Turath
The Story
Turath means heritage, and the reference is One Thousand and One Nights. The bottle is decorated with the scenes the name points to, a dhow, a camel, palm trees, tents, figures drinking qahwa and a crescent moon, and Asghar Adam Ali composed the oud and rose inside it to match that register.
Fruity
Ripe orchard flush of juice
The succulent sweetness of peach, pear, apple, or berry, soft and dewy with a nectar-like ripeness distinct from sharp citrus. It brings a playful, mouthwatering roundness that feels youthful, juicy, and lighthearted.
Warm Spicy
Glowing embers of the spice drawer
The rounded heat of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, dry and slightly resinous, like a baking pantry rather than a sharp kitchen. It creates a flushed, enveloping warmth that feels intimate and cool-weather, hugging the skin from within.
Woody
Dry grain of cut timber
The smell of cedar shavings, sandalwood, and dry vetiver roots, a sanded, resinous warmth with a faint pencil-box rasp. It feels grounded and composed, the quiet backbone that makes a scent read as serious and lasting.
Sweet
Edible warmth on the skin
A rounded, sugary character that suggests caramel, honey, or spun candy without any single one dominating. It reads as comforting and indulgent, the gourmand pull that makes a fragrance feel soft, inviting, and almost good enough to taste.
Amber
Golden resin glowing warm
A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Smoky
Charred wood and rising embers
The dry, charred scent of burning wood, smoldering incense, and lingering ash, sometimes tarry, sometimes wispy and gray. It feels brooding and atmospheric, conjuring a dying fire and a cool current of air carrying its last breath.
Dried Fruits
Sun-soaked larder of figs, dates and prunes
What it is
Dried fruits is an abstract accord rather than a single material, evoking sun-dried figs, dates, prunes, raisins and apricots. Perfumers build it from natural extracts such as fig and prune absolute alongside aroma-chemicals like fruity lactones and damascones that mimic concentrated, dehydrated fruit.
How it smells
Deep, jammy and syrup-sweet, with the chewy concentration that drying brings: stewed plum, sticky date, leathery fig skin and the boozy edge of raisin steeped in rum. A faint nutty, tobacco-like dryness keeps it from turning cloying as it warms on skin.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base accord adding gourmand richness and dried-out sweetness to oriental, amber and tobacco compositions. It pairs with rum, tobacco, honey, dates and spices, and underpins boozy fruity orientals and the stewed-fruit warmth of spicy gourmand blends.
Good to know
Drying fruit doesn't just remove water; it concentrates sugars and triggers reactions that create new aroma molecules absent in the fresh fruit. That is why a dried fig or prune smells leathery and caramelized rather than simply like a shrunken fresh one.
Damask Rose
The empress of roses, distilled at dawn
What it is
Damask rose is Rosa damascena, a hardy hybrid shrub cultivated mainly in Bulgaria's Rose Valley, Turkey's Isparta region and Iran. Petals are hand-picked before sunrise, then either steam-distilled into rose otto or solvent-extracted into rose absolute, each capturing a different facet of the bloom.
How it smells
Deep, honeyed and unmistakably rosy, with a green, dewy freshness up top and a spicy, almost peppery warmth beneath. The otto leans clean and waxy with a clove-like edge; the absolute is darker, jammier and more fruity. The drydown holds a soft, lingering floral sweetness.
In perfumery
A central heart note prized for body and roundness. It blends with oud, patchouli, geranium, saffron and fruity notes, anchoring oriental and chypre builds. Dark, jammy rose compositions showcase its richness, while countless rose soliflores lean on damascones for their lift.
Good to know
Roughly three to four tonnes of blossoms yield a single kilogram of rose otto, placing it among the costliest naturals. The damascones and damascenones, isolated from rose in the 1970s, became landmark aroma molecules that read as rosy at vanishingly small concentrations.
