool, powdery and rooty, suggesting violet, suede and fresh-sawn wood dusted with face powder. There is a damp earthy minerality, a faint carrot-like sweetness and a buttery, almost doughy softness. It feels silvery and restrained, more texture than perfume, lingering quietly on skin.
In perfumery
A precious heart-note material giving powdery elegance, cool depth and a velvety, refined backbone to chypres and florals. It pairs with violet, rose, sandalwood and ambrette. It is the soul of cool powdery masculines, austere green florals and minimalist orris-forward compositions.
Good to know
Orris butter is among perfumery's costliest materials: a tonne of dried, aged rhizome yields only about two kilograms of butter, and high-irone grades can fetch tens of thousands of euros per kilo. The multi-year aging that builds its scent is what makes true iris so rare.
Rose
The queen of flowers, fresh and endlessly deep
What it is
Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery
A heart note of extraordinary range, rose adds body, freshness and natural floral richness, blending with almost anything. It anchors the chypre and floral families and pairs with oud, patchouli and violet. It is the showpiece of countless classic floral and chypre compositions.
Good to know
It takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of hand-picked blossoms to distill a single kilogram of rose otto, which helps explain why the oil can rival precious metals in price. Picking begins before sunrise and runs into the morning, while the flower still holds its oil.
King Super Oud
Ensar Oud's densest matured Malaysian Tigerwood sinker
What it is
King Super is not a region but a proprietary Ensar Oud grade designation reserved for the house's densest, most heavily resinated sinking-grade agarwood. It is the matured endpoint of Ensar's famed Tigerwood material (old-growth Malaysian agarwood named for the black resin stripes running through it), aged a further decade or three until the oleoresin saturates the wood so completely that it sinks in water and the oil turns nearly black. Ensar treats it as a benchmark, irreplaceable tier, noting this caliber 'cannot be distilled today.' This is real single-origin natural agarwood, never a synthetic oud accord.
How it smells
King Super opens dark, sooty and black-resinous, like a dense forest floor rolled in coffee grounds and bittersweet cacao, with a thin wisp of smoke and a faint Peru-balsam sweetness underneath. Beneath that sits a cool, almost minty camphoric lift and a brooding, treacle-thick resin that gives it weight without sharpness. An evergreen, medicinal classic-Malaysian core holds for hours: refined rather than raw, the rougher edges of younger oud sanded smooth by age.
In perfumery
As an oil it is worn neat or used as a precious heart material, prized for projecting bittersweet, resinous depth without the bite of a green distillation. In Ensar's own work it functions as a luxury reinforcement, dosed by the gram into premium blends such as Tigerwood: King Super, where it lacquers raw cacao in coffee and tobacco over a dark oud base. Because supply is fixed and finite, it reads as a connoisseur's signature note rather than a workhorse base.
Good to know
Smell it next to its siblings to place it: a Cambodi is fruity, sweet and stewed; a Thai or Hindi turns barnyard, leathery and animalic-medicinal; a fresh Borneo skews green and lifted. King Super sits at the opposite extreme: maximum density, dark and treacly, with the fruit cooked out and the funk absent. Being a vintage sinker grade it is exceptionally limited and priced accordingly, and its longevity and tenacity far outlast a young oud distillation.
Yunnan Oud
China's rarest agarwood: cool incense laced with honeyed musk
What it is
Yunnan Oud is distilled from agarwood grown in China's Yunnan province along the Chinese-Indochinese border belt, where the tree is Aquilaria yunnanensis, a Xishuangbanna species distinct from the Aquilaria sinensis of Hainan and Guangdong that yields Chinese kynam. It is among the scarcest of all single-origin ouds: Chinese collectors absorb most of what is distilled, so very little is released for export, which makes it rarer than many Vietnamese oils. The finest lots are aged roughly two decades before release, an oud that can no longer be made, since Aquilaria is a protected plant in China and CITES governs its export. This is true natural oud oil, not a reconstructed oud accord.
How it smells
The Chinese signature is a dry, incense-like, meditative restraint, laced with a cooling camphoraceous edge and a faint medicinal bitterness from its sesquiterpene- and chromone-rich profile. What sets Yunnan apart is an unmistakable honeyed, almost pheromonal sweetness no other agarwood region carries, threaded through frankincense, myrrh and raw musk. Aged lots open with a salty animalic flash of leather and barnyard, then resolve over hours into osmanthus, dried orange peel and aged tobacco. The overall impression is bright, clean and refined rather than fecal or rough.
