Prince of Persia
The Story
Prince of Persia is a tribute to Persian majesty rendered through spice, rose, and oud. At its center sits Black Thai Kinam Oud 2011, one of the rarest aromatics in perfumery, dosed at a full gram per bottle. Two rose ottos define the heart: one rich and wine-like, the other soft and luminous, their contrast giving the composition unusual depth.

Perfumery rose comes mainly from two species: Rosa damascena, grown in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses and in Turkey, and Rosa centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise into the morning, then either water-distilled and cohobated into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deeper, redder absolute via a waxy concrete.
How it smells
Rich, fresh and unmistakably floral, with honeyed sweetness and a green, dewy lift. Beneath sit spicy, fruity and faintly tea-like facets, and in the absolute a darker, jammy depth. Rose otto opens crisp and bright; the absolute reads warmer, smokier and more sensual.
In perfumery
A heart note of extraordinary range, rose adds body, freshness and natural floral richness, blending with almost anything. It anchors the chypre and floral families and pairs with oud, patchouli and violet. It is the showpiece of countless classic floral and chypre compositions.
Good to know
It takes roughly three to four thousand kilograms of hand-picked blossoms to distill a single kilogram of rose otto, which helps explain why the oil can rival precious metals in price. Picking begins before sunrise and runs into the morning, while the flower still holds its oil.
White Rose
The cooler, greener cousin of the damask
What it is
White Rose points to Rosa × alba, the literal white rose, not a pale label for ordinary damask. It is an ancient natural hybrid of debated parentage, most likely R. gallica crossed with a R. canina lineage, with bluish-green foliage and double white blooms, cultivated for oil almost exclusively in Bulgaria, where it is the second commercial oil-rose after the famous pink damask. It is harvested and steam-distilled in the same brief late-spring window, worked by all-natural distillers as both a true otto and an absolute.
How it smells
This is the lightest, coolest, most translucent of the great distilled roses: fresh white petals, green crushed leaf and stem, and a honeyed black-tea facet rather than syrup. There is a soft clove-bud spiciness and a clean dewy lift exactly where damask would turn dark, jammy and overripe. Naturalness shows in the airiness; it reads silvery and slightly waxy-petalled, like a rose smelled at dawn before the heat releases its sugar.
In perfumery
Perfumers use alba as the bright, transparent rose voice: it is the rose alba otto behind a chilled opening, paired with white pepper and frankincense rather than oud and amber. Many-rose blends stack several rose origins (Afghan, Georgian, Bulgarian otto and Indian absolute, plus a Thai white-rose water), so the green, tea-like white-rose lift sits on top while heavier damascena carries the heart. Because alba is delicate and volatile, a few real drops perfume the topnotes without damask's weight.
Good to know
True Rosa alba otto is lower-yielding than damask (roughly twice the flowers per kilo of oil), so a natural alba note is a quiet marker of a serious, ingredient-driven house. If you find Taif or Bulgarian damask too rich, sweet or wine-like, alba is the rose for you: cleaner, greener, more skin-close. In such compositions it usually sits beside natural musks and aged sandalwood, which can warm and slightly deepen how the white rose reads on skin.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.
Good to know
Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. IFRA caps how much expressed bergamot oil a leave-on product may carry, so perfumers either dose within that limit or reach for a furocoumarin-free (FCF) grade.
Nutmeg
Warm baking spice with a hidden narcotic edge
What it is
The dried seed kernel of Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree native to Indonesia's Banda Islands and now grown in Grenada and Sri Lanka. The hard brown seed sits inside an apricot-like fruit, wrapped in red mace. It is ground for spice or steam-distilled for oil.
How it smells
Warm, dry and spicy-sweet, with a soft woody body and a faint terpenic, almost camphoraceous lift on top. Beneath the familiar baking-spice warmth runs a slightly resinous, balsamic depth and a cool medicinal edge. It feels cozy yet subtly sharp and pine-like.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice adding warmth, lift and a gourmand-ambery glow without overt sweetness. It pairs with vanilla, tobacco, lavender and woods. Nutmeg anchors spice-and-ginger pairings and forms the classic warm-spice signature of barbershop fougeres.
