Amouage does not do quiet. Every bottle feels built for a room you have to earn your way into, all high ceilings, incense in the air and light coming through something precious. The house pours frankincense, rose and oud like it has an endless supply, and the results wear big and last long without ever tipping into loud for its own sake.

A gift for the Sultan's guests
Amouage began in Muscat in 1983. Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi set it up at the request of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, as an Omani perfume fit to present to the Sultan's most important guests. The company trades as Oman Perfumery LLC inside the Sabco Group, a holding owned by the Omani royal family. Christopher Chong was its creative director for twelve years until 2019. Renaud Salmon, a Belgian who came from Delvaux and Louis Vuitton, joined in 2020 as chief experience officer.

Frankincense from Dhofar, roses from Jebel Akhdar
The name means waves of emotion, and the palette starts at home. Its frankincense comes from Boswellia sacra trees in Dhofar, where the Hojari grade is the most prized. Its roses grow on Jebel Akhdar in the Hajar mountains and flower for only a few weeks each April. Guy Robert set both at the heart of Gold in 1983, among more than a hundred ingredients. Later perfumes came from perfumers in Paris, Grasse, Geneva and New York, and the house now trains young Omanis to harvest resin at Wadi Dawkah, a UNESCO site.

Packed by hand in Muscat
Most Amouage perfume is made in Muscat, at a factory and visitors' centre opened in December 2012 on the site of the old headquarters, with capacity for about 20,000 bottles a week. Packing is done by hand. The bottles borrow Omani symbols: caps modelled on the handle of the khanjar, the curved ceremonial dagger, and on the dome of a Muscat mosque. Asprey of London made the flacons exclusively for the house, which sells in more than 70 countries.
