The Story
The Jester is the fourth in the house's WHO AM I collection, after The Lover, The Stranger and The Void. The Antagonist works anonymously and means it: the manifesto opens by saying it does not matter who I am, and no nose is credited on any release.
Handmade in small batches in Romania at a stated 50% perfume oil, which is genuine extrait strength and the one hard fact behind its longevity. Launched on a timed presale.

Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and skin
The dry, smoky scent of tanned hide, edged with birch tar, tobacco, and a faint bitter rasp. It feels confident and worn-in, evoking a well-loved jacket, suede gloves, and a quiet sense of authority on the skin.
Tobacco
dried leaf, honey and smoke
Dried, golden leaves steeped in honey, hay, and a whisper of smoke, sweet and faintly fermented like an open pipe tin. It feels masculine and lived-in, warm and contemplative, conjuring leather chairs and slow autumn evenings.
Warm Spicy

Leather

What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Tobacco
Dried leaf curing into honey and hay
What it is
The cured leaf of Nicotiana tabacum, a tall broad-leaved plant in the nightshade family. For perfumery the dried, fermented leaves are solvent-extracted to a dark concrete and absolute. Unburned and unsmoked, the leaf gives a sweet hay-like aroma rather than the smell of cigarette smoke.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and dry: cured hay and pipe tobacco laced with honey, dried fruit and a faint cocoa. There is a leathery, slightly herbal-green bite up top that settles into a soft, ambery, balsamic warmth, sometimes carrying a powdery floral nuance.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base note giving warmth, sweetness and a lived-in depth, often paired with vanilla, tonka, leather, honey and spice. It headlines tobacco-centered scents, often built around vanilla or sweet spice, and shades countless oriental and fougere compositions from beneath.
Good to know
The sweet, fruity, hay-like character of the absolute comes from curing and fermentation, not the living leaf, which smells sharp and green. Authentic tobacco absolute is expensive and restricted in some markets, so many modern tobacco accords are reconstructed from coumarin, hay and spice notes instead.
Raspberry
Bright berry sparkle with a jammy heart
What it is
A bright berry note with a jammy heart. Raspberry adds juice and playfulness to even the darkest composition.
How it smells
Sweet and vivid, with a tart sparkle over a soft jammy depth. On skin it settles into a warm, rosy fruitiness.
In perfumery
Raspberry loves rose, patchouli and dark woods, where its brightness cuts through the shadow. A little brings a whole blend to life.
Good to know
Raspberry can lean fresh or jammy depending on what surrounds it. Against oud and incense it turns rich and almost liqueur-like.
Black Pomegranate
Tart ruby seeds, crisp and bittersweet
What it is
Pomegranate is the jewel-like seeded fruit of Punica granatum, a shrub of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Each ruby aril holds tart juice around a crunchy seed. No usable essential oil exists, so the perfumery note is a fantasy accord reconstructed from fruity and green aroma molecules.
How it smells
A bright, juicy tartness with a winey red-fruit edge, crisp and faintly astringent rather than sugary. There is a watery, almost metallic freshness up top, a cranberry-raspberry sharpness in the heart, and a dry, tannic bitterness that keeps the accord from turning cloying.
In perfumery
Pomegranate brings sparkling tartness to fruity-floral and chypre compositions, lifting rose, peony, and citrus while pairing with patchouli or musk beneath. It anchors dark, spicy-rose compositions where it sharpens the rose, and lends gemlike fruitiness across many modern fruity-rose scents.
Good to know
Real pomegranate is nearly odorless, so the note offers color and tartness more than literal smell. Its name traces to Latin for seeded apple. The fruit later lent its French name, grenade, to the weapon, which early soldiers thought resembled the round, seed-packed fruit.
Spiced Red Wine
Warm wine, clove and orange peel
What it is
Not a raw material but a reconstruction: red wine warmed with cinnamon, clove, star anise and citrus peel. Perfumers build it from wine lactones and grape esters over warm spice, because actual wine loses everything interesting about it the moment it is distilled.