Good to know
Nutmeg contains myristicin, a compound that is mildly psychoactive and toxic in large doses. In the 1600s the Banda Islands were the world's only source, and control of that trade sparked colonial wars between the Dutch, Portuguese and English.
Bulgarian Rose
The fresh dawn breath of the Rose Valley
What it is
The flower of Rosa damascena, grown chiefly around Kazanlak in central Bulgaria's Rose Valley. Blossoms are hand-picked from before sunrise into the morning, then either steam-distilled into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deep-red absolute. Roughly three to four tonnes of blossoms yield a single kilogram of otto.
How it smells
Bright, dewy and honeyed, with a green lemony lift on top over a spicy, velvety heart. Compared with Turkish rose it reads fresher and clearer. As it settles, a faint clove-like warmth and a waxy, black-tea softness surface beneath the petals.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for transparency and natural radiance, paired with patchouli, oud, sandalwood or fruity notes like lychee. The otto can crystallise in cool weather. It anchors many of the great rose-centered compositions, lending lifelike floral depth.
Good to know
Harvest runs only three to four weeks from mid-May into June, and pickers work before sunrise because the day's heat evaporates the volatile oils. That tiny, weather-dependent window, plus the tonnes of blossoms needed per kilo, makes rose otto one of perfumery's costliest naturals.
Blue Lotus
The sacred water lily of pharaohs and dreams
What it is
Blue lotus is Nymphaea caerulea, the blue Egyptian water lily, a star-petalled flower rooted in Nile mud and ponds across North and East Africa. The blossoms are solvent-extracted with hexane into a concrete, then ethanol-washed into a thick, dark absolute that preserves their delicate aromatic compounds.
How it smells
Sweet and honeyed with a green, watery floralcy and soft fruity, lychee-like undertones, edged by an earthy, slightly spicy warmth and a waxy, powdery backbone. It opens cool and aquatic like a pond at dawn, then dries down resinous and balsamic, more meditative than bright.

Orris Root
Cool powdery violet wrung from patient roots
What it is
The rhizome of iris, chiefly Iris pallida and Iris germanica, grown mainly in Tuscany and Morocco. After flowering the root is unearthed, hand-cleaned, then dried and aged three to five years so its scent compounds form, before being ground and steam-distilled into waxy orris butter.
How it smells
Cool, dry and powdery, with a delicate violet-like sweetness wrapped around a faintly earthy, carrot-and-suede quality. It reads silvery and almost edible, like iris petals over fresh bread or rice powder. Refined and restrained, it lingers as a soft, makeup-like haze.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material prized for its powdery elegance and quiet diffusion, contributing the irones that give a violet-suede signature. It pairs with rose, violet, leather and musk. It defines the powdery-iris signature of countless modern masculines and iris-forward classics.
Good to know
The years-long aging needed to develop irones makes orris one of perfumery's costliest naturals: refined orris butter can reach tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram, since hundreds of kilos of root yield barely one. The scent lives in the root, not the iris flower.
Cedar
Dry sharpened pencils and sun-warmed timber
What it is
Cedar in perfumery comes mainly from the Virginia and Texas "cedars" of the Juniperus genus, with true Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) a smaller second source. Juniper chips and sawmill shavings are steam-distilled into an oil rich in cedrol and cedrene, while Atlas oil runs instead on himachalene sesquiterpenes.
How it smells
Dry, woody and resinous, recalling freshly sharpened pencils and cedar-lined closets. Atlas cedar leans warm, smoky and balsamic; Virginia cedar reads sharper and cleaner. It opens crisp and pencil-like, then settles into a soft, sawdust-warm, faintly sweet timber that holds for hours.

Good to know
Most perfumery "cedar" is not botanical cedar at all but juniper; true Cedrus and the unrelated Juniperus share a name through scent, not lineage. Cedarwood oil was burned in ancient Egyptian embalming and used to scent tombs, coffins and ships' timbers.
Jade Wood
A dry Australian cypress that anchors the base
What it is
Jade Wood is a trade name rather than a botanical one. The material sold under it is an essential oil steam distilled from the wood of Callitris glaucophylla, the white cypress pine, a conifer that grows across inland Australia. No tree carries the name jade wood in botanical literature.
