Bath oils on a London stove

Jo Malone was a London facialist in her twenties when she began mixing bath oils on her stove as gifts for clients. The first, nutmeg and ginger, drew an order for 100 bottles from one of them. Her husband Gary Willcox left his job as a surveyor to help bottle and sell, and the couple opened a store on Walton Street in October 1994. Estée Lauder bought the company in 1999; Malone stayed as creative director until 2006. Céline Roux now leads fragrance as global head.

Built to be combined

The house style is a single clear idea per bottle, light enough to wear on its own and simple enough to stack. Layering two or more scents is part of the design, with around 400 combinations suggested across the range. The Cologne Intense line began with Oud & Bergamot, which took its cue from the Middle East. Myrrh & Tonka joined it in January 2017, first in travel retail. Mathilde Bijaoui set lavender over Namibian omumbiri myrrh, then tonka with almond and vanilla underneath.

Made in Petersfield

Much of the range is made in England. Whitman, an Estée Lauder plant in Petersfield, Hampshire, opened in 1966 and turns out fragrance for the brand alongside Clinique and La Mer. The candles are made in Britain too, and in 2026 the group named the UK its main base for candles across its prestige brands. The omumbiri resin in Myrrh & Tonka is harvested by hand from the myrrh tree in Namibia. In 2023 the Cologne Intense bottles were redesigned in deep colours taken from precious stones.
