El Khaldi Decants and Samples
El Khaldi is a studio for people who want oud that has been lived with rather than dressed up. Maher Elkhaldi builds his compositions around specific, dated aged woods and thick, macerated bases, so a bottle does not smell like a formula so much as like a room where a particular resin has been sitting for years. These are dense, nocturnal, unhurried scents where fruit and leather and animalic warmth are pressed into the wood instead of floated on top of it. If you are drawn to oud that feels vintage and slightly untamed, the El Khaldi range rewards patience, and that makes it a house worth trying in small pours before you commit.
Every El Khaldi decant at Gouttes Rares is poured from a bottle we bought at full retail from the house, never from the grey market. We decant to order with lab-grade Socorex syringes into the sizes you see here (1ml, 2ml, 5ml, and 10ml), measured and sealed the day it ships, so what reaches you is fresh and exactly what you asked for. It is the honest way to try a serious oud before spending on a full bottle.
The El Khaldi range
- Crimson Cambodia. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, and blueberry stained into vintage Cambodian oud until fruit and bark are inseparable, warm and resinous and a little decadent. From $55.
- Ambergris Myanmar. Sharp cinnamon and leather up front, then Burmese and Al Hashimi oud pressing through coumarin and wool, all held by a thick, paste-like ambergris. Dense and animalic and built for the evening. From $55.
How to start
Start with a 2ml of whichever pull speaks to you, the fruit-and-wood of Crimson Cambodia or the leathery ambergris of Ambergris Myanmar, and give it a full day on skin. If you want to compare, a set of both is the fastest way to learn which register you reach for. When one becomes the scent you keep coming back to, size up to a 5ml or 10ml before you ever think about a full bottle.
