Born next door to Marly
Julien Sprecher was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, next to the Château de Marly, and grew up in a family that lived around fragrance. His father was tied to Guerlain in the Middle East. Julien trained at Guerlain and Orlane, then worked in the family distribution company across Asia and the Middle East before he launched Parfums de Marly in 2009. The house is run from rue de la Paix in Paris, and in 2021 its retail sales stood at 130 million euros, 50 million of them in the United States.

Louis XV's horses as a blazon
The name comes from the Château de Marly, the private estate where the king received his closest circle, far from the etiquette of Versailles. In 1743 Louis XV ordered marble horses for its entrance from the sculptor Guillaume Coustou. The originals now stand in the Cour Marly at the Louvre, and the house takes its horse emblem from them. Sprecher named his fragrances after horse breeds and wants each one round, bright at the top and clear at the base. Parfums de Marly Delina Exclusif sets lychee and pear over Damascena rose, incense and vanilla.

Composed with Givaudan, made in France
Every Parfums de Marly perfume is produced in France. Sprecher, founder and creative director, sets the idea for each scent and works with outside perfumers. Quentin Bisch of Givaudan had signed five for the house by 2023: Carlisle, Delina, Delina Exclusif, Delina La Rosée and Valaya. Valaya took the pair three years. Bisch built it on the idea of cotton against skin, with white peach, orange flower, Akigalawood and musk, and he wanted a white bottle in glass that is half clear, half opaque.
