Mathew Schmuelian spent years collecting natural, artisanal perfumes rich in musk, oud and ambergris before he made one. The habit turned into buying raw materials and macerating musk, and in 2022 he bottled his first release, Lost Tribe Hope You Like It, a floral of red champaca, frangipani and osmanthus in a batch of about sixteen. Those three flowers grow from the antlers of the deer in the Lost Tribe logo.

Everything in a Lost Tribe bottle is natural, animalics included: musk, civet, castoreum and ambergris, pale ambergris for bright blends and dark for heavy ones. Ideas come from old perfumes he wants to rebuild in naturals, desserts from his childhood and suggestions from his wife, and each scent is named before it is made. Batches stay small because some ouds and animalics can never be bought again.

Lost Tribe Prince of Persia carries 2011 Black Thai kinam oud, a full gram even in the smallest bottle, and Lost Tribe Dubai sets a blackcurrant and grape accord against iris. Lost Tribe Lost Lotus balances blue lotus, osmanthus and frankincense, Lost Tribe Neon Palms puts pineapple and raspberry over a chypre, and Lost Tribe The Hamptons ties raspberry and yuzu to civet. Lost Tribe ASH v3 is smoke and woods with almost no flowers. Lost Tribe Pan's Labyrinth v1, a fougère made with the perfumer Rajesh Balkrishnan, took ten versions.
