Labels of Feelings
The Story
The house states a maturation of two months and a maceration of eleven months for this one, more than a year of settling in all. Adi ale Van supplied the vision, the story and the hand craft in Romania; the Sicilian perfumer Antonio Alessandria composed the juice, an extrait at twenty-five percent.
Fruity
Ripe orchard flush of juice
The succulent sweetness of peach, pear, apple, or berry, soft and dewy with a nectar-like ripeness distinct from sharp citrus. It brings a playful, mouthwatering roundness that feels youthful, juicy, and lighthearted.
Woody

A soft, resinous glow built from labdanum, benzoin, and vanilla, sweet but dusky, like sun-warmed tree sap with a hint of incense smoke. It radiates a cozy, golden heat that wraps close to the skin and lingers.
Sweet
Edible warmth on the skin
A rounded, sugary character that suggests caramel, honey, or spun candy without any single one dominating. It reads as comforting and indulgent, the gourmand pull that makes a fragrance feel soft, inviting, and almost good enough to taste.
Passionfruit
Tart tropical passionfruit, vivid and juicy
What it is
A vivid tropical fruit note, tart and golden. Passionfruit brings an exotic juiciness few other fruits can match.
How it smells
Tangy, sweet and mouthwatering, with a ripe tropical pulp character. It crackles at the top of a fragrance like cut fruit.
In perfumery

Blackcurrant Buds Absolute
Green, catty sparkle from a winter bud
What it is
Not the berry but the bud. Blackcurrant buds absolute, bourgeons de cassis, is solvent-extracted from the resinous, unopened buds of Ribes nigrum, gathered from the bare bushes in late winter before the leaves break. Burgundy is the classic source. The extraction gives a concrete, then a dark green absolute.
How it smells
Fiercely green and sharp, nothing like sweet blackcurrant syrup. There is fruit in it, tart and slightly sulphurous, but it arrives wrapped in crushed leaf, blackcurrant twig and an unmistakable animalic tang often described as catty. Diluted right down it turns bright, juicy and faintly minty.
In perfumery
A top-note material of enormous power, used in trace amounts to put a green, fruity flash into florals and chypres and to give rose an electric lift. It pairs with rose, galbanum, mint, grapefruit and vetiver. Overdose it and the catty facet takes the whole composition.
Good to know
The catty character comes from sulphur compounds, chiefly a thiol nicknamed cat ketone, which the nose picks up at vanishingly small concentrations. The same family of molecules is what gives sauvignon blanc and boxwood their smell, and it is why a blackcurrant note can read as fresh and feral at once.
Plum
Jammy plum, dark and velvety
What it is
A dark, velvety fruit note, rich with juice. Plum brings a ripe, jammy elegance to classic compositions.
How it smells
Sweet and jammy with a wine-like depth, ripe flesh over a soft candied shine. It feels plush rather than playful.
In perfumery
Plum enriches chypres, roses and ambers with dark fruity warmth. It stays legible even in grand, layered compositions.
Good to know
Plum mellows beautifully on skin, easing from bright jam into a smooth dried-fruit warmth.
Juniper Tar
Charred juniper wood distilled down to tar
What it is
Juniper tar, or cade oil, is not distilled with steam but burnt out of the wood. Branches and heartwood of Juniperus oxycedrus, the prickly juniper of the Mediterranean scrub, are heated without air until they break down, yielding a thick black tar. Perfumery uses the rectified oil drawn from it.
How it smells
Smoke first, and a harsh kind: creosote, hot tar, a doused campfire, the inside of a smokehouse. Underneath runs something phenolic and medicinal, close to coal tar soap and old leather, with a dry resinous woodiness. There is no sweetness in it and no fruit.
In perfumery
A base material behind most convincing leather and smoke accords, working alongside birch tar, styrax and labdanum. It is dosed in traces because it swallows what sits near it, and it is often used to darken fruit or florals, dragging a bright opening down into something charred.
Good to know
Crude cade oil is no longer permitted in European cosmetics because pyrolysis leaves polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons behind; only the rectified grade is used. Long before perfumery took it up, the tar was a traditional remedy painted on livestock and on human skin complaints, which is where its medicinal reputation comes from.
