Pan's Labyrinth v1
The Story
Pan's Labyrinth is Lost Tribe's modern fougère, made with perfumer Rajesh Balkrishnan, and both names are on the label. It took a year and ten versions, with two months spent on a custom powder accord. This is the original 2025 release. The later v2 keeps the same formula at a higher concentration.
Powdery
Soft hush of dressed skin
A velvety, slightly dry softness of iris root, violet, and fine talc, like face powder or clean linen warmed by skin. It feels intimate, refined, and nostalgic, blurring a fragrance into a gentle, cushioned haze.
Woody
Dry grain of cut timber
The smell of cedar shavings, sandalwood, and dry vetiver roots, a sanded, resinous warmth with a faint pencil-box rasp. It feels grounded and composed, the quiet backbone that makes a scent read as serious and lasting.
Sweet
Warm sugar you cannot quite name
Caramel, honey, spun sugar: sweetness that hovers between all three and never settles on one. This is the gourmand pull, the thing that makes someone lean in closer than they meant to, warm and soft and a half step short of edible.
Almond
sweet marzipan and bitter pit
A sweet, nutty warmth like marzipan and amaretto, edged with the cool bitterness of the cracked pit. It is dessert and warning at once: comforting on the surface, with an almost cherry-stone sharpness running underneath that keeps it from ever going soft.
Aromatic
Crushed herbs in cool air
The green, camphorous coolness of lavender, rosemary, sage, and thyme, like herbs bruised between the fingers. It feels clean, invigorating, and a touch austere, the crisp backbone of a classic barbershop freshness.
Musky
Warm breath of clean skin
A soft, slightly animalic warmth that smells like clean skin and freshly dried laundry, intimate and faintly sweet. It hums quietly underneath a fragrance, a second skin that only registers when someone is already standing close enough to catch it.
Amber
Resin warmed until it goes sweet
Labdanum, benzoin and vanilla melted together into something sweet but dusky, like tree sap gone soft in the sun with a thread of incense smoke through it. Amber does not sparkle or shout. It sits close to the skin and gives off heat for hours.
Bergamot
Sparkling citrus light with a bitter edge
What it is
Nobody eats bergamot. It is sour, seedy and disappointing, and almost the whole world's supply grows on one strip of Calabrian coast, farmed purely for the oil pressed cold from its green rind.
How it smells
Zest and green light in the first second, then something rounder than lemon: a floral, tea-like smoothness sitting on a faintly bitter warmth. It burns off fast. What stays behind is a quiet, slightly spiced hum.
In perfumery
It defines eau de cologne, and sits on top of nearly every fougère alongside lavender and oakmoss. Perfumers want the first bright second it gives, and the oil is also what makes Earl Grey smell like Earl Grey.
Good to know
The thing that makes it sparkle can also burn. Bergamot carries bergapten, which leaves skin hypersensitive to sunlight, so perfumers either keep the dose low or reach for a grade with the molecule stripped out.
Rose Otto
Dewy sweetness over a green, peppery bite
What it is
Most perfumery rose is one of two: damascena from Bulgaria and Turkey, centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise until about ten thirty, then distilled into otto or solvent-extracted into absolute.
How it smells
Fresh, honeyed, green at the edges, with something dewy still on it. Spice and fruit sit underneath, and in the absolute a jammy darkness. Otto opens crisp and bright; absolute is warmer, smokier, closer to skin.
In perfumery
Rose behaves less like one note than a whole palette. It carries a perfume alone or vanishes into a chypre, turns dark against oud and patchouli, goes powdery beside violet, and holds a floral heart together.
Good to know
The two extractions are not the same bargain. Otto takes three to four thousand kilograms of blossoms to yield one kilogram of oil. Absolute, pulled out with solvent, gets there on roughly a seventh of the flowers.
Powder Accord
Talcum, lipstick and warm clean skin
What it is
Nobody grows powder. It is an effect, conjured mostly from orris root, ionones, heliotropin and a musk or two, and the perfumer's aim is a texture rather than a smell: something you feel on the air.
How it smells
Dry, soft, a little sweet: talcum, the inside of a lipstick, warm skin just out of a bath. Orris pulls it cool and rooty, vanilla and heliotropin pull it almond-sweet. It hazes rather than announces.
In perfumery
Powder is connective tissue, running from the heart into the base, rounding off sharp corners and helping a scent bloom outward. Florals, vanillas and musks all soften against it. Some compositions make the haze the whole point.
