The Story
Hypnotizing Fire is the ember at the centre of the fire element, one of the five the house assigns its scents according to feng shui. Guillaume Flavigny struck clove and pimento berry against praliné and Bulgarian rose over a vanilla and oud base.
Warm Spicy
Glowing embers of the spice drawer
The rounded heat of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, dry and slightly resinous, like a baking pantry rather than a sharp kitchen. It creates a flushed, enveloping warmth that feels intimate and cool-weather, hugging the skin from within.
Vanilla
Creamy bean steeped in warmth
The soft, custardy sweetness of cured vanilla pods, rich and balsamic with a faint boozy, smoky depth beneath the cream. It feels comforting and skin-warm, a tender glow that smooths and rounds everything it touches.
Amber
Golden resin glowing warm
A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark cocoa
A deep, earthy darkness that smells of damp soil, dry wood, and a faint bitter-sweet cocoa, with a cool, almost camphorous edge. It feels grounding and a little mysterious, lending weight and shadow to whatever it touches.
Balsamic
Warm resin and sweet amber
A warm, syrupy richness of tree resins and golden amber, soft and slightly sweet with a vanillic, almost honeyed glow. It feels enveloping and slow, settling into the skin like candlelight, comforting and faintly sacred.
Sweet
Edible warmth on the skin
A rounded, sugary character that suggests caramel, honey, or spun candy without any single one dominating. It reads as comforting and indulgent, the gourmand pull that makes a fragrance feel soft, inviting, and almost good enough to taste.
Pimento
Clove and pepper packed into one berry
What it is
Pimento is allspice, the dried unripe berry of Pimenta dioica, an evergreen tree native to the Caribbean and Central America and grown notably in Jamaica. The berries, and sometimes the leaves, are steam-distilled into an essential oil rich in eugenol, the compound that gives clove its bite.
How it smells
A warm, spicy aroma reading like clove, cinnamon and black pepper combined, hence the name allspice. It opens fresh and peppery with a mild camphor lift, then settles into a sweet, woody, balsamic body with faint tea-like and nutmeg undertones.
In perfumery
A spicy heart-note modifier giving heat, lift and a warm fougere or oriental glow, frequent in masculine blends. It pairs with carnation, bay, lavender, tobacco and woods. It animates many spiced classics and barbershop fougeres alongside clove and cinnamon.
Good to know
English colonists coined the name allspice around 1621 because one berry seemed to hold the flavours of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg at once. Its high eugenol content is the limiting factor, since IFRA restricts eugenol itself, which keeps pimento oil to small, careful doses.
Cloves
Warm pinpricks of dark, resinous spice
What it is
The dried unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree native to Indonesia's Maluku Islands and now grown in Madagascar, Zanzibar and Sri Lanka. Buds are picked before they bloom, sun-dried to deep brown, then steam-distilled into clove bud oil rich in eugenol.
How it smells
Hot, sweet and woody-spicy, with a sharp medicinal bite and a faint floral roundness. The top is almost peppery and numbing, recalling dental antiseptic, before drying into a warm, balsamic, slightly fruity base. Eugenol gives that signature tingling, carnation-like edge.
In perfumery
A heart and base accent adding warmth, spice and an old-fashioned carnation effect, paired with rose, ylang, vanilla and ambery resins. Several classic spicy compositions open with clove, and it underpins countless spicy-oriental and carnation compositions.
Good to know
Cloves once drove global trade wars; the Dutch burned whole groves to corner supply. Eugenol is restricted by IFRA as a skin sensitiser, and the limit applies to eugenol however it is made, so modern perfumers dose clove oil sparingly and build the rest of the effect from other spice materials.
Peppertree
Rosy peppercorn glow with a juniper whisper
What it is
Schinus molle, the South American peppertree or false pepper, an evergreen whose drooping willow-like branches bear grape-like clusters of small rosy berries, the pink peppercorns. Despite the name it is unrelated to black pepper. Berries and leaves are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted, often alongside the Brazilian relative Schinus terebinthifolius.
How it smells
Bright, dry and effervescent, a rosy, faintly floral spice far gentler than black pepper. Fresh and diffusive on top, it carries warm sweet-spicy facets over a dry, lightly smoky woody base, with green back-notes recalling juniper and angelica. Sparkling and glittering rather than biting.
In perfumery
A top note adding zesty, rose-tinged spice that lifts a composition without heat. It flatters citrus, rose, fruity notes and woods, giving a modern shimmer to fresh-spicy and feminine accords. It animates countless contemporary scents where a soft, sparkling pepper is wanted instead of pungency.
Good to know
Pink peppercorn oil runs very high in terpenes, so it can cloud a fragrance milky if overdosed and tends to fade quickly. The tree grows so vigorously in warm regions like California, Australia and South Africa that it is widely treated as an invasive weed.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown overwhelmingly in Indonesia, with smaller crops in India and elsewhere in tropical Asia. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Bulgarian Rose
The fresh dawn breath of the Rose Valley
What it is
The flower of Rosa damascena, grown chiefly around Kazanlak in central Bulgaria's Rose Valley. Blossoms are hand-picked from before sunrise into the morning, then either steam-distilled into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deep-red absolute. Roughly three to four tonnes of blossoms yield a single kilogram of otto.
How it smells
Bright, dewy and honeyed, with a green lemony lift on top over a spicy, velvety heart. Compared with Turkish rose it reads fresher and clearer. As it settles, a faint clove-like warmth and a waxy, black-tea softness surface beneath the petals.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for transparency and natural radiance, paired with patchouli, oud, sandalwood or fruity notes like lychee. The otto can crystallise in cool weather. It anchors many of the great rose-centered compositions, lending lifelike floral depth.