Lily-of-the-Valley
The white spring bell that no flower will surrender
What it is
Convallaria majalis, a shade-loving woodland perennial of Europe and Asia bearing tiny nodding white bells in spring. The bloom yields no usable essential oil, so its scent, called muguet, is built entirely from aroma-chemicals such as hydroxycitronellal and Lyral-type molecules.
How it smells
Fresh, green and dewy: cool white-floral sweetness laced with crushed leaf-stem sap and a watery, rain-on-petals transparency. It opens bright and crystalline, never heady, then dries soft, clean and slightly soapy with a faint lemony-green glow.
In perfumery
A heart note central to spring florals and the radiant muguet accord. It lifts rose, jasmine and lilac and lends green sparkle to aldehydic blends. It defines the great mid-century muguet soliflores and brightens countless feminine bouquets.
Good to know
Every part of the plant is poisonous, carrying cardiac glycosides. Because it cannot be extracted, muguet is one of perfumery's great reconstructions; the EU's 2021 ban on the sensitizer Lyral pushed perfumers toward newer molecules like Florol and Mugetanol to rebuild the bell.
Magnolia
Lemon-cream petals breathing over a southern garden
What it is
Magnolia is the bloom of trees in the genus Magnolia, among the oldest flowering plants on Earth. Perfumery draws on species like Magnolia grandiflora and Magnolia figo (champaca's relative); fresh petals yield a costly absolute by solvent extraction, though most commercial magnolia is rebuilt with aroma-chemicals.
How it smells
A creamy white-floral scent bridging lemon and tea rose, brighter and less heady than jasmine. It opens with a citric, almost effervescent lift, then softens into milky petal, green stem and a faint clove warmth before drying clean and slightly fruity.
In perfumery
Used in the heart to add a luminous, dewy freshness without the indolic weight of tuberose or gardenia. It pairs with citrus, peony, lily and soft musks in feminine and unisex blends. It scents airy garden-style florals and soft floral compositions.
Good to know
Magnolias predate bees by tens of millions of years, so their tough petals evolved to be pollinated by beetles. True magnolia absolute is rare and costly to extract, which is why the magnolia in most bottles is a clever aroma-chemical reconstruction rather than the natural oil.
Jasmine
The heady white flower at perfumery's beating heart
What it is
Jasmine is the blossom of climbing shrubs in the olive family, chiefly Jasminum grandiflorum, grown in Egypt, India and Morocco, plus Jasminum sambac from India. The fragile flowers are picked by hand from before first light into the morning, solvent-extracted with hexane into a waxy concrete, then washed with ethanol to yield the absolute.
How it smells
A warm, lush white floral, sweet and honeyed with an animalic underside. Sambac leans fruity, tea-like and dense; grandiflorum reads creamier and greener on top. Both carry a heady, narcotic richness over a green-fruity opening, drying to a soft, skin-warm, faintly mushroomy-musky base.
In perfumery
A heart-note cornerstone, bridging citrus tops and woody bases while lending volume, sensuality and rounded floral body. It pairs with rose, tuberose, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and musk. Jasmine anchors many of the great classic florals and can stand alone as a radiant soliflore.
Good to know
Roughly five thousand hand-picked flowers yield a single gram of absolute, ranking natural jasmine among the costliest perfume materials. Much of its depth comes from indole, a molecule smelling of mothballs or decay when concentrated, yet radiant and living in the trace amounts the flower naturally holds.
Saffron
Crimson threads breathing leather, honey and dry hay
What it is
Saffron is the dried stigma of Crocus sativus, a purple autumn-flowering crocus in the iris family. Each bloom yields just three slender crimson threads, plucked by hand. The dried threads are steeped into a tincture or solvent-extracted into an absolute to capture their aromatic oil for perfumery.
How it smells
Warm and dry at first, with hay, honey and toasted bread, then a metallic, leathery edge driven by the molecule safranal. Beneath runs a bittersweet, faintly medicinal earthiness and a soft rubbery warmth. It opens spicy and golden, drying into suede, tobacco and dusty amber.
