The Story
Be Mine is a Valentine's release Lost Tribe published to its own store in February 2026, paired with a sibling called St Valentine. The New York house lists a black currant and rose otto opening over two ouds, and states that each 15ml bottle carries more than a gram of that oud blend.
Woody
Dry grain of cut timber
The smell of cedar shavings, sandalwood, and dry vetiver roots, a sanded, resinous warmth with a faint pencil-box rasp. It feels grounded and composed, the quiet backbone that makes a scent read as serious and lasting.
Oud
Dark resinous wood with depth

Iris

Rose

Fruity

Black Currant
Tart purple berries with a sly catty growl
What it is
Black currant is the small dark berry of Ribes nigrum, a shrub native to northern Europe and Asia. Both berries and aromatic buds (cassis) carry the scent; an absolute is solvent-extracted from the buds, while the fruit facet in perfumery is usually rebuilt with aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
Sharp, juicy and tart, a burst of purple-red berry with green leafy edges and a wine-like depth. Its hallmark is a sulphurous, faintly sweaty, animalic catty undertone that keeps it from reading as merely fruity. It opens fresh and biting, then sweetens into jammy darkness.
In perfumery
A top-note material adding fruity sparkle, tartness and a mischievous edge to florals and chypres. The bud absolute deepens rose and lends a green-fruity lift. It headlines bright fruity-floral openers and powers the celebrated cassis-rose accord at the heart of dark, velvety chypres.
Good to know
The signature catty smell comes from sulphur-containing thiol molecules, the same family that gives buchu, grapefruit and tomcat spray their pungency. At a few parts per million these thiols read as ripe fruit; concentrated, they turn startlingly skunky and sharp.
Apple
No apple oil exists, so the note is built
What it is
Apple yields no usable essential oil or absolute, so every apple note in perfumery is constructed rather than extracted. Mainstream houses build it from fruity esters such as Manzanate, a Givaudan material, along with hexyl acetate and ethyl 2-methylbutyrate. All-botanical houses reach instead for Roman chamomile, whose angelate esters carry a genuinely cidery apple sweetness, supported by davana and green materials.
How it smells
The aroma-chemical build is bright and legible, crisp and tart-green with a candied lift, and it holds one clear shape from the first minutes onward. A botanical reconstruction is softer and hazier, honeyed and herbal at the edges, and it drifts as it wears, blooming and receding rather than staying fixed.
In perfumery
Apple lifts fruity florals, chypres, aquatics and gourmand blends, and it sits comfortably beside rose, musk and light woods. Built from esters it needs only a trace, and the green or candied character can be dialled with precision. Built from botanicals it has to be rebalanced by hand, since no single material delivers the effect.
Good to know
Neither route is the fruit, so the honest difference is texture and stability rather than authenticity. Ester-built apple survives soap, detergent and heat, and repeats identically batch to batch. Roman chamomile and davana are costly, vary with harvest and project more quietly, which is why an all-botanical apple remains rare.
Georgian Rose Otto
The sunlit, honey-clear damask of the Caucasus
What it is
Georgian Rose is the otto (steam/hydro-distilled essential oil) of Rosa damascena grown in the valleys of the Caucasus, in the Republic of Georgia. In an all-natural house where rare botanicals are distilled and blended in-house, it appears as a genuine single-origin rose oil rather than a reconstituted rose accord, often set beside other true ottos so each origin keeps its own voice. Being the otto and not the solvent-extracted absolute, it carries the lighter, more crystalline top of the flower rather than the dark, jammy depth that extraction pulls out.
How it smells
Sunny, bright and glowingly warm: a clear honeyed damask laced with a musky-powdery softness and a plethora of shifting honeyed nuances. There is a green, almost rose-geranium lift up top and, in the drydown, the scent of the whole shrub, leaves, stems and petals, rather than petals alone. The honey here is luminous and fresh-jammy, never sticky, with a faint spiciness that keeps it from turning syrupy.
