A split agarwood trunk in a misty rainforest at dawn, its pale wood veined with dark resin.

Best Oud Fragrances 2026: A Decant Guide

In Bangladesh, iron nails still go into agar trees an inch apart to make them lay down resin. Seven perfumes built on real agarwood, from Ensar Oud's Brunei kyara to wild oud from long-buried trees in Papua, beside the famous oud bottles.

On the rural roads around Sujanagar, in Moulvibazar, Bangladesh, a heavy, woody smell clings to the clothes of anyone who passes. Almost every house there seems to hold a factory, with steel cauldrons bubbling in long rows, and what goes into them starts with nails. Artisans drive thick iron nails into the trunk of an agar tree an inch apart, from base to branch; as one villager put it, the more wounds in the agar tree, the better the attar. Three to five years later the tree is felled, and the wood is cut small, soaked for one to one and a half months and heated in those cauldrons until the vapour condenses, drop by drop.

That attar is oud. The nails copy what happens in the wild, where an agar tree fills its heartwood with dark resin to defend itself after an injury, an insect attack or an infection, and in wild forests only 7 to 10 per cent of trees carry any. The first seven perfumes here are built on that wood, and all but one say where it grew.

The grade you can smell without fire

Wounding a tree with nails is slow, and it yields low-grade agarwood in small amounts. At the far end of the scale is kyara, the highest grade, known also as qi-nan and kanankoh; the perfumes below write it kinam or kynam. Kyara gives up its scent at room temperature, before any fire touches it. The Japanese school long held that true kyara came only from Vietnam. Ensar Oud, whose own kyara comes from Brunei, points to Chinese masters who have found kyara-grade wood in Brunei, Cambodia, Hainan, Laos and beyond.

Kyara de Kalbar smells of moist forest air under sun, of soaked soil after rain and agarwood freshly cut and still wet. At its centre is an oil Ensar Oud distilled from Brunei kynam shavings, set beside a vintage sinking-grade Kelantan distillation and a sinking-grade Terengganu oud. Orris, wild fig, blackcurrant and persimmon move through the resin on a powdery current, crossed by a cool, minty glint, and beneath them lies the faint bitter edge of high-grade kyara. There is no smoke in it, and the dark fruit gives it body without turning jammy.

Elixir Attar agrees that kinam-grade wood can grow in any region. At the still, its view cuts against Ensar's: it holds that nobody has ever distilled an oil from kinam wood alone.

Kinam Kodo is neither a kyara oil nor a blend of oud oils. Elixir Attar isolated components from kinam and sinking-grade woods, captured the smoke of green-soil kinam wood for the top, and assembled from them the smoke of high-grade kinam, with nothing else added. Set beside Kyara de Kalbar, which has no smoke in it at all, it is the same grade after the fire.

The standard bottle of Prince of Persia holds one full gram of Black Thai Kinam Oud 2011. Bergamot opens it, then two rose ottos, a Georgian rose deep enough to read as red wine and a white rose, creamy and dewy, with white pepper and nutmeg; blue cypress gives the heart its clean, mineral edge. The kinam waits underneath, velvety and balsamic, like old resin and dark lacquered wood in a temple. Civet and Mongolian musk warm it from below, both real, from a house that uses no synthetic compounds.

Folkwinds' last Wonderland perfume keeps its kinam on the far side of the mirror. On this side are plum blossom otto, September plums and rugosa rose, then Iranian rose otto, iris and blue lotus; through the glass it all dries onto wild Bornean agarwood and purple kinam, with aged cigars and frankincense. It was made as an edition of 50 bottles, and material discontinuations closed the Wonderland series behind it.

Old ouds, named by place

Natural agarwood takes 20 years or more to form, and one authority puts the best yields of resin in trees 50 years and older. Oud is sold under regional names, and the perfumes below name theirs down to the Malaysian state, the province and, in one case, a single town in Papua. On a label, the map can drift.

