Alejandro Acosta
La Candelaria
Guava and mango cut with lime, and then, improbably, coffee with hot milk. Palo santo and cinnamon give it smoke and spice, white flowers lift it, and Virginia cedar holds the floor. Tropical fruit and a morning café in the same breath.
The Story
Alejandro Acosta is an artist first and calls himself one, not a perfumer. La Candelaria belongs to his Malasombra project, and each bottle is a hand-sculpted, hand-painted olfactory sculpture, this one topped with a parrot's head. He blends the juice himself from natural oils and tinctures alongside modern materials.
Production is very small and every piece varies slightly in colour and shape, which the house says plainly. The name points to the Virgin of Candelaria and to the old quarter of Bogotá that carries it.
The house publishes the materials as a single list rather than a top-heart-base pyramid, and that is how they are shown here.

Tropical
Sun-warmed fruit and creamy bloom
A juicy swell of ripe mango, pineapple, and overripe banana laced with coconut milk and sticky white petals. It smells of heat on bare skin, suntan lotion, and fruit left to soften in the sun, breezy and indulgent at once.
Fruity
Ripe orchard flush of juice
The succulent sweetness of peach, pear, apple, or berry, soft and dewy with a nectar-like ripeness distinct from sharp citrus. It brings a playful, mouthwatering roundness that feels youthful, juicy, and lighthearted.
Coffee
Dark roast, bitter and warm
Roasted beans and fresh black coffee, bitter and toasted with a faintly burnt edge. It reads adult rather than sweet, which is why perfumers use it to give a gourmand its spine, or to add warmth and shadow to leather, tobacco and woods.
Woody
Dry grain of cut timber
The smell of cedar shavings, sandalwood, and dry vetiver roots, a sanded, resinous warmth with a faint pencil-box rasp. It feels grounded and composed, the quiet backbone that makes a scent read as serious and lasting.
Sweet

Mango
Ripe mango, golden and sun-drenched
What it is
A ripe golden fruit note, dense with juice. Mango brings a sun-drenched opulence to an opening.
How it smells
Sweet, smooth and tropical, with a creamy ripeness under the shine. It feels indulgent without turning syrupy.
In perfumery
Mango gives warmth and radiance to spices, amber and woods. It is a luxurious way to open a rich composition.