In perfumery
Saffron works in the heart, bridging spice and leather and lending a glowing, reddish warmth. It pairs classically with rose, oud, amber and tobacco. Whole leathery accords can be built around it, and it is often wed to rose for a rich, spiced-floral effect.
Good to know
Saffron is the costliest spice on earth, dearer by weight than gold. A single kilogram demands roughly 150,000 hand-picked flowers and many days of stooped labor. Most perfumery saffron is reconstructed from synthetic safranal or saffron bases, since the natural extract is too rare and expensive to use widely.
Cedarwood
Dry pencil shavings and sun-warmed timber
What it is
An essential oil steam-distilled from the wood, shavings and sawdust of several conifers. Main sources are Virginia cedar and Texas cedar, both junipers, plus the true Atlas and Himalayan cedars of the Cedrus genus. The fragrant oil concentrates in the heartwood and sawmill byproduct.
How it smells
Dry, woody and warm, the archetype of freshly sharpened pencils and a cedar closet. Virginia cedar is pencil-like and balsamic; Atlas cedar is softer, sweeter, almost honeyed-resinous. Across types runs a clean, slightly smoky, faintly camphoraceous tone that dries to a smooth, sappy warmth.
In perfumery
A versatile heart-to-base note giving dry woody structure, lift and a backbone for other materials. It pairs with vetiver, sandalwood, rose, citrus and incense. Cedar shapes the smoky drydown of woody-floral builds and countless modern woody-amber bases.
Good to know
The cedar of pencils and storage chests is usually botanically a juniper, not a true Cedrus. Cedar-derived molecules like Cedramber and Iso E Super power a huge share of contemporary woody fragrances, making cedarwood one of perfumery's most quietly ubiquitous building blocks.
Olibanum
Sun-baked resin tears that smell of sacred smoke
What it is
Olibanum is frankincense, the dried gum resin of Boswellia trees, chiefly Boswellia sacra and Boswellia carterii of Oman, Yemen and Somalia. Harvesters score the bark, and the milky sap bleeds out and hardens in the sun into amber tears that are then steam-distilled or solvent-extracted.
How it smells
Bright, dry and resinous, opening with cool lemon-pine and green terpenes over a balsamic warmth. Beneath runs peppery incense, a faint waxy sweetness and a smoky, slightly camphoraceous lift. As it dries it turns soft, ambery and meditative, recalling old stone churches and warm dust.
In perfumery
A versatile heart-to-base material prized in incense and oriental compositions, lending lift, cool radiance and a spiritual signature. It pairs with myrrh, rose, citrus and labdanum, and defines the smoky cathedral-incense and dry woody-incense styles built around it.
Good to know
Frankincense was once valued like gold and traded along Arabian caravan routes, and it appears in the Nativity story. Overtapping, overgrazing and pest damage now stress wild Boswellia stands, with Boswellia sacra listed as Near Threatened, raising real sustainability concerns for the trade.
Labdanum
Sticky amber resin scraped from sun-baked rockrose
What it is
Labdanum is a dark, sticky resin from the rockrose shrub Cistus ladanifer, native to the western Mediterranean. The plant exudes a fragrant gum on its leaves and twigs in summer heat; branches are boiled or scraped to recover the crude resin, which is then solvent-extracted into absolute and resinoid.
How it smells
Deep, warm and balsamic with leathery, animalic and faintly sweet facets that read as soft amber. Dried-fruit, honey, smoke and pine undertones run through it. It opens resinous and almost ambergris-like, then dries into a brown tobacco-and-leather warmth that lingers for hours.
In perfumery
A foundational base note and the natural backbone of most amber accords, usually built with vanilla and benzoin. A strong fixative, it deepens chypres, orientals and leathers and pairs with rose, oakmoss and incense. It underpins many golden-age oriental classics and countless amber compositions.
Good to know
In antiquity labdanum was combed from the matted beards and thighs of goats and sheep that had browsed through cistus thickets, then raked off with a toothed tool called a ladanisterion. It is one of the oldest aromatic materials, predating distillation by millennia.
Leather
Tanned hide, smoke and animal warmth
What it is
Leather is an accord, not a single ingredient: there is no leather essential oil. Perfumers rebuild its scent from birch tar and cade (smoky distilled woods), styrax and labdanum resins, isobutyl quinoline and modern safraleine-type molecules, historically echoing the tannins and oils once used to cure hides.
