Interlude 53
The Story
Interlude 53 is 53 percent pure perfume, and the number is the whole point of the release. Amouage built the Exceptional Extraits by returning to each original perfumer and ageing the concentrate for months at its manufacture, which on a composition already known for its smoke and resin produces something closer to solid than to liquid.
Amber
Golden resin glowing warm
A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Smoky
Charred wood and rising embers
The dry, charred scent of burning wood, smoldering incense, and lingering ash, sometimes tarry, sometimes wispy and gray. It feels brooding and atmospheric, conjuring a dying fire and a cool current of air carrying its last breath.
Balsamic

Oregano
Sun-baked hillside herb, pungent and warm-blooded
What it is
A perennial herb (Origanum vulgare and Origanum onites) of the mint family, native to Mediterranean and western Asian hillsides. The dried flowering tops and leaves are steam-distilled into an essential oil dominated by the phenols carvacrol and thymol, which carry most of the aroma.
How it smells
Sharp, hot and herbal, with a dry medicinal bite from carvacrol and a peppery, almost camphorous edge. Beneath the green pungency sits a warm, slightly leathery facet recalling thyme and savory. It reads spicy and rustic rather than soft, fading toward a dry mineral herbaceousness.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart accent used in trace amounts, lending fougere and aromatic-spicy compositions a rugged, virile freshness alongside thyme, lavender, sage and clary. Its phenolic heat sharpens woody and leather bases. It surfaces in barbershop and Mediterranean herbal blends rather than as a headline note.
Good to know
Carvacrol, oregano's signature molecule, is a potent antimicrobial, and the oil was long valued more as a preservative and disinfectant than a perfume material. Its skin-sensitizing phenols mean it is used in tiny, regulated doses, which keeps it scarce in fine fragrance.
Pimento
Clove and pepper packed into one berry
What it is
Pimento is allspice, the dried unripe berry of Pimenta dioica, an evergreen tree native to the Caribbean and Central America and grown notably in Jamaica. The berries, and sometimes the leaves, are steam-distilled into an essential oil rich in eugenol, the compound that gives clove its bite.
How it smells
A warm, spicy aroma reading like clove, cinnamon and black pepper combined, hence the name allspice. It opens fresh and peppery with a mild camphor lift, then settles into a sweet, woody, balsamic body with faint tea-like and nutmeg undertones.
In perfumery
A spicy heart-note modifier giving heat, lift and a warm fougere or oriental glow, frequent in masculine blends. It pairs with carnation, bay, lavender, tobacco and woods. It animates many spiced classics and barbershop fougeres alongside clove and cinnamon.
Good to know
English colonists coined the name allspice around 1621 because one berry seemed to hold the flavours of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg at once. Its high eugenol content is the limiting factor, since IFRA restricts eugenol itself, which keeps pimento oil to small, careful doses.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.
Good to know
Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. IFRA caps how much expressed bergamot oil a leave-on product may carry, so perfumers either dose within that limit or reach for a furocoumarin-free (FCF) grade.
Incense
Sacred smoke curling from resin and embers
What it is
In perfumery, incense usually means olibanum, the oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia trees from Oman, Somalia and Ethiopia. The bark is slashed, weeps a milky exudate that hardens into amber tears, and these are steam-distilled to an essential oil or solvent-extracted to an absolute; blends often add labdanum and styrax.
How it smells
Cool, dry and resinous, with a sharp citrus-pine lift over smoky, peppery warmth. There is a clean church-air quality: balsamic, slightly soapy, faintly green. It opens bright and turpentine-fresh, then settles into a meditative, ashen-sweet woodiness that lingers close to the skin.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material prized for its contemplative, smoky-resinous character. It cools florals, sharpens woods and lends ritual gravity to oriental and chypre accords. It defines the great church-incense scents and the cold, mineral incense of many a meditative niche composition.
Good to know
Frankincense was among antiquity's costliest imports, carried along ancient Arabian caravan routes to temples across the Mediterranean and beyond. Wild Boswellia stands are now threatened by over-tapping, grazing and climate stress, prompting growing interest in sustainable harvesting and tapping quotas.
Amber
A warm resinous glow built, not harvested
What it is
Amber is not one ingredient but a perfumer's accord, most often blending labdanum (a sticky resin from the Mediterranean rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer), benzoin and vanilla, sometimes with tonka or Peru balsam. Despite the name, it has no link to fossilized tree amber, which stays odorless on skin.
How it smells
Warm, soft and balsamic, a powdery sweetness sitting over dry resin. It opens honeyed and faintly animalic from labdanum, then settles into rounded golden warmth recalling beeswax, tobacco and worn leather, threaded with a quiet smoky, incense-like undertone that lingers close to the skin.
In perfumery
A base note prized for warmth, depth and long persistence, anchoring oriental and amber compositions. It pairs naturally with vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood and spices. The sweet vanilla-amber template is a perfumery classic, while drier, resin-forward and herbal readings show its other face.
Good to know
The word once meant ambergris, the waxy intestinal secretion of sperm whales, fueling centuries of confusion among three unrelated things: fossil tree amber, whale ambergris and the resin accord. Modern amber bases are wholly plant and synthetic, leaning on molecules like Ambroxan rather than any animal source.
