Chypre Palatin
The Story
Chypre Palatin is Bertrand Duchaufour writing a chypre at Renaissance scale, the register MDCI takes from Catherine de' Medici's palaces and the Uffizi. It is built for volume rather than restraint, which is unusual for a form that normally depends on dryness.
Amber
Golden resin glowing warm
A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and skin
The dry, smoky scent of tanned hide, edged with birch tar, tobacco, and a faint bitter rasp. It feels confident and worn-in, evoking a well-loved jacket, suede gloves, and a quiet sense of authority on the skin.
Sweet
Edible warmth on the skin

Warm Spicy
Glowing embers of the spice drawer

Green
Crushed leaves and cut stems

Powdery
Soft hush of dressed skin

Galbanum
Bitter green sap that smells of crushed stems
What it is
Galbanum is an oleo-resin that weeps from cuts in the stems and roots of Ferula gummosa, a giant fennel of the carrot family native to Iran and Central Asia. The hardened gum is steam-distilled into an oil or solvent-extracted into a dark, viscous brown absolute.
How it smells
Sharp, bitter and intensely green, like snapped plant stems and crushed leaves with a turpentine-like, resinous bite. Beneath the harsh opening lies a musky, woody, slightly balsamic warmth, and at low doses it reads as cool, dewy, living greenery rather than aggression.
In perfumery
One of the few natural green base notes, valued as a fixative and as the defining accent of green chypres and florals. It pairs with oakmoss, iris, hyacinth and neroli, and gives the bracing green overture to many classic green florals, sometimes famously overdosed for a wall of greenery.
Good to know
Galbanum is among the oldest aromatics on record, named in the Book of Exodus as an ingredient of the sacred temple incense and burned in ancient Egypt and Persia. Iran remains the principal source of the gum thousands of years later.
Aldehydes
Sparkling waxy lift that built modern perfume
What it is
A family of organic molecules; in perfumery the term usually means fatty aliphatic aldehydes, carbon chains roughly eight to thirteen atoms long, labelled by length such as C-10 or C-12. First identified in rose oil and citrus zest, they are now almost entirely produced synthetically.
How it smells
Bright, abstract and effervescent. The fatty aldehydes read as waxy, soapy and candle-like with metallic, citrus and floral facets, evoking clean laundry, hot ironing and orange peel. They flash intensely on top, then lift and aerate everything beneath them like sparkling light.
In perfumery
Top notes used in tiny doses to add radiance, volume and clean shimmer above florals. C-10, C-11 and C-12 form the classic aldehydic trio. They define the snowy sparkle of the great aldehydic florals, the genre-defining templates that built an entire family of perfumes.
Good to know
Their fame is partly accident: a perfumer reportedly overdosed the aldehydes in a 1921 trial, and the client chose that very overdosed sample. The same family of aldehydes is released when a candle flame is blown out, the source of that waxy smell.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
In perfumery
A foundational base note and the natural backbone of most amber accords, usually built with vanilla and benzoin. A strong fixative, it deepens chypres, orientals and leathers and pairs with rose, oakmoss and incense. It underpins many golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
In antiquity labdanum was combed from the matted beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had browsed through cistus thickets, then raked off with a thong-fringed tool called a ladanisterion. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials, predating distillation by millennia.
Clementine
The sweetest, sunniest small winter citrus
What it is
Clementine is a small, near-seedless citrus, a tangor crossing mandarin with sweet orange in the Citrus reticulata group. Grown around the Mediterranean and North Africa, it ripens in winter. Its fragrance comes from oil cold-pressed from the thin, loosely attached, easily peeled rind.
How it smells
Sweet, juicy and rounded, gentler and less sharp than lemon or orange. The peel oil is candied and tangy with a soft, almost floral brightness and a little zesty bitterness at the edge. Cheerful and fruity, it dries down warm and lightly sugary.
In perfumery
A sparkling top note adding juicy, fruity sweetness and an uplifting opening. Softer than bergamot, it suits gourmand, fresh and cosy winter compositions, pairing with vanilla, neroli, ginger and other citruses. It brightens festive and fruity scents seeking a friendly, edible glow.