Candied Fruits
Sugar-glazed fruit gone sticky and intense
What it is
An abstract gourmand accord rather than a single material, evoking fruit preserved in sugar syrup. Perfumers build it from lactones, chiefly gamma-undecalactone for waxy peach, often blended with davana for dried apricot, plus orange, plum and synthetic sugar molecules to suggest crystallized, chewy candied fruit.
How it smells
Dense, jammy and syrupy-sweet, like glace cherries, candied orange peel and dried apricot soaked in sugar. The fresh juiciness of ripe fruit is gone, replaced by a concentrated, slightly waxy, almost caramelized stickiness that opens bright and dries down warm, soft and confectionery.
In perfumery
A heart accord in gourmand and oriental fragrances, adding rich edible depth over bases of vanilla, tonka and amber. It rounds fruity-floral and woody blends. The pioneering sweet-gourmand orientals and various plum-forward styles lean on candied stone-fruit effects to deepen and thicken their sweetness without sharpness.
Good to know
Candying fruit is one of the oldest preservation methods, used in Roman and medieval kitchens long before refrigeration to carry summer harvests through winter. The perfume note borrows that culinary memory; gamma-undecalactone, its backbone, is also known to perfumers as aldehyde C-14, an early lactone-type peach material.
Strawberry
Ripe berry constructed from two defining materials
What it is
Strawberry yields no usable essential oil, so the note is always an accord. Furaneol carries the ripe, jammy, faintly caramelised depth, and ethyl methylphenylglycidate, nicknamed strawberry aldehyde though it is a glycidic ester, supplies the bright candied signal. Fruity esters fill in the juice. Furaneol occurs in the fruit itself, but the perfumery material is made rather than extracted.
How it smells
Crushed ripe berry, sweet and slightly cooked, with a green leafy edge and a winey note behind the sugar. The lab-built version is brighter and more emphatic, closer to berry candy, and holds one shape as it wears. A naturals-only reconstruction is softer and hazier, less stable, and drifts toward jam and leaf as it dries.
In perfumery
Strawberry lifts florals, soft musks and skin-like bases, and builds dessert accords beside vanilla, sugar and cream. Furaneol is powerful and turns toward burnt caramel when overdosed, so it is used in small amounts. The effect sits in the top and upper heart, fading well before the woods and musks that carry it.
Good to know
Furaneol is also one of the key compounds in pineapple and guava, which is why those accords share a jammy sweetness with strawberry. Aldehyde C-16 has no natural counterpart, so a naturals-only build has to reach that brightness by other means, usually esters and jammy botanicals that are harder to hold steady from batch to batch.
Spicy Notes
The warm crackle that wakes a fragrance up
What it is
An accord category rather than one material, built from spice plants: clove buds, cinnamon bark, black pepper berries, nutmeg seed, cardamom pods and ginger rhizome. Aromas are won by steam distillation or CO2 extraction of the dried part, or matched with aroma-chemicals like eugenol and cinnamic aldehyde.
How it smells
Warm, dry and prickling, with a faint heat on the nose. Pepper reads sharp and crisp, clove medicinal and numbing, cinnamon sweet and woody, nutmeg dusty. The blend opens bright and biting, then settles into rounded, ambery warmth as the volatile edge burns off.
In perfumery
Usually a heart or top accent adding energy, contrast and warmth. It bridges citrus tops to woody-ambery bases and animates florals and orientals. It pairs with rose, amber, leather and tobacco. It is showcased in pepper-and-clove spice studies and in the great spicy orientals of the twentieth century.
Good to know
The medieval spice trade made these materials costly luxuries (a pound of pepper could cost a craftsman several days' wages), driving voyages that redrew world maps. Clove eugenol and cinnamic aldehyde are flagged skin sensitizers, so IFRA caps their use, nudging perfumers toward gentler synthetic spice molecules.
Apple
No apple oil exists, so the note is built
What it is
Apple yields no usable essential oil or absolute, so every apple note in perfumery is constructed rather than extracted. Mainstream houses build it from fruity esters such as Manzanate, a Givaudan material, along with hexyl acetate and ethyl 2-methylbutyrate. All-botanical houses reach instead for Roman chamomile, whose angelate esters carry a genuinely cidery apple sweetness, supported by davana and green materials.
