Who Owns the Still: Five Artisan Perfume Houses Compared

A comparative look at five artisan houses, built on who owns a still, what each house can legally buy, and what our own sillage and longevity data says about rarity versus volume.

One of these houses opens on fermented apple ice. Another goes feral, castoreum and civet under Taif rose. Both get filed under indie, and the word explains none of it.

We carry twenty-nine products across Ensar Oud, Areej Le Doré, Bortnikoff, Lost Tribe and Folkwinds. One fact sorts the shelf.

Who owns the still

Ensar Oud, Areej Le Doré and Bortnikoff distil their own agarwood. Lost Tribe and Folkwinds compose from bought oils.

The still decides how much oil exists, what grade it is and what it costs. The buyer decides none of that. Most of the price gap lives there.

Read the fourth column. The two buying houses list agarwood in all ten of their products. Areej Le Doré, whose founder claims nearly a hundred agarwood distillations of his own, lists it in none of the three we carry. Owning the still buys the right not to use it.

Grades you cannot look up

The house signs only as Ensar and names his own grades. Purple Rain: Überblau puts Nha Trang Kinam next to King Super Oud. Kyara de Kalbar stacks Brunei, Kyara and Malayan oud under crushed black grape. The names hold because one man controls both ends.

Nine products and not one opens bright: blueberry and cherry in Purple Rain, apricot and peach in Musk Yusuf. Bruised fruit, then the cellar.

The quietest bottle here is his too: Borneo Trifecta, four to six hours at Moderate.

One shed, two answers

Dmitry Bortnikoff co-founded the Feel-Oud distillery in 2013, and third-party listings put Russian Adam of Areej Le Doré on the same brand. One still, two houses, opposite directions.

Adam claims a hundred distillations he declines to use. War and Peace 2 is castoreum, civet, ambergris and oakmoss under Taif rose, a drydown our copy calls ancient, skin-close and quietly feral. Starts warm, ends animal.

Bortnikoff opens bright, at 95 to 100 percent natural, bergamot topping all three. Oud Maximus walks Indian oud, birch tar, civet and deer musk under three roses. Musk Cologne is just tangerine, lemon and bergamot over natural musk. Same shed, split on the first thirty seconds.

Lost Tribe buys at the top. Prince of Persia reaches the distillers' shelf with Thai Kinam Oud. Money gets the oil, never certainty that the next run is the same wood. Five of six open on citrus, and Freddy runs thirteen top notes, apple pie through pinyon pine resin.

Folkwinds forages the American northeast instead. Crimson and Clover is American oak, Vermont honey and red spruce over imported Thai and Vietnamese oud, and not one of the four opens on citrus. If it smells like weather rather than fruit, it is Folkwinds.

Loud or long, pick one

Our sillage data covers twenty-five of these products. Only three reach Enormous: Vanilla Waves V2 Extra Musk, War and Peace 2 and Jasper No Kodo 2. Ensar and Bortnikoff get there with nothing. Longevity runs the other way: seven products in the top 10 to 12 hour band, four of them Ensar.

To be noticed, buy from the composers. To still be wearing it at midnight, buy from the distillers.

Two footnotes. Every naturals percentage and distillation count above is the house's own account, unaudited. And almost nobody publishes a batch size, so a full bottle is a bet on a run you have never smelled.

The exception is Midwinter Storm, a stated 50 bottles of fermented ice cider and rye over frozen white spruce. Meet it as a decant before you bet on it.
