Thameen names much of its range after famous jewels and builds each one to match, precise, polished and rich without being heavy handed. The compositions are quieter than most of the London houses, which makes them easier to wear daily than their price suggests.

Rose oils and a father's jewels

Basel Binjabr built his career in investment, not perfume. As a boy he went with his father to attar sellers, where the older man chose rose oils and called his own blends his precious jewels. After his father died, Binjabr founded Thameen in 2013 and launched it in London rather than Saudi Arabia, opening at Selfridges. In 2022 Christopher Chong, creative director of Amouage for fifteen years, joined as brand and artistic director.

Each scent a famous stone

Thameen means precious in Arabic, and the house took famous gems as its subjects: Thameen Peacock Throne, Moon of Baroda, Royal Sapphire and Blue Heart, after the diamond of that name. Thameen Rivière is named after the necklace of graduated stones and runs from saffron and lemon blossom through Turkish rose and patchouli to leather, amber and an oud accord. Under Chong the house added Britologne, a British take on cologne, with Bold As Love, Chords, Centre Stage and Bohemian Infusion.

Extraits at full strength

Every Thameen perfume is an extrait de parfum at 35 per cent. Materials come with named origins: Haitian vetiver, Madagascar vanilla, Omani frankincense. The first five scents came from a German perfumery company, and Binjabr kept their formulas exactly as they were. Newer work is composed with Bruno Jovanovic and Nathalie Lorson. The signature bottle is sapphire blue, as on Blue Heart, which reached travel retail in 2022.