How it smells
Fruity and boozy at once, dark berry sweetness cut by clove heat and a bright thread of orange peel. A faint sourness underneath stands in for the tannin and stops the whole thing collapsing into mulled-cider sweetness.
In perfumery
It sits between gourmand and spicy without belonging to either. Useful for warming a leather, or for giving a dark fruit somewhere to go, and almost always read as a winter effect.
Good to know
The boozy impression comes from esters rather than from alcohol; ethanol itself smells of very little once a perfume dries. What you read as wine is fruit and spice arranged to imply it.
Black Tea
Tannic warmth steeping with hay and tobacco
What it is
Fully oxidized leaves of Camellia sinensis, long cultivated across China. Plucked leaves are withered, rolled, fully oxidized and dried, deepening their color and aroma. Perfumery draws on rare tea absolutes and CO2 extracts, though the note is most often rebuilt from aroma chemicals as an accord.
How it smells
Astringent and warm, sitting between rose and jasmine softened by powdery ionones. Dried-leaf bitterness carries hints of hay, tobacco and worn leather over a tannic dryness. It opens crisp and airy, then settles into a smoky, woody calm.
In perfumery
A versatile heart note that grounds compositions, its tannic edge balancing sweetness with powdery elegance and an airy, soothing lift. Built from ionones, theaspirane, tabanone and guaiacwood, it pairs with citrus, florals and woods, defining many modern tea fragrances.
Good to know
Genuine tea extracts exist from specialist naturals suppliers, but most tea notes are reconstructions because true extracts are scarce and costly. Theaspirane, identified in tea volatiles in the early 1970s, supplies the sharp metallic tannin, while tabanone adds a warm tobacco-and-acorn nuance.
Black Pepper
Dry heat that prickles and sharpens
What it is
The dried unripe berry of Piper nigrum, a tropical climbing vine grown in India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Madagascar. Green peppercorns are sun-dried until black and wrinkled, then steam-distilled to an essential oil; a cleaner, more diffusive material is obtained instead by CO2 extraction.
How it smells
Sharp, dry and warm-spicy with a crisp peppery bite that tingles the nose, wrapped in a fresh terpenic, woody-resinous tone and a faint citrus lift. The distilled oil reads bright and airy; the CO2 extract is rounder, warmer and closer to a freshly cracked peppercorn.
In perfumery
A top note adding lift, sparkle and a spicy snap to fresh, woody and fougere compositions, and a foil for rose, vetiver and amber in the heart. Some compositions build an entire scent around its dry, radiant crackle over cedar and woods.
Good to know
The prickly heat of whole pepper comes largely from piperine, a non-volatile compound that does not carry into the distilled oil, so black pepper essential oil smells aromatic but is not pungent on the tongue. Pepper was once so valued it served as currency and rent.
Beeswax Candles
Golden honeyed wax, the warmth of the hive
What it is
Beeswax is secreted by worker honeybees (Apis mellifera) from abdominal glands to build honeycomb. For perfumery the raw wax is solvent-extracted into an absolute, a dark golden semi-solid carrying the residual honey, propolis and pollen aromatics trapped within the comb during the bees' work.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and animalic, leading with honeyed richness over a soft beeswax-candle facet. Beneath lies a hay-like, tobacco-tinged depth with floral and faintly fecal undertones from propolis. It feels golden, waxy and rounded, recalling honeycomb, freshly snuffed candles and sun-warmed wax.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base note bringing honeyed warmth, animalic roundness and a creamy waxy texture that softens florals and ambers. It pairs with orange blossom, immortelle, tobacco and labdanum. Niche compositions often foreground its raw, hive-like character at full strength.
Good to know
Beeswax absolute is costly because the raw wax yields under one percent absolute, so it takes roughly a hundred kilos of wax for one kilo of absolute. Bees themselves consume about eight kilos of honey to make a single kilo of wax, compounding its scarcity and price.
