A filmmaker in Bucharest
David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi made films before he made perfume. He works from Bucharest, where Toskovat' was registered as a Romanian company in 2022, and his family line is both Russian and Ukrainian. The name is the Russian verb toskovat', to feel toska: a restless sadness that often has no clear cause, running from deep anguish at one end to plain boredom at the other.

Extraits de mémoire
Each perfume is an extrait de mémoire: a short journal entry that opens with the words Today I remembered, paired with a note list that mixes real materials with things no one can bottle. Inexcusable Evil, a statement on modern war, lists gunpowder, blood, bandages, iodine and burning flowers, and by late 2023 it was outselling the rest of the range three to one. Anarchist A♭ lists dirty dollars, holy water and an old confession room. Pornstar (Noyau Doux) starts on ice, finger lime and a pornstar martini.

Three hundred materials and a picture
Some of his accords have taken more than two years, and he wore the same formula in Bucharest, Paris, Milan and Dubai to learn how climate changes it. His organ holds more than 300 materials, and private commissions can call for tinctures, CO2 extracts and rare flower oils. Every box holds a small black and white image by the house artist. Domus Numeni, once called Take Me To Church, marked the third anniversary in a run of 300, built on candlewax, olibanum, myrrh and Vietnamese oud.
