The Story
Guidance 46 carries 46 percent pure perfume, one of the Exceptional Extraits Amouage built by going back to the original perfumer and letting the concentrate age for months in Oman. Quentin Bisch balances saffron's leathery spice against pear and hazelnut, and at this strength the wood-amber drydown does most of the work.
Woody

Rose Water

What it is
Rose water is the aromatic hydrosol that condenses when rose petals, usually Rosa damascena, are steam- or water-distilled. As the rose oil separates and rises, the remaining fragrant water retains the flower's water-soluble molecules. It has been produced for centuries across Iran, Bulgaria and Turkey.
How it smells
Light, transparent and dewy, with a clean fresh-rose character far softer than concentrated rose oil. Petally and faintly green at the top, it carries a gentle honeyed sweetness without the jammy density or metallic edge of absolutes. The effect is airy, cool and almost edible, like rose-scented mist.
In perfumery
Evoked as a fresh, gauzy floral accent at the top or heart, lending dewiness and a hammam-like softness. It pairs with citrus, neroli, almond, lychee and saffron. The aqueous rose-water effect drives transparent modern roses, where rose water meets lychee for a watery, petal-wet freshness.

Pear
Every pear note is an accord, not an extract
What it is
Pear yields no usable extract. The esters that carry its scent sit at parts-per-million in the fruit and are too heat-sensitive to distil, so the note is always assembled. The aroma-chemical route builds it on pear ester, ethyl (2E,4Z)-2,4-decadienoate, with acetates such as hexyl and butyl acetate; the all-natural route leans on Roman chamomile and ambrette seed.
How it smells
Juicy and gently sweet, with a dewy green edge and a honeyed, watery flesh. The lab-built version is crisp and high-definition, a clean snap of fruit that holds one shape across the wear. A naturals-only reconstruction is softer and blurrier, less stable, shifting toward green herb and waxy skin as it fades.
In perfumery
Pear brightens the top and early heart of fruity-florals, fresh musks and gourmands, and flatters green and tea accords. Pear ester is used sparingly, typically at or below one percent of a formula, because it takes over quickly. Roman chamomile carries green apple peel and pear facets naturally, which is what makes the botanical route possible at all.
Good to know
Only one of the four geometric forms of pear ester smells of pear, which is why the material is specified so precisely. The synthetic version is inexpensive and identical batch to batch. The botanical version is costly, varies by harvest and fades faster, and both routes are honest ways to render a fruit that cannot be extracted.
Hazelnut
Roasted nut warmth, sweet and softly toasted
What it is
The seed of Corylus avellana, a shrubby tree grown heavily in Turkey and Italy, which together supply most of the world crop. The edible nut is roasted to develop its aroma; in perfumery the scent is almost always rebuilt with aroma-chemicals and pyrazines, since the nut yields little fragrant oil.
How it smells
Warm, roasted and buttery, with toasted-bread and praline facets and a faint cocoa edge. It reads nutty and rounded rather than sharp, often tipping into gianduja sweetness. The effect is comforting and gourmand, sitting somewhere between coffee, hot milk and lightly burnt sugar.
In perfumery

Good to know
Much of the world's hazelnut crop is funnelled into chocolate-hazelnut spread, so the nut's roasted aroma is culturally fused with gianduja. That toasty smell owes much to pyrazines, the same class of molecules that gives roasted coffee, cocoa and baked bread their character.
Bitter Almond

What it is
The classic scent comes from benzaldehyde, the molecule in the kernels of bitter almonds, apricot and peach stones, and cherry pits. Natural bitter almond oil is steam-distilled from pressed kernels, but the perfumery version is almost always synthesized benzaldehyde, free of toxic residues.
How it smells
Sweet, nutty and unmistakably marzipan, with a cool cherry-stone and amaretto edge. A clean, slightly powdery facet sits beneath the nutty core, recalling almond paste and crushed peach pits. It reads bright at first, then settles into a soft, creamy warmth.

Raw bitter almonds carry amygdalin, which releases hydrogen cyanide when crushed, so the almond scent is sometimes called the smell of cyanide itself. Properly distilled or synthetic material is purified of the toxin, leaving only the fragrant benzaldehyde behind.
Frankincense

What it is
Frankincense, or olibanum, is the dried gum resin of Boswellia trees, with Boswellia sacra of Oman, Yemen and Somalia among the most prized. The bark is scored and weeps a milky sap that hardens over weeks into golden tears, later steam-distilled or solvent-extracted for perfumery.
How it smells
Fresh, resinous and luminous, with a clean coniferous-citrus brightness from alpha-pinene and limonene over a dry, balsamic woody base. It carries a cool, peppery, almost lemony lift, then settles into the warm, dusty incense smoke familiar from churches and temples.

