The Story
Dorade is named for the yacht launched in 1929 whose design changed offshore racing, and it was made as a Harrods exclusive for the Sea Stars collection. The maritime reference is structural rather than decorative, salt and air held over a warm base.
Woody

An evergreen tree of the genus Eucalyptus, native to Australia and now grown across the Mediterranean, China, India and South America. Santolina
Silver Mediterranean shrub, bitter and sun-baked
What it is
Santolina, or cotton lavender, is a low aromatic evergreen shrub of the daisy family, Santolina chamaecyparissus, native to the western Mediterranean. Despite its common name it is unrelated to true lavender. Its silvery feathery foliage and button-yellow flower heads are steam-distilled into a sunshine-yellow essential oil.
How it smells
Strong, dry and camphoraceous with a bitter herbal edge recalling chamomile, yarrow and oregano. A fleeting red-berry brightness opens it, giving way to a green, slightly boozy and medicinal heart that stays sharp, penetrating and resinous through the dry down. Decidedly austere rather than sweet.

Lemon

Cold-pressed lemon oil contains photosensitizing furocoumarins that can trigger sun-induced skin burns, so perfumers often use a furocoumarin-free version. It also oxidizes quickly, turning harsh and turpentine-like, which is why citrus fragrances are notoriously hard to keep stable in the bottle.
Palisander Rosewood
Creamy rose-wood with a peachy glow
What it is
Essential oil of bois de rose, from Aniba rosaeodora, a tree of the laurel family native to the Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru and the Guianas. The name comes from the rosy scent of the freshly cut wood. Oil is steam-distilled from heartwood chips, with leaf distillation now allowing harvest without felling.
How it smells
Sweet, rosy and woody, soft and creamy from its very high linalool content, with a peachy, faintly spicy undertone. More floral than cedarwood and lighter than sandalwood, it opens fresh and slightly camphoraceous before settling into a smooth, warm, balsamic woodiness that feels rounded rather than dry.
In perfumery
A heart note that bridges florals and woods, contributing natural linalool, brightness and a creamy lift. It pairs with rose, jasmine, vetiver and citrus in chypres and woody florals. Brazilian rosewood oil was historically a core ingredient of many of the great aldehydic florals.
Good to know
Overharvesting for its linalool nearly drove Aniba rosaeodora to extinction, and it is now on CITES Appendix II, tightly restricting trade. Genuine rosewood oil is roughly 70 to 90 percent linalool, among the richest natural sources, though much is now replaced by ho wood oil or synthetic linalool.
Black Pepper
Dry heat that prickles and sharpens
What it is
The dried unripe berry of Piper nigrum, a tropical climbing vine grown in India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Madagascar. Green peppercorns are sun-dried until black and wrinkled, then steam-distilled to an essential oil; a cleaner, more diffusive material is obtained instead by CO2 extraction.
How it smells
Sharp, dry and warm-spicy with a crisp peppery bite that tingles the nose, wrapped in a fresh terpenic, woody-resinous tone and a faint citrus lift. The distilled oil reads bright and airy; the CO2 extract is rounder, warmer and closer to a freshly cracked peppercorn.
In perfumery
A top note adding lift, sparkle and a spicy snap to fresh, woody and fougere compositions, and a foil for rose, vetiver and amber in the heart. Some compositions build an entire scent around its dry, radiant crackle over cedar and woods.
Good to know
The prickly heat of whole pepper comes largely from piperine, a non-volatile compound that does not carry into the distilled oil, so black pepper essential oil smells aromatic but is not pungent on the tongue. Pepper was once so valued it served as currency and rent.
Clary Sage
Herbal ambery haze with a wine-like lift
What it is
An essential oil steam-distilled from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea, a tall biennial herb in the mint family native to the northern Mediterranean and now grown across Europe, Russia and the United States. A more tenacious concrete and absolute are also produced.
How it smells
Herbaceous and aromatic with a soft, sweet, ambery-balsamic warmth and a distinctive winey, tea-like nuance. It opens green, slightly nutty and hay-like over a clean musky undertone, then dries to a rounded warmth that feels both fresh and faintly tobacco-sweet.

A top-to-heart note adding aromatic freshness, wine-like roundness and a natural fixative warmth. A backbone of fougeres and lavender colognes, it pairs with lavender, bergamot, oakmoss and labdanum, lending its herbal glow to many barbershop and chypre classics.