In perfumery
Yunnan oud is treated as a connoisseur's meditation oil, worn neat for its complexity rather than blended into commercial compositions. Its smoky-resinous incense character pairs naturally with frankincense, myrrh, osmanthus, tobacco and deer musk, the last of which deepens its native animalic warmth. Because the sweetness can soften the woody complexity, it rewards small applications and patient wearing. It is a building block reserved for the highest tier of artisanal oud, not mass fragrance.
Good to know
Compared to its siblings, Yunnan lacks the sharp pungency of Hindi (Assam) oud, the jammy stone-fruit sweetness of Cambodi, the cool camphor-and-vanilla lift of Borneo, and the leathery smoke of Thai; its closest proxy is fine Laotian oil, but with a vibrant earthiness nearer to vintage Vietnam. Decades of aging leave genuine Yunnan oil clean and spotless, with no sour off-notes. It is subtle and refined to a fault, often described as shy or subdued next to louder ouds, so it rewards a quiet setting and an experienced nose. Authentic wild Yunnan is extremely limited and priced accordingly.
Nha Trang Kinam
The cooling, numbing summit of Vietnamese oud
What it is
Nha Trang Kinam is oud from the rarest grade of Aquilaria agarwood, kinam (the Chinese kynam, Japanese kyara), from the Nha Trang / Khánh Hòa coast of Vietnam, the connoisseur summit of Vietnamese oud. Unlike everyday oud chips, kinam is wild, intensely aged, glutinous-resinous wood so saturated with oil that the best pieces sink in water, and the resource is all but exhausted. Specialist houses distill it from sinking-grade chips, so a vial represents the top fraction of one of the world's most cherished oud regions. This is not a synthetic 'oud accord'; it is a tiny-batch natural distillate of an almost unobtainable material.
How it smells
Cooling, sappy and numbingly smooth, kinam famously sends a burst of camphor and mint through the head, with that cooling lift connoisseurs prize. Over that runs a floral-honeyed sweetness, a bittersweet-sour Vietnamese brightness, and a glowing red resinous depth rather than smoke. It is silky and high-pitched where lesser oud is dense, leathery or barnyard. The signature is that paradox: a deep agarwood resin that reads cool and crystalline, not hot.
In perfumery
Used by artisanal natural-perfume houses as a precious heart-and-base oud: often worn neat, a single dab, to be studied rather than blended away. Good to know
Genuine Nha Trang kinam is among the most expensive oud materials on earth and is effectively a collector's grade, so authentic offerings are tiny, numbered, and quickly sold out. Confirm it is real wild Nha Trang kyara distillate, not 'kinam-type' or a reconstructed accord, which mimic the name but not the cooling numbness. Apply sparingly: a single dab opens cool and almost shy, then blooms over hours, and the experience is about nuance, not projection.
Natural Musk
Real deer musk, animalic gold of old perfumery
What it is
Natural musk is the dried glandular secretion from the abdominal pod of the male musk deer, genus Moschus. Once the most precious aromatic on earth, worth more than its weight in gold, it is harvested as small dark grains and tinctured slowly in alcohol over months to years.
How it smells
Raw and concentrated it is shockingly animalic, fecal, urinous and barnyard. Diluted to a whisper, often one part in thousands, it turns warm, sweet, leathery and radiantly skin-like, with a powdery sensual hum that seems to glow from within rather than sit on top.
In perfumery
Its signature molecule is muscone, a macrocyclic ketone. Beyond scent, musk was the legendary fixative that bound and amplified a whole composition. Today only a handful of artisanal all-natural houses tincture genuine deer musk, working from vintage stock or from material released under licensed national quota.
Good to know
Traditional harvesting killed the animal, and historically vast numbers of deer were taken per kilogram of pods. All musk deer have been CITES protected since 1979, so trade is tightly restricted and virtually all commercial musk is now synthetic. Genuine deer musk in perfume is rare, costly and legally fraught.
Fragrance Character
Blueberry and grapefruit open fruited and tart, giving way quickly to iris and carnation, cool and faintly spiced. Rose surfaces in the heart, warmer now, but the kinam keeps everything slightly resinous and mineral. On the drydown the oud complex takes over entirely, sitting close to the skin with a waxy, almost indigo-dark depth that lingers long after the florals have receded.
