The Story
Caden is built on the Omani tradition of receiving a guest, which is why it opens generous and warm rather than guarded. Maxime Exler composed it around saffron, cardamom and suede over coffee and benzoin, and it was named niche fragrance of the year at Beautyworld in 2025.
Leathery
smoke-cured hide and dark suede

How it smells
Warm and dry at first, with hay, honey and toasted bread, then a metallic, leathery edge driven by the molecule safranal. Beneath runs a bittersweet, faintly medicinal earthiness and a soft rubbery warmth. It opens spicy and golden, drying into suede, tobacco and dusty amber.
In perfumery

Good to know
Saffron is the costliest spice on earth, and nothing else in the trade comes near it by weight. A single kilogram demands roughly 150,000 hand-picked flowers and many days of stooped labor. Most perfumery saffron is reconstructed from synthetic safranal or saffron bases, since the natural extract is too rare and expensive to use widely.
Boozy Notes
Composed accords that read as spirits and liqueurs
What it is
Boozy notes are the family of accords that read as spirits and liqueurs: rum, cognac, whisky, gin, wine, champagne, absinthe and sweeter liqueur effects. The label describes an effect rather than a single ingredient. With rare exceptions such as cognac oil, distilled from wine lees, these are not extracts of the drink but accords built from aromatic materials.
How it smells
The shared signature is a sharp, volatile lift, the sensation of alcohol rising off a freshly poured glass, laid over something sweet or fermented. The readings diverge from there: rum toward caramel and molasses, cognac toward grape and dried fruit, whisky toward peat, honey and barrel char, gin toward juniper, citrus peel and cool spice.
In perfumery
Boozy accords work mainly across the top and heart, where their volatility gives an opening a warm, slightly unsteady glow before heavier materials take over. Sweet readings are set against tobacco, vanilla, tonka, spice and dark woods, while drier ones lean on juniper, anise, herbs and citrus peel. Used generously, the family tips a composition gourmand.
Good to know
No perfume contains drinkable spirit. The ethanol in a bottle is denatured perfumer's alcohol, a solvent that carries the oils and flashes off within moments of spraying, so the boozy effect comes entirely from the accord. Building blocks such as rum ether, ethyl maltol, vanillin and oak lactones recur across the family, which is why different spirit notes can smell related.
Cade Juniper
Black smoke pulled from juniper wood
What it is
A tarry oil from the destructive distillation, or pyrolysis, of the heartwood, roots and branches of prickly juniper, Juniperus oxycedrus, a Mediterranean shrub. The wood is heated in oxygen-starved retorts at roughly 400 to 600 degrees Celsius, charring it and releasing a dark crude tar later rectified into perfumery grade.
How it smells
Dense phenolic smoke laced with tar, creosote and warm leather. It reads sharper and more medicinal than birch tar, drier than vetiver, with charred pinewood, guaiacol and a faint balsamic sweetness underneath. It opens acrid and campfire-like, then settles into smoky, resinous leather as it dries.
In perfumery
A base note used in trace amounts to build smoky leather, fougere, pine and forest accords, and to deepen oakmoss reconstructions. It pairs with labdanum, birch tar, vetiver and patchouli. Alongside birch tar and castoreum, cade is among the materials behind classic leather chypres like Knize Ten.
Good to know
Long sold as juniper tar, the same oil served for centuries as a veterinary and skin remedy, smeared on livestock and rubbed into scalps to treat eczema. Crude grades contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, so modern perfumery relies on carefully rectified, IFRA-restricted material.
Cardamom
Green spice cracking open with citrus heat
What it is
Cardamom is the dried seed pod of Elettaria cardamomum, a tall perennial in the ginger family native to the forests of southern India and now widely farmed in Guatemala. The small green pods are hand-picked before fully ripe and dried; the cracked seeds are steam-distilled for their oil.
How it smells
Bright, green and spicy-fresh, with a cool eucalyptus-camphor lift over warm peppery sweetness. There are facets of lemon peel, pine resin and a faint smoky breadiness, like cracked pods in chai. It opens sharp and effervescent, then settles into a soft, balsamic warmth.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice adding sparkle and an airy, modern coolness, it bridges citrus openings and woody-amber bases without the heaviness of clove or cinnamon. It pairs with bergamot, rose, leather and oud, and is the defining spark of many a modern aromatic and woody-leather scent.
Good to know
Cardamom ranks among the world's most expensive spices, behind only saffron and vanilla, because every pod is hand-harvested at a precise unripe stage. India and Guatemala dominate supply, and the green pods rapidly lose aroma once cracked, so distillers work quickly.
