The smoke is gurjan balsam, the tar perfumery uses as agarwood's affordable stand-in, dosed so thick it never thins. Ten to twelve hours, and the loudest thing on this list. Wear it outdoors, or wear it alone. From $20 for a 2 ml decant.

Everyone credits the oud. The real work is benzoin, hand-tapped from wounded Styrax trees over several seasons, which keeps the oud round instead of sharp. Its failure is social: this is the most recognised oud in niche, and among enthusiasts it will never read as yours. From $14 for a 2 ml decant.

Proof a beast need not be dark. The engine is ambroxan, the molecule built to stand in for ambergris, carrying blackcurrant and pineapple for ten to twelve hours. One strange failure: some noses go blind to ambroxan, so you may stop smelling it hours before the room does. From $16 for a 2 ml decant.

The oud takes the billing. The smoke is frankincense and opoponax, cut by hand in a short tapping season and dosed thick enough to read as ash. It fails on arrival: the first twenty minutes are oregano, pimento and hot rubber, so spray it half an hour before you walk in. From $21 for a 2 ml decant.

One material carries it: Turkish rose, picked before sunrise, at roughly three tonnes of petals for one kilo of oil. It fails in heat and at dinner, where the sweetness turns syrupy. From $22 for a 2 ml decant.

The loud ones you cannot pour

Three that belong on the shortlist are missing for a plain reason: every decant size of Orto Parisi Megamare, Amouage Guidance 46 and Adi Ale Van Decembrie 89 is sold out. They wait at the bottom of the table instead. Megamare survives only inside the Power Set above.

Beast mode FAQ

How many sprays should I use? Fewer than you think. One to two fills a room; three overwhelms a small office, where these office safe unisex fragrances serve you better. For the arithmetic, see how many sprays are in a 1ml, 2ml, 5ml or 10ml decant.

Does a bigger decant project harder? No. The 10 ml is the same juice as the 2 ml, poured from the same bottle on the same day. Size buys wearings, not strength.

The arithmetic. A full bottle of Ombre Nomade is $583. A 2 ml decant is $14 and holds roughly twenty sprays, which at one to two sprays a wearing is ten to twenty outings. What no rating settles is whether your skin holds a resin base for twelve hours or six, and whether a room reads the trail as presence or as imposition. Twenty sprays settles it.