In perfumery
Georgian otto is prized as a transparent, radiant rose that lifts and brightens a composition without weighing it down, which is why it is layered with oud, musk and other roses to add daylight to an otherwise dark blend. In a many-rose blend it can sit among four single-origin rose oils, from Georgia, Afghanistan, Bulgaria and India, contributing the clear, musky-honeyed facet that distinguishes it from its sharper or fruitier siblings. A few drops read clean and floral-fresh; in concentration it turns velvety and powdery without losing its lit-from-within clarity.
Good to know
True Georgian rose otto is a clear, thin oil that congeals at cool room temperature (around 68°F / 20°C) and re-liquefies in the hand, a hallmark of an unadulterated otto. It is distinct from a rose absolute, which is darker, deeper and more wine-jammy, and from synthetic rose accords built on geraniol and damascones, which lack its living green, whole-plant complexity. Like all genuine damask ottos it is precious and costly, hundreds of pounds of blossoms yield a single ounce, so its presence signals real botanical content, not a rose flavoring.
Geranium
A rose with green stems and crushed mint
What it is
Perfumery geranium comes from Pelargonium graveolens and related rose-scented pelargoniums, not the true Geranium genus. Grown in Egypt, China and on Reunion (the prized Bourbon type), the leaves and stems are steam-distilled to yield a green, rosy essential oil.
How it smells
Fresh, green and rosy with a crisp, leafy bite and a cool minty lift. Facets of lemon, rose and a powdery sweetness weave through a herbaceous, slightly peppery body. Bourbon geranium leans richer and rosier, drying down soft, green and faintly fruity.
In perfumery
A heart-note workhorse bridging florals and fougeres, adding rosy-green freshness, lift and a herbal facet read as masculine. It pairs with rose, mint, clove, bergamot and vetiver. It anchors crisp masculine florals and the rosy-green heart of many classic and soliflore geranium compositions.
Good to know
Geranium oil is a common, affordable stand-in for parts of costly rose, sharing the molecule citronellol and rounding out rose accords at a fraction of the price. Reunion's Bourbon geranium, once the global benchmark, has grown scarce as cultivation shifted to Egypt and China.
Lychee Rose Musk
A rose molecule standing in for the fruit
What it is
No commercial lychee extract exists, so the note is always constructed. Its signature comes from cis-rose oxide, a molecule the fruit shares with rose, supported by damascones and fruity esters in the aroma-chemical version. All-natural houses reach the same facet through botanicals that carry rose oxide themselves, chiefly rose otto and rose-scented geranium.
How it smells
Pink and translucent, rosy-grape sweetness over a cool watery brightness with a faintly winey edge. Built from aroma-chemicals it is brighter and sharper, close to candied, and holds one shape from opening to dry-down. Reconstructed from botanicals it is softer and hazier, less fixed, the rose facet breathing and drifting as it wears.
In perfumery
Lychee opens fruity-florals and makes rose accords read younger and more transparent. Its rosy core lets it stitch fruit into a floral heart instead of sitting on top as a separate note. The aroma-chemical version carries further and lasts longer; a botanical reconstruction stays quieter and belongs to the opening.
Good to know
The lychee note reached perfumery from flavour work, where the same rose-oxide construction was already in use. Rose oxide is present in rose otto and geranium oil, which is why lychee and rose sit together so easily. A label naming lychee describes an effect, never an ingredient taken from the fruit.
Red Rose Otto
Thousands of petals distilled to a velvet drop
What it is
The steam-distilled essential oil of Rosa damascena, the deep-pink damask rose grown chiefly in Bulgaria's Rose Valley and around Isparta, Turkey. Blossoms picked from before sunrise are distilled within hours; roughly three to four thousand kilograms of them yield a single kilogram of oil.
How it smells
Deep, honeyed and true to a living rose, warmer and rounder than solvent-extracted rose absolute. It opens fresh and dewy with green, lemony and spicy facets, then deepens into rich petal sweetness carrying a faintly waxy, clove-like and tea-like undertone as it dries.
