Amouage
Cristal & Gold Man
Aldehydes and honey over Omani frankincense, then a full aldehydic-floral heart, then a base that does not behave itself: civet, ambergris and labdanum carried on guaiac and patchouli. This is Gold Man reopened forty years later and allowed to keep its claws.
The Story
For its fortieth anniversary the house did not launch something new. It went back. The original 1983 bottle moulds were found in the cellars of the Cristallerie Waltersperger in Normandy, the glassmaker Amouage used at the beginning, and 500 flacons were hand-blown from them in crystal with gold-plated detailing. Each arrives in a lacquered wooden case assembled by an artisan at the Muscat manufacture and dusted with fine gold powder. Amouage calls them the first Amouage crystal bottles ever to exist.
Alexandra Carlin reworked the juice. Amouage credits Guy Robert with the original aroma and Carlin with this reading of it, and the difference from the Woman is real rather than cosmetic: where hers closes on bourbon vanilla, his goes to patchouli, guaiac wood and civet.
Amouage was founded in Muscat in 1983 at the request of Sultan Qaboos, and its first two fragrances were composed by Guy Robert, the nose behind Calèche and Dioressence. They were not sold at first but presented to visiting dignitaries, which is where the house's gift of kings reputation comes from. Those two originals were later renamed Gold Man and Gold Woman.

Animalic
Warm skin, musk and muscle
A raw, body-warm muskiness that reads of skin, hair, and fur, sometimes sweet and powdery, sometimes sharp and faintly feral. It feels primal and intimate, blurring the line between perfume and the person wearing it.
Musky
Warm breath of clean skin
A soft, slightly animalic warmth that smells like clean skin and freshly dried laundry, intimate and faintly sweet. It hums quietly underneath a fragrance, lending a sensual, second-skin closeness that feels personal and lingering.
Amber
Golden resin glowing warm
A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Powdery
Soft hush of dressed skin
A velvety, slightly dry softness of iris root, violet, and fine talc, like face powder or clean linen warmed by skin. It feels intimate, refined, and nostalgic, blurring a fragrance into a gentle, cushioned haze.
Aldehydic
soapy sparkle and cool lift
A fizzy, abstract brightness that smells of clean laundry, warm ironing, and a champagne-like effervescence rising off the skin. It adds airy, soapy luminosity and a retro elegance, lifting florals into something polished and luminous.
Fresh
Clean air after cool water
A crisp, transparent brightness that suggests cool water, washed skin, and open air, often laced with a zesty or aquatic lift. It feels clean and weightless, instantly cooling and uncomplicated, like stepping outside after a rain.
Aldehydes
Sparkling waxy lift that built modern perfume
What it is
A family of organic molecules; in perfumery the term usually means fatty aliphatic aldehydes, carbon chains roughly eight to thirteen atoms long, labelled by length such as C-10 or C-12. First identified in rose oil and citrus zest, they are now almost entirely produced synthetically.
How it smells
Bright, abstract and effervescent. The fatty aldehydes read as waxy, soapy and candle-like with metallic, citrus and floral facets, evoking clean laundry, hot ironing and orange peel. They flash intensely on top, then lift and aerate everything beneath them like sparkling light.
In perfumery
Top notes used in tiny doses to add radiance, volume and clean shimmer above florals. C-10, C-11 and C-12 form the classic aldehydic trio. They define the snowy sparkle of the great aldehydic florals, the genre-defining templates that built an entire family of perfumes.
Good to know
Their fame is partly accident: a perfumer reportedly overdosed the aldehydes in a 1921 trial, and the client chose that very overdosed sample. The same family of aldehydes is released when a candle flame is blown out, the source of that waxy smell.
Honey
Golden nectar, warm waxy and faintly animal
What it is
A natural product made by bees from flower nectar, concentrated in the hive into a thick golden syrup whose scent reflects the flowers foraged. In perfume it is usually built from aroma-chemicals like phenylacetic acid and from beeswax absolute, since raw honey itself resists clean extraction.