Lime
Green citrus zest with a bitter peel snap
What it is
Lime oil comes from the small green fruit of Citrus aurantiifolia (key lime) and Citrus latifolia (Persian lime), grown in Mexico, Peru and the West Indies. It is either cold-pressed from the fresh peel, like other citrus, or steam-distilled from whole crushed fruit, mostly for the soft-drink trade.
How it smells
Cold-pressed lime is sharp, juicy and bitter, full of fresh peel oils that smell like a just-cut wedge. The distilled grade is sweeter, smoother and almost candied, with a cola-and-soda lift. Both fade fast into a faint green, slightly soapy dryness.
In perfumery
A sparkling top note prized for instant freshness and effervescence, lime opens colognes, aromatic fougeres and tonic accords. It cuts richness and pairs with basil, vetiver, mint and rum, lending its zing to sun-drenched citrus colognes and countless gin-and-tonic style summer fragrances.
Good to know
Cold-pressed lime is strongly phototoxic; its furanocoumarins, such as bergapten, can scorch sun-exposed skin, so IFRA tightly caps its use. Steam distillation leaves those compounds behind, giving a sun-safe but sweeter oil, which is why many lime fragrances smell more of soda than fresh peel.
Café con Leche
Hot milk poured into black coffee
What it is
Coffee and scalded milk in roughly equal parts, the standard morning drink across Spain and Latin America. In perfumery it is an accord rather than an extraction: roasted coffee absolute is real and very strong, but the milk half has to be built.
How it smells
Roasted and bitter at the edges, rounded and sweet through the middle. The milk takes the burnt sharpness off the coffee and leaves something warm and lactonic, closer to breakfast than to dessert.
In perfumery
Coffee absolute is dark, thick and dominant, so it is used sparingly and almost always softened. Pairing it with lactones and a little sugar gives the café con leche effect and makes coffee wearable rather than aggressive.
Good to know
Coffee is one of the few gourmand notes that reads adult rather than sweet, which is why it appears in leathers and tobaccos as often as in dessert compositions.
Palo Santo
Cinnamon
Red bark warmth dusted with sweet fire
What it is
Cinnamon is the dried inner bark of evergreen Cinnamomum trees. True Ceylon cinnamon, C. verum, comes from Sri Lanka; the coarser, cheaper cassia from C. cassia is common in food. Bark strips are peeled, curled into quills, and steam-distilled into a bark oil rich in cinnamaldehyde.
How it smells
Warm, sweet and dry-spicy, with a glowing red-hot quality from cinnamaldehyde and a soft clove-like nuance from eugenol. Ceylon bark is rounder, faintly floral and refined; cassia is sharper and more biting. The dry-down feels woody, balsamic and faintly leathery.
In perfumery
A heart-note spice giving oriental and gourmand scents their cozy heat, it pairs with vanilla, amber, rose, apple and tobacco. Used sparingly, it adds glow without sting. It marks the classic spicy oriental and the spiced heart of many autumn fragrances.
Good to know
Cinnamaldehyde and related compounds are skin sensitizers, so IFRA strictly caps cinnamon bark oil in fragrance. Once worth more than its weight in gold, cinnamon helped drive Portuguese and later Dutch control of Ceylon; the Dutch even burned stockpiles to keep prices high.
White Flowers
The heady, indolic chorus of summer blooms
What it is
Not one plant but a family of pale, fleshy-petaled blossoms gathered at peak openness: jasmine, tuberose, gardenia, orange blossom, ylang-ylang and magnolia. Their scent is captured as solvent-extracted absolutes, by steam distillation, or by headspace analysis that reconstructs the living flower's aroma synthetically.
How it smells
Creamy, opulent and warm, with a narcotic depth from naturally occurring indole, which lends an animalic, almost overripe edge beneath the sweetness. Facets range from milky-coconut tuberose to green mushroomy gardenia to honeyed jasmine. It opens lush and intoxicating, drying down softer and skin-like.
In perfumery
A commanding heart accord that carries sillage and sensuality, often cut with citrus or musk to tame its richness. Tuberose anchors some of the most famous floral bombshells, while jasmine and tuberose drive the most opulent white-floral compositions. The accord reads romantic, full-bodied and unmistakably floral.
Good to know
Indole, the molecule giving white florals their heady darkness, also smells of mothballs and decay when isolated; natural jasmine absolute contains roughly 2.5 percent of it. In trace amounts it reads as living-flower realism, but a heavy hand turns a jasmine accord faintly fecal.
Virginia Cedar
Dry pencil-shaving warmth from the eastern redcedar
What it is
Oil from Juniperus virginiana, the eastern redcedar, a juniper rather than a true cedar, growing across the eastern United States. Sawmill shavings and wood waste are steam-distilled into cedarwood Virginia oil, rich in cedrol and the cedrenes; the same wood traditionally made lead pencils.
How it smells
Dry, soft and woody, smelling distinctly of freshly sharpened pencils and cedar closets. It opens clean and faintly sweet with a balsamic edge, then dries into a smooth, mildly resinous, pencil-shaving warmth, gentler and rounder than the sharper Atlas or Texas cedars.
In perfumery
A versatile base and heart note adding dry woody backbone, fixative power and structure to chypres, fougeres and masculine woods. It blends with vetiver, sandalwood, rose and citrus and underpins countless wood accords; crystalline cedrol is isolated from it for cleaner woody touches.
Good to know
Eastern redcedar oil long repelled moths and insects, the reason cedar chests and closet liners are cut from it. Its abundance as a pencil-mill and sawmill byproduct makes it one of perfumery's most affordable and sustainable woody materials, distilled in large industrial volumes.
Ginkgo
Cool green leaf with a mineral edge
What it is
Ginkgo biloba is the last surviving species of an order of trees that predates the dinosaurs, effectively unchanged for two hundred million years. The fan-shaped leaves are the source of the note; the fruit is another matter entirely.
How it smells
Cool, green and slightly bitter, with a mineral edge and none of the sweetness of a floral green. It reads as leaf rather than grass or stem, dry and faintly medicinal.
In perfumery
Rare, and used for texture rather than as a subject. It lends a green opening an ancient, unfamiliar quality that mint or violet leaf cannot, and it holds up well against woods and resins.
Good to know
The fruit contains butyric acid, the compound behind rancid butter, which is why cities plant only male ginkgo trees. The leaf carries none of it.
Fragrance Character
Tropical fruit dominates, with a genuine coffee-and-milk accord underneath that is the signature of the thing, then wood and a soft sweetness. Accords are read from the published material list, since no aggregator has scored it.
Longevity
how long it stays on skin