In perfumery
A heart-note cornerstone lending body, naturalness and romance to florals, chypres and orientals. It pairs with oud, patchouli, sandalwood and geranium. It anchors classic French rose chypres as well as countless Middle Eastern rose-and-oud attars and compositions.
Good to know
Below roughly 22 Celsius rose otto partly solidifies, throwing pale crystalline flakes of stearoptene, a near-odourless waxy fraction from the petals; gentle warming returns it to liquid. By weight, top-grade rose otto has long ranked among the costliest raw materials in perfumery.
Nootka
Dry evergreen breath of the Mediterranean coast
What it is
Cypress oil comes from Cupressus sempervirens, the columnar Mediterranean evergreen lining hills from Italy to the Levant. Fresh needles, twigs and small branches are steam-distilled, ideally in autumn when oil content peaks, yielding a pale yellow to greenish oil at roughly one percent of the plant weight.
How it smells
It opens crisp and terpenic, brighter and drier than pine, with a faint camphor edge. The heart turns clean and woody-green, less sweet than cedar, threaded with a smoky-mineral coolness. The drydown settles into resinous, slightly herbaceous wood, airy rather than heavy.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart modifier prized for dry structure and lift. It sharpens citrus openings, builds coniferous and fougere accords, and lends austere backbone to chypres and aldehydic florals. Some woody compositions place it front and center, and it threads through many incense and forest compositions.
Good to know
Across the Mediterranean and Persia the tall, slender cypress has long symbolized mourning and eternity, planted in cemeteries because its rot-resistant wood seemed to outlast death. Ancient Egyptians carved that durable timber into sarcophagi, and the scent still reads as solemn and meditative.
Cedrat
The ancient knobbly citrus of dry, green light
What it is
Citron is Citrus medica, one of the oldest cultivated citrus species and a genetic ancestor of the lemon. The large, oblong fruit is mostly thick, knobbly, leathery rind with little juice; its essential oil, called cedrat, is cold-pressed from that fragrant peel.
How it smells
Tangy and sparkling like lemon but rounder and more velvety, with light floral nuances and a clean, dry bitterness. It opens crisp and zesty, then reveals a subtle, refined citrus edge that feels less acidic and more polished than common lemon.
In perfumery
A bright top note bringing dynamic, uplifting freshness and a dry citrus facet to colognes and modern citrus accords. It pairs naturally with neroli, petitgrain and herbs, and gives its name, under the French term cedrat, to a whole genre of cedrat scents.
Good to know
The fingered citron variety, Buddha's hand, splits into tendril-like segments and is used in religious offerings across Asia. A separate citron cultivar, the etrog, is one of the four sacred plants of the Jewish autumn festival of Sukkot.
Gardenia Enf
Creamy white bloom with a mushroom heart
What it is
Gardenia is a glossy-leaved evergreen shrub of the coffee family, native to China and Japan, prized for its waxy white flowers. The living bloom yields almost no oil to extraction, so perfumers recreate it through headspace analysis and reconstruction from jasmine, tuberose and aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
Lush, creamy and white-floral, layering jasmine sweetness over tuberose richness. A green, almost buttery freshness opens it, while a curious mushroom-and-coconut facet sits at its core, lending a fleshy, slightly savory depth that keeps the sweetness grounded and lifelike.
In perfumery
A heart note bringing opulent, velvety body to white-floral and tropical compositions. It pairs with tuberose, ylang-ylang, jasmine and coconut, and stars in soliflores built entirely around the bloom.
Good to know
A true gardenia absolute barely exists commercially: the flower yields too little material to extract economically, so nearly every gardenia note is a clever reconstruction. The shrub was named for Scottish-born naturalist Alexander Garden in the eighteenth century.
Jasmine Sambac
The white flower of warm Eastern nights
What it is
Jasmine Sambac is a climbing shrub, Jasminum sambac, in the olive family, cultivated in India, China and the Philippines. Its small white flowers open after dusk, when their scent peaks, and the buds are hand-picked in the early morning, before they unfurl. Solvent extraction yields a waxy concrete, washed with alcohol into the absolute.
