Tyrannosaurus Rex
The Story
Antonio Gardoni first considered making this smell of plastic toys, on the grounds that plastic is the first smell most people actually associate with dinosaurs. He abandoned that for the Cretaceous instead, florals torn through by smoke, leather and cade.
Fresh Spicy
Cool bite of cracked pepper
The crisp, tingling lift of pink pepper, cardamom, and ginger, peppery and almost effervescent rather than warm. It adds a bright, faceted sparkle and a clean prickle that feels modern, airy, and invigorating.
Woody

Animalic
Warm skin, musk and muscle
A raw, body-warm muskiness that reads of skin, hair, and fur, sometimes sweet and powdery, sometimes sharp and faintly feral. It feels primal and intimate, blurring the line between perfume and the person wearing it.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and skin
The dry, smoky scent of tanned hide, edged with birch tar, tobacco, and a faint bitter rasp. It feels confident and worn-in, evoking a well-loved jacket, suede gloves, and a quiet sense of authority on the skin.
Fir
A cold forest breathed in at first light
What it is
Fir scents come from true firs of the genus Abies, especially balsam fir (Abies balsamea) of eastern Canada and silver fir of Europe. Needles and young twigs are steam-distilled into a clear needle oil, or twigs are solvent-extracted into a thick, dark fir balsam absolute.
How it smells
The distilled oil is bright, green and resinous, sappy and almost fruity, with a clean coniferous coolness recalling crushed Christmas-tree needles. The absolute runs deeper and sweeter, jam-like and intensely balsamic, with a coumarin-tinged, slightly smoky warmth that lingers far longer.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note in the distilled form and a tenacious base in the absolute, fir builds forest, fougere and aromatic-woody accords. It pairs with cedar, lavender, oakmoss and incense, and anchors dense coniferous compositions such as Slumberhouse Norne and many cool-weather woody fragrances.
Good to know
Fir balsam, the sticky oleoresin tapped from blisters on balsam fir bark, was historically prized as Canada balsam, a glass-clear cement for microscope slides and lenses thanks to its refractive index matching crown glass. The same forests supplied resin for both science and scent.
Black Pepper
Dry heat that prickles and sharpens
What it is
The dried unripe berry of Piper nigrum, a tropical climbing vine grown in India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Madagascar. Green peppercorns are sun-dried until black and wrinkled, then steam-distilled to an essential oil; a cleaner, more diffusive material is obtained instead by CO2 extraction.
How it smells
Sharp, dry and warm-spicy with a crisp peppery bite that tingles the nose, wrapped in a fresh terpenic, woody-resinous tone and a faint citrus lift. The distilled oil reads bright and airy; the CO2 extract is rounder, warmer and closer to a freshly cracked peppercorn.
In perfumery
A top note adding lift, sparkle and a spicy snap to fresh, woody and fougere compositions, and a foil for rose, vetiver and amber in the heart. Some compositions build an entire scent around its dry, radiant crackle over cedar and woods.
Good to know
The prickly heat of whole pepper comes largely from piperine, a non-volatile compound that does not carry into the distilled oil, so black pepper essential oil smells aromatic but is not pungent on the tongue. Pepper was once so valued it served as currency and rent.
Bay Leaf
Noble laurel, green spice with smoky depth
What it is
Bay leaf comes from bay laurel (Laurus nobilis), an evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean, its oil steam-distilled from fresh or dried leaves and dominated by 1,8-cineole. A separate West Indian bay, Pimenta racemosa of the myrtle family, yields a eugenol-rich leaf oil used in bay rum.
How it smells
Fresh, green and aromatic with a cool eucalyptus-camphor lift from cineole, layered over warm clove-like spice and a peppery, slightly medicinal edge. Mediterranean laurel reads herbal and resinous, while West Indian bay turns sweeter and more clove-driven, almost smoky on the dry-down.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note adding aromatic green spice and a cool herbal sparkle to fougeres, chypres and masculine accords. It pairs with lavender, citrus, rum and tonka. West Indian bay defines classic bay rum colognes and lends barbershop warmth to many traditional men's fragrances.