How it smells
Sweet, dense and viscous, with warm beeswax, dried fruit and a distinctly animalic, almost urinous undertone from phenylacetic acid. It can read floral and powdery or leathery and sour depending on dosage. The richness sits heavy, golden and very slightly fermented.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material adding warmth, sweetness and a sensual animalic lift. It pairs with tobacco, orange blossom, immortelle, beeswax and leather. Some niche compositions explore its raw, woody and feral side, while many tobacco and oriental scents use honey to round their sweetness.
Good to know
The animalic, almost feral edge of honey comes largely from phenylacetic acid, which smells of both honey and stale sweat and even hints at civet. Used heavily, a honey note turns surprisingly dirty and barnyard-like, which is why perfumers dose it with great restraint.
Frankincense
Sacred smoke distilled from desert tree tears
What it is
Frankincense, or olibanum, is the dried gum resin of Boswellia trees, with Boswellia sacra of Oman, Yemen and Somalia among the most prized. The bark is scored and weeps a milky sap that hardens over weeks into golden tears, later steam-distilled or solvent-extracted for perfumery.
How it smells
Fresh, resinous and luminous, with a clean coniferous-citrus brightness from alpha-pinene and limonene over a dry, balsamic woody base. It carries a cool, peppery, almost lemony lift, then settles into the warm, dusty incense smoke familiar from churches and temples.
In perfumery
Used in heart and base, it adds a meditative, smoky resinous spine and a soaring transparency. It pairs with myrrh, rose, oud and labdanum, and lifts heavy oriental accords. It centers many incense-built compositions and defines the cathedral-incense theme.
Good to know
Frankincense has been traded for over five thousand years and once moved along Arabian incense routes at prices rivaling gold. Wild Boswellia populations are now declining from over-tapping, drought and grazing, raising real concern over the long-term sustainability of the harvest.
Neroli
Bittersweet orange blossom distilled into white light
What it is
Neroli is the steam-distilled essential oil of the fresh white flowers of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium subspecies amara, also called bigarade or Seville orange. Blossoms are hand-picked at dawn and distilled the same day. Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt are the major sources.
How it smells
Bright, clean and floral with a green, faintly bitter edge and a honeyed metallic shimmer often likened to freshly ironed linen. It opens crisp and citrus-cool, then settles into soft, waxy petal warmth, far fresher and lighter than the heady orange blossom absolute from the same tree.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note prized for lift and radiance in colognes and florals. It pairs with bergamot, petitgrain, jasmine and musk, and anchors the classic eau de cologne structure. It shines in bright neroli-forward colognes and sun-drenched citrus-floral compositions.
Good to know
The name traces to Anne Marie Orsini, seventeenth-century princess of Nerola near Rome, who scented her gloves and bathwater with the oil and made it fashionable across Europe. Distilling one kilo of neroli takes roughly a tonne of hand-picked blossoms, keeping it among perfumery's costlier naturals.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bittersweet edge
What it is
Bergamot is a small citrus fruit, Citrus bergamia, grown almost entirely along the Calabrian coast of southern Italy. The aromatic oil sits in glands in the rind of the unripe green-yellow fruit and is cold-pressed mechanically from the peel rather than distilled, preserving its fresh brightness.
How it smells
Bright, zesty and green, a sweet citrus sparkle softened by a floral, almost tea-like smoothness. Underneath runs a faintly bitter, balsamic warmth that sets it apart from lemon or orange. It flashes lively on opening, then fades quickly into a soft, slightly spicy hum.
In perfumery
The classic top note, bergamot adds freshness and lift while blending sharp citrus into the heart. It defines eau de cologne and the fougère family, harmonizing with lavender, neroli and oakmoss. It opens countless modern fresh-floral compositions, and its oil gives Earl Grey tea its scent.
Good to know
Natural bergamot oil contains bergapten, a furocoumarin that makes skin highly sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. Modern perfumery uses bergapten-free (FCF) oil to meet IFRA safety limits, so most contemporary bergamot in fragrance is purified rather than raw cold-pressed oil.
Petitgrain
Bittersweet green of crushed orange leaves
What it is
Petitgrain is the essential oil steam-distilled from the leaves and young twigs of the bitter orange tree, Citrus aurantium, with the prized bigarade grade grown in Paraguay. The name, meaning little grain, recalls when distillers once used the tree's tiny unripe green fruits before switching to the foliage.