Good to know
The ionones behind all this were the first synthetics that could convincingly fake a flower, and the flower was violet. That is the trick: it smells less like anything growing than like a dressing table.
Bitter Almond
Marzipan sweetness with a whisper of danger
What it is
Crush a raw bitter almond and it gives off hydrogen cyanide. The marzipan smell is benzaldehyde, the molecule hiding in those kernels and in apricot and peach stones and cherry pits.
How it smells
Sweet, nutty, unmistakably marzipan, with a cool cherry-stone bite and a nod to amaretto. A faint powderiness sits under the nut. It arrives bright and dries into something soft and creamy.
In perfumery
Perfumers keep it in the heart, where it does gourmand work without turning into dessert, sitting easily with vanilla, tonka and powdery iris. Paired with heliotropin it builds the marzipan-cherry centre of dark gourmand orientals.
Good to know
Detective novels are right about one thing: cyanide is often described as smelling of almonds. What you smell in a bottle is not. Distillation or synthesis strips the toxin out and leaves only the fragrant part behind.
White Ambergris
Salt, skin and driftwood, bleached pale
What it is
White is where the journey ends. A waxy mass forms in the gut of a sperm whale, drifts for years, and sun and saltwater bleach it from black toward dusty white, oxidizing near-odorless ambrein into something fragrant.
How it smells
Soft, sweet and marine, the most rounded of the grades. Clean skin, warm musk, tobacco and sea air over a velvety mineral sweetness. Whatever fecal edge the fresher, darker pieces carry has weathered out of it.
In perfumery
Used as a tincture, it works less like a note than like a light behind the others, adding warmth, diffusion and a skin-close glow while making everything around it last. Ambroxan now reproduces the core of that effect.
Good to know
Nothing is taken from a whale: every piece is picked off a beach, often years after it was expelled. The law does not always follow that logic, and the United States bars the trade outright.
Lavender EO
Cool herbal blue from a sunlit hillside
What it is
The flowering tops are cut at peak bloom and go straight to the still, the purple spikes giving up a pale oil. Solvent extraction yields a darker absolute instead. Provence and Bulgaria supply most of it.
How it smells
Sharp and green at first, almost minty, with a cool camphor lift over soft floral sweetness. The dry-down warms into hay, faint vanilla and a powdery calm. True lavender is rounder and sweeter than the lavandin hybrid.
In perfumery
Set it against oakmoss, coumarin and tonka and you have a fougere, the barbershop structure behind countless aromatic masculines. Lavender runs from the top into the heart, cooling bright florals and softening citrus colognes.
Good to know
Those Provence fields the tourists photograph are mostly lavandin, a sterile hybrid that yields far more oil per hectare. True lavender is retreating uphill: a bacterial disease carried by sap-sucking insects has pushed plantings to cooler altitudes.
Coumarin
White crystals that smell of mown hay
What it is
Tonka beans carry it, so do sweet clover, sweetgrass and woodruff, and in pure form it arrives as small white crystals. Almost all the coumarin in perfumery is now made rather than picked.
How it smells
Hay drying in a field, then almond, vanilla and a little tobacco behind it. It is soft rather than loud, powdery, faintly nutty, and it lingers as warmth more than as a smell you can point at.
In perfumery
Base note, and the quiet half of the fougere: lavender up front, oakmoss underneath, coumarin holding the two together. It also sweetens ambers and gourmands, leaving a faint hay hum under perfumes you would never call hay.
Good to know
In 1882 a commercial perfume used a synthetic for the first time, and reportedly ran on about ten percent coumarin. That perfume founded the fougere family. The dose is capped now over skin sensitivity; the habit never broke.
Rose Abs
Jammy, warm rose drawn out with solvent
What it is
Most perfumery rose is one of two: damascena from Bulgaria and Turkey, centifolia from Grasse. Whole blossoms are picked by hand from before sunrise until about ten thirty, then distilled into otto or solvent-extracted into absolute.
How it smells
Deeper and warmer than the otto: jammy, honeyed and slightly smoky, with a waxy softness underneath. It sits closer to the skin and lasts longer than the bright, dewy otto.

Ylang Ylang
Sun-warmed tropical bloom, banana-cream and jasmine
What it is
A drooping yellow star of a flower, hand-picked from a tropical tree and held in the still for fifteen to twenty hours. The run is drawn off in stages, each one a different grade, Extra down to Third.