Clary sage yields sclareol, the natural starting material for making Ambrox, the prized synthetic ambergris molecule, so this humble herb quietly underpins much of modern amber perfumery. The name clary derives from clear-eye, reflecting its historic folk use to soothe eye irritation.
Jasmine
The heady white flower at perfumery's beating heart
What it is
Jasmine is the blossom of climbing shrubs in the olive family, chiefly Jasminum grandiflorum, grown in Egypt, India and Morocco, plus Jasminum sambac from India. The fragile flowers are picked by hand from before first light into the morning, solvent-extracted with hexane into a waxy concrete, then washed with ethanol to yield the absolute.
How it smells
A warm, lush white floral, sweet and honeyed with an animalic underside. Sambac leans green, tea-like and luminous; grandiflorum reads fruitier and creamier, with more weight. Both carry a heady, narcotic richness over a green-fruity opening, drying to a soft, skin-warm, faintly mushroomy-musky base.
In perfumery
A heart-note cornerstone, bridging citrus tops and woody bases while lending volume, sensuality and rounded floral body. It pairs with rose, tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and musk. Jasmine anchors many of the great classic florals and can stand alone as a radiant soliflore.
Good to know
Roughly five thousand hand-picked flowers yield a single gram of absolute, ranking natural jasmine among the costliest perfume materials. Part of its depth comes from indole, a molecule that smells frankly animalic, close to decay, when concentrated, yet reads radiant and living at the small percentage the flower naturally holds.
Broom
Honeyed hay of the Mediterranean hillside
What it is
Genet absolute, from Spartium junceum, the Spanish broom whose bright yellow flowers cover Mediterranean hillsides and the garrigue. The blossoms are solvent-extracted with hexane into a concrete, then washed with alcohol into an absolute. Roughly a tonne of flowers yields under half a kilogram.
How it smells
Deep, sweet and honeyed, with a warm hay-like, coumarinic body recalling dried meadow grass and tobacco leaf. Rosy and floral facets sit on top while an earthy, faintly animalic indolic depth grows underneath, giving a thick, golden, slightly waxy richness as it dries down.
In perfumery
A heart and base note contributing honeyed warmth, hay and a softening roundness. It tames sharp edges, deepens tobacco, leather and floral accords, and blends with rose, tuberose and mimosa. It lends a dried-grass sweetness to classic chypres and golden florals.
Good to know
Spanish broom's tough fibrous stems were retted and spun into rope, nets, sails and cloth by Greeks, Romans and Carthaginians, a textile use reaching back to antiquity. As a fragrance material the flower absolute stays a niche specialty, far rarer than the mimosa it often accompanies.
Benzoin
Warm vanilla balsam wept from a tapped tree
What it is
Benzoin is a balsamic resin from Styrax trees of Southeast Asia. Siam benzoin comes from Styrax tonkinensis (Laos, Vietnam), Sumatra benzoin from Styrax benzoin (Indonesia). Incisions in the bark make the tree exude a gum that hardens over months into reddish tears, processed into resinoid and absolute.
How it smells
Sweet, warm and balsamic with a pronounced vanilla character and powdery, ambery, faintly cinnamic facets. Siam is rounder and more vanillic; Sumatra is smokier with a cinnamon-styrax edge. It opens soft and creamy, then dries into a cozy, resinous, almost caramelized sweetness.
In perfumery
A warm base note and gentle fixative lending sweetness, body and a vanillic glow to amber accords. It blends with labdanum, vanilla, tonka and incense, smoothing orientals and gourmands. Benzoin is a defining warmth in golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
Benzoin gave its name to benzoic acid and, through it, to the chemical term benzene. The word itself traces to the Arabic luban jawi, "frankincense of Java." The resin never flows on its own; every tear is the tree healing an incision deliberately cut into its bark.
Coumarin
Sweet hay and almond, the soul of fougere
What it is
Coumarin is an aroma molecule found naturally in tonka beans, sweet clover, sweetgrass and woodruff, first isolated from tonka by Vogel in 1820. It crystallizes as white shards. Most perfumery coumarin is now made synthetically, following the laboratory synthesis William Perkin achieved from coal tar in 1868.
How it smells
Warm, soft and sweet, smelling of fresh-cut hay drying in sun, with almond, vanilla, tobacco and a powdery, slightly nutty richness. It opens gently and lingers as a cozy, ambery sweetness, recalling new-mown grass, marzipan and the comforting smell of a tonka or vanilla pod.
In perfumery
A base-note workhorse adding sweetness, warmth and a powdery hay tone that blends and rounds compositions. It famously anchors the fougere accord alongside lavender and oakmoss, born in the first fougere of the 1880s, and underpins countless gourmands and ambers across the genre.

Coumarin was the first synthetic used in a commercial fine perfume, in an 1882 release that reportedly carried about ten percent coumarin and launched an entire fragrance family. Though restricted by IFRA over sensitization concerns, it remains one of perfumery's most beloved and widely used materials.
Ambergris
Sea-aged whale gold breathing warm salt air
What it is
Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the gut of the sperm whale, thought to coat the indigestible squid beaks it swallows. Produced by perhaps one percent of whales, it is expelled and drifts for years at sea, oxidizing under sun and salt before washing ashore as lumps.
How it smells
Fresh ambergris is fecal and marine; aged, it turns sweet, animalic and softly mineral. The scent is warm and skin-like, with tobacco, dry seaweed, old wood and a salty, faintly sweet musk. It reads less as a sharp odor than as warmth, diffusion and breath.
In perfumery
A prized base note and fixative, it lends warmth, diffusion and a luminous skin effect while slowing evaporation of lighter materials. Its bulk constituent is the near-odorless triterpene ambrein, whose oxidation products ambroxide and ambrinol carry the scent. Most fragrances now use synthetics like Ambroxan; rare real tinctures appear in bespoke work and vintage chypre and oriental compositions.