How it smells
Fresh, green and woody-floral, with a snapped-stem bitterness and a clean citrus-leaf brightness. The opening is sharp and dewy, almost herbal, edged with a soft orange-blossom sweetness inherited from neroli. As it dries it turns smoother and faintly soapy, leaving a cool, slightly bitter leafiness behind.
In perfumery
A classic top-to-heart note, petitgrain adds crisp green lift and a natural cologne signature, bridging citrus and floral. It pairs with neroli, lavender, bergamot and rosemary in eaux de cologne and fougeres, and helps build the bitter-green spine of countless aromatic colognes.
Good to know
A single bitter orange tree can yield three distinct perfumery materials: petitgrain from its leaves, neroli from its blossoms, and bigarade oil pressed from its fruit peel. Each smells markedly different, making the bitter orange one of the most generous single plants in a perfumer's palette.
Heliotrope
Powdered almonds, marzipan and warm vanilla skin
What it is
Heliotrope is named for Heliotropium arborescens, a purple garden flower, but the perfumery note is essentially synthetic. Its signature comes from heliotropin (piperonal), an aroma molecule first prepared in the 1860s and historically made from safrole or isosafrole, since the living flower yields no usable extract.
How it smells
Soft, sweet and powdery, dominated by bitter almond and marzipan with a creamy vanilla heart and a faint cherry-and-anise lift. It feels cosmetic and pillowy, like meringue dusted with face powder, opening tender and drying into a warm, milky, slightly spiced softness.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base note adding powdery sweetness, almond comfort and vintage softness. It pairs with vanilla, tonka, violet, iris and cherry, and underpins many gourmand and powdery florals. The classic heliotrope-and-anise showcases are early-twentieth-century powdery florals where it meets aniseed.
Good to know
Piperonal was christened heliotropin because its odor mimicked the flower, not because it was drawn from it, making it one of the oldest synthetics still in continuous use. It also flavors confectionery and once served as a fixative in fougeres before tighter usage limits arrived.
Jasmine
The heady white flower at perfumery's beating heart
What it is
Jasmine is the blossom of climbing shrubs in the olive family, chiefly Jasminum grandiflorum, grown in Egypt, India and Morocco, plus Jasminum sambac from India. The fragile flowers are hand-picked at dawn, solvent-extracted with hexane into a waxy concrete, then washed with ethanol to yield the absolute.
How it smells
A warm, lush white floral, sweet and honeyed with an animalic underside. Sambac leans fruity, tea-like and dense; grandiflorum reads creamier and greener on top. Both carry a heady, narcotic richness over a green-fruity opening, drying to a soft, skin-warm, faintly mushroomy-musky base.
In perfumery
A heart-note cornerstone, bridging citrus tops and woody bases while lending volume, sensuality and rounded floral body. It pairs with rose, tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and musk. Jasmine anchors many of the great classic florals and can stand alone as a radiant soliflore.
Good to know
Roughly eight thousand hand-picked flowers yield a single gram of absolute, ranking natural jasmine among the costliest perfume materials. Much of its depth comes from indole, a molecule smelling of mothballs or decay when concentrated, yet radiant and living in the trace amounts the flower naturally holds.
Damask Rose
The empress of roses, distilled at dawn
What it is
Damask rose is Rosa damascena, a hardy hybrid shrub cultivated mainly in Bulgaria's Rose Valley, Turkey's Isparta region and Iran. Petals are hand-picked before sunrise, then either steam-distilled into rose otto or solvent-extracted into rose absolute, each capturing a different facet of the bloom.
How it smells
Deep, honeyed and unmistakably rosy, with a green, dewy freshness up top and a spicy, almost peppery warmth beneath. The otto leans clean and waxy with a clove-like edge; the absolute is darker, jammier and more fruity. The drydown holds a soft, lingering floral sweetness.
In perfumery
A central heart note prized for body and roundness. It blends with oud, patchouli, geranium, saffron and fruity notes, anchoring oriental and chypre builds. Dark, jammy rose compositions showcase its richness, while countless rose soliflores lean on damascones for their lift.