How it smells
Brighter, greener and more tea-like than grandiflorum jasmine, with less fruity heaviness. It opens crisp and slightly waxy, almost banana-tinged, then deepens into warm indolic sweetness. That indole carries an animalic, narcotic undertone that turns heady up close yet stays clear and luminous.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for lift and body, blending with rose, tuberose, sandalwood and green tea accords. It anchors white-floral bouquets and rounds sharp citrus. Some night-blooming soliflores build almost entirely on Sambac, and it threads through countless tea-floral compositions.
Good to know
Sambac is the Philippine national flower, sampaguita, strung into garlands and used to scent Chinese jasmine tea. Because the blooms are tiny and picked by hand every morning across a long season, the absolute ranks among the costliest florals in a perfumer's palette.
Osmanthus
Apricot and soft leather in a tiny gold flower
What it is
Osmanthus is an absolute from the tiny orange-gold flowers of Osmanthus fragrans, an evergreen shrub native to China. The hand-gathered blossoms are solvent-extracted into a waxy concrete, which is washed with alcohol to yield the absolute. Most production remains in China, with Guilin a noted center.
How it smells
A fruity-floral with vivid fresh apricot and ripe peach, wrapped in tea-like delicacy and a surprising suede or soft-leather undertone. It opens jammy and candied, then dries toward dried fruit and raisin with a faint smoky, animalic warmth lingering beneath the flowers.
In perfumery
A heart note bridging fruit, flower and leather, lending natural fruitiness without added sweeteners. It pairs with black tea, rose, leather and apricot accords. It defines refined fruity-floral and leathery-tea compositions, and colors many soft, powdery floral blends.
Good to know
It takes roughly a tonne of the minuscule flowers to yield a single kilo of absolute, ranking it among perfumery's more precious florals. In China the blossoms have flavored tea and wine for centuries, and the tree carries associations with love and the harvest moon.
Rosewood
Creamy rose-wood with a peachy glow
What it is
Essential oil of bois de rose, from Aniba rosaeodora, a tree of the laurel family native to the Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru and the Guianas. The name comes from the rosy scent of the freshly cut wood. Oil is steam-distilled from heartwood chips, with leaf distillation now allowing harvest without felling.
How it smells
Sweet, rosy and woody, soft and creamy from its very high linalool content, with a peachy, faintly spicy undertone. More floral than cedarwood and lighter than sandalwood, it opens fresh and slightly camphoraceous before settling into a smooth, warm, balsamic woodiness that feels rounded rather than dry.
In perfumery
A heart note that bridges florals and woods, contributing natural linalool, brightness and a creamy lift. It pairs with rose, jasmine, vetiver and citrus in chypres and woody florals. Brazilian rosewood oil was historically a core ingredient of many of the great aldehydic florals.
Good to know
Overharvesting for its linalool nearly drove Aniba rosaeodora to extinction, and it is now on CITES Appendix II, tightly restricting trade. Genuine rosewood oil is roughly 70 to 90 percent linalool, among the richest natural sources, though much is now replaced by ho wood oil or synthetic linalool.
Jadewood
A dry Australian cypress that anchors the base
What it is
Jade Wood is a trade name rather than a botanical one. The material sold under it is an essential oil steam distilled from the wood of Callitris glaucophylla, the white cypress pine, a conifer that grows across inland Australia. No tree carries the name jade wood in botanical literature.
How it smells
Dry and woody, with a lactonic softness that reads closer to warm milk than to sap. Balsamic and faintly resinous beneath, with little sweetness. Suppliers place it near blue cypress, with quieter echoes of sandalwood and massoia bark. Some houses describe a cooler impression instead: crisp and light rather than dark.
In perfumery
It belongs in the base and works as a fixative, holding a composition together rather than announcing itself. Perfumers reach for it in incense and smoke accords, and beside agarwood and sandalwood, where it extends the woods without crowding them. It also serves as a more affordable stand-in for blue cypress.