How it smells
Creamy and heady, jasmine over something like banana custard, with rubber and clove threaded through. Extra grade is the bright, fruity, spicy one; the later fractions go deeper, fatter and faintly medicinal, drying down waxy and round.
In perfumery
In the heart it bridges jasmine, rose and tuberose, and it keeps citrus tops from turning thin. It carries the floral bouquet inside the aldehydic classics, and it is the reason a solar tiare accord smells tropical.
Good to know
In Indonesia the blossoms are scattered over the beds of newlyweds. The name is Tagalog, ilang-ilang, flower of flowers. The most fragrant blooms are taken at dawn, while they are still cool.
Patchouli
Damp earth and dark wood after rain
What it is
Nobody guesses mint, but that is the family: a leafy bush whose leaves are dried and left to cure, close to fermenting, before distillation pulls out an oil thick and dark as syrup.
How it smells
Wet soil, forest floor, an old cellar, with a winey sweetness underneath. Young oil can come at you sharp and green, almost camphorous. Aged oil goes the other way, into chocolate and leather, and stays put for hours.
In perfumery
Almost nothing holds a composition down like it. Chypres and orientals are built on that anchor, and a few drops under rose, vetiver or labdanum will hold the whole thing on skin for hours.
Good to know
Nineteenth-century Kashmiri shawls travelled packed in dried patchouli leaves to keep moths off, and Europeans learned to tell a real one by smell alone. The oil improves with age, which almost no essential oil does, mellowing like wine.
Sri Lankan Santal
Same species as Mysore, grown in Sri Lanka
What it is
The tree behind fabled Mysore sandalwood, Santalum album, also grows in the hills of Sri Lanka. Heartwood and roots from mature trees are ground and steam-distilled into a pale, heavy oil.
How it smells
Creamy and milky, closer to warm skin than to timber. Beside the drier Australian sandalwood it reads sweeter and rounder, with a balsamic depth that edges toward animalic. It has no real opening: it arrives, and it stays.
In perfumery
Base note, and a fixative that softens everything around it. Rose, jasmine, violet and vetiver all sit better on top of it, which is why orientals, chypres and woody florals keep coming back to that santalol drydown.
Good to know
Nobody cuts one young: the heart is worth taking at around thirty years, and because the oil runs richest in the roots the tree is pulled up rather than felled. Mysore was harvested past recovery, which is why Sri Lanka matters.
Siberian Musk
The taiga's own musk, traded as Cabardine
What it is
Old traders called it Cabardine, and the name still does the sorting: true deer musk out of the Siberian taiga, a regional grade alongside the benchmark Tonquin and the Assam and Nepal types.
How it smells
Fresh, it is startling: sharp, ammoniac, close to fecal. Months in alcohol turn that into something warm, dry and faintly leathery, with a powdery radiance that sits on skin like fur. Coarser than Tonquin, and less honeyed.
In perfumery
Fixative and animalic heart, tinctured for months before it met a blend. Less muscone than Tonquin and a rougher edge put it a tier lower, yet it still commanded extraordinary sums back when natural musk underpinned the fougeres.
Good to know
When a modern list says musk, it almost never means this. Synthetics took the word over generations ago, and genuine Cabardine now turns up mostly in vintage bottles and the odd all-natural artisan release.
Malaysian Oud
The jammy, leathered resin of peninsular Malaysian agarwood
What it is
Malaysian distillers call the black resin striations tigerwood, and the storm-struck peninsular jungles it comes from the Land of Lightning. This is old-growth wood distilled to a pure aged oil, never a blended oud accord.
How it smells
It arrives in two layers. Smoke and incense resin on top, then a jammy fruit-leather heart underneath: mahogany sweetness, stewed dark fruit, a gently animalic underbelly over cool mineral amber. Dense and syrupy rather than airy.
In perfumery
A sweet-dark base lending body, leather and resinous gravity without the rasp of cruder ouds. Houses wear it neat or anchor incense builds with it, and its mineral-amber facet bridges into ambergris, rose, honey and spice.
Good to know
Judge it on the heart, not the first minute: the smoke reads sharper at the start, and the fruity leather shows once it settles. Wild peninsular wood is scarce, batches differ, and the oil deepens toward velvet with age.
