Fragrance Du Bois grows and distils its own agarwood, then builds French style compositions around it. The oud reads clean and sweet rather than barnyard, which makes it an easier way into the material than most artisanal distillations, and the line runs from bright and fresh to properly dark.

It began at a Thai distillery

Fragrance Du Bois started as an oud oil producer. From June 2010 it refined agarwood at a distillery in Nakhon Nayok, in the Khao Yai area about 120 km from Bangkok, using its own plantation and others in Thailand's north-east, with offices in Hong Kong and Singapore. It was part of the Asia Plantation Capital group, which stayed on as founding partner and plantation manager when the name became a perfume house with a Paris head office on rue Saint-Honoré.

Oud first, then everything else

Oud anchors the line, set against fruit, flowers and leather in a modern French style. The house works with outside perfumers, among them Guillaume Flavigny, Olivier Pescheux, Nathalie Cetto, François Merle-Baudoin and Christian Provenzano. Rude Oud, made for Harrods and credited to Provenzano, opens on saffron and raspberry, turns to rose and leather, and settles on oud and amber. Rude Oud Elixir, composed by Shadi Samra, is the third release in that Harrods series.

Composed in Paris, made in Grasse

The perfumes are composed in Paris and manufactured in Grasse, and the operating company sits on Regent Street in London. In its plantation years the house sold CITES-certified oud; every Aquilaria species has been listed under that convention since 2004. It also pledged two trees, one teak and one Aquilaria, planted in Asia for each 50 or 100 ml bottle sold. The bottles are built for show: lacquered finishes, gilded caps and crystal details.
