Attrape-Rêves means dream catcher, and Cavallier Belletrud describes the brief as the euphoria of an encounter nobody saw coming. The peony is pulled off its usual polite register by raw cocoa and litchi.

Litchi

What it is
The fruit of Litchi chinensis, a subtropical evergreen tree native to southern China, bearing rough red shells over translucent white flesh. Its high water content makes meaningful distillation impossible, so the litchi note is a synthetic reconstruction built from aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
Juicy, sweet and floral: ripe tropical fruit shot through with rosy-metallic freshness and a cool, watery transparency. It opens bright and candied, almost rosewater-like, then softens to a delicate fruity-floral hum carrying faint green and dewy facets.
In perfumery
A top note driving fruity-floral and fresh modern blends, valued for sparkling juiciness. Its rose-oxide chemistry makes it a natural partner for rose, peony and freesia. It anchors the fruity-rose accord at the heart of many modern rose bouquets.
Good to know
Litchi and rose share the molecule cis-rose oxide, which is why the fruit smells faintly floral and folds so seamlessly into rose accords. The same compound, alongside geraniol, gives the Gewurztraminer grape its surprising lychee-like aroma.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.
Good to know
Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. IFRA caps how much expressed bergamot oil a leave-on product may carry, so perfumers either dose within that limit or reach for a furocoumarin-free (FCF) grade.
Ginger
Fresh peppery zing with a fibrous warmth
What it is
Ginger is the underground rhizome of Zingiber officinale, a reed-like tropical herb cultivated in India, China and Nigeria. The knobby root is steam-distilled or CO2-extracted; distillation gives a fresh, sparkling oil, while the CO2 extract captures the warm, pungent gingerol of the fresh root more fully.
How it smells
Bright, dry and peppery, with a fizzy lemon-pine sparkle over earthy, fibrous warmth. The top is fresh and zesty, almost soapy-citrus; underneath sits a spicy heat without the sweetness of cooked ginger. CO2 extracts smell rounder, juicier and closer to the raw rhizome.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice that injects vitality and a clean, modern warmth, lifting citrus, sharpening woods and animating aquatic and fougere structures. Ginger drives the heart of crisp peppery masculines, the candied facets of bright floral colognes, and the watery spice of monsoon-inspired garden scents.
Good to know
Ginger has been a prized trade spice for over five thousand years, valued in Asian medicine long before it reached European kitchens. The plant rarely flowers in cultivation and is propagated entirely from rhizome cuttings, so harvested gingers are essentially clones of one another.
Peony
Dewy ruffles, fresh and quietly green
What it is
Peony is the spring bloom of Paeonia species, both herbaceous and tree peonies, grown widely in China, Europe and North America. The living flower yields no extractable oil at usable scale, so its scent is reconstructed by perfumers from rosy, green and watery aroma-chemicals built around a chosen accord.
How it smells
Fresh, dewy and translucent: a soft rose heart lightened with crisp green stems, a watery petal coolness and a faint honeyed sweetness. It feels airy and modern rather than heavy, more pale pink than red, with a clean, just-opened-bud transparency that never turns jammy.
In perfumery
A heart note delivering luminous, romantic floralcy and a contemporary lightness. It pairs with rose, lychee, freesia, magnolia and white musks in pink fruity-florals. Pink peony opens the modern Chloe Eau de Parfum and shimmers through countless fresh feminine bouquets and spring-toned compositions.
Good to know
Because no natural peony extract exists at usable scale, every peony note is a perfumer's interpretation, so two peonies can smell quite different. The flower is also prized in Chinese culture as a symbol of honor and wealth, and was long called the king of flowers.
Turkish Rose
Spiced honey petals from the Isparta valleys
What it is
Rosa damascena grown in Turkey's Isparta region, where small farms hand-pick blossoms from before sunrise into the morning, before the heat scatters the oil. Steam distillation of the blossoms yields rose otto, while solvent extraction produces the deeper, redder rose absolute used for its fuller, jammier facets.
How it smells
Fresh, fruity and spicy, with a honeyed glow and a green, faintly peppery edge. Against the sweeter, denser Bulgarian rose, the Turkish material reads brighter and more transparent, opening dewy and rosy before settling into a warm, spiced, lightly clove-like depth.
In perfumery
A heart note delivering true natural rose: radiant, multifaceted and indispensable in florals, chypres and orientals. It blends with oud, saffron, patchouli and geranium. Isparta otto and absolute thread through fine perfumery wherever an authentic, lifelike damask rose is wanted.
Good to know
Roughly three to four tonnes of hand-picked blossoms distill into a single kilogram of rose otto, placing it among the costliest naturals. Isparta Rose holds a Turkish registered designation of origin, granted in 2022, restricting the name to specified districts of the province.
Cacao
Bitter dark chocolate before the sugar arrives
What it is
The roasted seed of Theobroma cacao, a small understory tree native to the tropical Americas and now grown across West Africa. Pods hold beans wrapped in white pulp; the beans are fermented, dried and roasted, then solvent-extracted into an absolute carrying the bittersweet aroma of unsweetened chocolate.
How it smells
Deep, dry and roasted, like cocoa powder or dark chocolate shavings with almost no sweetness of its own. Bitter and faintly dusty up top, with nutty, coffee-like and earthy facets, drying down into a warm, powdery brown softness that clings close to skin for hours.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base note anchoring gourmand and oriental compositions, lending edible warmth without sugar. It pairs naturally with vanilla, tonka, patchouli, orange and chili. Pioneering masculine gourmands and chocolate-themed niche scents foreground its roasted cocoa character, the latter weaving cacao through coffee and bitter orange.
Good to know
The genus name Theobroma means food of the gods in Greek, echoing cacao's sacred status among the Maya and Aztec, who drank it bitter, frothed and spiced as a ceremonial brew. Sugar-sweetened chocolate is a later European adaptation; the perfume note stays true to the original bitterness.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown overwhelmingly in Indonesia, with smaller crops in India and elsewhere in tropical Asia. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Fragrance Character
