Alessandro Gualtieri, the Italian perfumer who signs himself The Nose, has worked in fragrance for more than thirty years, with fashion houses including Versace and Fendi among his clients. Nasomatto came first; Orto Parisi, his second house, followed in Amsterdam in 2014. The name joins orto, Italian for vegetable garden, with the surname of his grandfather Vincenzo Parisi, who collected his own waste in buckets to fertilise that garden. Paul Rigter's 2017 documentary, The Nose: Searching for Blamage, follows him at work.

Gualtieri composes the perfumes himself and does not reveal their notes. The perfumes are made in Italy, each a parfum in 50 ml of thick glass under a metal cap. Bergamask wears antique gold with inlaid light horn, Stercus bronze with Ethiopian cow horn, and Megamare tumbled silver with a green salt patina and a Haitian seashell. Each box unfolds into a small metropolis around a hole at its centre. The company runs from Veemarkt in Amsterdam, the same address as Nasomatto.