How it smells
The aroma-chemical build is bright and legible, crisp and tart-green with a candied lift, and it holds one clear shape from the first minutes onward. A botanical reconstruction is softer and hazier, honeyed and herbal at the edges, and it drifts as it wears, blooming and receding rather than staying fixed.
In perfumery
Apple lifts fruity florals, chypres, aquatics and gourmand blends, and it sits comfortably beside rose, musk and light woods. Built from esters it needs only a trace, and the green or candied character can be dialled with precision. Built from botanicals it has to be rebalanced by hand, since no single material delivers the effect.
Good to know
Neither route is the fruit, so the honest difference is texture and stability rather than authenticity. Ester-built apple survives soap, detergent and heat, and repeats identically batch to batch. Roman chamomile and davana are costly, vary with harvest and project more quietly, which is why an all-botanical apple remains rare.
Cardamom
Green spice cracking open with citrus heat
What it is
Cardamom is the dried seed pod of Elettaria cardamomum, a tall perennial in the ginger family native to the forests of southern India and now widely farmed in Guatemala. The small green pods are hand-picked before fully ripe and dried; the cracked seeds are steam-distilled for their oil.
How it smells
Bright, green and spicy-fresh, with a cool eucalyptus-camphor lift over warm peppery sweetness. There are facets of lemon peel, pine resin and a faint smoky breadiness, like cracked pods in chai. It opens sharp and effervescent, then settles into a soft, balsamic warmth.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice adding sparkle and an airy, modern coolness, it bridges citrus openings and woody-amber bases without the heaviness of clove or cinnamon. It pairs with bergamot, rose, leather and oud, and is the defining spark of many a modern aromatic and woody-leather scent.
Good to know
Cardamom ranks among the world's most expensive spices, behind only saffron and vanilla, because every pod is hand-harvested at a precise unripe stage. India and Guatemala dominate supply, and the green pods rapidly lose aroma once cracked, so distillers work quickly.
Pineapple
Pineapple gives no oil, so the note is assembled
What it is
Pineapple yields nothing usable by expression or steam distillation, so the note is always an accord. The aroma-chemical route is led by allyl caproate, also sold as allyl hexanoate, which has been in perfumers' hands since the early 1920s, with short esters such as ethyl butyrate beside it. Botanical houses assemble it from ylang-ylang, balsams, citrus and natural isolates.
How it smells
The ester build is vivid and sharply legible, a bright hard-candy pineapple with a crisp sparkle that stays where it is placed. A botanical reconstruction is rounder and warmer, more flesh than candy, with a green-tart edge and a balsamic underside, and it blooms and fades instead of sitting still.
In perfumery
A trace lifts an opening, while a heavier hand drives a full tropical or fruit-punch effect. Pineapple sits easily with coconut, citrus, jasmine and other white florals, and with warm resins. Allyl caproate is powerful enough to work at trace level, whereas a botanical build needs patient balancing and turns jammy when overdosed.
Good to know
Both versions are impressions, since no pineapple extract stands behind either one. The ester route is consistent, stable and easy to place, which is why it turns up wherever a tropical accent is wanted. Botanical materials cost more, shift between batches, and give a softer pineapple that carries less distance.
Peach
Built from lactones, because the fruit gives nothing
What it is
Peach flesh yields almost nothing to distillation, so the note is always constructed. The peach effect rests on lactones, above all gamma-decalactone and gamma-undecalactone, the latter sold as aldehyde C-14 although it is a lactone and no aldehyde. Both are made synthetically, and gamma-decalactone is also produced by fermenting castor oil with yeast, which qualifies that version as natural.
How it smells
Downy skin and soft flesh, creamy and slightly buttery, sweet at the edge of overripe. A lab-built peach is brighter and more linear, reading as peach and little else from the first spray onward. A reconstruction leaning on botanicals is hazier and less stable, floral and tea-like around the fruit, and shifts as it dries.