Good to know
The tree is better known as a timber than as a perfume material. Its heartwood resists termites, an effect researchers have traced to sesquiterpene compounds in the wood, and it is milled for flooring, fencing and joinery across Australia. The name has no connection to the jade plant, a separate note.
Rose Bulgarian
The fresh dawn breath of the Rose Valley
What it is
The flower of Rosa damascena, grown chiefly around Kazanlak in central Bulgaria's Rose Valley. Blossoms are hand-picked from before sunrise into the morning, then either steam-distilled into rose otto or solvent-extracted into a deep-red absolute. Roughly three to four tonnes of blossoms yield a single kilogram of otto.
How it smells
Bright, dewy and honeyed, with a green lemony lift on top over a spicy, velvety heart. Compared with Turkish rose it reads fresher and clearer. As it settles, a faint clove-like warmth and a waxy, black-tea softness surface beneath the petals.
In perfumery
A heart note prized for transparency and natural radiance, paired with patchouli, oud, sandalwood or fruity notes like lychee. The otto can crystallise in cool weather. It anchors many of the great rose-centered compositions, lending lifelike floral depth.
Good to know
Harvest runs only three to four weeks from mid-May into June, and pickers work before sunrise because the day's heat evaporates the volatile oils. That tiny, weather-dependent window, plus the tonnes of blossoms needed per kilo, makes rose otto one of perfumery's costliest naturals.
Cedarwood EO
Dry pencil shavings and sun-warmed timber
What it is
An essential oil steam-distilled from the wood, shavings and sawdust of several conifers. Main sources are Virginia cedar and Texas cedar, both junipers, plus the true Atlas and Himalayan cedars of the Cedrus genus. The fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood and sawmill byproduct.
How it smells
Dry, woody and warm, the archetype of freshly sharpened pencils and a cedar closet. Virginia cedar is pencil-like and balsamic; Atlas cedar is softer, sweeter, almost honeyed-resinous. Across types runs a clean, slightly smoky, faintly camphoraceous tone that dries to a smooth, sappy warmth.
In perfumery
A versatile heart-to-base note giving dry woody structure, lift and a backbone for other materials. It pairs with vetiver, sandalwood, rose, citrus and incense. Cedar shapes the smoky drydown of woody-floral builds and countless modern woody-amber bases.
Good to know
The cedar of pencils and storage chests is usually botanically a juniper, not a true Cedrus. Cedar-derived molecules like Cedramber and cedryl acetate run through a great many contemporary woody fragrances, alongside wholly synthetic woody-ambers such as Iso E Super, making cedarwood one of perfumery's most quietly ubiquitous building blocks.
Port Oxford
A cold forest breathed in at first light
What it is
Fir scents come from true firs of the genus Abies, especially balsam fir (Abies balsamea) of eastern Canada and silver fir of Europe. Needles and young twigs are steam-distilled into a clear needle oil, or twigs are solvent-extracted into a thick, dark fir balsam absolute.
How it smells
The distilled oil is bright, green and resinous, sappy and almost fruity, with a clean coniferous coolness recalling crushed Christmas-tree needles. The absolute runs deeper and sweeter, jam-like and intensely balsamic, with a coumarin-tinged, slightly smoky warmth that lingers far longer.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart note in the distilled form and a tenacious base in the absolute, fir builds forest, fougere and aromatic-woody accords. It pairs with cedar, lavender, oakmoss and incense, and anchors dense coniferous compositions such as Slumberhouse Norne and many cool-weather woody fragrances.
Good to know
Fir balsam, the sticky oleoresin tapped from blisters on balsam fir bark, was historically prized as Canada balsam, a glass-clear cement for microscope slides and lenses thanks to its refractive index matching crown glass. The same forests supplied resin for both science and scent.
Lavender
Cool herbal blue from a sunlit hillside
What it is
Lavender is a woody Mediterranean shrub in the mint family, mainly Lavandula angustifolia, grown across Provence and Bulgaria. The flowering tops are cut at peak bloom and steam-distilled, the purple spikes yielding a pale essential oil; solvent extraction of the flowers gives a darker, richer absolute.