Velvet Drapes
The clean glow of laundered cotton
What it is
Fabric is an abstract accord rather than a harvested material, built to evoke freshly washed and line-dried textile. Perfumers assemble it from aldehydes, white musks, soft iris and clean ambrette, plus a touch of starch and powdery florals that suggest cotton, linen and warm ironed cloth.
How it smells
It reads airy, soft and immaculate: a pressed cotton shirt, a sun-dried sheet, the faint warmth of an iron passing over linen. Slightly powdery and sweetly clean, with a cool starched edge that settles into a skin-close, almost weightless comfort.
In perfumery
Fabric notes lend compositions a freshly laundered, intimate cleanness and bridge florals to musks. They lean on Iso E Super and white musks, pairing with cotton flower, iris, lavender and amber. Countless laundry-inspired and clean-skin scents are built almost entirely on this effect.
Good to know
There is no extractable smell of cloth itself. What reads as clean laundry is largely the scent of synthetic musks and aldehydes added to detergents in the twentieth century, which trained noses worldwide to equate those molecules with cleanliness.
Aged Parchment
Dry paper, dust and closed rooms
What it is
Parchment is untanned animal skin, stretched and scraped, used for documents long before paper. As a note it stands for the smell of old paper and the rooms it is kept in rather than for anything distillable.
How it smells
Dry, faintly sweet and dusty, with a papery flatness and a trace of the animal it once was. There is vanilla in it, which is real chemistry rather than an impression: ageing paper releases vanillin as its lignin breaks down.
In perfumery
It reads as age, as libraries and archives, and it gives leather and tobacco somewhere quiet to rest. Usually built from woody-ambery materials with a little vanillin, sometimes a touch of castoreum for the skin underneath.
Good to know
The old-book smell is genuinely measurable, and conservators use it to assess a document’s condition without touching it. Your nose is reading chemical decay.
Sandalwood
Creamy meditative woods that breathe in slowly
What it is
Sandalwood oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood and roots of slow-growing Santalum trees, classically Santalum album of Mysore, India. As the wild Indian source neared collapse, plantations of the same species in tropical Western Australia now supply much of the world's perfumery-grade oil.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a smooth woody warmth and a faintly sweet, rosy, almost buttery edge. It carries no sharpness, only a rounded balsamic depth. It stays remarkably steady on skin, glowing quietly for hours rather than opening and drying in distinct stages.
In perfumery
A base note valued as both scent and fixative, sandalwood lends creaminess, warmth and a meditative softness that binds compositions together. It pairs beautifully with rose, jasmine, vetiver and spice. Many meditative woody and incense fragrances celebrate it at their heart.
Good to know
Genuine Mysore sandalwood was so overharvested that India tightened export controls and the wild tree became vulnerable, with oil prices reported around two thousand dollars per kilogram. Plantations of Santalum album grown near Kununurra in Western Australia now sustainably recreate the original creamy profile.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Patchouli comes from Pogostemon cablin, a leafy bush in the mint family native to tropical Asia and grown mainly in Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. The harvested leaves are dried and lightly cured or fermented, then steam-distilled or hydrodistilled into a thick, dark essential oil.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and woody, like damp forest floor, wet soil and old cellars, threaded with a winey, slightly sweet darkness. Fresh oil can read sharp, almost camphorous and green; with age it rounds into chocolate, leather and dried-fruit warmth that clings for hours.
In perfumery
A base note and powerful fixative, patchouli anchors a composition and lengthens its wear. It forms the backbone of chypres and orientals, pairing with rose, vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. It defines many gourmand-oriental blends and carries the woody-balsamic heart of plush chypre accords.
Good to know
In the 19th century, real Kashmiri shawls were packed with dried patchouli leaves to repel moths in transit, so Europeans learned to recognise genuine imports by smell. Unlike most essential oils, patchouli improves with age, deepening and mellowing over years much like wine.
