The Story
Il Padrino is the godfather, and Nathalie Templer and Salah Al Zarooni took the title at face value: blackcurrant, rum and amaretto poured over amber, patchouli and benzoin. It is theatrical by design rather than by accident.

What it is
Black currant is the small dark berry of Ribes nigrum, a shrub native to northern Europe and Asia. Both berries and aromatic buds (cassis) carry the scent; an absolute is solvent-extracted from the buds, while the fruit facet in perfumery is usually rebuilt with aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
Sharp, juicy and tart, a burst of purple-red berry with green leafy edges and a wine-like depth. Its hallmark is a sulphurous, faintly sweaty, animalic catty undertone that keeps it from reading as merely fruity. It opens fresh and biting, then sweetens into jammy darkness.
In perfumery

The signature catty smell comes from sulphur-containing thiol molecules, the same family that gives buchu, grapefruit and tomcat spray their pungency. At a few parts per million these thiols read as ripe fruit; concentrated, they turn startlingly skunky and sharp.
Rum

What it is
Rum is a spirit distilled from sugarcane, either fresh-pressed juice or molasses, then aged in oak. In perfumery it is never a single extract but a built accord, reconstructed from molecules such as ethyl maltol, rum ether, vanillin and oak lactones to mimic the drink.
How it smells
Sweet, dark and heady: caramelized sugar and molasses up front, threaded with vanilla, dried fruit and a warm alcoholic lift. Oak aging adds woody, slightly smoky depth. As it settles, the boozy sweetness softens into toffee, spice and a leathery, tobacco-tinged warmth.

There is no true rum essential oil; the note is always a composed accord, so its intensity and style vary widely between houses. Rum ether, a core building block, is a fruity-boozy material also used in food flavoring, blurring the line between perfumery and confectionery.
Amaretto
Bitter almond warmed in Italian liqueur
What it is
A gourmand accord named for the Italian liqueur, not a distilled essence. Real amaretto draws its almond character from apricot kernels and bitter almonds; the perfumery note is reconstructed mainly from benzaldehyde, the molecule behind marzipan, rounded with vanilla and warm boozy facets.
How it smells
Sweet bitter-almond and marzipan at the core, with a syrupy, boozy warmth and a faint cherry-stone edge. It opens nutty and confectionery, close to amaretti biscuits, then settles into a creamy, vanillic sweetness with a soft alcoholic lift threaded through it.

Benzaldehyde, the heart of the almond note, also smells of cherries and is the same molecule that gives marzipan and stone-fruit pits their scent. In its natural form it sits beside trace cyanide compounds, which is why bitter-almond extract is tightly regulated.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.

Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. IFRA caps how much expressed bergamot oil a leave-on product may carry, so perfumers either dose within that limit or reach for a furocoumarin-free (FCF) grade.
Amber
A warm resinous glow built, not harvested
What it is
Amber is not one ingredient but a perfumer's accord, most often blending labdanum (a sticky resin from the Mediterranean rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer), benzoin and vanilla, sometimes with tonka or Peru balsam. Despite the name, it has no link to fossilized tree amber, which stays odorless on skin.
How it smells
Warm, soft and balsamic, a powdery sweetness sitting over dry resin. It opens honeyed and faintly animalic from labdanum, then settles into rounded golden warmth recalling beeswax, tobacco and worn leather, threaded with a quiet smoky, incense-like undertone that lingers close to the skin.

Good to know
The word once meant ambergris, the waxy intestinal secretion of sperm whales, fueling centuries of confusion among three unrelated things: fossil tree amber, whale ambergris and the resin accord. Modern amber bases are wholly plant and synthetic, leaning on molecules like Ambroxan rather than any animal source.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown overwhelmingly in Indonesia, with smaller crops in India and elsewhere in tropical Asia. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Sandalwood
Creamy meditative woods that breathe in slowly
What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.

Good to know
Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Plantations of Santalum album grown near Kununurra in Western Australia now sustainably recreate the original creamy profile.
Vanilla

What it is
Vanilla comes from the cured seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America, now grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia; the vanilla of Tahiti is a different species, Vanilla x tahitensis. Green pods are picked unripe, then blanched, sweated in the sun and slow-dried over months until they darken and develop their aroma and vanillin.

Good to know
Vanilla ranks among the costliest spices because each orchid flower opens for one day and must be hand-pollinated, a technique devised in 1841 by Edmond Albius, a twelve-year-old enslaved boy on Réunion. Most commercial vanilla flavor now relies on synthetic vanillin.
Siam Benzoin
Vanilla-balsam resin from Laotian highland trees
What it is
A balsamic resin from Styrax tonkinensis, a tree of the high plateaus of northern Laos, with smaller harvests in Vietnam and Thailand. The bark is incised from spring through summer, and the gum is gathered the following winter, bleeding white before oxidising to ivory and dark amber.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and powdery, dominated by vanilla and soft balsam with a creamy almond-pastry edge. It is rounder and more vanillic than Sumatra benzoin, and far less smoky or medicinal. The drydown is cozy and resinous, like warm sugar and faintly toasted milk.

Good to know
The Siam name comes from trade, not origin: the resin was historically shipped through Bangkok in old Siam. Its vanillin content, around one percent, supplies that vanilla warmth naturally, and the prized grade is rare and costly, with Laos producing the bulk of supply.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
