Guillaume Flavigny grew up with a father devoted to music, and he still talks about formulas in musical terms. He studied chemistry, spent 1998 to 2000 at ISIPCA and then trained at the Givaudan Perfumery School until 2003. In 2002, while still a student there, he won the international prize for young perfumers. He joined Givaudan's Paris team, spent two years under Antoine Lie, and was later working in New York.
He sees no quarrel between naturals and synthetics and reaches for the latter when he wants a modern line or more staying power. His credits run from Balmain Ambre Gris (2008) and Comme des Garçons Black (2013) to Elizabeth Arden White Tea (2017), Tom Ford Rose Prick (2020) and Sisley L'Eau Rêvée d'Isa (2023). He worked on Valentino Uomo Born in Roma (2019), shared Montblanc Signature (2020) with Natalie Gracia-Cetto, and signed Comme des Garçons Max Richter 01 in 2025.
The Harmonist, founded in 2015 and based in Paris and Los Angeles, built its opening collection on five elements, earth, water, wood, fire and metal, each in a yin and a yang version. Flavigny composed all ten. Hypnotizing Fire is the yin side of fire: pepper tree, pimento berries and clove over Bulgarian rose, patchouli and praline, settling on Madagascan vanilla, benzoin and opoponax. The parfum version trades the opoponax for oud.
