Adi Ale Van: A Guide to the Artisan's Fragrances

One Romanian artist paints every bottle, lid and box himself. No two are identical, a limited run of 75 means 75, and when a series is finished it does not come back.

Adi ale Van started the label in 2021, still spends hours on a single finished piece, and stamps each one "Hand made in Romania". The juice he commissions from serious outside noses, Giovanni Festa, Jimmy Bodin and Anne-Sophie Behaghel among them. The object is entirely his.

The scents match the object: Orthodox ritual, rural memory and a streak of the macabre, from the most conceptual corner of our indie shelf. None of them are office perfumes. All of them deserve an evening on skin before a bottle is even a question.

Start in the monk's cell

Giovanni Festa built a monk's cell on Mount Athos: old books and melting candle wax wrapped in three church resins, opoponax, olibanum and myrrh. Quiet, spiritual incense without heaviness, and the gentlest door into the house.

Jimmy Bodin's evening prayer from 2023: frankincense and benzoin burning thick, lavender threading through like cool air drawn into a warm nave. A 30% extrait given a three-month maceration, released as 75 handmade bottles, and each bottle carries its own symbolism. The staples stand for life's obstacles, the red for sacrifice. A decant may be the only realistic way you ever wear it.

The sealed room

Festa again, without the mercy. Narcotic tuberose and jasmine give way to pale white oud, incense and dust, then a frankly animalic floor of castoreum and civet. It smells like a sacred room sealed for a very long time. Cold weather, after dark, presence over approachability. Decants are currently sold out; the full bottle is still available.

Mourning you can eat

Coliva is the wheat-and-honey dish served at Romanian memorials, and Festa turned it into perfume. White chocolate, roasted coffee and bitter cacao open pastry-thick, warm bread and butter make it a kitchen, and iris and bitter wormwood keep the grief in the sweetness. Comfort and ceremony at once.

Named for Romania's December 1989 revolution, and it wears like the party after. Jimmy Bodin spikes a triple-vanilla core with dark rum and praline-rich hazelnut, and the projection is enormous. Decants are currently sold out; the full bottle is still available.

The daylight pass

Hai hui roughly translates as roaming aimlessly. Anne-Sophie Behaghel composed it in 2022 to wear exactly that way: cool mint and juicy pineapple, a creamy green heart of fig and almond, a dry papyrus-and-vetiver floor. The one bottle in the line built for sun.
