A painter who smells colour
Stéphane Humbert Lucas trained as a painter in the south of France under a Flemish master, working in tempera, and found there that he links every colour to a smell. He learned perfume from a mentor, not a school. Around 2003 he started Nez à Nez, first selling its scents at shows of his paintings, with the perfumer Henri Sorsana as his guide, and he was also the in-house nose for SoOud. In 2012 he launched the house under his own name and showed it at Esxence in 2013.

Sevens, the Orient and serpents
The 777 collection grew out of his travels in the Middle East, which he sees as the cradle of the world, and its triple seven stands for luck, protection and peace. Khol de Bahrein, Une Nuit à Doha, Soleil de Jeddah and Black Gemstone belong to it. In 2022 he opened the Serpent collection, built on snake legends from Mexico to China, and Stéphane Humbert Lucas God of Fire sits there. It takes the Aztec fire god Xiuhtecuhtli: mango, lemon, pink berries and ginger, then blue coumarin and jasmine, then oud, nagarmotha, musk and amber.

Honeycomb caps and faceted stones
Lucas treats the bottle as part of the work. At Nez à Nez he handled the brand, the scent, the box and the flacon himself, while formulators at partner labs in Chicago and at Expressions Parfumées built accords to his direction. The 777 flacons stand tall, with a honeycombed metal cap rising into a vaulted dome and a faceted stone on top. The company, S.H.L, is registered on rue de Ponthieu in Paris, and the perfumes are sold at Printemps, Harrods and independent perfumeries.