Cistus
Sun-baked Mediterranean shrub that bleeds amber resin
What it is
Cistus is the rockrose shrub, mainly Cistus ladanifer, growing on dry, sunny hillsides across the western Mediterranean. To survive heat its leaves and stems secrete a sticky brown resin called labdanum. Branches are boiled in water, or the gum is solvent-extracted, to yield an absolute or essential oil.
How it smells
Warm, dark and balsamic, with a leathery, ambery core. It opens slightly green and medicinal, almost herbal, then settles into resinous sweetness laced with honey, dried fruit and a faint animalic muskiness. The drydown recalls ambergris, tobacco and old polished wood.
In perfumery
A tenacious base note and natural fixative, cistus and its labdanum form the amber and leather backbone of chypre and oriental compositions. It pairs with oakmoss, patchouli and bergamot, and underpins classic chypres, leather accords and countless modern amber accords.
Good to know
Ancient shepherds in Crete and Cyprus collected labdanum by combing it from the beards and thighs of goats that had grazed among the sticky shrubs. Many scholars identify this resin with onycha, an ingredient of the biblical holy incense, and it appears in early Egyptian perfumery.
Benzoin
Warm vanilla balsam wept from a tapped tree
What it is
Benzoin is a balsamic resin from Styrax trees of Southeast Asia. Siam benzoin comes from Styrax tonkinensis (Laos, Vietnam), Sumatra benzoin from Styrax benzoin (Indonesia). Incisions in the bark make the tree exude a gum that hardens over months into reddish tears, processed into resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and balsamic with a pronounced vanilla character and powdery, ambery, faintly cinnamic facets. Siam is rounder and more vanillic; Sumatra is smokier with a cinnamon-styrax edge. It opens soft and creamy, then dries into a cozy, resinous, almost caramelized sweetness.
In perfumery
A warm base note and gentle fixative lending sweetness, body and a vanillic glow to amber accords. It blends with labdanum, vanilla, tonka and incense, smoothing orientals and gourmands. Benzoin is a defining warmth in golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
Benzoin gave its name to benzoic acid and, through it, to the chemical term benzene. The word itself traces to the Arabic luban jawi, "frankincense of Java." The resin never flows on its own; every tear is the tree healing an incision deliberately cut into its bark.
Suede
Soft brushed leather without the tannery bite
What it is
A scent impression rather than a single raw material. Suede is the napped underside of tanned hide, but in perfume it is reconstructed from synthetics like Suederal and safraleine, soft musks, ionones and gentle leather notes, since the physical material itself carries almost no usable aroma.
How it smells
Soft, dry and powdery, like the inside of a fine glove or a brushed shoe. Far quieter than birch-tar leather, it reads velvety and faintly sweet, with hints of almond, violet, heliotrope and warm skin. It opens smooth and dries down close and clinging.
In perfumery
A base and skin note prized for cushioning and a tactile, second-skin finish. It softens raw leather, rounds woods and supports iris, violet and amber. Soft powdery leather and blond-suede compositions, the latter built largely on Suederal, center this powdery suede heart.
Good to know
Suede takes its name from the French gants de Suede, gloves of Sweden, where the soft napped finishing technique was popularized. Because no plant or animal yields a true suede oil, every suede note is an accord, a perfumer's reconstruction assembled from a palette of aroma chemicals.
Coffee
The dark heart of morning, bottled
What it is
Coffee comes from the roasted seeds of Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, evergreen shrubs grown across the tropical bean belt. Each fruit holds two inner seeds that are dried, then roasted to develop aroma. Perfumers use a roasted-bean absolute, a CO2 extract, or aroma molecules built to mimic the roast.
How it smells
Dark and roasted, with bitter cocoa, toasted nuts and a faint smoky char. The opening is sharp and grainy like freshly ground beans; beneath sit caramelized, almost burnt-sugar tones. The drydown turns warmer and rounder, drifting toward chocolate, tobacco and a milky, slightly oily softness.
In perfumery
Usually a heart or upper-base note adding energy, bitterness and gourmand depth. It pairs with vanilla, tonka, patchouli, rose and amber, cutting sweetness with a roasted edge. It anchored an entire genre of masculine gourmands, and elsewhere makes coffee the unmistakable centerpiece of a composition.
Good to know
Coffee's roast aroma comes largely from 2-furfurylthiol, a sulfur molecule detectable near 0.01 parts per billion, so a trace reads instantly as fresh brew. Natural coffee extracts are unstable and fade or turn flat, so most modern coffee accords are partly or wholly reconstructed.
