Argos builds fragrances like miniature myths, each one a scene from the old stories rendered in scent. Bright, sun struck openings tumble into something warmer and more decadent, fruit and flowers up top, resins and skin and wood underneath. Wearing one feels less like a note pyramid and more like stepping into a painting.

A Dallas model turned perfumer

Christian Petrovich, an American of Italian and Russian descent, modelled for more than twenty years in New York, Milan, Paris, Dallas and Miami, acted in film and television, and developed land in Dallas. He taught himself perfumery. His first client, a Greek shipping businessman, pushed him towards the mythology he knew well. Argos launched in 2014, at first a one-man business run from his Dallas apartment, selling to local boutiques. He still composes the line and models in its campaigns.

Myths, and the paintings behind them

The name comes from Argus Panoptes, the many-eyed giant of Greek myth. Each perfume retells one Greek or Roman story, often through a single painting. Argos Fall of Phaeton follows Peter Paul Rubens' version of the boy who lost the sun's chariot, with cardamom, pink pepper, labdanum, agarwood and leather. Argos Neptune's Trident draws on Johann Michael Rottmayr's sea god, with green tea, ambergris and iris. Argos Triumph of Bacchus goes for saffron, rum, tobacco and Mysore sandalwood.

Heavy glass and painted metal

The perfumes are produced in a private lab in Grasse, with blending and maceration at a second lab in Nice. The formulas are paraben-free and go to IFRA for review. The bottle is thick glass that weighs more than a pound and stands like a column. A recess on the front holds a solid metal relief that Petrovich designs for each story, painted by hand and set with crystals. Argos Neptune's Trident comes as extrait de parfum.
