Grey is the prized intermediate grade: aged far longer than fresh black but not weathered all the way to the pale, near-spent white. Artisanal houses build whole ambergris lines on grey lumps cellared for decades (a cornerstone piece may have sat in a royal patron's personal collection for some forty years), while others lean on brown-grey-white qualities to temper raw black. This is genuine beach-found ambergris, tinctured in alcohol and matured for months, never the Ambrox/Cetalox (semi-synthesised from clary sage) that stands in for it commercially.

Brown Ambergris

Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the gut of the sperm whale, thought to coat the indigestible squid beaks it swallows. Produced by perhaps one percent of whales, it is expelled and drifts for years at sea, oxidizing under sun and salt before washing ashore as lumps.

Oud from Sri Lanka
Ceylon's green, spiced agarwood from a different tree
What it is
Sri Lankan (Ceylon) oud is distilled not from the Aquilaria trees that yield Hindi, Cambodi, and Borneo oils, but from Gyrinops walla (locally called Walla Patta), a slender hardwood endemic to Sri Lanka's wet-zone forests, including the protected Sinharaja rainforest. Genuine artisanal versions are true single-origin hydro-distillations of resin-suffused heartwood, not reconstructed accords. Because resinous wood appears in only a small fraction of mature trees and the species is under growing conservation pressure in Sri Lanka, the material surfaced commercially for a brief window and is now scarce.
How it smells
This is the bright, zesty, sour-fruity face of oud: lighter, higher-pitched, and more aromatic than the heavy oils of the mainland. Real Ceylon distillations open green and almost tropical (fresh frangipani and cooling mimosa over a faint marine salinity), laced with a dry, ambiguous spice that sits somewhere between cinnamon and pink pepper. Beneath the lift runs a clean resinous core with flickers of lemon blossom and a touch of medicinal bitterness, never the fecal funk of Hindi nor the syrupy sweetness of Cambodi.

Distilling Walla Patta is technically unforgiving; it demands precise control of temperature curves and condenser design to preserve the volatile green-citrus top, which is why poorly made Ceylon oils smell flat or sour-off. Treat it as a collector's curiosity: Gyrinops has sat on CITES Appendix II since January 2005, and since 2012 Sri Lanka has banned the export of the tree's timber, tissue and extracts, so almost nothing new leaves the island. Bouya Oud
Wild green oud from the last frontier
What it is
Oud distilled from wild Gyrinops and Aquilaria filaria trees in the rainforests of Papua and West New Guinea, a region only tapped for agarwood since the late 1990s. Its dense, lignin-heavy heartwood demands long water soaks and high-temperature steam distillation to surrender its oil.

Papua agarwood comes from a young, tightly quota-managed supply, with oil yields often a fraction of a percent, which is why genuine distillate is scarce and costly. Aquilaria and Gyrinops are CITES-listed. Anything labeled Papua oud in an affordable mass fragrance is a synthetic accord, never the real oil.
Vanilla

Dmitry Bortnikoff는 다른 하우스는 좀처럼 구하지 못하는 천연 원료로, 느리고 장인적인 방식을 고수한다. 옛 방식 그대로 발효하고 증류한 진짜 인디안 우드, 몇 달에 걸쳐 팅크처한 Deer Musk, Sandalwood에 그대로 증류해 넣은 허니 톤 Rose까지. 그 결과는 피부 위에서 살아 숨쉬듯, 따뜻하고 살짝 거친 느낌을 낸다.