Though salvageable in some countries, ambergris is illegal to collect, possess or sell in the United States, protected as a sperm-whale product under marine-mammal and endangered-species law; India bans possession and sale as well, while Australia restricts only its commercial import and export. Single boulder-sized finds have sold elsewhere for hundreds of thousands of dollars, earning the nickname floating gold.
Sequoia
Ancient redwood canopy translated into scent
What it is
Not a distilled material but a reconstructed accord, since the redwoods Sequoiadendron giganteum and Sequoia sempervirens are protected and have no essential-oil trade. Perfumers build the impression from cedarwood fractions, vetiver, fir or cypress, mossy molecules and amber-musk bases that suggest standing timber.
How it smells
Dry standing timber and warm bark dust threaded with cool coniferous resin and a damp, humic earthiness. It opens green and mineral, like fog settling on fissured red bark, then dries into a quiet, shadowed woodiness with faint moss and a thread of smoke beneath.
In perfumery

Australian Sandalwood
Drier, resinous cousin of the milky woods
What it is
Oil from Santalum spicatum, a hemiparasitic tree of Western Australia's arid wheatbelt and rangelands. The fragrant heartwood and roots are harvested, dried, chipped, then steam-distilled over several days. Yield runs around two percent oil, built on santalols, the alcohols that carry the scent.
How it smells
Woody and warm with a dry, slightly bitter, resinous topnote that distinguishes it from creamy Indian sandalwood. Beneath sits a soft milky-balsamic body, faintly spicy and ambery. It dries quiet and suede-smooth, persistent and tenacious rather than sweet or overtly milky.
In perfumery
A base note valued as a fixative that anchors and rounds compositions. It smooths sharp florals, deepens rose, amber and incense, and partners well with vetiver and patchouli. It serves as a traceable stand-in for vulnerable Mysore sandalwood across modern woody fragrances.
Good to know
Sandalwood was Western Australia's biggest export earner in the 1840s, shipped to Asian incense markets long before its oil was first distilled in 1875. S. spicatum carries a threatened listing of its own, and most of it is still cut from wild rangeland stands under a state quota, with plantations supplying a growing share.
Birch
Smoke, leather and cool green bark
What it is
Material from Betula trees of cool northern forests. Two forms matter: birch tar, a dark smoky oil made by dry-distilling the bark over heat, and sweeter birch leaf or bud extracts. The tar carries phenols and creosote-like compounds, the source of its leathery character.
How it smells
Birch tar is intensely smoky and leathery, recalling campfire embers, tar, charred wood and old saddle leather, with a medicinal phenolic bite. Birch leaf and sap read greener and cooler, like wet bark, mint-tinged foliage and freshly snapped twigs in damp woodland.
In perfumery
Birch tar is a base note building smoky-leather and chypre accords, lending ruggedness and depth. Greener birch facets work in fresh and woody tops. It is the smoldering backbone of leather scents and of the classic dry, tarry leather genre of the early twentieth century.
Good to know
IFRA restricts birch tar over its carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, so perfumers work with purified, rectified grades rather than the crude pyrolysate. Birch tar once impregnated Russian leather, or yuft, which gave the whole Russian-leather genre its smoky, tar-edged signature.
Vetiver
Cool damp earth pulled from tangled roots
What it is
Vetiver is a tall tropical bunchgrass, Chrysopogon zizanioides, native to India and now grown mainly in Haiti and Java; Réunion's famed Bourbon oil has become scarce. The prized part is its dense network of fibrous underground roots, which are dug up, washed, dried, and steam-distilled into a thick amber-brown essential oil.
How it smells
Cool, damp earth and freshly cut grass over a woody, rooty base. Haitian oil reads smooth, bright, and faintly hazelnut-sweet; Java leans darker, smokier and more leathery. Beneath sit dry cedar, grapefruit-like bitterness, and a persistent green minerality that lingers for hours as it dries down.
In perfumery
A base note valued for tenacity, grounding earthiness, and natural fixative power. It anchors chypres and fougères, pairing with citrus, leather, and tobacco. Many vetiver soliflores are built around it, while its smokier, ashier side is showcased beside cypress and cedar.
Good to know
Haiti supplies roughly half the world's vetiver oil, most of it grown by smallholder farmers. The same deep roots that perfume a bottle are planted on hillsides worldwide as living barriers, gripping soil against erosion and stabilizing slopes where little else will hold.
