Burnt almond cookie, gunpowder and hot metal: an extrait built from what astronauts said space smells like.

Caeleste is a Romanian house naming its fragrances for the ranks of the angelic hierarchy, a different nose for each rank. It opened in 2024 with three extraits conceived together as the third order and has since moved up a sphere with Virtues. Principalities, by David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi of Toskovat', won the 2025 Art and Olfaction Newcomer Award.

The angelic hierarchy, one perfumer per rank

01

A creative director and four noses

Caeleste is the project of Ștefan Răduț, its creative director, run through Corpus Caeleste, a company registered in Bucharest in 2022. Răduț sets the idea and brings a different perfumer to each angelic rank: Chris Maurice composed Caeleste Guardian Angel, Cristiano Canali Caeleste Archangels, David-Lev Jipa-Slivinschi of Toskovat' Caeleste Principalities and Michael Nordstrand Caeleste Virtues. In 2025 Principalities won the Newcomer Award at the Art and Olfaction Awards, credited to Jipa-Slivinschi for Răduț.

02

Nine ranks in three orders

The frame is the hierarchy of angels: nine ranks in three orders, from Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones at the top to Principalities, Archangels and Guardian Angels nearest the earth. Caeleste opened in 2024 with that lowest order, then climbed into the second with Virtues. Canali split Archangels between Michael and Gabriel: lily and white flowers for one, burnt resins and myrrh for the other. Jipa-Slivinschi, steered only towards outer space, worked under the code name Project Quasar and built from astronaut accounts of burnt almond cookie, metallic minerality and gunpowder.

03

Pyrazines, collage and sacred geometry

All four Caeleste perfumes are 30 ml extraits, from 20 per cent oil in Archangels to 30 per cent in Guardian Angel. Principalities rests on Iso E Super and Hedione, pushed off balance by overdoses of pyrazines and rose oxide. Virtues is laid out as seven virtues, from cacao absolute and honey for Fortitude to vanilla and labdanum for Charity. No dyes go in, so the colour of the juice can vary. Aleksandar Stoicovici makes the artwork as analogue collage, and Anne-Marie JP based the object design on sacred geometry.