How it smells
Dry and woody, with a lactonic softness that reads closer to warm milk than to sap. Balsamic and faintly resinous beneath, with little sweetness. Suppliers place it near blue cypress, with quieter echoes of sandalwood and massoia bark. Some houses describe a cooler impression instead: crisp and light rather than dark.
In perfumery
It belongs in the base and works as a fixative, holding a composition together rather than announcing itself. Perfumers reach for it in incense and smoke accords, and beside agarwood and sandalwood, where it extends the woods without crowding them. It also serves as a more affordable stand-in for blue cypress.
Good to know
The tree is better known as a timber than as a perfume material. Its heartwood resists termites, an effect researchers have traced to sesquiterpene compounds in the wood, and it is milled for flooring, fencing and joinery across Australia. The name has no connection to the jade plant, a separate note.
Cypress
Dry evergreen breath of the Mediterranean coast
What it is
Cypress oil comes from Cupressus sempervirens, the columnar Mediterranean evergreen lining hills from Italy to the Levant. Fresh needles, twigs and small branches are steam-distilled, ideally in autumn when oil content peaks, yielding a pale yellow to greenish oil at roughly one percent of the plant weight.
How it smells
It opens crisp and terpenic, brighter and drier than pine, with a faint camphor edge. The heart turns clean and woody-green, less sweet than cedar, threaded with a smoky-mineral coolness. The drydown settles into resinous, slightly herbaceous wood, airy rather than heavy.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart modifier prized for dry structure and lift. It sharpens citrus openings, builds coniferous and fougere accords, and lends austere backbone to chypres and aldehydic florals. Some woody compositions place it front and center, and it threads through many incense and forest compositions.
Good to know
Across the Mediterranean and Persia the tall, slender cypress has long symbolized mourning and eternity, planted in cemeteries because its rot-resistant wood seemed to outlast death. Ancient Egyptians carved that durable timber into sarcophagi, and the scent still reads as solemn and meditative.
Atlas Cedar
Dry mountain wood, sweet balsam and pencil shavings
What it is
A true conifer wood from Cedrus atlantica, native to the Atlas and Rif Mountains of Morocco and Algeria at high altitude. The essential oil is steam-distilled from chipped wood, sawdust and shavings, much of it upcycled from the lumber trade rather than from freshly felled trees.
How it smells
Warm, dry and woody with a sweet balsamic core, often likened to sharpened pencils and freshly cut timber. A camphoraceous, faintly smoky-resinous lift sits over an earthy base. Drier and more austere than soft, creamy Virginian cedar, it dries down clean and tenacious.
In perfumery
A workhorse base note giving structure, dryness and lasting woody warmth, also valued as a fixative. It pairs with rose, vetiver, patchouli, oakmoss and labdanum, underpinning chypre and woody-oriental builds. It contributes to many classic masculine and ambery wood compositions.
Good to know
The oil is rich in himachalene sesquiterpenes, with beta-himachalene the dominant component at roughly a third of the oil. Cedrus atlantica was listed Endangered by the IUCN in 2013, so distilling oil from sawmill offcuts has become the more responsible feedstock.
Thai Kinam Oud
The cooling, sappy summit of all agarwood
What it is
Genuine single-origin oud oil distilled from Thai agarwood of kinam (kyara) grade, the rarest, most resin-saturated heartwood the Aquilaria tree produces, traditionally regarded as the apex of all oud. Kinam is graded on the character of its resin rather than on density (plenty of ordinary sinking-grade wood is not kinam), and it is that resin character, not weight, that makes the grade vanishingly scarce and ruinously expensive. It is built around an aged, dark expression of the material (a 'Black Thai Kinam' oil) where years of maturation have rounded the distillate into something balsamic and lacquered. This is a true natural distillation of a coveted, slow-grown resin, not a reconstructed oud accord.
