The Longest-Lasting Niche Fragrances We've Tested

Longevity stops being useful the moment it is true. Thirty fragrances here logged 10 to 12 hours in our wear-tests, the same band, all of them. Louis Vuitton Ombre Nomade. Orto Parisi Risvelium. Zoologist Tyrannosaurus Rex. Identical hours, and one of them opens on grapefruit. The hours cannot sort this list. Sillage can.

Five that hold, and the material doing it

One material each, one number, and the situation where it fails.

Ombre Nomade runs on benzoin, a balsam tapped by hand from Styrax trees, which is what keeps the oud sweet instead of medicinal. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Enormous. It fails in heat, where the resin turns syrupy, and at a desk, because it arrives before you do. From $14 (2 ml decant).

Grapefruit and blackcurrant over ambroxan, a molecule heavy enough that Risvelium still logged 10 to 12 hours, Enormous, when nothing this bright normally survives lunch. The failure is documented, not measured by us: partial anosmia to ambroxan is common, so a few wearers will swear it died by hour two while the whole room still smells it. From $16 (2 ml decant).

Black Afgano is built on gurjan balsam, an oleoresin thick enough to move like tar. It gets the dedicated glassware here, with the ouds and the heavy resins, because anything poured after it would carry it. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Enormous. One dab is the dose. Sprayed, it is antisocial. From $20 (2 ml decant).

Ganymede is Akigalawood, a captive that Givaudan makes by fermenting patchouli oil with an enzyme: one supplier, one price, no corner-cutting reformulation. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Enormous, though the first hour reads restrained, inferred from the tier, not separately measured. That restraint is the failure. It is the easiest scent on this page to over-spray. From $13 (2 ml decant).

Oud Satin Mood leans on Turkish rose, thousands of kilos of petals picked before sunrise for one kilo of oil. Logged at 10 to 12 hours, Enormous. The sweetest thing here, the priciest of these five per millilitre, and in a hot car it reads as jam. From $22 (2 ml decant).

Where you spray moves the number

Dry skin sheds fragrance fast; moisturise first with anything unscented and the same sprays buy back an hour. Fabric holds longer still, one spray into a jacket lining can be readable the next day. And an extrait does not automatically beat a dense eau de parfum. More in our guide to concentrations.

The arithmetic

Ombre Nomade is $583 a bottle. The 2 ml decant is $14, roughly twenty sprays, four full days of what this page is about. Forty-one of those cost what the one bottle costs.

What the arithmetic cannot settle is whether your skin holds it ten hours or six. Chemistry, climate and whether you moisturised move that number more than the label does. That is the whole argument for a 2 ml. All thirty as single decants.