In perfumery
The note usually sits in the heart, bridging rose and white florals into woods, amber and musk. Osmanthus absolute carries the same lactones naturally, alongside ionones and damascones, which is why it reads of apricot and peach on its own and anchors most botanical peach accords. Davana sits beside it with dried fruit and a boozy warmth.
Good to know
Lactones are tenacious, so peach tends to hold well whichever route builds it. Osmanthus absolute is among the costlier materials in the palette, which is one reason botanical peach accords stay uncommon. Microbial production narrowed that gap for the lactones themselves, since fermentation-derived gamma-decalactone fell steeply in price once it reached industrial scale.
Cinnamon
Red bark warmth dusted with sweet fire
What it is
Cinnamon is the dried inner bark of evergreen Cinnamomum trees. True Ceylon cinnamon, C. verum, comes from Sri Lanka; the coarser, cheaper cassia from C. cassia is common in food. Bark strips are peeled, curled into quills, and steam-distilled into a bark oil rich in cinnamaldehyde.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and dry-spicy, with a glowing red-hot quality from cinnamaldehyde and a soft clove-like nuance from eugenol. Ceylon bark is rounder, faintly floral and refined; cassia is sharper and more biting. The dry-down feels woody, balsamic and faintly leathery.
In perfumery
A heart-note spice giving oriental and gourmand scents their cozy heat, it pairs with vanilla, amber, rose, apple and tobacco. Used sparingly, it adds glow without sting. It marks the classic spicy oriental and the spiced heart of many autumn fragrances.
Good to know
Cinnamaldehyde and related compounds are skin sensitizers, and IFRA restricts those molecules directly, which is what limits cinnamon bark oil in fragrance. Once worth more than its weight in gold, cinnamon helped drive Portuguese and later Dutch control of Ceylon; the Dutch even burned stockpiles to keep prices high.
Coffee
The dark heart of morning, bottled
What it is
Coffee comes from the roasted seeds of Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, evergreen shrubs grown across the tropical bean belt. Each fruit holds two inner seeds that are dried, then roasted to develop aroma. Perfumers use a roasted-bean absolute, a CO2 extract, or aroma molecules built to mimic the roast.
How it smells
Dark and roasted, with bitter cocoa, toasted nuts and a faint smoky char. The opening is sharp and grainy like freshly ground beans; beneath sit caramelized, almost burnt-sugar tones. The drydown turns warmer and rounder, drifting toward chocolate, tobacco and a milky, slightly oily softness.
In perfumery
Usually a heart or upper-base note adding energy, bitterness and gourmand depth. It pairs with vanilla, tonka, patchouli, rose and amber, cutting sweetness with a roasted edge. It anchored an entire genre of masculine gourmands, and elsewhere makes coffee the unmistakable centerpiece of a composition.
Good to know
Coffee's roast aroma comes largely from 2-furfurylthiol, a sulfur molecule detectable near 0.01 parts per billion, so a trace reads instantly as fresh brew. Natural coffee extracts are unstable and fade or turn flat, so most modern coffee accords are partly or wholly reconstructed.
Black Currant
Tart purple berries with a sly catty growl
What it is
Black currant is the small dark berry of Ribes nigrum, a shrub native to northern Europe and Asia. Both berries and aromatic buds (cassis) carry the scent; an absolute is solvent-extracted from the buds, while the fruit facet in perfumery is usually rebuilt with aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
Sharp, juicy and tart, a burst of purple-red berry with green leafy edges and a wine-like depth. Its hallmark is a sulphurous, faintly sweaty, animalic catty undertone that keeps it from reading as merely fruity. It opens fresh and biting, then sweetens into jammy darkness.
In perfumery
A top-note material adding fruity sparkle, tartness and a mischievous edge to florals and chypres. The bud absolute deepens rose and lends a green-fruity lift. It headlines bright fruity-floral openers and powers the celebrated cassis-rose accord at the heart of dark, velvety chypres.