Good to know
The clementine traces to a chance seedling found in the late nineteenth century by Brother Clement Rodier, a French monk, in the garden of an orphanage at Misserghin near Oran, Algeria, and named for him in 1902. He grafted the natural hybrid, and its winter ripening made it a traditional Christmas-stocking fruit across Europe.
Hyacinth
Cold spring blooms, green honeyed and narcotic
What it is
The dense flower spike of Hyacinthus orientalis, a bulbous spring plant native to the eastern Mediterranean and cultivated heavily in the Netherlands. A true absolute is solvent-extracted from the fresh blooms, but it is rare and costly, so synthetic reconstructions dominate nearly all modern use.
How it smells
Intensely green and leafy with a cool, watery freshness, threaded by a sharp green-honeyed sweetness and a heady, narcotic floral heart. An earthy, faintly bulbous undertone grounds it. The opening reads crisp and sappy before settling into soft, indolic floral warmth.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing green, springlike volume and lift, often paired with galbanum, narcissus, rose and violet leaf. It helped shape classic green florals, contributing the cool, dewy texture that defines an early-spring garden accord just after rain.
Good to know
The signature green-honeyed sharpness comes mostly from phenylacetaldehyde, present at barely one percent of the absolute yet detectable at extremely low levels. Because real hyacinth oil is prohibitively expensive, perfumers rebuild the note from molecules such as PADMA, the more stable acetal of that aldehyde.
Lavender
Cool herbal blue from a sunlit hillside
What it is
Lavender is a woody Mediterranean shrub in the mint family, mainly Lavandula angustifolia, grown across Provence and Bulgaria. The flowering tops are cut at peak bloom and steam-distilled, the purple spikes yielding a pale essential oil; solvent extraction of the flowers gives a darker, richer absolute.
How it smells
Clean, herbal and aromatic, with a cool camphor lift over soft floral sweetness. The opening is sharp, green, almost minty; the dry-down warms into hay, faint vanilla and a powdery, slightly fruity calm. True angustifolia smells rounder and sweeter than the harsher lavandin hybrid.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note and the backbone of the fougere family, pairing with oakmoss, coumarin and tonka in barbershop accords. It also softens citrus colognes and bright florals. It anchors the great pioneering aromatic fougeres and countless aromatic masculine scents.
Good to know
Provence lavender fields draw millions of visitors, yet much commercial oil is actually lavandin, a sterile hybrid yielding far more per hectare. A spreading bacterial disease, phytoplasma decline spread by sap-sucking planthoppers, has pushed true angustifolia plantings higher into cooler mountain altitudes.
Sage
Silver-leaf herb, dry and faintly camphorous
What it is
An aromatic from Salvia, an evergreen Mediterranean shrub in the mint family. Common sage (Salvia officinalis) and clary sage (Salvia sclarea) are grown in France, the Balkans and Russia. Essential oil is steam-distilled from the silvery leaves and flowering tops; clary sage also yields a soft, ambery absolute.
How it smells
Green, herbal and aromatic with a cool, camphoraceous, slightly minty bite and a dry, sun-warmed-leaf quality. Common sage is sharper and more medicinal; clary sage is softer, with sweet, tea-like, ambery and faintly musky-tobacco facets. Both feel savory and herbaceous rather than floral or sweet.
In perfumery
Mostly a top-to-heart note bringing fresh, aromatic lift and a herbal-fougere signature, while clary sage adds smooth ambery roundness and fixative warmth. It pairs with lavender, citrus, geranium and labdanum. It runs through countless fougeres and features in fresh, salty wood-sage compositions.
Good to know
Clary sage oil contains sclareol, the natural precursor chemists convert into Ambrox, the key amber molecule that replaced much whale-derived ambergris. The Latin salvia comes from salvare, to heal, reflecting sage's long history as a medicinal and purifying herb burned for cleansing.
Plum
A dark stewed-fruit accord assembled, never extracted
What it is
Plum yields no usable essential oil, so the note is always built. Its character rests on beta-damascenone and the damascones, honeyed and wine-like molecules that carry most of what reads as plum. An aroma-chemical build uses them directly; a botanical build reaches for davana and osmanthus absolute, which carry damascenone and dried stone fruit of their own.
How it smells
The lab-built version is jammy and a little candied, bright up front, and keeps a single steady shape from opening to drydown. A botanical reconstruction runs darker and winier, closer to fruit slow-cooked and left to cool, and it moves as it warms, the dried-fruit facet surfacing late and the sweetness pulling back.
