A trunk-maker and a Grasse nose
Louis Vuitton opened his first shop at 4 rue des Capucines in Paris in 1854, and the house is still run from the city. Its perfume belongs to Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, born in Grasse, where his father, grandfather and great-grandfather were all perfumers. At Firmenich he composed Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey. Louis Vuitton named him its Master Perfumer in 2012, with the task of bringing the house back to fragrance.

Built to travel
When the collection arrived in 2016 it was the first Louis Vuitton perfume since 1946, and travel shaped it: the designs include a travel spray fed by four 7.5 ml cartridges that clip on by magnet. Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade sets oud wood against benzoin, incense and raspberry. Louis Vuitton Imagination leans on a heavy dose of Ambrox with black tea from China. Louis Vuitton Pacific Chill, a cologne, pairs blackcurrant with cédrat and lemon.

Newson's glass, Gehry's curves
Marc Newson designed the bottle: clear glass, the name in black lettering, and a black cap stamped with brass LV initials that hides the atomiser. Bottles can be refilled in boutiques fitted with a perfume fountain. For Les Extraits, five concentrated perfumes including Louis Vuitton Symphony, Frank Gehry stretched Newson's lines into curves for his first perfume bottle. Cavallier works from a Grasse atelier with a garden of some 400 plants, and the oud in Louis Vuitton Myriad comes from a single supplier in Bangladesh.