Saffron
Crimson threads breathing leather, honey and dry hay
What it is
Saffron is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, a purple autumn-flowering crocus in the iris family. Each bloom yields just three slender crimson threads, plucked by hand. The dried threads are steeped into a tincture or solvent-extracted into an absolute to capture their aromatic oil for perfumery.
How it smells
Warm and dry at first, with hay, honey and toasted bread, then a metallic, leathery edge driven by the molecule safranal. Beneath runs a bittersweet, faintly medicinal earthiness and a soft rubbery warmth. It opens spicy and golden, drying into suede, tobacco and dusty amber.
In perfumery
Saffron works in the heart, bridging spice and leather and lending a glowing, reddish warmth. It pairs classically with rose, oud, amber and tobacco. Whole leathery accords can be built around it, and it is often wed to rose for a rich, spiced-floral effect.
Good to know
Saffron is the costliest spice on earth, dearer by weight than gold. A single kilogram demands roughly 150,000 hand-picked flowers and many days of stooped labor. Most perfumery saffron is reconstructed from synthetic safranal or saffron bases, since the natural extract is too rare and expensive to use widely.
Cedarwood
Dry pencil shavings and sun-warmed timber
What it is
An essential oil steam-distilled from the wood, shavings and sawdust of several conifers. Main sources are Virginia cedar and Texas cedar, both junipers, plus the true Atlas and Himalayan cedars of the Cedrus genus. The fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood and sawmill byproduct.
How it smells
Dry, woody and warm, the archetype of freshly sharpened pencils and a cedar closet. Virginia cedar is pencil-like and balsamic; Atlas cedar is softer, sweeter, almost honeyed-resinous. Across types runs a clean, slightly smoky, faintly camphoraceous tone that dries to a smooth, sappy warmth.
In perfumery

Good to know
The cedar of pencils and storage chests is usually botanically a juniper, not a true Cedrus. Cedar-derived molecules like Cedramber and Iso E Super power a huge share of contemporary woody fragrances, making cedarwood one of perfumery's most quietly ubiquitous building blocks.
Burnt Incense
Sacred smoke curling from resin and embers
What it is
In perfumery, incense usually means olibanum, the oleo-gum-resin of Boswellia trees from Oman, Somalia and Ethiopia. The bark is slashed, weeps a milky exudate that hardens into amber tears, and these are steam-distilled to an essential oil or solvent-extracted to an absolute; blends often add labdanum and styrax.
How it smells

Good to know
Frankincense was once worth its weight in gold, carried along ancient Arabian caravan routes to temples across the Mediterranean and beyond. Wild Boswellia stands are now threatened by over-tapping, grazing and climate stress, prompting growing interest in sustainable harvesting and tapping quotas.
Ancient Oak
The warm grain of the cooper's barrel
What it is
The wood of oak trees in the genus Quercus, hardwoods of Europe and North America. The aroma comes mainly from the heartwood, captured by distilling or solvent-extracting wood chips, or borrowed from the toasted oak staves of wine and whisky barrels and reconstructed with aroma chemicals such as vanillin and oak lactones.
How it smells
Dry, woody and slightly sweet, with a sawdust grain that turns warm and vanillic when the wood is charred. Untreated it reads of pencil shavings and cool bark; barrel-aged or smoked it becomes nutty, tannic and faintly boozy, edging toward leather and toasted coconut.
In perfumery
A base and heart note giving structure, dryness and a barrel-warm backbone. It anchors woody, leathery, boozy and gourmand accords and pairs with vanilla, tobacco, whisky and amber. It defines barrel-and-cellar compositions and many whisky-themed fragrances.
Good to know
Much of an aged spirit's vanilla sweetness comes from oak: charring the barrel breaks the wood's lignin down into vanillin, the very molecule that flavours vanilla. A single oak can take well over a century to mature before its timber is cut for staves.