In perfumery
Plum belongs to a different material class than its neighbours, damascones rather than the lactones of peach or the esters of apple, which is why it reads dark rather than juicy. It flatters rose, patchouli, woods and amber, and sits comfortably in gourmand and chypre structures.
Good to know
Damascenone has an unusually low odour threshold, so it works at trace levels and dominates quickly if overdosed. Davana carries the same risk in the botanical route. Osmanthus absolute is one of the few naturally sourced fruit materials of any kind, which is part of why an all-botanical plum stays uncommon.
Rose
The queen of flowers, fresh and endlessly deep
What it is
Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery
A heart note of extraordinary range, rose adds body, freshness and natural floral richness, blending with almost anything. It anchors the chypre and floral families and pairs with oud, patchouli and violet. It is the showpiece of countless classic floral and chypre compositions.
Good to know
It takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of hand-picked blossoms to distill a single kilogram of rose otto, which helps explain why the oil can rival precious metals in price. Picking begins before sunrise and runs into the morning, while the flower still holds its oil.
Iris
Cool powdered earth from a patiently aged root
What it is
Perfumery iris comes not from the flower but the rhizome of Iris pallida and Iris germanica, grown mainly in Tuscany and Morocco. The dug rhizomes are dried and aged three to five years so aromatic irones develop, then ground and steam-distilled into waxy orris butter.
How it smells
Cool, powdery and rooty, suggesting violet, suede and fresh-sawn wood dusted with face powder. There is a damp earthy minerality, a faint carrot-like sweetness and a buttery, almost doughy softness. It feels silvery and restrained, more texture than perfume, lingering quietly on skin.

A precious heart-note material giving powdery elegance, cool depth and a velvety, refined backbone to chypres and florals. It pairs with violet, rose, sandalwood and ambrette. It is the soul of cool powdery masculines, austere green florals and minimalist orris-forward compositions.
Good to know
Orris butter is among perfumery's costliest materials: a tonne of dried, aged rhizome yields only about two kilograms of butter, and high-irone grades can fetch tens of thousands of euros per kilo. The multi-year aging that builds its scent is what makes true iris so rare.
Jasmine
The heady white flower at perfumery's beating heart
What it is
Jasmine is the blossom of climbing shrubs in the olive family, chiefly Jasminum grandiflorum, grown in Egypt, India and Morocco, plus Jasminum sambac from India. The fragile flowers are picked by hand from before first light into the morning, solvent-extracted with hexane into a waxy concrete, then washed with ethanol to yield the absolute.
How it smells
A warm, lush white floral, sweet and honeyed with an animalic underside. Sambac leans green, tea-like and luminous; grandiflorum reads fruitier and creamier, with more weight. Both carry a heady, narcotic richness over a green-fruity opening, drying to a soft, skin-warm, faintly mushroomy-musky base.
In perfumery
A heart-note cornerstone, bridging citrus tops and woody bases while lending volume, sensuality and rounded floral body. It pairs with rose, tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and musk. Jasmine anchors many of the great classic florals and can stand alone as a radiant soliflore.

Roughly five thousand hand-picked flowers yield a single gram of absolute, ranking natural jasmine among the costliest perfume materials. Part of its depth comes from indole, a molecule that smells frankly animalic, close to decay, when concentrated, yet reads radiant and living at the small percentage the flower naturally holds.
Gardenia
Creamy white bloom with a mushroom heart
What it is
Gardenia is a glossy-leaved evergreen shrub of the coffee family, native to China and Japan, prized for its waxy white flowers. The living bloom yields almost no oil to extraction, so perfumers recreate it through headspace analysis and reconstruction from jasmine, tuberose and aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
Lush, creamy and white-floral, layering jasmine sweetness over tuberose richness. A green, almost buttery freshness opens it, while a curious mushroom-and-coconut facet sits at its core, lending a fleshy, slightly savory depth that keeps the sweetness grounded and lifelike.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing opulent, velvety body to white-floral and tropical compositions. It pairs with tuberose, ylang-ylang, jasmine and coconut, and stars in soliflores built entirely around the bloom.
Good to know
A true gardenia absolute barely exists commercially: the flower yields too little material to extract economically, so nearly every gardenia note is a clever reconstruction. The shrub was named for Scottish-born naturalist Alexander Garden in the eighteenth century.
