Areej Le Doré
Nepalese Patchouli
Cool purple flowers rising out of wet mountain earth. Lilac, hyacinth and blue lotus open it like mist, then a rare high-altitude patchouli takes the whole composition over: green, rooty, violet-shadowed and nothing like the sweet brown patchouli most people expect.
The Story
Russian Adam built this one around a single material rather than around a structure. The house calls it one of the rarest patchouli oils from the misty mountains of Nepal, a deep and highly faceted oil carrying more than a hundred aromatic molecules, and says plainly that this is not a conventional patchouli fragrance but a composition designed to reveal the raw beauty of the material itself.
The centrepiece is the base: a multilayered co-tincture of black truffle, orris root, wild Siberian deer musk and Ethiopian civet, made by Adam using ultrasound and vacuum infusion and used not as a base accord but as the carrier the entire perfume is built in. It was a timed limited release and sold out at the house.

Patchouli
Damp earth and dark cocoa
A deep, earthy darkness that smells of damp soil, dry wood, and a faint bitter-sweet cocoa, with a cool, almost camphorous edge. It feels grounding and a little mysterious, lending weight and shadow to whatever it touches.
Earthy
Damp soil after the rain
The mineral smell of wet ground, root vegetables pulled from the dirt, and beets turned over in a garden. Cool, raw, and faintly bitter, it grounds a fragrance with the dark, humid breath of the forest floor.
Powdery
Soft hush of dressed skin
A velvety, slightly dry softness of iris root, violet, and fine talc, like face powder or clean linen warmed by skin. It feels intimate, refined, and nostalgic, blurring a fragrance into a gentle, cushioned haze.
Animalic
Warm skin, musk and muscle
A raw, body-warm muskiness that reads of skin, hair, and fur, sometimes sweet and powdery, sometimes sharp and faintly feral. It feels primal and intimate, blurring the line between perfume and the person wearing it.
Floral
Petals in soft full bloom
The rounded, dewy scent of flowers in bloom, soft and slightly sweet with a powdery, nectar-like glow. It reads romantic and gentle, conjuring a garden in late spring and a feeling of lightness against the skin.
Mossy

The damp, earthy smell of green moss on shaded bark, faintly bitter and inky with a cool woody depth. It grounds a fragrance in forest-floor shadow, lending an old, melancholy elegance that feels like breathing in a rain-soaked wood.
Lilac
Cool spring blossom with a green stem underneath
What it is
Lilac is the blossom of Syringa vulgaris, a hardy shrub that flowers for only a few weeks in late spring. The flower gives up almost no oil to distillation, so nearly every lilac in perfumery is reconstructed by the perfumer from other materials rather than extracted from the plant.
How it smells
Fresh, cool and powdery, a light floral sweetness with a green, almost watery stem beneath it. A faint bitterness and a touch of almond keep it from turning sugary. Where rose is warm and jasmine is heavy, lilac stays airy and a little wistful.
In perfumery
Lilac is built rather than harvested, usually around terpineol, cinnamic alcohol and heliotropin with a trace of indole. It belongs to spring florals and to pale, cool compositions where it lends an old-garden nostalgia, and it blends readily with hyacinth, violet and green notes.
Good to know
The absence of a natural lilac oil is one of perfumery’s oldest frustrations. Enfleurage and modern headspace analysis have both been used to chase it, and the result is always an interpretation. What you smell is a portrait of lilac, painted from memory.
Hyacinth
Cold spring blooms, green honeyed and narcotic
What it is
The dense flower spike of Hyacinthus orientalis, a bulbous spring plant native to the eastern Mediterranean and cultivated heavily in the Netherlands. A true absolute is solvent-extracted from the fresh blooms, but it is rare and costly, so synthetic reconstructions dominate nearly all modern use.
How it smells
Intensely green and leafy with a cool, watery freshness, threaded by a sharp green-honeyed sweetness and a heady, narcotic floral heart. An earthy, faintly bulbous undertone grounds it. The opening reads crisp and sappy before settling into soft, indolic floral warmth.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing green, springlike volume and lift, often paired with galbanum, narcissus, rose and violet leaf. It helped shape classic green florals, contributing the cool, dewy texture that defines an early-spring garden accord just after rain.
Good to know
The signature green-honeyed sharpness comes mostly from phenylacetaldehyde, present at barely one percent of the absolute yet detectable at extremely low levels. Because real hyacinth oil is prohibitively expensive, perfumers rebuild the note from molecules such as PADMA, the more stable acetal of that aldehyde.
Blue Lotus
The sacred water lily of pharaohs and dreams
What it is
Blue lotus is Nymphaea caerulea, the blue Egyptian water lily, a star-petalled flower rooted in Nile mud and ponds across North and East Africa. The blossoms are solvent-extracted with hexane into a concrete, then ethanol-washed into a thick, dark absolute that preserves their delicate aromatic compounds.
