Yellow
Yellow puts the leather first and the citrus second, which is the wrong way round and exactly why it works. Bright peel cutting across tanned hide, dry wood holding the floor, a little smoke and something animal at the edges.
The Story
The house describes him as a Berlin-based Georgian perfumer and olfactory artist whose creations go beyond traditional fragrance into art, emotion and philosophy, each piece carrying a carefully composed dramaturgy and a complex scent structure, with notes unconventional enough to surprise experienced noses.
The Color Series sits apart from the Emotions Series: eau de parfum rather than extrait, 30 ml rather than 15, and a flacon hand-cast in concrete, here a heavy cylinder, rather than sculpted in porcelain.
Kanchaveli's stated position holds across both lines: he does not work as a classical perfumer, is not interested in recombining existing scent ideas, and treats scent as a tool that acts on perception, memory and inner states rather than as an ornament.
The Nose
Composed by Bidzina Kanchaveli, who also created the other three Emotions Series extraits and the concrete-bottled Color Series, and who makes every bottle by hand in his Berlin atelier.
Woody
Dry grain of cut timber
The smell of cedar shavings, sandalwood, and dry vetiver roots, a sanded, resinous warmth with a faint pencil-box rasp. It feels grounded and composed, the quiet backbone that makes a scent read as serious and lasting.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and skin
The dry, smoky scent of tanned hide, edged with birch tar, tobacco, and a faint bitter rasp. It feels confident and worn-in, evoking a well-loved jacket, suede gloves, and a quiet sense of authority on the skin.
Citrus
First bright zest of morning
The juicy, rind-snapping brightness of lemon, bergamot, and orange peel, tart and effervescent with a clean bitter edge. It opens a scent with instant lift and sparkle, fresh and energizing, evaporating quickly like sunlight on water.
Animalic
Warm skin, musk and muscle
A raw, body-warm muskiness that reads of skin, hair, and fur, sometimes sweet and powdery, sometimes sharp and faintly feral. It feels primal and intimate, blurring the line between perfume and the person wearing it.
Fresh
Clean air after cool water
A crisp, transparent brightness that suggests cool water, washed skin, and open air, often laced with a zesty or aquatic lift. It feels clean and weightless, instantly cooling and uncomplicated, like stepping outside after a rain.
Smoky
Charred wood and rising embers
The dry, charred scent of burning wood, smoldering incense, and lingering ash, sometimes tarry, sometimes wispy and gray. It feels brooding and atmospheric, conjuring a dying fire and a cool current of air carrying its last breath.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and animal warmth
What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Citrus
Cold peel oil and a quick bright flash
What it is
Citrus covers the oils pressed from the rind of lemon, bergamot, orange, mandarin, grapefruit and lime. The oil sits in glands in the peel and is cold-pressed mechanically rather than distilled, which is why it smells so close to the living fruit.
How it smells
Sharp, clean and immediately recognisable, a zesty brightness with a bitter oily edge behind it. It is the fastest thing in perfumery to arrive and among the fastest to leave, which is exactly what makes an opening feel like an opening.
In perfumery
Citrus is the classic top note and the whole basis of eau de cologne. It gives lift, cuts through richness and buys a composition a few minutes of clarity before the heart takes over. Perfumers anchor it with woods or musks when they want it to last.
Good to know
Most citrus oils are phototoxic in their natural state, so bergaptene-reduced versions are used at the levels modern perfumery requires. The trade-off is a slightly cleaner, less shadowed citrus than in vintage formulas.
Woody Notes
The grain and warmth of trees themselves
What it is
A category rather than a single material, covering aromas from tree woods, roots and bark plus synthetics that extend them. It spans sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, guaiac and patchouli, drawn by steam distillation or solvent extraction, alongside lab-made woody-ambers like Iso E Super, made entirely by chemical synthesis.
How it smells
Dry to creamy, evoking sawn timber, pencil shavings, fresh resin and sun-warmed bark. Cedar reads pencil-sharp, sandalwood milky and smooth, vetiver earthy and rooty, guaiac smoky-sweet. As a group the impression is grounding, textured and faintly smoky, the backbone many compositions stand on.
In perfumery
Mostly heart and base material, woody notes give structure, longevity and a natural backbone tying a composition together. They support nearly every family, anchoring florals, ambers and fougeres. Modern woody-amber molecules drive countless contemporary scents, the dry cedar-vetiver register among them.
Good to know
Much of today's woodiness is synthetic, partly because natural sandalwood and rosewood were overharvested into protected status. A single molecule, Iso E Super, grew so dominant that an entire cult fragrance was built around it almost neat, near-imperceptible up close yet glowing on skin.