Good to know
In antiquity laurel crowned victors, poets and emperors, giving us the word laureate. The two bays are unrelated: culinary Laurus nobilis flavors stews, while Pimenta racemosa, an allspice relative, was steeped and distilled with rum in the Danish West Indies from the 1840s to create bay rum.
Nutmeg
Warm baking spice with a hidden narcotic edge
What it is
The dried seed kernel of Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree native to Indonesia's Banda Islands and now grown in Grenada and Sri Lanka. The hard brown seed sits inside an apricot-like fruit, wrapped in red mace. It is ground for spice or steam-distilled for oil.
How it smells
Warm, dry and spicy-sweet, with a soft woody body and a faint terpenic, almost camphoraceous lift on top. Beneath the familiar baking-spice warmth runs a slightly resinous, balsamic depth and a cool medicinal edge. It feels cozy yet subtly sharp and pine-like.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice adding warmth, lift and a gourmand-ambery glow without overt sweetness. It pairs with vanilla, tobacco, lavender and woods. Nutmeg anchors spice-and-ginger pairings and forms the classic warm-spice signature of barbershop fougeres.
Good to know
Nutmeg contains myristicin, a compound that is mildly psychoactive and toxic in large doses. In the 1600s the Banda Islands were the world's only source, and control of that trade sparked colonial wars between the Dutch, Portuguese and English.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.
Good to know
Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. IFRA caps how much expressed bergamot oil a leave-on product may carry, so perfumers either dose within that limit or reach for a furocoumarin-free (FCF) grade.
Neroli
Bittersweet orange blossom distilled into white light
What it is
Neroli is the steam-distilled essential oil of the fresh white flowers of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium subspecies amara, also called bigarade or Seville orange. Blossoms are hand-picked at dawn and distilled the same day. Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt are the major sources.
How it smells
Bright, clean and floral with a green, faintly bitter edge and a honeyed metallic shimmer often likened to freshly ironed linen. It opens crisp and citrus-cool, then settles into soft, waxy petal warmth, far fresher and lighter than the heady orange blossom absolute from the same tree.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note prized for lift and radiance in colognes and florals. It pairs with bergamot, petitgrain, jasmine and musk, and anchors the classic eau de cologne structure. It shines in bright neroli-forward colognes and sun-drenched citrus-floral compositions.
Good to know
The name traces to Marie Anne de La Tremoille, seventeenth-century princess of Nerola near Rome, who scented her gloves and bathwater with the oil and made it fashionable across Europe. Distilling one kilo of neroli takes roughly a tonne of hand-picked blossoms, keeping it among perfumery's costlier naturals.
Champaca
Golden petals of orange, tea and honey
What it is
Champaca comes from Magnolia champaca, once classed as Michelia champaca, a tree native to India, Nepal and Southeast Asia. Its narrow cream-to-orange petals are hand-picked at dawn while intensely fragrant. Solvent extraction yields a deep, resinous absolute; small amounts are also distilled into a precious essential oil.
How it smells
A warm, deep, multi-faceted floral with no real botanical equal. Layers of orange blossom, black tea, dried hay, honey and soft spice weave through a fruity, almost bubblegum sweetness. The red absolute leans tea-like and earthy; the orange type is brighter, opening lush and drying into a smooth ambery floral.
In perfumery
A heart-note floral adding warmth and a tea-like glow to white-floral and oriental bouquets. It pairs with neroli, jasmine, sandalwood, green tea and rice notes. Soliflore compositions can build an entire fragrance around its honeyed, tannic-tea character on a bed of woods.
Good to know
The flowers must be gathered by hand and processed quickly because their fragrance fades fast after picking, and yields are tiny, making the absolute one of the costlier florals. Across South and Southeast Asia the blossoms are strung into temple garlands and worn in women's hair.
