Boadicea the Victorious builds rich, resolutely British compositions and houses them in round glass flasks dressed with a handcrafted pewter shield in Celtic knotwork. The juice runs warm and generous, oud and amber and polished fruit, the sort of thing that reads as ceremonial without ever feeling costume.

A hair stylist names a queen

Michael Boadi made his name as a hair stylist to models and stars before he turned to perfume. He named his house after Boadicea, queen of the Iceni, who led a revolt against Roman rule in Britain. Boadicea the Victorious opened in 2008 as a worldwide exclusive in the Black Hall perfumery at Harrods, and today has its own room in the store's Salon de Parfum on the sixth floor.

Warrior names, oud at the core

The fragrances carry names such as Nemer, Opal, Ardent and Oud Sapphire, and they are built to leave a strong trail. Oud has been a signature since the Harrods launch, set against saffron, rose, rum, coffee or leather, and the house keeps its demand on natural oud and Mysore sandalwood in check. Bodacious is an after-dark floral: cherry, almond, cognac and clove open onto jasmine sambac, Moroccan rose and heliotrope, over sandalwood, tobacco, amber, tonka and vanilla.

Pewter shields, made in Britain

The perfumes are made in the United Kingdom, and so is every part of the bottle, from cap to base. The glass takes a round, flask-like shape crowned with the Boadicea crest and carries a handcrafted pewter shield with Celtic knotwork and silver and gold detailing. The Celtic love knot is the house emblem. Private commissions can have the shield engraved with names, dates or a family crest. Christian Provenzano and Kamila Lelakova are among the perfumers who compose for the house.