Good to know
Roughly three to four tonnes of petals yield a single kilogram of rose otto, placing it among the costliest naturals. The damascones and damascenones, isolated from rose in the 1970s, became landmark aroma molecules that read as rosy at vanishingly small concentrations.
Ylang-Ylang
Sun-warmed tropical bloom, banana-cream and jasmine
What it is
The drooping yellow star-shaped flower of Cananga odorata, a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia and now grown mainly in the Comoros, Madagascar and Mayotte. Hand-picked blossoms are steam-distilled for fifteen to twenty hours, the run siphoned off in stages into grades from Extra to Third.
How it smells
Creamy, heady and warm: jasmine-like florals over a soft banana-custard sweetness, threaded with rubber, clove and narcissus. The Extra fraction is bright, fruity and spicy on top; later grades turn deeper, fattier and more medicinal, drying down to a rounded, slightly waxy floral.
In perfumery
A heart-note workhorse adding tropical richness and lift to floral and oriental compositions, bridging jasmine, rose and tuberose while softening citrus tops. It forms part of the floral bouquet of the great aldehydic classics, drives many a legendary floral, and underpins countless solar tiare blends.
Good to know
The name traces to the Tagalog ilang-ilang, commonly glossed as flower of flowers, reaching European perfumery via Spanish. In Indonesia the blossoms are traditionally scattered over the beds of newlyweds. A single tree fruits for decades, with the most fragrant flowers picked at dawn while still cool.
Orris Root
Cool powdery violet wrung from patient roots
What it is
The rhizome of iris, chiefly Iris pallida and Iris germanica, grown mainly in Tuscany and Morocco. After flowering the root is unearthed, hand-cleaned, then dried and aged three to five years so its scent compounds form, before being ground and steam-distilled into waxy orris butter.
How it smells
Cool, dry and powdery, with a delicate violet-like sweetness wrapped around a faintly earthy, carrot-and-suede quality. It reads silvery and almost edible, like iris petals over fresh bread or rice powder. Refined and restrained, it lingers as a soft, makeup-like haze.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material prized for its powdery elegance and quiet diffusion, contributing the irones that give a violet-suede signature. It pairs with rose, violet, leather and musk. It defines the powdery-iris signature of countless modern masculines and iris-forward classics.
Good to know
The years-long aging needed to develop irones makes orris one of perfumery's costliest naturals: refined orris butter can reach tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram, since hundreds of kilos of root yield barely one. The scent lives in the root, not the iris flower.
Civet
Animal warmth that makes flowers bloom indecent
What it is
A glandular paste from the African civet, a nocturnal cat-like mammal secreting it from a perineal pouch, historically scraped out by hand and tinctured in alcohol. Modern perfumery instead uses synthetic civetone, a large-ring ketone whose macrocyclic structure was elucidated by Leopold Ruzicka in 1926.
How it smells
Raw and undiluted it is shockingly fecal, pungent and indolic, edged with skatole and sour butter. Diluted to traces it turns warm, honeyed and slightly leathery, with a tobacco hum and skin-like radiance. The shift from repellent to alluring happens entirely through dilution.
In perfumery
A base-note fixative valued for radiance and carnal warmth, lending florals a living, skin-like glow. Classic alongside jasmine and rose in animalic chypres and orientals. Trace civet shaped many vintage aldehydic florals and ambery orientals before synthetic civetone displaced the natural material.
Good to know
Traditional civet farming caged animals in cruel conditions to harvest the paste, driving a near-total switch to synthetic civetone on ethical grounds. This perfumery civet is unrelated to the Asian palm civet behind kopi luwak coffee, a separate species entirely.
Ambergris
Sea-aged whale gold breathing warm salt air
What it is
Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the gut of the sperm whale, thought to coat the indigestible squid beaks it swallows. Produced by perhaps one percent of whales, it is expelled and drifts for years at sea, oxidizing under sun and salt before washing ashore as lumps.