Tolu Balsam
Honeyed resin tapped from a South American tree
What it is
A semisolid resin from Myroxylon balsamum, a tall legume tree native to Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. Workers cut V-shaped wounds in the trunk and gather the brown sticky exudate, which oxidizes and hardens. Rich in benzoic and cinnamic acid esters, it is processed into resinoid or absolute.
How it smells
Warm and sweet with a soft balsamic body, threaded with cinnamon spice, vanilla and dried honey. The opening reads resinous and faintly floral; over hours it settles into a mellow amber glow recalling caramelized sugar, old wood and cured tobacco. Smooth, never sharp.
In perfumery
A base and fixative material lending warmth, sweetness and staying power to amber, oriental and gourmand accords. It pairs naturally with vanilla, benzoin, labdanum and tobacco, and threads through the classic balsamic builds and amber compositions at the heart of the oriental tradition.
Good to know
The name traces to Tolú in Sucre, Colombia, after the pre-Columbian Tolú people who first used the resin, recorded in early Spanish chronicles. Long before perfumery, tolu balsam was a staple of cough syrups and lozenges, valued as an expectorant and wound treatment.
Oakmoss
The damp green soul of the forest floor
What it is
Oakmoss is not a true moss but a lichen, Evernia prunastri, growing on oak and other deciduous bark across temperate Europe and North Africa, notably the Balkans, France and Morocco. The harvested thalli are solvent-extracted into a dark, viscous concrete and absolute, the raw materials used in perfumery.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and forest-green, with damp bark, wet stone and a leathery, inky undertone. A dry, faintly bitter mossiness carries marine and tar-like facets. The effect is shadowy rather than fresh, evoking the cool floor beneath old trees after rain has soaked the ground.
In perfumery
A base note and the backbone of the chypre family, lending structure, depth and a vintage signature. It pairs classically with bergamot, labdanum and patchouli. It defines the great peach-spiced chypres and the green core of classic galbanum florals, plus countless mossy fougères and masculines.
Good to know
Oakmoss extracts contain atranol and chloroatranol, potent skin allergens the EU prohibited outright in cosmetics in 2017 (Regulation 2017/1410, applying from August 2019). IFRA separately requires low-atranol grades, each molecule below 100 ppm in the extract, and caps the extract itself at 0.1% in fine fragrance; that older ceiling, not the atranol measures, is what quietly reshaped how the classic chypre smells.
Castoreum
Leather and warmth drawn from the beaver
What it is
An animal secretion from the castor sacs, paired cavities under the skin between the pelvis and tail base in both male and female beavers, whose contents blend with urine to mark territory. Trappers dry the sacs, then extract a tincture, resinoid or absolute. Most modern perfumery now relies on synthetic recreations.
How it smells
Dark, warm and leathery, with smoky, tar-like and faintly medicinal birch-tar facets. Beneath the animalic depth sit sweeter tones of dried fruit, hay and vanilla, plus a whiff of new leather and woodsmoke. Heavily diluted, it turns soft, suede-like and skin-warm.

A base-note fixative bringing leather, animalic warmth and long tenacity. It anchors chypres, fougeres and leather scents, pairing with birch tar, labdanum, oakmoss and tobacco. Castoreum builds the hide of leather scents, the warm drydown of classic orientals and the smoky depth of vintage Russian-leather styles.
Good to know
Beavers eat willow and poplar bark rich in salicin, giving castoreum a salicylate, almost aspirin-like character. It has long been used as a flavouring material as well as a perfumery one, though falling use and ethical concerns mean genuine castoreum is now rare and mostly synthetic.
Benzoin
Warm vanilla balsam wept from a tapped tree
What it is
Benzoin is a balsamic resin from Styrax trees of Southeast Asia. Siam benzoin comes from Styrax tonkinensis (Laos, Vietnam), Sumatra benzoin from Styrax benzoin (Indonesia). Incisions in the bark make the tree exude a gum that hardens over months into reddish tears, processed into resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and balsamic with a pronounced vanilla character and powdery, ambery, faintly cinnamic facets. Siam is rounder and more vanillic; Sumatra is smokier with a cinnamon-styrax edge. It opens soft and creamy, then dries into a cozy, resinous, almost caramelized sweetness.