Tonka Bean
Warm almond-vanilla sweetness with a hay-tobacco shadow
What it is
Tonka bean is the cured seed of Dipteryx odorata, a tall South American legume tree of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana. Shelled seeds are soaked in alcohol, then dried for weeks until coumarin frosts their surface. Perfumers use a solvent-extracted absolute drawn from these cured beans.
How it smells
A warm, sweet bouquet of vanilla and bitter almond, threaded with hay, dried tobacco and toasted nuts. The opening recalls caramelized custard; the drydown turns powdery and faintly boozy, with cinnamon and cut clover. Rounder and hazier than vanilla, softer and less sharp than almond.
In perfumery
A base and heart material prized for warmth, sweetness and soft persistence. It bridges gourmand, oriental and fougère accords, pairing with vanilla, lavender, amber and tobacco. Tonka and its coumarin shaped the very first fougère, and underpin the sweet drydown of countless oriental-gourmand blends.
Good to know
Tonka owes most of its scent to coumarin, which the FDA banned as a food additive in 1954 after hepatotoxicity appeared in animal studies at high doses. So tonka is effectively illegal in American kitchens, yet remains entirely legal, and widely loved, in fine fragrance.
Vanilla
The warm sweet heart of comfort itself
What it is
Vanilla comes from the cured seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America, now grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia; the vanilla of Tahiti is a different species, Vanilla x tahitensis. Green pods are picked unripe, then blanched, sweated in the sun and slow-dried over months until they darken and develop their aroma and vanillin.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and creamy, with a balsamic depth recalling custard, caramel and dried fruit, a faint smoky tobacco-like edge sitting underneath. It opens soft and gourmand, then dries into a powdery resinous warmth that clings close to skin and reads richer than synthetic vanillin alone.
In perfumery
A base note prized for richness and lasting warmth, vanilla rounds sharp edges and anchors oriental and gourmand compositions. It pairs naturally with tonka, amber, sandalwood and spice. Many of the most enduring oriental and tobacco fragrances build their core around it.
Good to know
Vanilla ranks among the costliest spices because each orchid flower opens for one day and must be hand-pollinated, a technique devised in 1841 by Edmond Albius, a twelve-year-old enslaved boy on Réunion. Most commercial vanilla flavor now relies on synthetic vanillin.
Amberwood
Synthetic amber that glows dry and woody
What it is
Amberwood is not a plant but a perfumer's term for a family of synthetic woody-amber aroma chemicals, and the name of specific commercial materials such as Amberwood F (Boisambrene Forte). These molecules emerged as stable, affordable substitutes for natural ambergris and scarce precious woods.
How it smells
Dry, warm and radiant: a woody-amber glow with musky, slightly mineralic and faintly salty facets recalling ambergris. It reads smooth and abstract rather than sweet, with a velvety transparency. It barely shifts over time, instead spreading a soft, persistent woody halo across the skin.
In perfumery
A base note and fixative giving lasting power, diffusion and a clean amber-wood backbone. It blends seamlessly with Iso E Super, ambroxan, musks and rose. This woody-amber accord drives countless contemporary scents, from designer ambers to the dry, transparent woods of modern niche releases.
Good to know
Amberwood materials have no link to fossilized tree amber, which is essentially odorless. The name borrows amber's warm image while the molecules deliver a dependable, sustainable stand-in for endangered ambergris and rare woods, which is why so many modern perfumes share a similar amber-wood signature.
Guaiac Wood
Smoldering rosewood from the arid Gran Chaco
What it is
Guaiac wood oil comes from Bulnesia sarmientoi, a slow-growing hardwood of the Gran Chaco across Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia. Chipped heartwood and sawdust are steam-distilled into a pale amber, waxy oil that solidifies at room temperature and melts close to skin warmth.
How it smells
Warm, smoky and balsamic, like a smoldering ember rather than open flame. A soft, sweet woodiness carries a distinct tea-rose facet, with powdery, peppery and faintly tar-like nuances. It dries down rounded and quietly creamy, blurring the line between wood and gentle incense.
In perfumery
A base note valued as much for fixative power as for scent, extending and grounding a blend. It rounds rough woods and smoky leathers, pairing with rose, vetiver and tobacco. Its hushed smokiness threads through many modern niche woody and oud-style compositions.
Good to know
Bulnesia sarmientoi has been on CITES Appendix II since 2010, so logs, extracts and oil need permits as overharvesting threatens the species. Sold as Argentine lignum vitae, it is a substitute for true lignum vitae, the closely related Guaiacum genus listed by CITES decades earlier.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
In perfumery

In antiquity labdanum was combed from the matted beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had browsed through cistus thickets, then raked off with a thong-fringed tool called a ladanisterion. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials, predating distillation by millennia.