How it smells
The signature is a cooling, almost mentholated brightness laid over sweet, sappy resin: agarwood that smells of cold temple incense, dark lacquered wood, and clean honeyed tree-sap rather than rot. A green, faintly camphorous sharpness at the top lifts the heavy balsamic base, with whispers of grape skin and honeydew melon instead of cloying over-ripe fruit. The aged kinam character adds a velvety, incense-like gravity and a soft sweetness in the drydown that lingers like old resin warmed by skin. Good to know
Do not expect the barnyard 'oud' most Western noses know; kinam is the opposite of funky, and its appeal is its purity and cool sweetness. Authentic Thai kinam oil is extraordinarily expensive and effectively unrepeatable, since each batch comes from finite, aged wood that cannot be re-sourced. Apply a single dab to warm skin and let it bloom; this is a slow, contemplative oud meant to be experienced over hours, not sprayed.
Mongolian Musk
Sweet, chocolatey, earthy grade of deer musk
What it is
Mongolian musk is genuine deer musk from the Siberian musk deer of the Mongolian and southern Siberian mountain taiga, a CITES-listed regional grade distinct from the prized Tonkin musk of Vietnam. Like all real deer musk it is the dried pod secretion of the male animal, collected as dark grains and tinctured patiently by artisanal natural perfumers.
How it smells
Connoisseurs describe a sweet, almost chocolatey character laced with earthy, spicy and resinous depth, a sandy ambergris-like warmth turned more animalic. It is funkier and muddier than the prettier, more floral Tonkin profile, yet calmer and softer than the darkest, most feral Siberian musk.
In perfumery
Its weight and animalic richness make it a powerful fixative and a centerpiece note in all-natural compositions, where a trace lends brooding sensuality. A handful of artisanal natural houses have offered Mongolian musk tinctures, often pairing them with oud, whose smoky resin its earthy backbone complements beautifully.
Good to know
Tonkin has long been judged the finest musk, with steppe musks read as rougher and more barnyard, too funky for some daily wear. As real deer musk it is CITES restricted and used only by tiny artisanal natural houses. Most so-called musk on the market is unrelated synthetic material.
Civet
Animal warmth that makes flowers bloom indecent
What it is
A glandular paste from the African civet, a nocturnal cat-like mammal secreting it from a perineal pouch, historically scraped out by hand and tinctured in alcohol. Modern perfumery instead uses synthetic civetone, a large-ring ketone whose macrocyclic structure was elucidated by Leopold Ruzicka in 1926.
How it smells
Raw and undiluted it is shockingly fecal, pungent and indolic, edged with skatole and sour butter. Diluted to traces it turns warm, honeyed and slightly leathery, with a tobacco hum and skin-like radiance. The shift from repellent to alluring happens entirely through dilution.
In perfumery
A base-note fixative valued for radiance and carnal warmth, lending florals a living, skin-like glow. Classic alongside jasmine and rose in animalic chypres and orientals. Trace civet shaped many vintage aldehydic florals and ambery orientals before synthetic civetone displaced the natural material.
Good to know
Civet farming confines wild-caught animals so the gland can be scraped repeatedly, and it continues on a reduced scale in Ethiopia even though synthetic civetone has displaced the natural material almost everywhere in perfumery. This perfumery civet is not the Asian palm civet behind kopi luwak coffee, a different animal in the same family.
Mysore Sandalwood
The creamy gold standard of fragrant wood
What it is
Heartwood of Santalum album, a slow-growing semi-parasitic tree historically prized from the Mysore region of Karnataka, India. The dense inner wood and roots are chipped and steam-distilled. Fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood, which begins to scent the wood at around ten years and deepens with age; a tree is seldom worth taking before fifteen or twenty.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a rounded woody-sweet body and a faint sour-buttery edge that turns almost lactic. Warm rosy and balsamic facets sit underneath. It opens smooth and unfolds slowly, drying into a quiet, skin-like, persistent woodiness without sharpness or smoke.
In perfumery
A base note valued for long, smooth tenacity and its power to fix and round other materials. It pairs with rose, jasmine, violet and oud. Mysore-rich sandalwood defines the great vintage milky-woody orientals and lends a creamy woody heart to countless smooth, skin-like compositions.
Good to know
Indian sandalwood was over-harvested nearly to collapse; standing trees and trade fall under strict Indian government license and auction control. Genuine aged Mysore oil has grown rare and costly, pushing perfumers toward plantation-grown Australian Santalum album and synthetics like Javanol.

The opening throws pepper, bergamot, and spiced rose forward with considerable force, the nutmeg adding a dry, almost smoky warmth.