How it smells
Clean, herbal and aromatic, with a cool camphor lift over soft floral sweetness. The opening is sharp, green, almost minty; the dry-down warms into hay, faint vanilla and a powdery, slightly fruity calm. True angustifolia smells rounder and sweeter than the harsher lavandin hybrid.

A top-to-heart note and the backbone of the fougere family, pairing with oakmoss, coumarin and tonka in barbershop accords. It also softens citrus colognes and bright florals. It anchors the great pioneering aromatic fougeres and countless aromatic masculine scents.

Provence lavender fields draw millions of visitors, yet much commercial oil is actually lavandin, a sterile hybrid yielding far more per hectare. A spreading bacterial disease, phytoplasma decline spread by sap-sucking planthoppers, has pushed true angustifolia plantings higher into cooler mountain altitudes.
Sumatra Oud

Black Meat Santal
The creamy gold standard of fragrant wood
What it is
Heartwood of Santalum album, a slow-growing semi-parasitic tree historically prized from the Mysore region of Karnataka, India. The dense inner wood and roots are chipped and steam-distilled. Fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood, which begins to scent the wood at around ten years and deepens with age; a tree is seldom worth taking before fifteen or twenty.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a rounded woody-sweet body and a faint sour-buttery edge that turns almost lactic. Warm rosy and balsamic facets sit underneath. It opens smooth and unfolds slowly, drying into a quiet, skin-like, persistent woodiness without sharpness or smoke.

What it is
Heartwood of Santalum album, a slow-growing semi-parasitic tree historically prized from the Mysore region of Karnataka, India. The dense inner wood and roots are chipped and steam-distilled. Fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood, which begins to scent the wood at around ten years and deepens with age; a tree is seldom worth taking before fifteen or twenty.
How it smells
Soft, creamy and milky, with a rounded woody-sweet body and a faint sour-buttery edge that turns almost lactic. Warm rosy and balsamic facets sit underneath. It opens smooth and unfolds slowly, drying into a quiet, skin-like, persistent woodiness without sharpness or smoke.

Sweet Mongolian Musk
Sweet, chocolatey, earthy grade of deer musk
What it is
Mongolian musk is genuine deer musk from the Siberian musk deer of the Mongolian and southern Siberian mountain taiga, a CITES-listed regional grade distinct from the prized Tonkin musk of Vietnam. Like all real deer musk it is the dried pod secretion of the male animal, collected as dark grains and tinctured patiently by artisanal natural perfumers.
How it smells
Connoisseurs describe a sweet, almost chocolatey character laced with earthy, spicy and resinous depth, a sandy ambergris-like warmth turned more animalic. It is funkier and muddier than the prettier, more floral Tonkin profile, yet calmer and softer than the darkest, most feral Siberian musk.
In perfumery
Its weight and animalic richness make it a powerful fixative and a centerpiece note in all-natural compositions, where a trace lends brooding sensuality. A handful of artisanal natural houses have offered Mongolian musk tinctures, often pairing them with oud, whose smoky resin its earthy backbone complements beautifully.
Good to know
Tonkin has long been judged the finest musk, with steppe musks read as rougher and more barnyard, too funky for some daily wear. As real deer musk it is CITES restricted and used only by tiny artisanal natural houses. Most so-called musk on the market is unrelated synthetic material.
Iris 80% Irones
Golden lactonic warmth, soft as melting cream
What it is
Butter is churned milk fat, but its perfume note is an accord rather than an extract. Perfumers build it from lactones, the creamy molecules naturally present in dairy, plus diacetyl-type compounds that give cultured butter its rich, fatty smell, sometimes warmed with vanilla and caramel facets.
How it smells
Soft, fatty and milky, with a yellow, creamy warmth and a faint cultured tang. It reads rich and smooth rather than sweet, like butter melting in a warm pan, edging toward toffee and pastry. Lactones give a coconut-adjacent, custardy roundness underneath the fat.
