Grief
Grief starts somewhere you recognise, floral and legible, and then quietly stops being that. The spice arrives, the fruit turns, and the thing you thought you had identified has moved on without telling you.
The Story
The house describes him as a Berlin-based Georgian perfumer and olfactory artist whose creations go beyond traditional fragrance into art, emotion and philosophy, each piece carrying a carefully composed dramaturgy and a complex scent structure, with notes unconventional enough to surprise experienced noses.
Bidzina Kanchaveli is a Georgian artist, dramaturg and film-maker who now runs a small perfume atelier in Berlin. For the Emotions Series he did not work from a brief. By his own account he waited, through self-observation, for the moment a particular emotional state became tangible, and composed from inside it. Four fragrances came out of that method: Fear, Hate, Grief and Envy. He is explicit that the compositions move away from traditional and classical perfume structures, drawing instead on the olfactory language of the human body.
Of Grief he writes that the composition first appears clear and recognisable, that the nose assumes it understands the scent, and that perception begins to shift at exactly that moment. New and unexpected notes emerge as the familiar accords fade, layer by layer, until what began as familiar reveals a less predictable dimension. The clarity of the opening, he says, proves to be an artful illusion.
Every bottle is a hand-made porcelain sculpture, marked by the atelier as limited, handmade and unicat, a single unique piece. The package is printed Extrait de Parfum, 15 ml, 60% Vol, and arrives sealed in paper you cut open along a marked line.
The Nose
Composed by Bidzina Kanchaveli, who also created the other three Emotions Series extraits and the concrete-bottled Color Series, and who makes every bottle by hand in his Berlin atelier.
Floral
Petals in soft full bloom
The rounded, dewy scent of flowers in bloom, soft and slightly sweet with a powdery, nectar-like glow. It reads romantic and gentle, conjuring a garden in late spring and a feeling of lightness against the skin.
Fruity
Ripe orchard flush of juice
The succulent sweetness of peach, pear, apple, or berry, soft and dewy with a nectar-like ripeness distinct from sharp citrus. It brings a playful, mouthwatering roundness that feels youthful, juicy, and lighthearted.
Warm Spicy
Glowing embers of the spice drawer
The rounded heat of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, dry and slightly resinous, like a baking pantry rather than a sharp kitchen. It creates a flushed, enveloping warmth that feels intimate and cool-weather, hugging the skin from within.
Sweet
Edible warmth on the skin
A rounded, sugary character that suggests caramel, honey, or spun candy without any single one dominating. It reads as comforting and indulgent, the gourmand pull that makes a fragrance feel soft, inviting, and almost good enough to taste.
Sour
A clean acid bite
The sharp, mouth-watering edge of unripe fruit and fresh citrus juice, green and slightly astringent. It works as a counterweight rather than a subject, cutting through sweetness and giving an opening its lift and clarity before the heart arrives.
Floral Notes
Blossom without a single name attached
What it is
Floral notes is the term used when a composition reads clearly as flowers but the house has not named which ones. It can stand for a single blossom held deliberately vague, or for a bouquet built from several materials that were never meant to be picked apart.
How it smells
Soft, petalled and lightly sweet, somewhere between rose, jasmine and lilac without settling on any of them. Depending on the blend it leans fresh and dewy, powdery and cosmetic, or heady and almost narcotic in the heart.
In perfumery
Naming a flower invites comparison, so perfumers working conceptually often leave the floral unlabelled and let the wearer place it. It is also honest shorthand when a floral effect comes from a dozen materials rather than one absolute.
Good to know
An unnamed floral is not a vaguer scent, only a less-disclosed one. Trust your own reading of it: what you notice first is usually the material the perfumer weighted most heavily.
Spicy Notes
The warm crackle that wakes a fragrance up
What it is
An accord category rather than one material, built from spice plants: clove buds, cinnamon bark, black pepper berries, nutmeg seed, cardamom pods and ginger rhizome. Aromas are won by steam distillation or CO2 extraction of the dried part, or matched with aroma-chemicals like eugenol and cinnamic aldehyde.
How it smells
Warm, dry and prickling, with a faint heat on the nose. Pepper reads sharp and crisp, clove medicinal and numbing, cinnamon sweet and woody, nutmeg dusty. The blend opens bright and biting, then settles into rounded, ambery warmth as the volatile edge burns off.
In perfumery
Usually a heart or top accent adding energy, contrast and warmth. It bridges citrus tops to woody-ambery bases and animates florals and orientals. It pairs with rose, amber, leather and tobacco. It is showcased in pepper-and-clove spice studies and in the great spicy orientals of the twentieth century.
Good to know
The medieval spice trade made these materials worth more than gold by weight, driving voyages that redrew world maps. Clove eugenol and cinnamic aldehyde are flagged skin sensitizers, so IFRA caps their use, nudging perfumers toward gentler synthetic spice molecules.
Fruity Notes
An orchard in a bottle, sun-warmed and dripping
What it is
An umbrella term for accords evoking edible fruit beyond citrus: peach, apple, pear, berry, plum, lychee. Few come from real fruit, which yields little usable scent. Most are built from aroma-chemicals such as gamma-undecalactone for peach or ethyl maltol for candied warmth, blended into convincing impressions.
How it smells
Juicy, sweet and round, spanning crisp green apple and pear, jammy red berry, syrupy plum and tropical lychee. Lactones lend creamy, skin-of-the-fruit softness while esters add nail-polish brightness on top. Most accords shift from fresh, sappy bite to candied warmth as they dry down.
In perfumery
Usually a top-to-heart accent adding lift, sweetness and approachability, softening woods or brightening florals. It is foundational to fruity-florals and gourmands. The style shows in the berry-patchouli of the landmark orientals, the crisp apple of modern fresh fruity-florals, and the famous peach-skin warmth threading through the great vintage chypres.
Good to know
The peach in classic perfume is rarely real peach. Gamma-undecalactone, nicknamed Aldehyde C-14 although it is chemically a lactone, was first synthesized in 1908. A pioneering perfumer used it in a 1919 chypre, giving the scent its signature fuzzy, fruity warmth.
Fragrance Character
A floral opening into a spicy heart and a fruity base, with a sour green edge running underneath that keeps the sweetness in check. Its whole structure is built to be misread at first and re-read an hour later.
Longevity
how long it stays on skin
This gauge reads the expected wear time, how many hours the fragrance keeps speaking on skin before it fades. A marker near the low end means a few fleeting hours, while a marker pushed to the far end promises a scent still present from morning into night.
Sillage
the size of its scent trail
This reads how far the fragrance reaches beyond you and the trail it leaves behind. Low sits soft against the skin, an intimate whisper noticed only up close; high climbs through moderate and strong toward enormous, filling a room and lingering in the air after you have left it.

Why the Grief Decant
Each one is a single porcelain sculpture holding 15 ml of extrait at 60%, made and sealed by hand in Berlin and sold as a unique piece. A decant is the sane way to live with something this uncompromising before committing to the object.