Good to know
Harvest runs only three to four weeks from mid-May into June, and pickers work before sunrise because the day's heat evaporates the volatile oils. That tiny, weather-dependent window, plus the tonnes of blossoms needed per kilo, makes rose otto one of perfumery's costliest naturals.
Praline
Caramelized nuts folded warm into sugar
What it is
Praline is not a plant but a confectionery accord recreating roasted almonds or hazelnuts cooked in caramelized sugar. Because real praline yields no oil, perfumers build it synthetically, combining caramel molecules such as ethyl maltol with nutty, buttery lactones and toasted Maillard-reaction aroma chemicals into one edible accord.
How it smells
A warm, toasted sweetness sitting between burnt sugar and roasted nut. The opening reads as crisp caramel and almond skin; the heart softens into buttery hazelnut and milk chocolate. The drydown turns cozy and faintly powdery, rounder and less sharp than pure caramel.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base gourmand pillar adding edible nutty warmth and roundness. It pairs with vanilla, tonka, coffee, and woods to anchor dessert compositions. A landmark praline-and-patchouli accord popularized it, and toasted nut sweetness now runs through countless modern gourmands.
Good to know
The confection traces to a 17th-century recipe credited to Clement Lassagne, cook to the French diplomat Cesar, Duke of Choiseul, Count of Plessis-Praslin, whose name it carries. American pralines later swapped almonds for pecans and added cream, producing a softer, fudgier candy.
Vanilla
The warm sweet heart of comfort itself
What it is
Vanilla comes from the cured seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America, now grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia; the vanilla of Tahiti is a different species, Vanilla x tahitensis. Green pods are picked unripe, then blanched, sweated in the sun and slow-dried over months until they darken and develop their aroma and vanillin.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and creamy, with a balsamic depth recalling custard, caramel and dried fruit, a faint smoky tobacco-like edge sitting underneath. It opens soft and gourmand, then dries into a powdery resinous warmth that clings close to skin and reads richer than synthetic vanillin alone.
In perfumery
A base note prized for richness and lasting warmth, vanilla rounds sharp edges and anchors oriental and gourmand compositions. It pairs naturally with tonka, amber, sandalwood and spice. Many of the most enduring oriental and tobacco fragrances build their core around it.
Good to know
Vanilla ranks among the costliest spices because each orchid flower opens for one day and must be hand-pollinated, a technique devised in 1841 by Edmond Albius, a twelve-year-old enslaved boy on Réunion. Most commercial vanilla flavor now relies on synthetic vanillin.
Opoponax
Sweet myrrh purring honey, balsam and old wood
What it is
Known as sweet myrrh, opoponax is the oleo-gum-resin of Commiphora species, chiefly Commiphora guidottii, from Somalia and Ethiopia. The tapped bark exudes a sap that hardens into reddish tears, which are steam-distilled to an oil or solvent-extracted to a resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweeter and rounder than true myrrh, with honeyed, balsamic warmth and a faint effervescent lift on opening. Beneath runs a dusty, slightly animalic, mushroom-tinged depth and dry old-wood character. Less medicinal and sharp than myrrh, closer to benzoin but drier and more powdery.
In perfumery
A base note and soft fixative giving amber accords their honeyed, balsamic glow, it can also lend a sweet lift higher in a chypre. Pairs with labdanum, vanilla, incense and rose. It is a signature thread through classic orientals and powdery amber compositions.
Good to know
The trade name is loosely applied. Historical opoponax came from an unrelated parsley-family plant, Opopanax chironium of the Mediterranean, whereas today's perfumery material is almost always a Commiphora resin, so the single word can name two botanically distinct things.
Benzoin
Warm vanilla balsam wept from a tapped tree
What it is
Benzoin is a balsamic resin from Styrax trees of Southeast Asia. Siam benzoin comes from Styrax tonkinensis (Laos, Vietnam), Sumatra benzoin from Styrax benzoin (Indonesia). Incisions in the bark make the tree exude a gum that hardens over months into reddish tears, processed into resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and balsamic with a pronounced vanilla character and powdery, ambery, faintly cinnamic facets. Siam is rounder and more vanillic; Sumatra is smokier with a cinnamon-styrax edge. It opens soft and creamy, then dries into a cozy, resinous, almost caramelized sweetness.
In perfumery
A warm base note and gentle fixative lending sweetness, body and a vanillic glow to amber accords. It blends with labdanum, vanilla, tonka and incense, smoothing orientals and gourmands. Benzoin is a defining warmth in golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
Benzoin gave its name to benzoic acid and, through it, to the chemical term benzene. The word itself traces to the Arabic luban jawi, "frankincense of Java." The resin never flows on its own; every tear is the tree healing an incision deliberately cut into its bark.
Fragrance Character
The first minutes run hot and sharp, the peppertree and spices projecting with real force. As the heat settles, Bulgarian rose surfaces through the patchouli, its petals slightly bruised by the praline clinging beneath them. The drydown becomes a skin-close resin, vanilla and benzoin thickening into something almost edible, worn rather than announced.

Perfumer
Guillaume Flavigny studied chemistry, then ISIPCA and the Givaudan Perfumery School, and joined Givaudan's Paris fine fragrance team in 2003. He composed Tom Ford Rose Prick, Balmain Ambre Gris and Ex Nihilo Vétiver Moloko, and co-created Valentino Uomo Born in Roma with Antoine Maisondieu.