How it smells
Sweet and honeyed with a green, watery floralcy and soft fruity, lychee-like undertones, edged by an earthy, slightly spicy warmth and a waxy, powdery backbone. It opens cool and aquatic like a pond at dawn, then dries down resinous and balsamic, more meditative than bright.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for an exotic floral character bridging aquatic freshness and warm sweetness, typically dosed below five percent given its strength. Rare and costly, it appears in niche compositions and amber-incense accords built around ancient Egyptian and meditative themes.
Good to know
Ancient Egyptians revered the flower as a symbol of rebirth and the sun, depicting it on tomb walls and steeping it in wine for its mild psychoactive effect. It opens at dawn and closes at dusk, a daily cycle that tied it to resurrection myths.
Nepalese Patchouli
Cool Himalayan earth, violet-shadowed and slow to unfold
What it is
Nepalese patchouli is oil distilled from Pogostemon cablin grown high in the Himalayan foothills, where cold nights and thin mountain air slow the plant’s growth. The leaves are fermented and dried before distillation, and the resulting oil is far scarcer than the Indonesian material that supplies most of the world.
How it smells
Earthy and textured rather than sweet, opening green and almost mineral before the damp forest-floor depth arrives. Where common patchouli turns chocolatey and thick, the Nepalese oil stays cool and faceted, carrying violet-like shadows, wet root and a dry woody rasp that keeps unfolding for hours.
In perfumery
More than a hundred aromatic molecules sit inside the oil, which is why it can carry a composition alone rather than serving as a base. Perfumers use it where they want patchouli to be the subject, not the shadow, pairing it with orris and cool florals that draw out its powdery and violet facets.
Good to know
Patchouli is one of the few materials that improves with age. Freshly distilled oil is harsh and green; after several years the harshness settles and the sweetness deepens. High-altitude harvests are prized for exactly the complexity that altitude and slow growth produce.
Orris Butter
Powdered violet rooted in patient buried earth
What it is
Orris is the aroma material from the rhizome of iris flowers, chiefly Iris pallida grown in the hills of Tuscany. The roots are harvested, dried and aged three to six years so enzymes slowly develop irones, then ground and steam-distilled into a waxy, ivory orris butter.
How it smells
A cool, powdery violet scent with a suede-like, almost edible carrot-and-raw-flour facet. It reads dry rather than sweet, evoking face powder, soft leather and damp soil, carrying a silvery, slightly metallic shimmer that feels both floral and rooty at once.
In perfumery
A heart and base material prized for its body and a powdery lift that smooths sharp florals and woods. It pairs with violet, rose, iris leaf and ambrette. It defines a whole lineage of refined powdery-iris and aldehydic-floral compositions.
Good to know
Orris ranks among the costliest naturals in perfumery. A ton of aged rhizome yields only about two kilograms of orris butter, and high-irone grades can exceed one hundred thousand dollars per kilogram, the cost driven by years of aging before any scent develops.
Egyptian Violet Leaf
Cool green leaf breathing crushed grass and cucumber
What it is
An absolute drawn from the leaves of Viola odorata, the sweet violet, grown chiefly around Grasse in France and in Egypt. Fresh leaves are washed with solvent into a waxy concrete, then alcohol-extracted into a thick, deep-green liquid. Roughly one ton of leaves yields under a kilogram.
How it smells
Crisp, green and watery rather than floral. It opens with crushed leaf and cut grass over a cold cucumber tang and a faintly metallic edge. As it settles, a dry, slightly leathery and earthy facet emerges, far drier than the candied purple flower itself.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note prized for green freshness and a transparent leathery lift. It pairs with iris, rose, cucumber and leather and cools fougeres. It is a signature note in classic green-leather compositions; many violet-leaf openings also lean on synthetic methyl octine carbonate.
Good to know
Its character is carried by a single trace molecule, (2E,6Z)-nonadienal, called violet leaf aldehyde or cucumber aldehyde, present at around one percent yet doing most of the smelling. The same compound is exactly what makes freshly cut cucumber smell green.
Russian Oakmoss
The damp green soul of the forest floor
What it is
Oakmoss is not a true moss but a lichen, Evernia prunastri, growing on oak and other deciduous bark across temperate Europe, notably the Balkans, France and Morocco. The harvested thalli are solvent-extracted into a dark, viscous concrete and absolute, the raw materials used in perfumery.
How it smells
Deeply earthy and forest-green, with damp bark, wet stone and a leathery, inky undertone. A dry, faintly bitter mossiness carries marine and tar-like facets. The effect is shadowy rather than fresh, evoking the cool floor beneath old trees after rain has soaked the ground.
In perfumery
A base note and the backbone of the chypre family, lending structure, depth and a vintage signature. It pairs classically with bergamot, labdanum and patchouli. It defines the great peach-spiced chypres and the green core of classic galbanum florals, plus countless mossy fougères and masculines.
Good to know
Oakmoss extracts contain atranol and chloroatranol, potent skin allergens the EU effectively banned in 2017. IFRA now requires reduced-allergen, low-atranol versions, capping these molecules to trace levels, which has quietly reshaped how the classic chypre smells in reformulated modern perfumes.