In perfumery
A warm base note and gentle fixative lending sweetness, body and a vanillic glow to amber accords. It blends with labdanum, vanilla, tonka and incense, smoothing orientals and gourmands. Benzoin is a defining warmth in golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
Benzoin gave its name to benzoic acid and, through it, to the chemical term benzene. The word itself traces to the Arabic luban jawi, "frankincense of Java." The resin never flows on its own; every tear is the tree healing an incision deliberately cut into its bark.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and animal warmth
What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Immortelle
Sun-baked hay laced with maple and curry
What it is
Immortelle is Helichrysum italicum, a small silvery Mediterranean shrub nicknamed the curry plant, growing wild on rocky scrubland in Corsica, the Balkans and southern France. Its clustered yellow flower heads, which keep their colour when dried, are steam-distilled for an essential oil or solvent-extracted into an absolute.
How it smells
The note opens warm and herbal, like sun-warmed hay and dried chamomile, with a sharp curry-leaf edge. As it settles, sweeter facets surface: burnt maple syrup, caramel, tobacco, liquorice and tree sap. The drydown turns rounder and honeyed, faintly fenugreek-spiced and slightly medicinal underneath.
In perfumery
Used in the heart and base, immortelle lends a tobacco-tea-liqueur warmth and natural depth, pairing with woods, leather, lavender and amber in fougere and oriental builds. It anchors the reference maple-immortelle scents, and elsewhere is set against lavender for a sweeter, aromatic contrast.
Good to know
The name means everlasting: cut flowers hold their shape and colour for years without water, which earned the plant a place in ancient funeral wreaths. Corsican distillation yields are tiny, so true immortelle absolute ranks among the costlier naturals on a perfumer's bench.
Vanilla
The warm sweet heart of comfort itself
What it is
Vanilla comes from the cured seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America, now grown mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia; the vanilla of Tahiti is a different species, Vanilla x tahitensis. Green pods are picked unripe, then blanched, sweated in the sun and slow-dried over months until they darken and develop their aroma and vanillin.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and creamy, with a balsamic depth recalling custard, caramel and dried fruit, a faint smoky tobacco-like edge sitting underneath. It opens soft and gourmand, then dries into a powdery resinous warmth that clings close to skin and reads richer than synthetic vanillin alone.
In perfumery
A base note prized for richness and lasting warmth, vanilla rounds sharp edges and anchors oriental and gourmand compositions. It pairs naturally with tonka, amber, sandalwood and spice. Many of the most enduring oriental and tobacco fragrances build their core around it.
Good to know
Vanilla ranks among the costliest spices because each orchid flower opens for one day and must be hand-pollinated, a technique devised in 1841 by Edmond Albius, a twelve-year-old enslaved boy on Réunion. Most commercial vanilla flavor now relies on synthetic vanillin.
Styrax
Warm balsam, soft leather and skin-like resin
What it is
Styrax, also called storax, is a fragrant balsam exuded from the wounded bark of the Liquidambar tree, chiefly Liquidambar orientalis in Turkey and L. styraciflua in the Americas. The grey, sticky raw balsam is purified, then solvent-extracted into a resinoid or absolute and distilled into an essential oil for perfumery.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and balsamic with a leathery, slightly smoky edge and a hint of cinnamon and pine. Beneath runs a soft, almost vanillic, skin-like warmth. It opens resinous and a touch medicinal, then dries down rich and ambery, persistent and clinging like cured leather.
In perfumery
A base note and quality fixative giving warmth, leather and animalic depth. It pairs with labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, incense and florals in orientals and chypres. It lends body to classic leathers and ambers, and is threaded through 1920s landmarks of the genre.
Good to know
The name causes confusion: this storax comes from Liquidambar, not from trees of the genus Styrax, which instead yield benzoin. Storax has been traded since antiquity as incense and medicine, burned in temples and valued for its skin-like, almost human warmth.
Costus
Warm hair and skin, animalic and unsettling
What it is
Costus root oil is steam-distilled or solvent-extracted from the dried roots of Saussurea costus, a tall thistle-like herb of the high Himalayas, known in India as kuth. The aged roots are processed to yield a thick, dark, intensely odorous oil rich in sesquiterpene lactones.
How it smells