French Oakmoss
The damp green soul of the forest floor
What it is
Not a moss at all, but a lichen, scraped off oak and other deciduous bark across temperate Europe, Russia and North Africa. Solvents turn the harvested growth into a dark, viscous concrete, then the absolute perfumers actually use.
How it smells
Wet stone, damp bark and something inky and leathery underneath, dry and faintly bitter. This is not fresh green: it is the cool floor beneath old trees after rain has soaked the ground.
In perfumery
The backbone of the chypre: a base note that gives a fragrance its shadow and its spine, classically under bergamot, beside labdanum and patchouli. Anything described as mossy, vintage or green-masculine is usually leaning on it.
Good to know
Oakmoss carries two allergens, atranol and chloroatranol, potent enough that the EU banned them from cosmetics outright. Perfumers use stripped grades now, but it was the earlier cap on the extract that changed how the classic chypre smells.
Pine Tree Moss
Damp forest floor pinned into a bottle
What it is
Perfumery moss is not moss at all. Oakmoss and tree moss are lichens, grey-green crusts scraped off oak and conifer bark, then soaked in solvent until they give up a dark, sticky absolute.
How it smells
Wet bark, leaf litter and cellar stone, with an inky bitterness under it. Tree moss runs drier and more tar-like than oakmoss. Both smell like shade rather than sunlight, cool and green and unmistakably out of doors.
In perfumery
The chypre is built on it: bergamot at the top, labdanum and patchouli below, moss holding the shadow underneath. Take it out and the structure loses its floor. Green, leather and fougere builds lean on it too.
Good to know
Two allergens in oakmoss, atranol and chloroatranol, forced the industry's hand. The great vintage chypres were rebuilt around them: a forest floor reconstructed without the molecules that made it smell like one. Purified grades keep it in play.
Fir
A cold forest breathed in at first light
What it is
One name, two materials. The needles and young twigs steam-distil into a clear, sappy oil; the twigs alone, taken with solvent, give a dark, sticky fir balsam absolute. Balsam, silver and Douglas fir all answer to the name.
How it smells
The distilled oil is green and resinous, sappy almost to fruit: crushed Christmas-tree needles in the hand. The absolute goes deeper and sweeter, jammy, intensely balsamic, warmed with coumarin and a wisp of smoke, and it lasts.
In perfumery
Distilled fir works top to heart, the absolute anchors the base, and between them they build forest, fougere and aromatic-woody accords. It sits well with cedar, lavender, oakmoss and incense, and carries dense coniferous work like Slumberhouse Norne.
Good to know
Douglas fir is not a true fir, and smells it: brighter, closer to citrus. Balsam fir has the odder history: bark blisters yielding Canada balsam, the glass-clear cement that mounted microscope slides because it bends light like glass.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
A Mediterranean rockrose sweats gum through its leaves in summer, dark and sticky enough to glue your fingers together. Harvesters boil or scrape the branches to get it off, then extract that crude gum into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Balsamic warmth, then leather, dried fruit, honey and a curl of smoke. There is something almost ambergris-like in the opening. Hours later it has settled into brown tobacco and worn skin, still going.
In perfumery
Take labdanum out and most amber accords collapse; it is what vanilla and benzoin get built on. It fixes a formula in place, gives chypres and leathers their depth, and sits well with rose, oakmoss and incense.
Good to know
Before there was distillation, there were goats. Herds browsed through cistus scrub all summer, the gum matted into their beards and thighs, and shepherds combed it out. Labdanum is one of the oldest aromatic materials still in use.
Bakhoor Tincture
Compounded Arabian incense on the coal
What it is
Bakhoor is not a single material but a compound: wood chips, most often agarwood, macerated in fragrant oils, resins and sometimes honey or sugar, pressed and matured, then burned in small pieces over charcoal. It is the household incense of the Gulf. As a tincture, bakhoor is steeped in alcohol so that its sweet smoke can sit inside a perfume.
How it smells
Sweet, dense and smoky all at once, quite unlike a single resin. Warm agarwood smoke carries a syrupy, almost candied sweetness from the oils it was soaked in, with rose, amber and spice threading through and a soft powdery finish as the coal cools. It fills a room rather than sitting on skin.
In perfumery
Used as a note to evoke a whole room and a whole ritual rather than one ingredient: the smell of a house being perfumed before guests arrive. It anchors Gulf-facing compositions, pairs with oud, rose and amber, and gives an oriental accord a lived-in, domestic warmth that pure frankincense cannot.