Black Truffle
Damp earth, cellar stone and something faintly animal
What it is
The black truffle is the fruiting body of a fungus that grows underground in symbiosis with the roots of oak and hazel, ripening through winter and found by trained dogs. Much of its aroma comes from dimethyl sulphide and androstenone, the second of which is also a mammalian pheromone.
How it smells
Deep, damp and savoury: wet soil, cellar stone and mushroom with something faintly animal running beneath. There is sweetness in it too, closer to cocoa or hazelnut than to sugar. It is more felt than smelled, filling a room quietly and refusing to be placed.
In perfumery
Truffle is rare and costly as a perfumery material, used in tinctures rather than as a dominant note. It brings an earthy, faintly erotic depth that makes woods and roots feel alive instead of dry. A very small quantity is enough to shift an entire base.
Good to know
Truffle aroma is famously volatile and survives neither heat nor time well, which is why chefs shave it raw at the last moment. Capturing it for perfume usually means infusing the fresh fungus directly into the perfume base, a slow and expensive process.
Orris Root
Cool powdery violet wrung from patient roots
What it is
The rhizome of iris, chiefly Iris pallida and Iris germanica, grown mainly in Tuscany and Morocco. After flowering the root is unearthed, hand-cleaned, then dried and aged three to five years so its scent compounds form, before being ground and steam-distilled into waxy orris butter.
How it smells
Cool, dry and powdery, with a delicate violet-like sweetness wrapped around a faintly earthy, carrot-and-suede quality. It reads silvery and almost edible, like iris petals over fresh bread or rice powder. Refined and restrained, it lingers as a soft, makeup-like haze.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base material prized for its powdery elegance and quiet diffusion, contributing the irones that give a violet-suede signature. It pairs with rose, violet, leather and musk. It defines the powdery-iris signature of countless modern masculines and iris-forward classics.
Good to know
The years-long aging needed to develop irones makes orris one of perfumery's costliest naturals: refined orris butter can reach tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram, since hundreds of kilos of root yield barely one. The scent lives in the root, not the iris flower.
Wild Siberian Deer Musk
Cabardine musk from the taiga's deer
What it is
Dried glandular musk from the male Siberian musk deer, Moschus moschiferus, ranging across the boreal taiga of Siberia, Mongolia and the Russian Far East. Historically traded as Cabardine, it is one of the regional grades of true deer musk, alongside the prized Tonquin and the Assam and Nepal types.
How it smells
Raw, it is sharply animalic, ammoniac and fecal, almost shocking straight from the pod. Tinctured and aged for months, that softens into a warm, faintly leathery, dry-woody musk with powdery radiance and skin warmth. Connoisseurs rank it a notch below Tonquin: coarser, less rounded, less honeyed and sweet.
In perfumery
Used historically as a fixative and animalic heart, tinctured in alcohol over months before blending. Cabardine carried lower muscone content and a rougher edge than the benchmark Tonquin grade, so it sold cheaper, yet it still commanded extraordinary sums back when natural deer musk underpinned the great fougeres and orientals.
Good to know
Moschus moschiferus has been CITES-listed since 1979, with most populations now on Appendix I. Each gland yields only about twenty-five grams, so roughly thirty to forty males die per kilogram, and far more through indiscriminate snaring. Genuine Siberian musk survives in vintage bottles and a few all-natural artisan houses; nearly every modern fragrance uses synthetic musks instead.
Ethiopian Civet
Animal warmth that makes flowers bloom indecent
What it is
A glandular paste from the African civet, a nocturnal cat-like mammal secreting it from a perineal pouch, historically scraped out by hand and tinctured in alcohol. Modern perfumery instead uses synthetic civetone, a large-ring ketone whose macrocyclic structure was elucidated by Leopold Ruzicka in 1926.
How it smells
Raw and undiluted it is shockingly fecal, pungent and indolic, edged with skatole and sour butter. Diluted to traces it turns warm, honeyed and slightly leathery, with a tobacco hum and skin-like radiance. The shift from repellent to alluring happens entirely through dilution.
In perfumery
A base-note fixative valued for radiance and carnal warmth, lending florals a living, skin-like glow. Classic alongside jasmine and rose in animalic chypres and orientals. Trace civet shaped many vintage aldehydic florals and ambery orientals before synthetic civetone displaced the natural material.
Good to know
Traditional civet farming caged animals in cruel conditions to harvest the paste, driving a near-total switch to synthetic civetone on ethical grounds. This perfumery civet is unrelated to the Asian palm civet behind kopi luwak coffee, a separate species entirely.
Fragrance Character
It opens cool and misted rather than warm, pale florals with an animal musk already flickering underneath. The patchouli then takes command, earthy and textured but refined, unfolding green, woody and mineral facets. Orris butter smooths it into powdered softness, violet leaf adds a green edge and Russian oakmoss pulls it toward forest floor.