Opoponax
Sweet myrrh purring honey, balsam and old wood
What it is
Known as sweet myrrh, opoponax is the oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora species, chiefly Commiphora guidottii, from Somalia and Ethiopia. The tapped bark exudes a sap that hardens into reddish tears, which are steam-distilled to an oil or solvent-extracted to a resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweeter and rounder than true myrrh, with honeyed, balsamic warmth and a faint effervescent lift on opening. Beneath runs a dusty, slightly animalic, mushroom-tinged depth and dry old-wood character. Less medicinal and sharp than myrrh, closer to benzoin but drier and more powdery.
In perfumery
A base note and soft fixative giving amber accords their honeyed, balsamic glow, it can also lend a sweet lift higher in a chypre. Pairs with labdanum, vanilla, incense and rose. It is a signature thread through classic orientals and powdery amber compositions.
Good to know
The trade name is loosely applied. Historical opoponax came from an unrelated parsley-family plant, Opopanax chironium of the Mediterranean, whereas today's perfumery material is almost always a Commiphora resin, so the single word can name two botanically distinct things.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
In perfumery
A foundational base note and the natural backbone of most amber accords, usually built with vanilla and benzoin. A strong fixative, it deepens chypres, orientals and leathers and pairs with rose, oakmoss and incense. It underpins many golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
In antiquity labdanum was combed from the matted beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had browsed through cistus thickets, then raked off with a thong-fringed tool called a ladanisterion. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials, predating distillation by millennia.
Smoke
Drifting ash, embers and distant bonfire
What it is
Smoke is an abstract, evocative note rather than a single ingredient, built from materials that carry burnt and charred facets. Perfumers construct it from birch tar distilled from smoldering bark, guaiacwood, cade oil, lapsang souchong tea, vetiver and phenolic aroma-chemicals such as guaiacol that mimic combustion.
How it smells
Dry, charred and airy, like cooled embers, woodsmoke and singed paper drifting from a distant fire. It can lean tarry and leathery, incense-like and resinous, or campfire-sweet. It opens acrid and ashen, then settles into a warm, smoldering dryness that clings like scent on a wool coat.
In perfumery
Usually a base or heart effect lending depth, edge and a brooding atmosphere. It pairs with leather, incense, oud, vetiver and dry woods in dark, moody compositions. It haunts many smoky leather and incense scents.
Good to know
Birch tar, the most authentic smoke and leather material, is tightly restricted by IFRA because crude grades carry carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Modern perfumers rely on vacuum-rectified, low-PAH birch tar and synthetic phenols to evoke the same primal campfire effect within safety limits.
Agarwood
The wounded heartwood where oud begins
What it is
Agarwood is the dark, resin-saturated heartwood an Aquilaria tree lays down after a wound sets off its defences, with fungi and other stresses deepening the response. Healthy wood is pale and odourless; the defensive resin transforms it into a dense, fragrant material. Distilled or burned, that resin becomes oud. The two words name one thing at different stages.
How it smells
As raw chips on a charcoal burner, agarwood gives a warm, sweet, woody smoke laced with resin, spice and a faint animal-balsamic depth. Higher grades sink toward honeyed incense and cooling camphor; lower or younger wood smells greener, sharper and more fermented, closer to damp earth.
In perfumery
Most agarwood is consumed as wood rather than perfume, burned in the bakhoor and incense traditions of the Gulf, India, Japan and China. The finest chips fetch staggering prices, and CITES Appendix II covers every Aquilaria species, planted as well as wild, so much of today's supply comes from inoculated plantation trees moving under permit.
Good to know
Grade tracks resin density: the heaviest, darkest pieces sink in water and are the most prized, the reason East Asian names for it mean sinking incense. The rarest grade of all, kyara or kinam, is sweeter and cooler than ordinary agarwood and treated as almost sacred. Aquilaria is CITES Appendix II, so the trade is regulated rather than closed: Annotation 14 exempts finished products packaged and ready for retail trade, but names wood chips, beads and carvings out of that exemption.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and animal warmth
What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown overwhelmingly in Indonesia, with smaller crops in India and elsewhere in tropical Asia. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Sandalwood
Creamy meditative woods that breathe in slowly
What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.
In perfumery
A base note valued as both scent and fixative, sandalwood lends creaminess, warmth and a meditative softness that binds compositions together. It pairs beautifully with rose, jasmine, vetiver and spice. Many meditative woody and incense fragrances celebrate it at their heart.
Good to know
Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Plantations of Santalum album grown near Kununurra in Western Australia now sustainably recreate the original creamy profile.

Longevity
how long it stays on skin

Amouage does not do quiet. Every bottle feels built for a room you have to earn your way into, all high ceilings, incense in the air and light coming through something precious. The house pours frankincense, rose and oud like it has an endless supply, and the results wear big and last long without ever tipping into loud for its own sake.