Oud Luwak 2 opens on a wild oud and on coffee from Aceh, fermented two months in teak barrels. The oud is dry and earthy, laced with incense and roasted coffee, with a richness close to cola and no barnyard sharpness. Russian Adam set a vintage Royal Burmese oud infused with vintage Royal civet at the heart, where it gives the perfume its weight, over Indian oud, benzoin, vetiver and smoky cedar. The wild oud comes from Merauke, Indonesia's easternmost town, in South Papua, from ancient trees long buried and only recently unearthed.

The name came from a dark cherry leather hide lying near the perfumer as he worked, and only one of its two ouds is Cambodian. Cherry, raspberry, strawberry, blackcurrant and blueberry rest on Rayong oud from eastern Thailand and Koh Kong oud from Cambodia; the oils include a 2015-period Koh Kong from Al Hashimi and 2007 and 2009 vintages from a third-generation distillery. In the making, the ouds melted into the berries until fruit and wood were hard to tell apart, and patchouli keeps the whole thing crisp.

The famous ouds, and where they grew

The famous oud perfumes give less away. Only Maison Francis Kurkdjian names a country for its oud, and none of them says how much oud is in the bottle.

Jacques Cavallier Belletrud faceted Ombre Nomade's oud wood with benzoin tears and raspberry and set a smoky wisp of incense floating far off. Louis Vuitton prints no origin, but the 2018 press traced its oud assam to a family-run plantation in Bangladesh that has grown agarwood for hundreds of years and gives the wood as much time as its natural putrefaction needs. That oud comes through leathery and spiced, the raspberry calming it, with a touch of rose and roast geranium.

Oud Satin Mood wraps oud from Laos in a luminous violet accord, Bulgarian rose and Turkish rose absolute, and a soft, warm base of vanilla and amber gives it an enveloping finish.

Oud for Greatness sets agarwood oil beside its oud and lifts both with lavender; nutmeg and saffron warm it, and patchouli and musk lie over it like a veil.

Initio gives its oud no origin, and neither do Amouage, Fragrance Du Bois or Creed. Only Maison Crivelli prints the word accord after its oud, in Oud Maracuja.

Agar has been grown around Sujanagar for about 400 years, by various accounts, and the Sanskrit Harsha Charita records something older: a gift from King Bhaskar Varman of Assam that included agarwood and liquid attar. The nails still go in an inch apart, and the roads still smell of it.

Frequently asked questions

Which oud perfumes here contain real agarwood?

The seven artisan perfumes name it: Kyara de Kalbar (Brunei kynam), Prince of Persia (Black Thai Kinam Oud 2011), Through the Looking Glass (wild Bornean agarwood and purple kinam), Oud Luwak 2 (wild oud from Merauke, Papua), Crimson Cambodia (Rayong and Koh Kong) and Borneo Trifecta (West Malaysian and Irian Jaya ouds). Kinam Kodo was assembled from components of kinam and sinking-grade woods and captured kinam smoke; it is neither a kyara oil nor a blend of oud oils.

What is kyara, or kinam?

Kyara is the highest grade of agarwood, deeply resinous and much rarer than common agarwood; it is also called qi-nan and kanankoh, and the houses here write it kinam or kynam. It gives off its scent even at room temperature, without being burned.

Do Ombre Nomade, Oud Satin Mood and Oud for Greatness contain real oud?

Each lists oud among its notes. Ombre Nomade's oud assam was traced by 2018 press to a family plantation in Bangladesh, Oud Satin Mood names an oud from Laos, and Oud for Greatness puts agarwood oil among its main notes; none gives an amount.

Are these oud oils or perfumes?

Every bottle here is a perfume made to be sprayed, from Kyara de Kalbar, a Pure Parfum, to Oud Luwak 2, an Extrait de Parfum. In most of them the agarwood shares the formula with flowers, resins or musks.