How it smells
Smoky, dry and animalic, ranging from supple new suede to tarry old saddle. Birch-tar versions read sooty and phenolic, almost campfire and band-aid; softer suede accords turn powdery, floral and skin-warm. It can lean bitter-green, ashy or sweet depending on the supporting resins.
In perfumery
A base-note signature that gives depth, structure and a carnal edge, pairing with rose, violet, tobacco, oud and floral hearts. Iconic in the great Russian-leather and rugged dry-leather styles, each one a different facet of the accord.
Good to know
The genre was born in Russia, where book bindings and boots were treated with birch tar; the classic Russian-leather style recalls that scent. Real tanning oils were largely restricted on safety grounds, so today's leathers are almost entirely the work of clever synthetic reconstruction.
Smoke
Drifting ash, embers and distant bonfire
What it is
Smoke is an abstract, evocative note rather than a single ingredient, built from materials that carry burnt and charred facets. Perfumers construct it from birch tar distilled from smoldering bark, guaiacwood, cade oil, lapsang souchong tea, vetiver and phenolic aroma-chemicals such as guaiacol that mimic combustion.
How it smells
Dry, charred and airy, like cooled embers, woodsmoke and singed paper drifting from a distant fire. It can lean tarry and leathery, incense-like and resinous, or campfire-sweet. It opens acrid and ashen, then settles into a warm, smoldering dryness that clings like scent on a wool coat.
In perfumery
Usually a base or heart effect lending depth, edge and a brooding atmosphere. It pairs with leather, incense, oud, vetiver and dry woods in dark, moody compositions. It haunts many smoky leather and incense scents.
Good to know
Birch tar, the most authentic smoke and leather material, is tightly restricted by IFRA because crude grades carry carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Modern perfumers rely on vacuum-rectified, low-PAH birch tar and synthetic phenols to evoke the same primal campfire effect within safety limits.
Ambergris Accord
Warm salt skin built without the whale
What it is
An ambergris accord is a reconstruction rather than a harvested material. True ambergris forms in the gut of the sperm whale and is restricted or illegal to trade in several countries, so perfumers rebuild the effect from ambroxan and related amber molecules, often with labdanum, ambrette and salty, woody-mineral facets blended alongside them.
How it smells
Warm, salty and skin-like, closer to a glow than to a sharp odour. There is dry driftwood and tobacco in it, a faint mineral sweetness, and a soft animal warmth that never turns fecal the way raw, unaged ambergris does. It diffuses rather than projects.
In perfumery
A base material used for radiance and hold: it slows the evaporation of lighter notes and lends compositions a lit-from-within warmth against the skin. It sits naturally with labdanum, incense, leather, woods and musks, and it is what gives many modern ambers their salty, breathing quality.
Good to know
Ambroxan, the workhorse of most ambergris accords, is not made from whales at all. It is synthesised from sclareol, a compound extracted from clary sage, and it happens to be one of the odorous molecules that forms naturally as ambrein in real ambergris breaks down under sun and seawater.
Musks
Skin warmth that hums under everything else
What it is
Musks are a class of materials rather than one note, which is why the house writes the word in the plural. The original was a glandular secretion from the male musk deer, now off limits under CITES and effectively absent from modern perfumery. What perfumers use instead are synthetics, along with ambrette seed, a plant material that carries musk molecules of its own.
How it smells
Soft, warm and close to the smell of clean skin. Depending on the molecule the effect can be powdery, faintly sweet, laundered and soapy, or fruity in a pear-like way, and the heavier ones lean animal. A blend of several is usually what gives that rounded, worn-in quality.
In perfumery
Base notes and fixatives above all: they hold a composition together, slow its evaporation and push everything above them closer to the skin. They soften sharp edges, extend florals, and round off leather, amber and woods. Very few modern fragrances are built without at least one of them.
Good to know
Musks are the standard textbook case of specific anosmia, the inability to smell one molecule while smelling everything else normally. A fragrance that reads full and warm on one person can seem thin on another, and the difference sits in the nose rather than the bottle. Perfumers blend several partly to cover it.
