Roja Dove Decants and Samples

British opulence at its most unapologetic. Diaghilev's grand chypre and Enigma's plush fruity floral, decanted from bottles priced like jewellery.

A 100 ml bottle of Roja Dove Diaghilev is $1,591. A 2 ml decant of the same parfum is $35, and Haute Luxe, the $3,500 crown of the range, can be claimed one millilitre at a time. That is the sane way into the most unapologetic house in British perfumery.

Roja Dove is the house you reach for when you want a fragrance to feel like an event. The London house, founded in 2011, is built on extrait strength concentrations and the costliest naturals, which is what makes the juice so rich and the bottles so dear. These are dense, deliberate compositions that fill a room and stay on a scarf for days. There is nothing shy or minimal here.

Every decant is poured from a bottle bought at full retail from the house, never the grey market, drawn to order with lab grade Socorex syringes and sealed the day it ships.

The three we pour, ranked by performance

Fragrance Character Logged longevity Sillage Decant from
Diaghilev Cumin and citrus over oakmoss, civet and leather 10 to 12 hours Enormous $35 (2 ml)
Enigma parfum Rose and jasmine over cognac and tobacco 8 to 10 hours Strong $39 (2 ml)
Oceania Lavandin and citrus herbs over jasmine sambac 6 to 8 hours Moderate $18 (2 ml)

The range, bottle by bottle

Diaghilev is the masterpiece and the pick if you only try one: a carnal jolt of cumin and citrus that settles into a powdery heart of peach, jasmine and tuberose, then burns down through oakmoss, civet, leather and vanilla, one of the richest bases in modern perfumery. Logged at 10 to 12 hours with enormous sillage, it is evening wear with real gravity, for the wearer who wants a grand chypre and no apologies. $35 for 2 ml.

Enigma parfum is the plush, romantic middle of the range. Bergamot, lemon and mandarin open onto rose, jasmine and neroli, then dry down to cognac, tobacco, sandalwood, vanilla and ambergris, a warm and polished trail logged at 8 to 10 hours with strong sillage. $39 for 2 ml.

Oceania is the daytime Roja. Lavandin, grapefruit, rosemary and thyme lift a soft heart of jasmine sambac and violet over vetiver, labdanum and moss, fresh but never thin, logged at 6 to 8 hours with moderate sillage. At $18 for 2 ml it is also the lowest-priced way into the house.

How to start

Start with a 2 ml of Diaghilev, $35, and give it a full evening: the drydown is where the money went. If you want the house in daylight, Oceania at $18 is the easy add, and Enigma parfum at $39 is the plush middle ground. When one of them keeps ending up on your skin, size up to a 5 ml or 10 ml before you think about a flacon.