How it smells
Fresh ambergris is fecal and marine; aged, it turns sweet, animalic and softly mineral. The scent is warm and skin-like, with tobacco, dry seaweed, old wood and a salty, faintly sweet musk. It reads less as a sharp odor than as warmth, diffusion and breath.
In perfumery
A prized base note and fixative, it lends warmth, diffusion and a luminous skin effect while slowing evaporation of lighter materials. Its key molecule is ambrein. Most fragrances now use synthetics like Ambroxan; rare real tinctures appear in bespoke work and vintage chypre and oriental compositions.
Good to know
Though salvageable in some countries, ambergris is illegal to collect, possess or sell in the United States and Australia, protected as a sperm-whale product under marine-mammal and endangered-species law. Single boulder-sized finds have sold elsewhere for tens of thousands of dollars, earning the nickname floating gold.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
In perfumery
A foundational base note and the natural backbone of most amber accords, usually built with vanilla and benzoin. A strong fixative, it deepens chypres, orientals and leathers and pairs with rose, oakmoss and incense. It underpins many golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
In antiquity labdanum was combed from the matted beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had browsed through cistus thickets, then raked off with a toothed tool called a ladanisterion. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials, predating distillation by millennia.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown mainly in Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Sandalwood
Creamy meditative woods that breathe in slowly
What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.
In perfumery
A base note valued as both scent and fixative, sandalwood lends creaminess, warmth and a meditative softness that binds compositions together. It pairs beautifully with rose, jasmine, vetiver and spice. Many meditative woody and incense fragrances celebrate it at their heart.
Good to know
Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Plantations of Santalum album grown near Kununurra in Western Australia now sustainably recreate the original creamy profile.
Vetiver
Cool damp earth pulled from tangled roots
What it is
Vetiver is a tall tropical bunchgrass, Chrysopogon zizanioides, native to India and now grown mainly in Haiti, Java, and Réunion. The prized part is its dense network of fibrous underground roots, which are dug up, washed, dried, and steam-distilled into a thick amber-green essential oil.
How it smells
Cool, damp earth and freshly cut grass over a woody, rooty base. Haitian oil reads smooth, smoky, and faintly hazelnut-sweet; Java leans darker and more leathery. Beneath sit dry cedar, grapefruit-like bitterness, and a persistent green minerality that lingers for hours as it dries down.
In perfumery
A base note valued for tenacity, grounding earthiness, and natural fixative power. It anchors chypres and fougères, pairing with citrus, leather, and tobacco. Many vetiver soliflores are built around it, while its smokier, ashier side is showcased beside cypress and cedar.
Good to know
Haiti supplies roughly half the world's vetiver oil, most of it grown by smallholder farmers. The same deep roots that perfume a bottle are planted on hillsides worldwide as living barriers, gripping soil against erosion and stabilizing slopes where little else will hold.
Guaiac Wood
Smoldering rosewood from the arid Gran Chaco
What it is
Guaiac wood oil comes from Bulnesia sarmientoi, a slow-growing hardwood of the Gran Chaco across Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia. Chipped heartwood and sawdust are steam-distilled into a pale amber, waxy oil that solidifies at room temperature and melts close to skin warmth.
How it smells
Warm, smoky and balsamic, like a smoldering ember rather than open flame. A soft, sweet woodiness carries a distinct tea-rose facet, with powdery, peppery and faintly tar-like nuances. It dries down rounded and quietly creamy, blurring the line between wood and gentle incense.
In perfumery
A base note valued as much for fixative power as for scent, extending and grounding a blend. It rounds rough woods and smoky leathers, pairing with rose, vetiver and tobacco. Its hushed smokiness threads through many modern niche woody and oud-style compositions.
Good to know
Bulnesia sarmientoi has been on CITES Appendix II since 2010, so logs, extracts and oil need permits as overharvesting threatens the species. Sold as Argentine lignum vitae, it is a substitute for true lignum vitae, the unrelated Guaiacum genus listed by CITES decades earlier.
Fragrance Character
Animalic and musky lead by a wide margin, with amber and a powdery orris softness behind them and just enough aldehyde to keep the opening lifted. Reviewers read it as a muted woody chypre, a more natural and more elegant Gold Man that lets the frankincense show through.
Longevity
