The Story
The number is the concentration: Reflection 45 is 45 percent pure perfume, against roughly 15 to 20 for a standard eau de parfum. It is part of the Exceptional Extraits, where Amouage returned to the original perfumer of each classic and aged the result for months at its manufacture in Oman, which is what gives the aromatic-floral its unusual density.

Incisions in the bark make the tree exude a gum that hardens over months into reddish tears, processed into resinoid and absolute.

Neroli
Bittersweet orange blossom distilled into white light
What it is
Neroli is the steam-distilled essential oil of the fresh white flowers of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium subspecies amara, also called bigarade or Seville orange. Blossoms are hand-picked at dawn and distilled the same day. Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt are the major sources.
How it smells
Bright, clean and floral with a green, faintly bitter edge and a honeyed metallic shimmer often likened to freshly ironed linen. It opens crisp and citrus-cool, then settles into soft, waxy petal warmth, far fresher and lighter than the heady orange blossom absolute from the same tree.

The name traces to Marie Anne de La Tremoille, seventeenth-century princess of Nerola near Rome, who scented her gloves and bathwater with the oil and made it fashionable across Europe. Distilling one kilo of neroli takes roughly a tonne of hand-picked blossoms, keeping it among perfumery's costlier naturals.
Orris
Powdered violet rooted in patient buried earth
What it is
Orris is the aroma material from the rhizome of iris flowers, chiefly Iris pallida grown in the hills of Tuscany. The roots are harvested, dried and aged three to six years so slow oxidation develops the irones, then ground and steam-distilled into a waxy, ivory orris butter.

Angelica

An essential oil from Angelica archangelica, a tall white-flowered umbellifer grown in northern Europe, notably France, Belgium and Iceland. The most valued oil is steam-distilled from the aged dried roots; a brighter, peppery oil is distilled from the seeds. Both are used in fine perfumery.

The root oil is earthy, musky and warm, with a green, peppery, slightly animalic depth recalling natural musk and dry soil. The seed oil is fresher, more herbaceous and spicy, with a gin-like lift. Over time the root note grows darker, stronger and more radiant, never sweet.

Vanilla

Cedarwood

What it is
An essential oil steam-distilled from the wood, shavings and sawdust of several conifers. Main sources are Virginia cedar and Texas cedar, both junipers, plus the true Atlas and Himalayan cedars of the Cedrus genus. The fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood and sawmill byproduct.

Fresh, resinous and luminous, with a clean coniferous-citrus brightness from alpha-pinene and limonene over a dry, balsamic woody base. It carries a cool, peppery, almost lemony lift, then settles into the warm, dusty incense smoke familiar from churches and temples.

Opoponax
Sweet myrrh purring honey, balsam and old wood
What it is
Known as sweet myrrh, opoponax is the oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora species, chiefly Commiphora guidottii, from Somalia and Ethiopia. The tapped bark exudes a sap that hardens into reddish tears, which are steam-distilled to an oil or solvent-extracted to a resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweeter and rounder than true myrrh, with honeyed, balsamic warmth and a faint effervescent lift on opening. Beneath runs a dusty, slightly animalic, mushroom-tinged depth and dry old-wood character. Less medicinal and sharp than myrrh, closer to benzoin but drier and more powdery.

The trade name is loosely applied. Historical opoponax came from an unrelated parsley-family plant, Opopanax chironium of the Mediterranean, whereas today's perfumery material is almost always a Commiphora resin, so the single word can name two botanically distinct things.

Perfumer
Lucas Sieuzac comes from a family of French perfumers and joined Eurofragance as senior fine fragrance perfumer in 2019, after Florasynth, Créations Aromatiques, Symrise and Cosmo International. He composed Amouage Reflection Man, Amouage Jubilation 25 Woman and Comme des Garçons Dot, and co-signed Givenchy Play and Azzaro Now Man.