Good to know
The signature catty smell comes from sulphur-containing thiol molecules, the same family that gives buchu, grapefruit and tomcat spray their pungency. At a few parts per million these thiols read as ripe fruit; concentrated, they turn startlingly skunky and sharp.
Pepper
Dry, sneeze-bright heat that snaps awake
What it is
The dried unripe berries of Piper nigrum, a tropical climbing vine grown in India, Indonesia and Vietnam. Picked green and sun-dried to wrinkled black peppercorns, they are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted to a pale, mobile essential oil rich in terpenes; the pungent alkaloid piperine stays behind, non-volatile.
How it smells
Dry, warm and prickly, with a fresh woody-terpenic sparkle on top recalling a freshly cranked pepper mill. Beneath the bite sit resinous, faintly green and clove-like facets. It opens sharp and crackling, then settles into a soft, spicy-woody warmth rather than fading away.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice giving lift, texture and a peppery snap without sweetness. It electrifies woods, vetiver, rose and citrus, adding edge or sparkle to either side of the gender line. Some compositions build entirely on Madagascan pepper over cedar and akigalawood to dramatize the note.
Good to know
Black pepper was once so valuable it served as currency, rent and dowry, helping drive the European spice trade and age of exploration. Green, white, black and red peppercorns all come from this one vine, differing only by ripeness at harvest and processing.
Coconut
Creamy sun-warm tropical sweetness on skin
What it is
A scent drawn from the fruit of the coconut palm, Cocos nucifera, of tropical coastlines. The aroma comes mainly from lactones in the white flesh; since coconut oil is a fixed oil and yields no essential oil on distillation, perfumery relies on isolated lactones, chiefly gamma-nonalactone, and synthetic accords.
How it smells
Creamy, milky and sweet with a soft nutty warmth, the smell of suntan lotion and fresh coconut flesh. It carries a faintly buttery, almost waxy richness and a tropical, slightly toasted edge. The effect is rounded and lush rather than sharp, fading to a soft sun-cream warmth.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing creamy tropical volume and a beachy, gourmand softness. It pairs with vanilla, tiare, ylang-ylang, frangipani and tonka in monoi and solar accords. Coconut defines summer solar scents and the coconut-vanilla heart of countless beach fragrances.
Good to know
Gamma-nonalactone, the molecule behind the classic coconut note, is nicknamed aldehyde C-18 even though it is a lactone, not an aldehyde, a quirk of early perfumery naming. Pure coconut oil smells nearly neutral, so almost every coconut perfume is a reconstruction.
Cumin
Hot, sweaty, animalic skin warmth
What it is
The dried seeds of Cuminum cyminum, a small annual herb in the carrot family cultivated in India, Iran, Syria and around the Mediterranean. The crescent-shaped seeds are steam-distilled into an oil rich in cuminaldehyde, the compound behind both its culinary and its intensely animalic scent.
How it smells
Pungent, warm and earthy, with a sharp green-spicy top and an unmistakable sweaty, cumin-and-skin facet that reads as deeply human. In trace amounts it adds carnal warmth; overdosed it turns frankly body-odour-like. The dry-down is dusty, nutty and oddly comforting.
In perfumery
A heart-note spice used sparingly for skin-like warmth and a daring animalic pulse, paired with rose, leather, labdanum and orange blossom. Cumin sits at the spicy heart of many oriental compositions and powers the carnal warmth of several reformulated classics.
Good to know
Cuminaldehyde so closely echoes a human sweat compound that perfumers call cumin polarising: wearers read it as either intimate or unwashed. A drop too many tips a whole composition, so it is usually dosed at fractions of a percent.
Sweet Orange
Sunlit zest squeezed straight from the peel
What it is
The essential oil of Citrus sinensis, the common sweet orange grown across Brazil, Florida, Spain and Italy. The aroma sits in tiny glands in the fruit's rind and is released by cold-pressing the peel, frequently recovered as a byproduct of the juice industry.
How it smells
Bright, juicy and instantly recognisable: sweet orange flesh with a sherbet sparkle and a faint green-peel bitterness behind it. It bursts open sunny and round, then fades quickly, leaving a soft, slightly waxy sweetness rather than the sharp tang of lemon or bergamot.