Geranium
A rose with green stems and crushed mint
What it is
Perfumery geranium comes from Pelargonium graveolens and related rose-scented pelargoniums, not the true Geranium genus. Grown in Egypt, China and on Reunion (the prized Bourbon type), the leaves and stems are steam-distilled to yield a green, rosy essential oil.
How it smells
Fresh, green and rosy with a crisp, leafy bite and a cool minty lift. Facets of lemon, rose and a powdery sweetness weave through a herbaceous, slightly peppery body. Bourbon geranium leans richer and rosier, drying down soft, green and faintly fruity.
In perfumery
A heart-note workhorse bridging florals and fougeres, adding rosy-green freshness, lift and a herbal facet read as masculine. It pairs with rose, mint, clove, bergamot and vetiver. It anchors crisp masculine florals and the rosy-green heart of many classic and soliflore geranium compositions.
Good to know
Geranium oil is a common, affordable stand-in for parts of costly rose, sharing the molecule citronellol and rounding out rose accords at a fraction of the price. Reunion's Bourbon geranium, once the global benchmark, has grown scarce as cultivation shifted to Egypt and China.
Ylang-Ylang
Sun-warmed tropical bloom, banana-cream and jasmine
What it is
The drooping yellow star-shaped flower of Cananga odorata, a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and now grown mainly in the Comoros, Madagascar and Mayotte. Hand-picked blossoms are steam-distilled for fifteen to twenty hours, the run siphoned off in stages into grades from Extra to Third.
How it smells
Creamy, heady and warm: jasmine-like florals over a soft banana-custard sweetness, threaded with rubber, clove and narcissus. The Extra fraction is bright, fruity and spicy on top; later grades turn deeper, fattier and more medicinal, drying down to a rounded, slightly waxy floral.
In perfumery
A heart-note workhorse adding tropical richness and lift to floral and oriental compositions, bridging jasmine, rose and tuberose while softening citrus tops. It forms part of the floral bouquet of the great aldehydic classics, drives many a legendary floral, and underpins countless solar tiare blends.
Good to know
The name traces to the Tagalog ilang-ilang, commonly glossed as flower of flowers, reaching European perfumery via Spanish. In Indonesia the blossoms are traditionally scattered over the beds of newlyweds. A single tree fruits for decades, with the most fragrant flowers picked at dawn while still cool.
Rose
The queen of flowers, fresh and endlessly deep
What it is
Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery
A heart note of extraordinary range, rose adds body, freshness and natural floral richness, blending with almost anything. It anchors the chypre and floral families and pairs with oud, patchouli and violet. It is the showpiece of countless classic floral and chypre compositions.
Good to know
It takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of hand-picked blossoms to distill a single kilogram of rose otto, which helps explain why the oil can rival precious metals in price. Picking begins before sunrise and runs into the morning, while the flower still holds its oil.
Osmanthus
Apricot and soft leather in a tiny gold flower
What it is
Osmanthus is an absolute from the tiny orange-gold flowers of Osmanthus fragrans, an evergreen shrub native to China. The hand-gathered blossoms are solvent-extracted into a waxy concrete, which is washed with alcohol to yield the absolute. Most production remains in China, with Guilin a noted center.
How it smells
A fruity-floral with vivid fresh apricot and ripe peach, wrapped in tea-like delicacy and a surprising suede or soft-leather undertone. It opens jammy and candied, then dries toward dried fruit and raisin with a faint smoky, animalic warmth lingering beneath the flowers.
In perfumery
A heart note bridging fruit, flower and leather, lending natural fruitiness without added sweeteners. It pairs with black tea, rose, leather and apricot accords. It defines refined fruity-floral and leathery-tea compositions, and colors many soft, powdery floral blends.
Good to know
It takes roughly a tonne of the minuscule flowers to yield a single kilo of absolute, ranking it among perfumery's more precious florals. In China the blossoms have flavored tea and wine for centuries, and the tree carries associations with love and the harvest moon.
