Squid
The Story
Céline Barel took the squid and went after the water it hides in rather than the animal itself, building on ambergris, sea salt and an ink accord. It is one of the few perfumes to treat ink as a note rather than a metaphor.
Amber
Golden resin glowing warm
A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Balsamic
Warm resin and sweet amber
A warm, syrupy richness of tree resins and golden amber, soft and slightly sweet with a vanillic, almost honeyed glow. It feels enveloping and slow, settling into the skin like candlelight, comforting and faintly sacred.

Incense
Sacred smoke curling from resin and embers
What it is
In perfumery, incense usually means olibanum, the oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia trees from Oman, Somalia and Ethiopia. The bark is slashed, weeps a milky exudate that hardens into amber tears, and these are steam-distilled to an essential oil or solvent-extracted to an absolute; blends often add labdanum and styrax.
How it smells
Cool, dry and resinous, with a sharp citrus-pine lift over smoky, peppery warmth. There is a clean church-air quality: balsamic, slightly soapy, faintly green. It opens bright and turpentine-fresh, then settles into a meditative, ashen-sweet woodiness that lingers close to the skin.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material prized for its contemplative, smoky-resinous character. It cools florals, sharpens woods and lends ritual gravity to oriental and chypre accords. It defines the great church-incense scents and the cold, mineral incense of many a meditative niche composition.
Good to know
Frankincense was among antiquity's costliest imports, carried along ancient Arabian caravan routes to temples across the Mediterranean and beyond. Wild Boswellia stands are now threatened by over-tapping, grazing and climate stress, prompting growing interest in sustainable harvesting and tapping quotas.
Amyl Salicylate
The synthetic breath of clover and orchid
What it is
A wholly synthetic aroma-chemical, the amyl (pentyl) ester of salicylic acid, made industrially by esterifying salicylic acid with amyl alcohol. A colorless to pale liquid, it is one of the salicylate family that became foundational raw materials in perfumery from the late nineteenth century onward.
How it smells
Green, floral and gently sweet with a herbaceous, balsamic warmth. The signature reads as soft clover edging toward orchid, with a faint unripe-banana fruitiness. It is diffusive yet quiet, smoothing and blurring sharper materials rather than dominating a blend, and very long-lasting on the strip.
In perfumery
A heart and fixative material, the classic clover and orchid synthetic. It rounds out carnation, hyacinth and floral accords, softens jasmine and tropical florals, and is almost inevitable in fougere and soapy floral bases, lending fullness, diffusion and a powdery glow.
Good to know
Salicylates like this one bring a creamy, sunscreen-like warmth that shaped the soft floral feel of countless twentieth-century soaps and powders. Amyl salicylate itself carries no IFRA restriction, though salicylates as a group are watched for skin-sensitization, with typical fine-fragrance use around a few percent.
Pink Pepper
Bright rosy berries with a sparkling spice fizz
What it is
Pink pepper is the dried berry of the Peruvian pepper tree Schinus molle, native to the Andes and a member of the cashew family Anacardiaceae, not a true pepper. The rose-colored berries are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted into an oil dominated by alpha-phellandrene, limonene and pinene.
How it smells
Bright, dry and sparkling, more rosy and fruity than black pepper, with only a soft prickle of spice. Crushed-berry, juniper-like resin and faint citrus facets give a fizzy, airy lift. It flashes peppery on top, then fades quickly into a gentle warm spiciness.
In perfumery
A favoured top-to-heart note that adds effervescent spice and a rosy glow without heat or bite. It brightens florals, freshens woods and ambers, and pairs with rose, bergamot and patchouli. Its sparkle opens many modern scents, notably the tea-and-bergamot top of bright fruity-floral bombs.
Good to know
Despite the name, these berries are botanically unrelated to true pepper, Piper nigrum; the resemblance is purely aromatic. As an Anacardiaceae cousin of cashew and mango, Schinus can trigger reactions in people sensitive to that family, so culinary use of the berries is best in moderation.
Ink
Wet writing and cold metal on paper
What it is
Ink is an abstract note with no plant or animal source; nothing is extracted from a bottle of ink. Perfumers build it as an accord, layering synthetic aroma-chemicals with a few naturals to suggest the smell of India ink, iron-gall writing fluid and damp printed paper.
How it smells
The impression is cool, dark and mineral, with a slightly metallic, sooty edge over damp paper. Facets include camphorous smoke, a dry earthiness close to patchouli, and a green-bitter prickle. The overall effect reads cerebral and shadowy rather than sweet or floral.
In perfumery
Ink usually sits as a top-to-heart accent, giving a composition a metallic, intellectual hook and grounding it against woods, leather and earthy patchouli. Good to know
What people read as a metallic smell is not metal at all. Iron is effectively odourless; the scent comes from 1-octen-3-one, a ketone formed when iron reacts with lipids in skin oil, the same molecule behind the tang of blood and old fountain-pen ink on fingers.
Sea Salt
A mineral breath off the open water
What it is
Sea salt is an abstract, conceptual note rather than a distilled material, since sodium chloride itself has no smell. Perfumers build it from aroma-chemicals, chiefly ambergris-like ambroxan with airy musks and a touch of marine molecules, to suggest the briny tang of salt crystals and ocean spray.
How it smells
Clean, dry and mineral, with a faint saline tingle and a cool airy lift. It reads transparent and skin-like rather than fishy, often touched with a sun-warmed, slightly sweet ambergris glow, like wind off the surf catching dried salt on warm forearms and shoulders.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base accord adding a weightless, almost addictive mineral hum and a sense of open air. It pairs with ambergris, musk, sage and aquatic notes to build modern skin and beach scents, defining the salty-skin genre of fragrances.