In perfumery
A heart-to-base note adding creamy, rounded texture and a comforting bakery feel. It softens sharp edges and enriches gourmands, pairing with caramel, vanilla, pastry, praline and almond. Lactonic butter facets underpin brioche and croissant accords and lend body to many modern dessert fragrances.

The buttery smell of cultured butter comes largely from diacetyl, a molecule so potent it flavors microwave popcorn and at high doses caused the 'popcorn lung' worker illness. Lactones, the other half of the note, also explain why ripe peaches, coconut and osmanthus share that creamy roundness.
Costus Root
Warm hair and skin, animalic and unsettling
What it is
Costus root oil is steam-distilled or solvent-extracted from the dried roots of Saussurea costus, a tall thistle-like herb of the high Himalayas, known in India as kuth. The aged roots are processed to yield a thick, dark, intensely odorous oil rich in sesquiterpene lactones.
How it smells
Deeply animalic and warm, smelling of unwashed human hair, scalp and worn wool, with a greasy, slightly fatty earthiness. Some find a dry-orris violet facet beneath the funk; others read it as wet dog or old leather. It is dense, lingering and faintly sweet on the dry-down.
In perfumery
Historically a base-note fixative lending startling skin-like warmth and animalic depth to chypres, leathers and orientals, smoothing rough edges and adding lived-in intimacy. It textured many vintage classics. Today perfumers reach for synthetic recreations such as Costus Oliffac to capture its wet-dog, hair-like signature safely.
Good to know
Natural costus has effectively vanished from modern perfumery. IFRA prohibited its oil, absolute and concrete in 2006 as a potent skin sensitizer, and Saussurea costus has been CITES Appendix I protected since 1985 and listed as critically endangered after steep declines from overharvesting.

What it is
The dried seed kernel of Myristica fragrans, an evergreen tree native to Indonesia's Banda Islands and now grown in Grenada and Sri Lanka. The hard brown seed sits inside an apricot-like fruit, wrapped in red mace. It is ground for spice or steam-distilled for oil.
How it smells
Warm, dry and spicy-sweet, with a soft woody body and a faint terpenic, almost camphoraceous lift on top. Beneath the familiar baking-spice warmth runs a slightly resinous, balsamic depth and a cool medicinal edge. It feels cozy yet subtly sharp and pine-like.
In perfumery
A top-to-heart spice adding warmth, lift and a gourmand-ambery glow without overt sweetness. It pairs with vanilla, tobacco, lavender and woods. Nutmeg anchors spice-and-ginger pairings and forms the classic warm-spice signature of barbershop fougeres.
Good to know
Nutmeg contains myristicin, a compound that is mildly psychoactive and toxic in large doses. In the 1600s the Banda Islands were the world's only source, and control of that trade sparked colonial wars between the Dutch, Portuguese and English.
Cedar Atlas
Dry mountain wood, sweet balsam and pencil shavings
What it is
A true conifer wood from Cedrus atlantica, native to the Atlas and Rif Mountains of Morocco and Algeria at high altitude. The essential oil is steam-distilled from chipped wood, sawdust and shavings, much of it upcycled from the lumber trade rather than from freshly felled trees.
How it smells
Warm, dry and woody with a sweet balsamic core, often likened to sharpened pencils and freshly cut timber. A camphoraceous, faintly smoky-resinous lift sits over an earthy base. Drier and more austere than soft, creamy Virginian cedar, it dries down clean and tenacious.
In perfumery
A workhorse base note giving structure, dryness and lasting woody warmth, also valued as a fixative. It pairs with rose, vetiver, patchouli, oakmoss and labdanum, underpinning chypre and woody-oriental builds. It contributes to many classic masculine and ambery wood compositions.
Good to know
The oil is rich in himachalene sesquiterpenes, with beta-himachalene the dominant component at roughly a third of the oil. Cedrus atlantica was listed Endangered by the IUCN in 2013, so distilling oil from sawmill offcuts has become the more responsible feedstock.