Jasmine
The heady white flower at perfumery's beating heart
What it is
Jasmine is the blossom of climbing shrubs in the olive family, chiefly Jasminum grandiflorum, grown in Egypt, India and Morocco, plus Jasminum sambac from India. The fragile flowers are picked by hand from before first light into the morning, solvent-extracted with hexane into a waxy concrete, then washed with ethanol to yield the absolute.
How it smells
A warm, lush white floral, sweet and honeyed with an animalic underside. Sambac leans green, tea-like and luminous; grandiflorum reads fruitier and creamier, with more weight. Both carry a heady, narcotic richness over a green-fruity opening, drying to a soft, skin-warm, faintly mushroomy-musky base.
In perfumery
A heart-note cornerstone, bridging citrus tops and woody bases while lending volume, sensuality and rounded floral body. It pairs with rose, tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and musk. Jasmine anchors many of the great classic florals and can stand alone as a radiant soliflore.
Good to know
Roughly five thousand hand-picked flowers yield a single gram of absolute, ranking natural jasmine among the costliest perfume materials. Part of its depth comes from indole, a molecule that smells frankly animalic, close to decay, when concentrated, yet reads radiant and living at the small percentage the flower naturally holds.
Resins
The amber backbone of incense and warmth
What it is
Resins are aromatic exudates that trees and shrubs secrete to seal wounds in their bark. Tapping Boswellia (frankincense), Commiphora (myrrh) and Styrax (benzoin) yields milky tears that harden in air, while Cistus (labdanum) is boiled or scraped for its leaf gum; all are then worked into resinoids and absolutes by solvent extraction, or into essential oils by distillation.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and balsamic at the core, ranging from frankincense's cool, peppery, lemon-pine smoke to myrrh's bittersweet medicinal earth, benzoin's vanilla-cinnamon caramel and labdanum's leathery, ambered honey. Most open with terpenic brightness, then dry down to a rounded, glowing, sticky-sweet base.
In perfumery
Resins anchor the base, adding warmth, fixation and an incense or oriental character that extends wear. They pair with amber, vanilla, spice, rose and woods. Frankincense drives some of perfumery's great incense compositions, while benzoin and labdanum build the classic sweet ambers.
Good to know
Frankincense and myrrh were once valued like gold, traded along the ancient Incense Route and named among the Magi's gifts. Today wild Boswellia stands are declining from over-tapping and habitat loss, prompting sustainability concern over one of perfumery's oldest materials.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and animal warmth
What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Cade Oil
Black smoke pulled from juniper wood
What it is
A tarry oil from the destructive distillation, or pyrolysis, of the heartwood, roots and branches of prickly juniper, Juniperus oxycedrus, a Mediterranean shrub. The wood is heated in oxygen-starved retorts at roughly 400 to 600 degrees Celsius, charring it and releasing a dark crude tar later rectified into perfumery grade.
How it smells
Dense phenolic smoke laced with tar, creosote and warm leather. It reads sharper and more medicinal than birch tar, drier than vetiver, with charred pinewood, guaiacol and a faint balsamic sweetness underneath. It opens acrid and campfire-like, then settles into smoky, resinous leather as it dries.
In perfumery
A base note used in trace amounts to build smoky leather, fougere, pine and forest accords, and to deepen oakmoss reconstructions. It pairs with labdanum, birch tar, vetiver and patchouli. Alongside birch tar and castoreum, cade is among the materials behind classic leather chypres like Knize Ten.
Good to know
Long sold as juniper tar, the same oil served for centuries as a veterinary and skin remedy, smeared on livestock and rubbed into scalps to treat eczema. Crude grades contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, so modern perfumery relies on carefully rectified, IFRA-restricted material.
Frankincense
Sacred smoke distilled from desert tree tears
What it is
Frankincense, or olibanum, is the dried gum resin of Boswellia trees, with Boswellia sacra of Oman, Yemen and Somalia among the most prized. The bark is scored and weeps a milky sap that hardens over weeks into golden tears, later steam-distilled or solvent-extracted for perfumery.