Good to know
Because bakhoor is a recipe, quality varies enormously and the sweetness usually comes from added oils rather than from the wood. It is distinct from its neighbours on an ingredient list: frankincense is a single tree resin, choya ral is a burnt distillate, and bakhoor is a blend that includes several such things at once.
Fragrance Character
It opens sweeter than most fougères: bergamot and bitter almond, rose otto softening the edges, with the powder accord laid over everything from the start. Lavender and coumarin come through smoothed rather than sharp, ylang ylang and patchouli underneath. It stays close to that shape for hours, drying down to santal, musk and oud, with moss and resin beneath.
Longevity
how long it stays on skin
The hourglass reads wear time: how many hours the fragrance keeps speaking before it fades. A bar that barely leaves the start means a few fleeting hours. One that runs the full length carries from morning into evening. Treat it as typical, not promised. Oily skin holds scent far longer than dry.
Sillage
the size of its scent trail
Sillage is French for a ship's wake, and that is exactly what this measures: how much of the scent reaches the room instead of staying on you. Low is a whisper only close friends catch. Enormous fills the room, then keeps filling it after you leave.
Experimental
Built to provoke, not to please
Some perfumes are made to be liked. These are made to be argued about: inky tar, hot rubber, fruit on the turn, metal and fur where you expected flowers. The coin glows for a scent that provokes and dims for one that plays it safe, which is sometimes the point.
Office
Polished, and never louder than the room
Scent is manners in a shared room. At this range it should reach the person across the desk and stop there: tidy citrus, soft musk, pale woods, all of it reading competent and considerate. A glowing coin means nobody has to mention it. A dim one means it travels.
Evening
After dark, when it deepens
Dinner, drinks, the night that runs long. Low light is where ambers, resins and smoky woods stop being polite, and where a plush floral finally blooms. A glowing coin means it is waiting for exactly this hour. A dim one means it did its best work in daylight.
Romantic
Close enough to be felt
A fragrance can hum against skin instead of announcing itself across a table. That is the register here: creamy florals, vanilla, soft musk, a thread of spice, warm enough to make someone lean in. The coin glows when a scent sets that mood and dims when it is more practical than seductive.
Formal
Quiet authority in a dressed-up room
A wedding, a ceremony, a room where everyone has thought about their shoes. What works here is structure, not volume: smooth woods, disciplined florals, soft leather. A glowing coin means it holds its posture all evening. A dim one means it is too casual for the room.
Casual
Easy comfort for unhurried days
Errands, coffee, a slow Saturday with nowhere to be. Nothing here has to impress anyone, so the fit is soft and easy: fresh citrus, light woods, a little warmth off the skin. A glowing coin says yes to all that. A dim one means the fragrance is asking for a bigger night.
Day to Night
where its mood naturally falls
A bar running from sun to moon, reading the hour the fragrance was made for. The more of it that stays gold, the more the scent belongs to daylight and open air. The further the blue reaches back toward the sun, the deeper and warmer it turns: evening, candlelight, low rooms.
Winter
Warmth that carries through cold air
Cold air mutes a fragrance and slows it down, which is why winter belongs to the dense and the warm: resin, smoke, vanilla, leather, ambered spice. The bar reads how well this one pushes back, glowing against the chill instead of thinning out in it.
Spring
Fresh blooms in mild, rising warmth
Mild, humid air lifts a light composition, so the season belongs to dewy florals, green stems, soft powder and citrus you can see through. Alive rather than heavy. The further the green runs along the bar, the more comfortably this one wears in that weather.
Summer
Bright and airy in real heat
Heat does the projecting for you, which is why the wrong perfume turns unbearable by noon. What survives is cool and breathable: sharp citrus, salt air, aromatic herbs, water. Things that refresh instead of cloy. A short bar here means save it for cooler months.
Fall
Spiced warmth for cooling days
As the air cools, the rich materials stop smothering and start reading clearly: dry woods, warm spice, tobacco, amber, fruit gone golden. It is the season perfume turns contemplative. The bar fills according to how naturally this one settles into crisp, cooling days.
Best Worn
Autumn and winter suit it best, by day or into the evening, for relaxed days, dinners out and close company. It suits anyone who likes a fougère soft and powdery, not sharp.