In perfumery
A top note prized for its cheerful, edible lift and natural sweetness that rounds sharper citruses. It pairs with neroli, clove, cinnamon and vanilla in colognes and gourmands, opening countless eaux de cologne and lifting the citrus chord of classic green-citrus blends.
Good to know
Unlike bergamot, cold-pressed sweet orange oil contains little bergapten, so it is essentially non-phototoxic on sunlit skin. It is also one of perfumery's cheapest naturals, since the world's vast juice industry yields orange peel oil as an abundant secondary product.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.
Good to know
Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. IFRA caps how much expressed bergamot oil a leave-on product may carry, so perfumers either dose within that limit or reach for a furocoumarin-free (FCF) grade.
Pink Pepper
Bright rosy berries with a sparkling spice fizz
What it is
Pink pepper is the dried berry of the Peruvian pepper tree Schinus molle, native to the Andes and a member of the cashew family Anacardiaceae, not a true pepper. The rose-colored berries are steam-distilled or CO2-extracted into an oil dominated by alpha-phellandrene, limonene and pinene.
How it smells
Bright, dry and sparkling, more rosy and fruity than black pepper, with only a soft prickle of spice. Crushed-berry, juniper-like resin and faint citrus facets give a fizzy, airy lift. It flashes peppery on top, then fades quickly into a gentle warm spiciness.
In perfumery
A favoured top-to-heart note that adds effervescent spice and a rosy glow without heat or bite. It brightens florals, freshens woods and ambers, and pairs with rose, bergamot and patchouli. Its sparkle opens many modern scents, notably the tea-and-bergamot top of bright fruity-floral bombs.
Good to know
Despite the name, these berries are botanically unrelated to true pepper, Piper nigrum; the resemblance is purely aromatic. As an Anacardiaceae cousin of cashew and mango, Schinus can trigger reactions in people sensitive to that family, so culinary use of the berries is best in moderation.
Agarwood
The wounded heartwood where oud begins
What it is
Agarwood is the dark, resin-saturated heartwood an Aquilaria tree lays down after a wound sets off its defences, with fungi and other stresses deepening the response. Healthy wood is pale and odourless; the defensive resin transforms it into a dense, fragrant material. Distilled or burned, that resin becomes oud. The two words name one thing at different stages.
How it smells
As raw chips on a charcoal burner, agarwood gives a warm, sweet, woody smoke laced with resin, spice and a faint animal-balsamic depth. Higher grades sink toward honeyed incense and cooling camphor; lower or younger wood smells greener, sharper and more fermented, closer to damp earth.
In perfumery
Most agarwood is consumed as wood rather than perfume, burned in the bakhoor and incense traditions of the Gulf, India, Japan and China. The finest chips fetch staggering prices, and CITES Appendix II covers every Aquilaria species, planted as well as wild, so much of today's supply comes from inoculated plantation trees moving under permit.
Good to know
Grade tracks resin density: the heaviest, darkest pieces sink in water and are the most prized, the reason East Asian names for it mean sinking incense. The rarest grade of all, kyara or kinam, is sweeter and cooler than ordinary agarwood and treated as almost sacred. Aquilaria is CITES Appendix II, so the trade is regulated rather than closed: Annotation 14 exempts finished products packaged and ready for retail trade, but names wood chips, beads and carvings out of that exemption.
Rose
The queen of flowers, fresh and endlessly deep
What it is
Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery

White Musk

These lab molecules replaced endangered deer musk and now anchor the base of nearly every mass-market and designer fragrance made.

Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown overwhelmingly in Indonesia, with smaller crops in India and elsewhere in tropical Asia. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.

Oakmoss is not a true moss but a lichen, Evernia prunastri, growing on oak and other deciduous bark across temperate Europe and North Africa, notably the Balkans, France and Morocco. The harvested thalli are solvent-extracted into a dark, viscous concrete and absolute, the raw materials used in perfumery.
How it smells