How it smells
Fresh, resinous and luminous, with a clean coniferous-citrus brightness from alpha-pinene and limonene over a dry, balsamic woody base. It carries a cool, peppery, almost lemony lift, then settles into the warm, dusty incense smoke familiar from churches and temples.
In perfumery
Used in heart and base, it adds a meditative, smoky resinous spine and a soaring transparency. It pairs with myrrh, rose, oud and labdanum, and lifts heavy oriental accords. It centers many incense-built compositions and defines the cathedral-incense theme.
Good to know
Frankincense has been traded for thousands of years and once moved along Arabian incense routes as one of antiquity's costliest imports. Wild Boswellia populations are now declining from over-tapping, drought and grazing, raising real concern over the long-term sustainability of the harvest.
Civet
Animal warmth that makes flowers bloom indecent
What it is
A glandular paste from the African civet, a nocturnal cat-like mammal secreting it from a perineal pouch, historically scraped out by hand and tinctured in alcohol. Modern perfumery instead uses synthetic civetone, a large-ring ketone whose macrocyclic structure was elucidated by Leopold Ruzicka in 1926.
How it smells
Raw and undiluted it is shockingly fecal, pungent and indolic, edged with skatole and sour butter. Diluted to traces it turns warm, honeyed and slightly leathery, with a tobacco hum and skin-like radiance. The shift from repellent to alluring happens entirely through dilution.
In perfumery
A base-note fixative valued for radiance and carnal warmth, lending florals a living, skin-like glow. Classic alongside jasmine and rose in animalic chypres and orientals. Trace civet shaped many vintage aldehydic florals and ambery orientals before synthetic civetone displaced the natural material.
Good to know
Civet farming confines wild-caught animals so the gland can be scraped repeatedly, and it continues on a reduced scale in Ethiopia even though synthetic civetone has displaced the natural material almost everywhere in perfumery. This perfumery civet is not the Asian palm civet behind kopi luwak coffee, a different animal in the same family.
Cedar
Dry sharpened pencils and sun-warmed timber
What it is
Cedar in perfumery comes mainly from the Virginia and Texas "cedars" of the Juniperus genus, with true Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) a smaller second source. Juniper chips and sawmill shavings are steam-distilled into an oil rich in cedrol and cedrene, while Atlas oil runs instead on himachalene sesquiterpenes.
How it smells
Dry, woody and resinous, recalling freshly sharpened pencils and cedar-lined closets. Atlas cedar leans warm, smoky and balsamic; Virginia cedar reads sharper and cleaner. It opens crisp and pencil-like, then settles into a soft, sawdust-warm, faintly sweet timber that holds for hours.
In perfumery
A workhorse heart and base note prized for its smooth woody backbone and fixative power. It anchors chypres, fougeres and modern woods, pairing with vetiver, rose, citrus and amber. Cedar lends a signature plummy-woody core to spiced floral-woods and threads through countless unisex woods.
Good to know
Most perfumery "cedar" is not botanical cedar at all but juniper; true Cedrus and the unrelated Juniperus share a name through scent, not lineage. Cedarwood oil was burned in ancient Egyptian embalming and used to scent tombs, coffins and ships' timbers.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown overwhelmingly in Indonesia, with smaller crops in India and elsewhere in tropical Asia. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Sandalwood
Creamy meditative woods that breathe in slowly
What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.
In perfumery
A base note valued as both scent and fixative, sandalwood lends creaminess, warmth and a meditative softness that binds compositions together. It pairs beautifully with rose, jasmine, vetiver and spice. Many meditative woody and incense fragrances celebrate it at their heart.
Good to know
Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Plantations of Santalum album grown near Kununurra in Western Australia now sustainably recreate the original creamy profile.
Vanilla
The warm sweet heart of comfort itself
What it is
Vanilla comes from the cured seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America, now grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia; the vanilla of Tahiti is a different species, Vanilla x tahitensis. Green pods are picked unripe, then blanched, sweated in the sun and slow-dried over months until they darken and develop their aroma and vanillin.
How it smells