Good to know
Frankincense has been traded for thousands of years and once moved along Arabian incense routes as one of antiquity's costliest imports. Wild Boswellia populations are now declining from over-tapping, drought and grazing, raising real concern over the long-term sustainability of the harvest.
Pink Pepper
Bright rosy berries with a sparkling spice fizz
What it is
Pink pepper is the dried berry of the Peruvian pepper tree Schinus molle, native to the Andes and a member of the cashew family Anacardiaceae, not a true pepper. The rose-colored berries are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted into an oil dominated by alpha-phellandrene, limonene and pinene.
How it smells
Bright, dry and sparkling, more rosy and fruity than black pepper, with only a soft prickle of spice. Crushed-berry, juniper-like resin and faint citrus facets give a fizzy, airy lift. It flashes peppery on top, then fades quickly into a gentle warm spiciness.
In perfumery
A favoured top-to-heart note that adds effervescent spice and a rosy glow without heat or bite. It brightens florals, freshens woods and ambers, and pairs with rose, bergamot and patchouli. Its sparkle opens many modern scents, notably the tea-and-bergamot top of bright fruity-floral bombs.
Good to know
Despite the name, these berries are botanically unrelated to true pepper, Piper nigrum; the resemblance is purely aromatic. As an Anacardiaceae cousin of cashew and mango, Schinus can trigger reactions in people sensitive to that family, so culinary use of the berries is best in moderation.
Rose
The queen of flowers, fresh and endlessly deep
What it is
Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery
A heart note of extraordinary range, rose adds body, freshness and natural floral richness, blending with almost anything. It anchors the chypre and floral families and pairs with oud, patchouli and violet. It is the showpiece of countless classic floral and chypre compositions.
Good to know
It takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of hand-picked blossoms to distill a single kilogram of rose otto, which helps explain why the oil can rival precious metals in price. Picking begins before sunrise and runs into the morning, while the flower still holds its oil.
Osmanthus
Apricot and soft leather in a tiny gold flower
What it is
Osmanthus is an absolute from the tiny orange-gold flowers of Osmanthus fragrans, an evergreen shrub native to China. The hand-gathered blossoms are solvent-extracted into a waxy concrete, which is washed with alcohol to yield the absolute. Most production remains in China, with Guilin a noted center.
How it smells
A fruity-floral with vivid fresh apricot and ripe peach, wrapped in tea-like delicacy and a surprising suede or soft-leather undertone. It opens jammy and candied, then dries toward dried fruit and raisin with a faint smoky, animalic warmth lingering beneath the flowers.
In perfumery
A heart note bridging fruit, flower and leather, lending natural fruitiness without added sweeteners. It pairs with black tea, rose, leather and apricot accords. It defines refined fruity-floral and leathery-tea compositions, and colors many soft, powdery floral blends.
Good to know
It takes roughly a tonne of the minuscule flowers to yield a single kilo of absolute, ranking it among perfumery's more precious florals. In China the blossoms have flavored tea and wine for centuries, and the tree carries associations with love and the harvest moon.
Saffron
Crimson threads breathing leather, honey and dry hay
What it is
Saffron is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, a purple autumn-flowering crocus in the iris family. Each bloom yields just three slender crimson threads, plucked by hand. The dried threads are steeped into a tincture or solvent-extracted into an absolute to capture their aromatic oil for perfumery.
How it smells
Warm and dry at first, with hay, honey and toasted bread, then a metallic, leathery edge driven by the molecule safranal. Beneath runs a bittersweet, faintly medicinal earthiness and a soft rubbery warmth. It opens spicy and golden, drying into suede, tobacco and dusty amber.
In perfumery
Saffron works in the heart, bridging spice and leather and lending a glowing, reddish warmth. It pairs classically with rose, oud, amber and tobacco. Whole leathery accords can be built around it, and it is often wed to rose for a rich, spiced-floral effect.
Good to know
Saffron is the costliest spice on earth, and nothing else in the trade comes near it by weight. A single kilogram demands roughly 150,000 hand-picked flowers and many days of stooped labor. Most perfumery saffron is reconstructed from synthetic safranal or saffron bases, since the natural extract is too rare and expensive to use widely.
Jasmine Sambac
The white flower of warm Eastern nights
What it is
Jasmine Sambac is a climbing shrub, Jasminum sambac, in the olive family, cultivated in India, China and the Philippines. Its small white flowers open after dusk, when their scent peaks, and the buds are hand-picked in the early morning, before they unfurl. Solvent extraction yields a waxy concrete, washed with alcohol into the absolute.
How it smells
Brighter, greener and more tea-like than grandiflorum jasmine, with less fruity heaviness. It opens crisp and slightly waxy, almost banana-tinged, then deepens into warm indolic sweetness. That indole carries an animalic, narcotic undertone that turns heady up close yet stays clear and luminous.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for lift and body, blending with rose, tuberose, sandalwood and green tea accords. It anchors white-floral bouquets and rounds sharp citrus. Some night-blooming soliflores build almost entirely on Sambac, and it threads through countless tea-floral compositions.

Sandalwood

What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.

Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Akigalawood
Upcycled patchouli reborn as peppery whispered oud
What it is
A natural captive ingredient developed by a major fragrance-ingredient house's biosciences team in the 2010s. The enzyme laccase oxidizes alpha-guaiene-rich fractions recovered from patchouli oil production, using only water and salts, transforming a byproduct into a new aroma compound without petrochemical synthesis.
How it smells
Warm and woody with a clean, vibrant spiciness, it carries patchouli's earthiness stripped of the mustiness, lifted by pink-pepper brightness and a quiet agarwood facet. It reads as a contemporary, transparent oud-adjacent wood: dry, peppery, radiant and unmistakably modern.

Vanilla

What it is
Vanilla comes from the cured seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America, now grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia; the vanilla of Tahiti is a different species, Vanilla x tahitensis. Green pods are picked unripe, then blanched, sweated in the sun and slow-dried over months until they darken and develop their aroma and vanillin.

Ambrette
Plant musk pressed from a mallow seed
What it is
Ambrette is the seed of Abelmoschus moschatus, a hibiscus-like mallow plant native to India and grown across tropical Africa, Asia and South America. The small, musky-smelling seeds are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted to yield an oil whose musk comes from ambrettolide, a macrocyclic lactone that makes up only a small fraction of it.
How it smells
Soft, warm and genuinely musky in a way no synthetic quite matches: powdery and skin-like, with a sweet, slightly nutty amber facet and a fruity pear-and-iris floralcy. It feels velvety and human, smoother and rounder than synthetic musks, blooming slowly into a clean, intimate warmth.

Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
In perfumery
A foundational base note and the natural backbone of most amber accords, usually built with vanilla and benzoin. A strong fixative, it deepens chypres, orientals and leathers and pairs with rose, oakmoss and incense. It underpins many golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
In antiquity labdanum was combed from the matted beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had browsed through cistus thickets, then raked off with a thong-fringed tool called a ladanisterion. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials, predating distillation by millennia.
Ambergris
Sea-aged whale gold breathing warm salt air
What it is
Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the gut of the sperm whale, thought to coat the indigestible squid beaks it swallows. Produced by perhaps one percent of whales, it is expelled and drifts for years at sea, oxidizing under sun and salt before washing ashore as lumps.
How it smells
Fresh ambergris is fecal and marine; aged, it turns sweet, animalic and softly mineral. The scent is warm and skin-like, with tobacco, dry seaweed, old wood and a salty, faintly sweet musk. It reads less as a sharp odor than as warmth, diffusion and breath.
In perfumery
A prized base note and fixative, it lends warmth, diffusion and a luminous skin effect while slowing evaporation of lighter materials. Its bulk constituent is the near-odorless triterpene ambrein, whose oxidation products ambroxide and ambrinol carry the scent. Most fragrances now use synthetics like Ambroxan; rare real tinctures appear in bespoke work and vintage chypre and oriental compositions.

Though salvageable in some countries, ambergris is illegal to collect, possess or sell in the United States, protected as a sperm-whale product under marine-mammal and endangered-species law; India bans possession and sale as well, while Australia restricts only its commercial import and export. Single boulder-sized finds have sold elsewhere for hundreds of thousands of dollars, earning the nickname floating gold.
Georgywood
A cleaner, brighter cousin of Iso E Super
What it is
A synthetic woody-amber aroma-chemical developed and patented by Givaudan, made from a homomyrcene precursor as a mixture of isomers. Structurally and olfactorily related to Iso E Super, it is supplied as a pure laboratory material with no plant or animal origin whatsoever.
How it smells
Clean, intense and dry-woody, recalling cedar and ambergris with a subtle minty-green coolness and faint sweetness. It reads smoother, more transparent and more potent than Iso E Super, with a velvety radiance that clings close to skin and gives compositions soft, breathable warmth.
In perfumery
A versatile base note and fixative adding woody volume, lift and a smooth, skin-like glow. It blends almost invisibly with ambers, musks, vetiver and florals. A Givaudan captive, it underpins the soft radiant woods of many contemporary niche and designer fragrances built around transparent amber-woods.
Good to know
Only one form of Georgywood truly carries the scent: the (minus)-(1R,2S) enantiomer has an odor threshold more than a hundred times lower than its mirror image. Such an extreme gap between near-identical molecules is one of perfumery chemistry's most striking quirks.
Cypriol
Dark smoky root, the desert cousin of oud
What it is
Cypriol, or nagarmotha, is the oil of Cyperus scariosus, a wetland sedge growing wild in the marshy riverbeds of Madhya Pradesh, India. The dried rhizomes and roots are crushed and steam-distilled, yielding under a tenth of a percent of a thick, dark amber oil.
How it smells
Woody and earthy with a cold smoky underbelly, drier than patchouli and rootier than vetiver. A sharp peppery top gives way to leather, dry amber and faint tar. As it settles it reads dark, mineral and ashy, with a bitter resinous edge recalling burnt agarwood.