Good to know
Because real salt is odourless, the salty impression is entirely an illusion assembled by the perfumer's hand. The vogue for a true salt-skin note is recent, riding the ambroxan boom of the twenty-tens that made dry mineral warmth a defining contemporary signature.
Opoponax
Sweet myrrh purring honey, balsam and old wood
What it is
Known as sweet myrrh, opoponax is the oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora species, chiefly Commiphora guidottii, from Somalia and Ethiopia. The tapped bark exudes a sap that hardens into reddish tears, which are steam-distilled to an oil or solvent-extracted to a resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweeter and rounder than true myrrh, with honeyed, balsamic warmth and a faint effervescent lift on opening. Beneath runs a dusty, slightly animalic, mushroom-tinged depth and dry old-wood character. Less medicinal and sharp than myrrh, closer to benzoin but drier and more powdery.
In perfumery
A base note and soft fixative giving amber accords their honeyed, balsamic glow, it can also lend a sweet lift higher in a chypre. Pairs with labdanum, vanilla, incense and rose. It is a signature thread through classic orientals and powdery amber compositions.
Good to know
The trade name is loosely applied. Historical opoponax came from an unrelated parsley-family plant, Opopanax chironium of the Mediterranean, whereas today's perfumery material is almost always a Commiphora resin, so the single word can name two botanically distinct things.
Ambergris
Sea-aged whale gold breathing warm salt air
What it is
Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the gut of the sperm whale, thought to coat the indigestible squid beaks it swallows. Produced by perhaps one percent of whales, it is expelled and drifts for years at sea, oxidizing under sun and salt before washing ashore as lumps.
How it smells
Fresh ambergris is fecal and marine; aged, it turns sweet, animalic and softly mineral. The scent is warm and skin-like, with tobacco, dry seaweed, old wood and a salty, faintly sweet musk. It reads less as a sharp odor than as warmth, diffusion and breath.
In perfumery
A prized base note and fixative, it lends warmth, diffusion and a luminous skin effect while slowing evaporation of lighter materials. Its bulk constituent is the near-odorless triterpene ambrein, whose oxidation products ambroxide and ambrinol carry the scent. Most fragrances now use synthetics like Ambroxan; rare real tinctures appear in bespoke work and vintage chypre and oriental compositions.
Good to know
Though salvageable in some countries, ambergris is illegal to collect, possess or sell in the United States, protected as a sperm-whale product under marine-mammal and endangered-species law; India bans possession and sale as well, while Australia restricts only its commercial import and export. Single boulder-sized finds have sold elsewhere for hundreds of thousands of dollars, earning the nickname floating gold.
Benzoin
Warm vanilla balsam wept from a tapped tree
What it is
Benzoin is a balsamic resin from Styrax trees of Southeast Asia. Siam benzoin comes from Styrax tonkinensis (Laos, Vietnam), Sumatra benzoin from Styrax benzoin (Indonesia). Incisions in the bark make the tree exude a gum that hardens over months into reddish tears, processed into resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and balsamic with a pronounced vanilla character and powdery, ambery, faintly cinnamic facets. Siam is rounder and more vanillic; Sumatra is smokier with a cinnamon-styrax edge. It opens soft and creamy, then dries into a cozy, resinous, almost caramelized sweetness.
In perfumery
A warm base note and gentle fixative lending sweetness, body and a vanillic glow to amber accords. It blends with labdanum, vanilla, tonka and incense, smoothing orientals and gourmands. Benzoin is a defining warmth in golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
Benzoin gave its name to benzoic acid and, through it, to the chemical term benzene. The word itself traces to the Arabic luban jawi, "frankincense of Java." The resin never flows on its own; every tear is the tree healing an incision deliberately cut into its bark.
Musk
One word for two entirely different materials
What it is
Musk names two different materials. Historically it was the dried glandular secretion of the male musk deer, genus Moschus, tinctured slowly in alcohol. Since all musk deer came under CITES protection in 1979, the word has almost always meant synthetic musk, families of lab molecules built to carry that warmth without the animal.
How it smells
Raw deer musk is animalic, urinous and barnyard, turning sweet, warm and radiantly skin-like once diluted to a whisper. Synthetic musks read cleaner: Galaxolide sweet and floral-woody, Habanolide metallic like hot-ironed linen, ethylene brassylate soft and powdery. Together they suggest fresh cotton and clean skin rather than fur.
In perfumery
Musk is the quiet backbone of a composition, a fixative that lends sillage, longevity and a second-skin glow. Synthetics divide into nitro, polycyclic and macrocyclic families, the old nitro musks largely restricted over persistence and toxicity concerns, the biodegradable macrocyclics favoured since. Genuine deer musk survives only in a handful of artisanal tinctures.
Good to know
A label that says only musk does not declare which of the two it holds, though deer musk is restricted and costly enough to appear mainly in small artisanal work. Specific anosmia complicates the reading further: many people cannot smell Galaxolide at all, so one wearer finds a scent radiant and another finds almost nothing.
Fragrance Character
Incense and amyl salicylate frame the central note of raw ink with a sharp, faintly antiseptic, mineral clarity. Sea salt keeps the heart cool and wet while opoponax begins pulling everything toward warmth. On the drydown, benzoin and ambergris take over completely, the oceanic edge softened into a dense, animalic musk that sits close to skin.

Zoologist does not make perfumes so much as it makes creatures. Each release is a portrait of a single animal, handed to an independent perfumer and told to be fearless, and the results tend to divide a room in the best way.
